Amazon.com Review
Simplify your home answering system with the Panasonic KXTC1870 cordless phone. It combines everything you need, including a digital answering system and caller ID with call waiting, in an all-in-one, high-quality, beautifully designed unit.

We found the KXTC1870B appealing because of its dual keypad design. Most functions are accessed from either the lighted keypad on the handset or from a large, intuitive keypad on the base. We were able to program basic features without reading the owner's manual. For more complex functions, the detailed manual was very helpful. A quick guide is also included.

The KXTC1870 can store up to 15 numbers--10 on the handset and 5 on the base. Programming the numbers is straightforward; however, the LCD and many of the program buttons are on opposite sides of the handset. We found it awkward having to flip the handset over several times to perform one function.

The LCD on the handset displays the number of calls you have received. To access those calls, press the search button located just below the LCD. The LCD also provides the caller's number and name, if available. To return a call, simply press the talk button. Edit and erase functions are also easily performed with the touch of a button. The KXTC1870 can store up to 50 caller-ID calls, including the time and date the call was received and the number of times each caller called.

Voice mail is conveniently accessed through either the handset or the base. A playback button on the handset provides easy access to most voice mail functions, including new messages, repeat, skip, and on/off. The base provides erase and record buttons and also displays the number of calls received. You can also switch a call to the speakerphone from either the handset or the base.

In our tests, the KXTC1870B provided excellent sound clarity and long range. The signal remained strong approximately 200 feet from the base. It continued to carry the signal up to 1000 feet with some voice breakup. If interference is present, you can press the channel button for a clearer signal. We detected only occasional background static throughout testing, despite physical barriers such as walls and other electronic equipment. Overall, we found the unit well designed and easy to use, and it performed well over a long range. --Emily Bakko

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Disposable workmanship.......2002-01-12

I specifically wanted a Panasonic phone since I had been very pleased with their products in the past. Not any more.

I purchased this phone for my elderly mother so she would have a reliable phone with all the features she needs. The phone was barely a year old, and it would not dial out. We assumed the problem was with her phone service, but it was the phone.

This is not a cheap phone. From the start, the clarity and ease of programming were only so-so. I see no point in having it repaired, because I can't trust it's future reliability.

2 out of 5 stars For the money, there have got to be better phones out there........2000-10-21

The signal often breaks up even when you're very near the base and you have to keep pressing the channel button to find a clear one-- something that in a phone for this price should be automatic. The flash/call-wait button is on the back of the phone next to the caller id window and it's very easy to press this button (and hang up on your party) if you brace the phone against your shoulder. Sometimes when you pick the handset up off the base and then quickly press the Talk key (like a normal person would when you're trying to make a call) the phone gets confused for five seconds and then beeps at you after failing to give you a dial tone.

Speaker phone sound quality and operation is excellent though the base only has 5 speed-dial slots. Range seems pretty good once you've found a channel that isn't plagued with static. I have not used the answering machine capabilities so I can't comment on them.

I would not recommend this phone, and generally regret purchasing it.

2 out of 5 stars poor implementation of perfect set of features........2000-06-28

Set of features is perfect, but what's most important for phone -- how it sounds. This phone distorts the sound, use of callerID is complicated (reverse side of the receiver), answering system, time setting are complicated and not user-friendly.

2 out of 5 stars I hate this phone.......2000-06-07

I bought this phone for the two line capability, dss technology and built-in answering machine. I also liked the idea of having two keypads. The features are terrific but I hate the phone - the buttons don't seem to always respond - using many of the features is difficult (i'm always having to pull out the manual) and holding the phone on my shoulder often results in cutting off the caller. The keyboard on the base only works with the speakerphone-not exactly what I had in mind! So now I'm on the search for yet another phone with these feautes (minus the called ID which I don't use). Unfortunatley, I kept thinking I'd adjust to this phone and didn't return it promptly so now I think it's mine. I was recently at a client's home and noticed they had the same phone - I asked if they liked it and they said they hated it! So I guess I'm not the only one.

2 out of 5 stars Nice features, but nobody could hear me.......2000-05-23

I bought this phone because of the features. I really liked the idea of having a separate dial pad on the base. Whenever I got myself into one of those automated menu systems it proved very convenient. The speaker phone on this phone is superb! It's full duplex, which means both parties can talk at the same time without having the phone chop up the conversation.

I found the caller ID display on the back of the phone a bit awkward. When I recieved another call I had to turn the phone over to see who was calling. When I did this, of course I could no longer hear the person I was talking to. If it was on the front of the handset, I could have held the phone away from my face for a second to see who was calling and still been able to hear the one I was talking to.

And finally the reason I returned the phone: Most of the people I talked to said that they could barely hear me, and just to let you know, I am a very loud talker. Callers kept asking me to switch to a corded phone. After this happened several times I couldn't see the point in having a cordless phone --at least this particular one.
