A desirable goal in videoconferencing is to provide optimum video quality for each conference participant according to the capability of the participant. This is easily achieved when all of the terminals participating in the conference have the same capability. In such cases, the conference initiator can select an MCU service that sets the video bandwidth at a value that is equally optimum for all of the participants. However, when the capabilities of the participants are not equal, the MCU service that the conference initiator selects can set the video bandwidth higher than some participants can support. Those participants will experience degradation in the video quality.The IP/VC 3540 Rate Matching module allows the IP/VC 3540 MCU module to address this problem. The IP/VC 3540 Rate Matching module applies algorithms to video content to reproduce the same content at different bandwidths. The MCU uses the rate matching module to generate a second stream of the video content. Using the rate matching module allows the MCU to have services that establish two video bandwidths in the same call. The two video bandwidths allow more of the conference participants to experience quality video.
