Midland 77-104XL Mobile CB Radio

Product Description

Amazon.com Review
CBs are practical safety and information devices, but their bulk usually relegates them to being installed in pickups and other large vehicles. With Midland's 77-104XL, all of your excuses for adding a CB to your vehicle evaporate. Although it comes with a convenient full-size microphone, a standard jack for an external antenna, and other features found on larger units, this CB radio measures less than 5 inches wide, 6.5 inches deep, and 1.5 inches thick. That's small enough to find a home in almost any vehicle.

Installing the 77-104XL requires some familiarity with your car's wiring, and although the included instructions are well written, the novice will want to enlist the help of a professional to avoid shorting out any part of the vehicle's electrical system. The 77-104XL comes with a mounting bracket, and you should be prepared to drill some small holes in the bottom of your dash to install it.

In our tests of the 77-104XL, the unit performed well when connected to a large Midland antenna that we were also testing. The full-size microphone was easier to handle than the miniature ones that come with similar portable radios, and the sound quality of the 77-104XL was as good as could be expected from its aging AM technology. The large rubber-coated knobs that are used to tune channels, adjust volume, and control squelch were very easy to use.

The rear of the 77-104XL has two jacks for connecting an external speaker and a PA speaker, and a switch on the front let us easily switch between CB and PA modes. Another switch on the front enables or disables the built-in ANL technology, which can reduce static, although we never had a need for the switch. A bright green LCD displays the currently tuned channel and is flanked by other LEDs that illuminate when you transmit or receive.

Novice users will enjoy the 77-104XL's quality and performance, and advanced users will enjoy all the extra features Midland has included. Basically, this is a full-featured CB squeezed into a relatively small and attractive package, and anyone thinking about permanently adding a CB radio to their vehicle should seriously consider this capable alternative. --T. Amazon.com Product Description

Very small size and super-high performance mark the Midland 77-104XL, an advanced version of Midland's popular 77-104 mobile CB radio. Like its predecessor, the 77-104XL packs all the punch of larger, dash-mounted units but is more versatile and user-friendly.

Performance highlights include a "last channel used" memory circuit, public address capability, and full legal maximum power output with a generous reserve. Enhanced modulation results in outstanding talk power, while a switchable ANL delivers better noise control.

Housing the superior performance package is a rugged metal cabinet with a high-tech Euro- design front panel that will enhance any vehicle's interior. Some other notable exterior features are an improved full-size microphone with a four-pin screw-on mike jack, a bold, bright green LED display, and rubber-capped knobs for precise, nonslip control. Also standard is a handy detachable DC power cord.

Together, the advanced engineering and user-friendly design are what make the 77-104XL excellent.

3 out of 5 stars INSTALLATION TO POWER SOURCE.......2004-03-21

THIS PRODUCT IS GREAT I'M SURE BUT FOR ONE CATCH...YOU HAVE TO HARD WIRE THE CB RADIO TO THE AUTO'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM YOURSELF. PERHAPS NOT A PROBLEM FOR SOME BUT FOR OTHERS (MYSELF INCLUDED)IT IS I AM SURE. IT IS MY FAULT THAT I DID NOT NOTICE THIS IN THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION PRIOR TO ODERING. I JUST WANTED A CB RADIO THAT I COULD PLUG INTO THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER AND GO. THIS IS NOT THAT TYPE OF CB UNIT. FOR THIS REASON ALONE I RETURNED THE UNIT TO AMAZON.COM SO NOT TAKING ANYTHING AWAY FROM THE CB ITSELF ....JUST BE AWARE THAT ONE HAS TO WIRE THE UNIT TO THE AUTO AND NOT JUST PLUG INTO A LIGHTER....

1 out of 5 stars Really disappointing........2004-02-06

I had two of these units from Amazon with the same identical problem. The channel selector turned and clicked but did not change the channel. I also own the Midland 77-092, which is actually a cheaper model, but I've not had any problems with it, and am completely satisfied. You may want to consider that model from Amazon instead of the 77-104XL.

5 out of 5 stars I'm pleased.......2002-08-01

The CB is just what i expected. It's not very clear in the description but it DOES have a PA switch and output. The best part is, I got it in three days!

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all for the money.......2000-06-16

This is definitely a good find for 40 dollars. My friend has one in his 92 Ford Probe and it is great for talking to other people on long highway trips, finding out where there are road hazards from the truck drivers, and other misc. uses. It does not come with the antenna but for 40 dollars you can easily go and buy one for 20 bucks at a local radio shack or pick one up at a garage sale for 5 or so. This is not a top of the line unit, but for a regular cb user this is perfect. If you have ever considered getting a cb...get this one NOW! Hope to hear you on the air-waves.
