Motorola T280 2-Way Radio (Black)

Product Description

Amazon.com Review
With an impressive two-mile range, the TalkAbout 280 SLK packs way more power than your childhood walkie-talkies. This two-way radio sports 14 channels with 38 privacy codes to help block out unwanted messages. The striking design makes the radio's exterior as cool as its features.

In our tests, we didn't encounter any problems with interference or with finding a free channel to talk on. The reception was clear, without too much static. We especially liked the scan lock, which scans through the channels until it finds an active channel. Scan lock automatically locks the channel in, letting you either listen discreetly or talk with other parties.

Most of the buttons are intuitive enough to figure out, although we do suggest a quick read of the manual in order to fully appreciate the power of the TalkAbout. The placement of the talk button, which is inconveniently located in the dead center of the radio, makes it difficult to speak while holding down the button. You can solve this problem by attaching a microphone to the radio and using the VOX (voice activation) feature, which allows hands-free talking.

The TalkAbout 280 SLK is a great choice for anyone needing a powerful two-way radio for activities such as hiking, skiing, taking road trips, or shopping.

5 out of 5 stars Rechargeable battery for Talkabout.......2004-02-07

These are getting hard to find but they work really well. We have use 280 and 289 batteries for years on the farm. Only trouble is when they are outside in the cold and lose power more quickly. Once warmed up they work well.

5 out of 5 stars Lasts all day on the ski slope!.......2000-03-08

I charge up the battery in the cabin overnight. I turn the radio on during the caravan drive to the mountain, ski all day with the earbud, and leave it on until we arrive back at the cabin. I have only seen it get below half charge once!

5 out of 5 stars We use our TalkAbout 280 SKL-NiMH all the time.......2000-08-02

With two very young children, our outings can be very unpredictable. Time is tight too. The Motorola 280's have been a great time saver. Sometimes we split up in the mall. One of us goes to do some shopping while the other has fun with the kids. We don't have to worry about setting up a time and place to meet up. It's easy to ask a question or change/make plans from 1/2 mile away. We use it on hikes and while walking around the neighborhood. They're also great when you are travelling with more than one car.

The range is supposed to be about 2 miles. It can differ depending where you are.

Everything I've said is a good reason to by any 2-way radio. Why did I choose this model even though it costs a lot more than some of the other ones?

-They're rechargeable. It's real convienient to plug them in for a couple of hours and not have to deal with swapping batteries. -They're compact. Even more compact than the the 280's that take regular batteries. Their size makes them easy to bring along anywhere. They also have a removeable belt clip. Clip them on your pants or belt or remove the clip and they slip easily into your pocket. -They're rugged. The 280's survived drops onto pavement and gallons of baby drool. -They have 14 channels and 38 privacy codes. If you go somewhere where there is a large crowd, you will run into other people with radios. The extra channels help you find a quiet channel. However, we rarely have to change channels.

We've had ours for almost 2 years now and they have been very useful.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful little tools.......2000-05-19

these 2-way radios are great - the ta280slk is the best small 2-way radio that we have used - great reception, clear voice over at least 1.5 miles in heavy cover and in the clear - they go more than the 2 miles advertised - great features and very easy to use - my 9 year old grandson was using these radios inside of 2 min. - these are so good that we have ordered another pair - now all of the family can have a radio when we are out and about - another great point - over the water from our boat to a friends the broadcast range was more than 2 miles by a long shot -- some users complain about the broadcast button being in a awkward place - we do not feel that way at all - great tools for the outdoorsman and women - and great for keeping track of the kids and grandkids

4 out of 5 stars Great for outdoor communication.......2000-04-01

The Motorola Talkabout 280 2-way radio is the near-perfect tool for outdoor enthusiasts with a need to communicate with one another. It's compact design means it fits well in a pocket, a backpack or clipped onto a belt. The controls are easy to use and the darn thing is loud enough to be heard through 3-layers bombing down Mt. Baker on a snowboard. The rechargeable battery is a huge feature. I can't imagine using it with AAs. It easily lasts all day on the slopes trails and even during an ascent on the Grand Teton. Charge time is minimal, but I would recommend charging it over night before you take off on your destination.

A couple of minor nitpicks now. The talk button is directly in front of the mouthpiece. It's not a huge deal, but sometimes you miss the first word of what people are saying. It's plastic construction is durable, but dropping it or falling on it could prove fatal. It's not really weatherproof either. A friend of mine got some mud and rain on his and had to take it apart to let it dry, but heck it still works great so no big complaint there.

If you participate in any type of outdoor activity with family and friends I highly recommend you pick up a set of these radios.

5 out of 5 stars Motorola TalkAbout TA280 SLK: A Good Choice of Walkie Talkie.......2000-03-20

There is also a scan feature included in the TalkAbout which scans other channels with people using them. You can easily make friends this way and have fun. I stronly recommend the Motorola TalkAbout TA280 SLK for family trips, shopping, camping, skiing, in a theme park, and many more!

4 out of 5 stars Man, this walkie talkie rocks!!!.......2004-08-27

Hitchiking can really be a drag. That's why I always carry my Motorola Talkabout with me. With its channel scan function, and its 2 mile range, I can almost always find a friendly conversation. Plus - the chicks DIG the attractive belt holster and shiny silver color.
I took off a star for not including rechargeable batteries as a matter of course. Bunch of savages in this town! Didn't Motorola get that memo about battery life, and conservation of this planets material resources? Don't we want there to be batteries for our children, and our children's children? Still, as long as we don't drink and drive, say no to drugs, and take care when operating heavy machinery, this Talkabout walkie talkie will be just swell.

4 out of 5 stars Great value, even better with rebate!.......2001-09-11

Got the radio for a family trip to the beach and it worked great. Didn't have a problem with too many other people using the frequencies, but appreciated the 38 sub channels. I especially liked the large talk button- made it easy to find when communicating. We had some other radios with us with small same size buttons which made it harder to find to talk. The range was fine, as we also used it in our cars on our way to the beach. Cheaper and easier than making cell phone calls to each other all the time. I also recommend getting the Aquapac waterproof cover. The covers are a little pricey but worth it. I can't tell you how many times I waded into the water to fish only to have a wave come up and drench me. The covers also keep out the sand and other junk from messing up the radio. No problem with hearing or speaking through the cover.

      4 out of 5 stars Pretty nice!.......2001-05-16

I bought a pair of these 2-way radios for my long distance move. I used them throughout the entire trip, and they were pretty useful. I don't really have a problem with the button in the middle, but it is kind of in the way. Good clarity when you are in the clear. When I tested it in New York City, I was able to get about 6 blocks before the signal was completely lost. For the casual user though, I would go for the less expensive model though.

5 out of 5 stars A useful gadget for the average family outing..........2001-02-12

My husband, young daughters and I own horses, and trailride at least once a week. Santa brought us four of these lovely little two-ways this year at Christmas, and I couldn't be more pleased. We've had none of the troubles noted in the other reviews, (although we don't ride on mountaintops), and my children find the radios simple to use and easy to understand (not to mention the cool factor!).

The radios are durable; we've dropped them in snowbanks, had them grawed on by curious horses, and thumped around in saddlebags. They're certainly useful, we know if one of us gets separated from the others they'll be able to radio in and figure out where we are. And for what we use them for, they're just perfect. We looked at a bunch of GPS handhelds, and decided we didn't need anything quite that high end. For the average family who hikes or skis, trailrides or just goes to the Mall of America, these are the perfect belt accessory. Go for it!

I agree with Fred Kampe below. These things malfunctioned when other brands were working fine right next to me on the mountain.
