1 out of 5 stars Underpowered, lousy.......2004-03-16

We received a pair of the T5820s as a gift. Thought these would be an upgrade to our old FRS radio. It was a downgrade! The 5-mile rating is a joke. The old FRS radios way out-perform the 5820s, and are more compatible with other radios.
Pros:
-Locking Menu Button
-Durable
Cons:
-Range
-Compatibility with other radios.

3 out of 5 stars Better options out there.......2003-12-21

My fiance and I play a lot of airsoft (kinda like paintball) and we use radios like this a lot. I have to say, I am not very fond of our Motorola radios! We constantly had issues with sound quality, even within short distances. Half the radios we bought ended up broken after only a few uses!

Another annoyance with the radios is the talk button - which is sunk in to the side and annoying to press, especially when you're wearing gloves! It takes a pretty hard push to activate, which I found very aggravating. We also had issues with accidentally messing with the volume all the time because of poor placement of the volume control.

These might work better for people who are not so rough on their radios, but for us they just weren't acceptable. There are much better choices out there, especially for the price!

1 out of 5 stars A piece of Junk from Motorola.......2003-12-10

I used 5320, 5420 2 miles range walkie talkie before, I have to say they are much better than this 5 mile range 5820. 5820 does not even go beyond one mile and voice are twisted. very dissapointed at this unit, do yourself a favor, if you need 5 miles range buy a 5720

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and EXTREMELY sturdy.......2003-11-09

I purchased the T5710 model. I take these radios camping with me to stay in touch with the family. I stopped along the highway to check something and left the radio on top of the car. As I was driving off the radio fell off the top of the car and into the path of an oncoming 18 wheeler. The truck ran over the radio. The radio still worked perfectly. The range could be a little longer but i am very satisfied with my radios!!

1 out of 5 stars Solidly made piece of JUNK!!.......2003-10-08

Where do I begin to detail my dissatisfaction?
1) The push to talk button is countersunk into the side and takes a HARD push to activate it.
2) The supposed 5 mile range of these units proved to be less than 1 mile.
3) The poorly placed volume button was consistently being adjusted (unintentionally)by the merest movements.
4) The belt clips.... don't even get me started.
5) The menu driven controls are counterintuitive.
6) The ring tones WEREN'T BAD, actually.
7) The clarity of signal was mediocre (even within 20 feet of one another).

1 out of 5 stars Poor 2-way-radio choice.......2003-08-22

I bought a pair after losing an older T5200 (also from Motorola) which is not manufactured anymore. I figured that the new & more expensive model (which also has 1 Watt compared to 1/2 watt of the T5200) should work as good or better.

I was very disapoointed. Very poor sound quality. Audio is not clear and in many cases has breaks. I still have one T5200 left (I lost 1 out of 2) - eveyone in my family wants to use the older unit as the new T5820 does not perform. Plus, I paid for the T5200 half of what I paid for thr T5820...

I recommend not to buy this product. Go for the new cheaper & better T5720 (1 Watt as well, compact, great sound quality. The only limitation - no vibration alert. See my review on it).

1 out of 5 stars Poor speaker performance.......2003-06-07

The quality of voice coming from the speakers is very poor. You can hardly understand the person talking to you.

5 out of 5 stars Solution for 'muffled' reception.......2003-05-26

To those who have problems with getting clear reception:

If you normally set you volume control to max, try turning it down a little (or more) if your reception sounds muffled.

I've tried this several times within city transmission and it helps alot with removing the muffled reception some users have reported (especially those who have purchased sets with rechargeable nicad batteries).

I think the volume control and speaker interface has not been designed well for max vol transmissions. (Note that new T5620, T5720 and T5920 have sound enhacing improvements for clearer voice transmissions, check motorola site for specs and launch dates)

Reason I like this set:
The 1.0 watt transmitter helps increase talking distance in built up areas as opposed to 0.5 watt frs radio sets. Price was a good deal with rebate. ...

Setting the Interference Elimator Code to '0' might aid in clearer reception. Use this if your area is not conjested with other 2 way radio users.

A possible way of increasing distance might be to use channel 15 (GMRS freq 462.550Mhz). Normally lower bandwidths tend to travel further.

1 out of 5 stars Big Mistake.......2003-05-15

Rugged outdoor use ?? I don't think so. The first day, both belt clips broke! Replacement isn't an option because the...plastic that is poorly designed will break again. Five mile range ? The radios that I purchased won't transmit over a 1.5 mile range. Finally, be prepared to send lots of money to the FCC. I would not recommend purchasing this item.
