Once you get past the obvious..........2007-06-28

Which is, don't use the keypad to program, buy the software! Once you get past that and setup your individual systems and play with the different features, it's great. I like being able to just touch one button and turn off a system I don't want to hear or vice versa. I like the backlight on squelch feature and reception with the provided rubber duck is pretty good. I upgraded the antenna, but only noticed a small improvement. Wish the speaker was a bit louder, but that is the only negative thing I can think of.

Okay, it is everything I could want for a scanner. I'm sure someone might want something more. There is another model that receives Digital Signals. I didn't need that, especially for almost double the price. The range of this unit's reception is different for different types of signals. With a standard conventional signal, single frequency only, I have been able to pick up calls from as far away as 25 miles. This was the police HQ and the cars. You may not hear everything though. To make programming easier I would buy the software and subscribe to radioreference.com. From there you can download the frequencies right into the scanner. I would recommend you buy the warranty. You are going to want to take this unit with you everywhere. This traveling makes it more likely that you will drop the unit. Make sure the warranty covers accidental damage.

These radios are a disappointment! The batteries do not last through a 10 hour day, and I am reviewing the ones that come with the rechargeable battery pack and chargers. They last longer with rechargeable batteries, but then why did I pay for the battery packs and rechargers? Don't waste your money. If you can get the radios without the battery packs and chargers at a discount, then maybe go with them. Otherwise, don't buy them!

I bought these, as we live in a large home, and they don't hold a charge even just through the daytime hours. Good sound though, if you don't need to use them all the time.

Feels and looks like a very well made product!.......2007-02-23

I was very surprised by the build quality of this radio. I use it as a safety net when ocean canoing. The radio itself feels very sturdy and the case looks like it was manufactured with very tight tolerances (It looks high quality). The package included an extra battery as well as a charger/cradle that can charge both the radio (with the battery installed) and an extra battery at the same time. Also, a 12v cigarette-lighter charging adapter was included.

The radio's software/interface is excellent. You can have it monitor several channels (such as 16 and 9) as well as the NOAA/disaster channels simultaneously. Also, it can use the geographic codes available from the NOAA website to limit weather/disaster updates to your region. (In Hawaii, this is specified down to parts of the Big Island, Maui, Oahu, etc.)

In summary, a seemingly great radio at a good price.

I bought this radio for safety purposes during a kayaking trip in Glacier Bay National Park. I didn't have a dry bag for it, and kept it around my neck at key points during the trip where it was exposed to rain and seawater.

While I can't say I used the radio extensively, it functioned well when I needed it. We had a brown bear wander into our camp, and I used the radio to communicate with a nearby touring boat so it could keep us advised of the bear's position while we broke camp. The boat's communications came through crisply and they appeared to have no trouble hearing us. The radio also held its charge through four days of kayaking, being turned on and off intermittently. In short, I bought it in case of an emergency and it worked perfectly when I needed it.

A versatile all-in-one scanner/warning system that keeps you informed of nearby police, fire, and other emergency activities, the Uniden BCT8 is a must for truckers and other mileage-heavy drivers. The foundation of the BCT8 is its BearTracker technology, which scans for "mobile extenders"--used by virtually all highway patrol vehicles to communicate with dispatchers--and alerts the driver when a patrol is within a three-mile radius. The technology is far more efficient than a radar detector, as it doesn't wait until you're under surveillance before alerting you to the highway patrol's presence. The remainder of the time, the BCT8 scans its 250 user-programmable channels (five banks of 50 channel each) for active transmissions and switches to the channel once it detects a broadcast. The unit's scannable frequency coverage includes all of the most interesting "action" bands, including police, fire/emergency, business/industrial, amateur radio, utilities, weather, marine, aircraft, and more.

In addition to scanning for active frequencies, the BCT8 can also search for the same frequencies. The difference is simple: scannable frequencies have been programmed into the BCT8's channel bank, whereas searchable frequencies have not. Thus a comprehensive search can find a host of transmissions from unknown or rarely used frequencies--a nice bonus for the radio enthusiast. During search mode, the scanner reviews 100 frequencies per second (with 12.5 kHz steps) at normal speeds or up to 300 frequencies per second (with 5 kHz steps) at turbo speed.

Perhaps the BCT8's most valuable function, however, is its TrunkTracker technology. TrunkTrackers follow "trunked" radio systems, which are used by many public service agencies to accommodate a large volume of emergency radio users. Rather than assign a specific frequency to each group of users, "trunked" systems let groups share frequencies--a must for many larger markets. The problem for scanners is that trunking systems often assign users to different frequencies after a conversational pause, making it difficult to track a single discussion. The TrunkTracker overcomes this by determining the users' "talkgroup ID," which remains constant throughout the process. Thus, whenever a group is assigned a new frequency, you can jump to that frequency as well. No more losing track of an emergency situation just because the radio transmissions have dried up for a bit.

The BCT8 even makes it possible to track several trunking systems at once, or to scan conventional and trunking systems at the same time. And drivers who maintain favorite frequencies can designate them as priority channels (one per bank). The scanner will then check your priority channels every two seconds while it scans each bank, so you'll never miss an important transmission. Additional features include search lockouts, which lets you lock out frequencies that have continuous or uninteresting communications; preprogrammed highway patrol frequencies by state (except Hawaii); and an easy-to-read backlit display that excels in low-light situations.

Finally, the BCT8 is PC programmable, letting you easily program all essential frequencies and talkgroup IDS into the scanner through Uniden's BCT8 scanning software. The BCT8 measures 7.06 by 2.44 by 6.1 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

Almost there.......2007-06-01

The radio works good, but has one big flaw. The only search function divides the frequency spectrum into 13 bands, some of which are quite large and take a long time to go through. The chance of missing a short transmission is therefore also quite large.

I don't understand why they didn't include a function that existed on my 30 year old Pro-2020 and just about every other scanner, which is to enter in an arbitrary search range.

Too bad. I like the unit otherwise, but it's going to be returned for this reason.

A great value in a scanner, I couldn't believe the traffic I heard, {depending on where you live} pilots to the tower, weather reports, tons of police action, EMS and fire depts engaged in all kinds of incedents,I heard slot techs and hostesses in the casnos, security even government enforcers tracking and detaining wanted felons! also heard railroad traffic!
the scanner is already set and ready to go to pull in all the action in your neck of the woods, plus more advanced features to trunk track HWY patrols and other agencies, it even has the frequencies for what you want to hear right on top of the unit for quick reference,
and like all uniden "bearcat" products it's built to last!

Great Value Good for Novice.......2007-03-10

This is the 1st scanner i have used since I was a young boy listening to my dad's old BearCat unit. I find it easy to operate for casual use and the preprogramming picks up Tampa PD and HillsCounty Fire Rescue though on preset EMS, not preseit police. I am having trouble programming for trunking which is necessary to follow HillsCounty Sheriffs office, but I'm roaming the net to find tips. Good buy, very pleased.

Have still not been able to program this the way it should be, confusing controls instrucitons, complicated, not at all like my old scanner, cannot find a way to check to see what frequencies are stored in the scanner, would look for a diferent scanner that is more user friendly.

Can't beat the price........2006-10-22

Great scanner. I have taken the scanner plunge in the past year. I have had a handheld for emergencies and went down the route of finding frequencies and programming them in. It really is a hobby type of thing since it is so time consuming and can be addictive after a while.

What brought me to this scanner was I was really looking for something more plug and play. I also needed something for the car since I travel a lot and wanted to use it on the road. Problem is every place you go has a differently freq set up for local communications. That means a bunch of research and programming before every trip. Enter the Uniden BCT8. This is really a nice scanner. I have done my research and for the price for this unit cannot be beat. If your new to scanning or just need a backup this will work fine. Because of the way it's set up you can just put in the state your traveling through and the scanner will do the rest. Note: (It's illegal to use a scanner while mobile in some states so make sure you check).

The scanner has gotten me out of a couple traffic jams and has given me exactly what I wanted. We were on a trip back from Florida and hit real bad traffic in Indiana. Flipped on the scanner and found out a boat had flipped over on a bridge in front of us blocking all lanes in my direction. We flipped around and took a different route. Things like that have happened a few times since I have had this scanner.

It has a ton of storage if you want to program in some of your own Freqs. It also has all the presets you will need if you don't have the time to mess with it.

After having this scanner for a few months I even got my HAM license so I could talk back to some of the people I was listening to when at home. I liked it so much I got another one for my shack and keep the other in the car all the time.

(15 GMRS, 7 FRS) that are easy to scan and monitor. The channel scan/monitor allows you to listen for weak signals on the current channel with the press of a button. Plus, with the large number of channels, you have several communication options that ensure you can almost always talk with friends or family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal. The channels are easy to find, thanks to the channel scan feature, which browses for active channels while you watch the display. To transmit on a GMRS or FRS channel, a user merely presses the PTT button while the scan is paused.

Additional features include a battery strength meter that monitors the status of the batteries so you can always stay in touch. The key lock prevents your settings from being accidentally changed, and the key beep gives an audio confirmation as you press each button. The radios also uses an automatic "roger beep" tone to confirm to other users that you're done speaking, and the call tone lets you alert listeners that you have something to say. Good CB.......2007-05-08

This CB has the NOAA weather bands on it and almost anywhere in the country, you will be able to pick up the local weather on one of the three channels. The squelch and RF gain dial allow you to tune out weak or staticy signals that interfere with what you do want to listen to or talk with.

A good value, all in all, and (I am told) they are made with the same circuitry that Cobras are made with for much less money.

Works great, User friendly........2006-06-30

The Uniden PRO538W works great! As long as you have a good quality antenna set up, and take the time to tune everything with an SWR meter this CB is amazing. I use it for off-roading, so the range wasn't a big concern to me, but rest assured, when properly set up, this thing can get some killer range on the highway. The ability to access weather channels is a nice feature too, I use it more than I thought I would. Having the PA function is a good novelty, when hooked to a speaker you can have a lot of fun talking to people on the street as you pass by. Great way to pick-up chicks. So overall, a great product, as long as you set it up and tune it properly. When matched with a good antenna, this CB won't be beat.

Great CB radio.......2006-05-12

The Uniden Pro538W is a fantastic radio. The front-fire speaker is very clear compared to my other CB. This makes a huge difference because many CB'ers have an accent and lingo that I have trouble deciphering. The microphone is built for heavy use. It has a hefty coiled cable with a connector that screws on to the radio. You don't need to worry about the mic coming unplugged. The display has an LED meter that indicates the strength of signals that you are receiving and transmitting. I think the meter is too small to look at while I'm driving down the highway. You can also pick up NOAA weather broadcasts. The squelch and RF gain adjustments work great.
I purchased this radio with the Wilson Lil-Wil magnetic mount antenna. The combination work great in my mini-van. I've taken this radio on a couple of road trips and have never had a problem reaching other drivers.

Antenna.......2004-05-04

The previous review that mentions antennas are key to a good CB setup is correct. For a normal CB user I would recommend either the Wilson lil' Wil or the Wilson 500 antenna. Both are magnetic mount antennas. The lil' Wil antenna is a relatively small antenna and it's only around $39.00. Actually any Wilson CB antenna will be fine. Also, to do a good job at setting up your antenna you should purchase an SWR meter. They are not expensive. You only need the meter connected inline between the radio and antenna when you are adjusting the antenna. Once you are done adjusting the antenna you can take the meter out of the connection and connect the antenna directly to the radio. Don't be fooled by cheap ordinary CB antennas like you will find at radio shack. Do not settle for anything less then a Wilson antenna. Cobra and Uniden both make fabulous CB radios so either make will be fine.

Dog-gone Good Radio.......2004-02-17

Bought this CB about a month ago. Works like a dream and buries anything else I've tried. Bought an antenna that picks up weather-band to go with it, reception is crystal clear and weather-band comes in just as well. Looking for a good all around radio? This is the one to buy!

Extremely poor battery life .......2007-04-29

When they work, they work ok. The problem is, they don't work for very long. These radios will go dead on a freshly charged set of 900ma NiMH batteries in 5-10 minutes, and that is with less than a minute of talk time. The funny thing is, these (brand spankin' new) batteries are still going strong at +1.25 volts each under load even after the radio complains that they are dead. Note that a AAA NiMH battery is rated at 1.2 volts and when it reads 1.25 volts under load it is definitely charged!

Uniden has been advertising factory refurb 1038's on their web site for a couple months now and I'll bet they have quite a stockpile of them. Based on the set I received, it would appear that they didn't do much to fix the design flaws. Battery life seems to be a common complaint across their entire FRS radio lineup and these are exceptionally bad.

After calling customer service, Uniden did promise to replace my radios several weeks ago but never followed through--not a happy camper here.

I own a couple of Uniden scanners and they are fantastic, it's too bad this company cannot manufacture a decent set of FRS/GMRS radios.

Invest in rechargeable batteries.......2007-04-24

They work OK- you won't get anywhere near 10 miles in range though. They drain batteries quick, so have a couple sets of charged up rechargeable batteries handy.

No battery charger!.......2007-03-27

I don't want to rate this product, since I haven't used it. I had to, though... I just wanted to share with everybody that this product still does not come with a charger. I received them, left them unopened upon not seeing a charger, called customer service (they didn't do anything about the posting), and sent them back. A waste of time and effort and extra hassle and waiting to get the money back. Do not get mislead by pictures or descriptions.

The battery packs in these walkie talkies last for about an hour only- I am very disappointed in the quality. We need them for emergencies throughout the day- this is a farmed animal sanctuary- non-profit and we cannot afford to purchase new batteries after paying for these already. I am willing to change my review if we get new batteries. They came on time- they are good quality- other than the batteries

Poor range for me........2007-01-25

Does not compare with Motorola. The range was poor. Interestingly, when I pressed the call button, that was transmitted but the recipient couldn't pick up my voice and vice versa. If they work for you, then you have a good deal. But not for me.

I purchased this scanner (with headset) about 1 month ago and I'm thoroughly pleased with the scanner itself; I haven't used the headset as yet as it is quite large and heavy. I've had no problem at all with the reception or clarity and the volume is good as well. I love the portability of this unit; I only wish the batteries lasted a bit longer, but...oh well. I use the rechargeable batteries and they last about 12-15 hours of constant use. Maybe that is acceptable for rechargeables, I've never used them before now. Overall, I am very pleased and would recommend this scanner to anyone looking for a good, reasonably priced, portable scanner.

Just got this radio for my jeep for those off road trips and no complaints yet. Its been rained on and jarred around something fierce and it keeps on ticking. Had a cobra cb and it just couldn't handle the abuse. So for the price and durability this is definitely the way to go if you need a CB.

Uniden PRO510XL CB Radio - Jeep.......2007-01-10

I bought the Uniden to replace a practically brand new Cobra 19 that has never worked correctly. I first tried buying another new Cobra 19, but I got it home and it had a bad mike. I don't know what has happened to Cobra; that used to be all I would buy. They are junk now.

Anyway, the little Uniden works very well for a small low end radion. I needed a small radio to go into my Jeep because there isn't a lot of room and plus I didn't want to tie up a bunch of money in it if someone stole it.

I'm very satisfied with the Uniden radio and would recommend it.

Great Compact CB.......2006-08-13

This CB radio is excellent for small spaces. It does not have all the "gadget" features some other radios have but they aren't necesary anyway. The output is comparable also. I installed it in a Jeep Wrangler. Now that it is in, I couldn't picture using any other radio. Perfect for Jeep people!!!!

P.S. It is smaller than it looks online!

Good basic CB radio.......2005-10-05

This is a pretty good CB for a basic rig in it's price class. If all you are looking for is a no-frills CB for the car to keep in touch with others or get road information while traveling, the Pro 510XL is a nice rig. I have a cigarette lighter plug on my Pro 510 so I can easily put it in the car whenever I go on a trip. The audio from the speaker is pretty clean, and I have found that the range on the CB is pretty good for it's size. It helps to have a good antenna, such as a Wilson 1000 or something similar. One thing I don't like about the radio is that the microphone is pretty cheap. Uniden chose to use an electret microphone element in the mic for the Pro 510 and Pro 520 radios. The mic element draws about 3 Volts of power from the radio itself to power the mic element. This makes it virtually impossible to use any other mic other than the one that comes with the radio. I have been told that you have to use some sort of amplified mic, like one of the Astatic series hand mics on the Pro 510 if you want to go with a better quality mic for the radio. If you try to use a regular dynamic mic like most CB's use, the transmit audio just won't sound very good. The mic that Uniden supplies with the radio is adequate, I wouldn't say it is excellent. All-in-all, I think the Pro 510XL is a good basic CB. Uniden backs the rig with a 2-year warranty. Give this radio a look if all you are looking for is a simple CB for traveling and keeping in touch with others on the road.

Great Starter or Back-Up !!!.......2004-03-30

I am partial to Uniden anyway, however this CB is great for a first time user or as a back up to a more expensive unit. I have been using CB for about 10 years and I always make sure I have a Uniden 510 available for a back up, or use it in a second car. It has superior range when used with a good antenna and the received audio is decent. I would suggest using an external speaker unless you have a super quiet vehicle. The anl switch cuts through static really well to improve reception, although it sometimes dulls out the audio of the person you are trying to hear. You can use it with a cigarette lighter plug with an adapter from radio shack for a few dollars. They will even show you how to hook it up. It all boils down to being a great CB at a great price. Remember a simple rule of thumb... An inexpensive CB on a good antenna will perform just as well as a high-end CB on a cheap antenna. Don't forget to tune your antenna and have fun!
