Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
Make family trips more fun and take the sting out of your cell phone bill at the same time with this pair of Cobra FRS 110 microTALK two-way radios. This set comes with rechargeable batteries and a charger--you can outfit yourself for a hiking trip or set up a simple home intercom with one purchase.

Why invest in yet another communication device in this age of cell phones? In practice, cell phones don't often work in enclosed areas or outside major population centers and you can rack up charges in roaming areas. If you want to keep in touch in the great outdoors, at an amusement park, or while caravanning down the highway on a road trip, two-way radios are a great alternative.

Family Radio Service (FRS) is a segment of the FM radio frequency spectrum that was set aside in 1996 for use by small groups at short ranges. Use of this UHF range--from 462.5625 to 467.7125 MHz--is free and doesn't require an FCC license.

When using an FRS radio, expect reception to be affected by the terrain--thick woods, buildings, and electrical sources will cut your range. However, if you're transmitting to another radio from a mountaintop or other high point, you could reach someone miles away.

The Cobra FRS 110 is especially suited for FRS beginners, with simple control buttons on the front panel. Automatic squelch prevents the radio from activating until a voice signal is received. With squelch, you won't hear random popping and hissing from other electronic devices or atmospheric signals. The keypad lock prevents accidental pressing of buttons, and the call key lets you signal anyone in your party with a distinctive tone.

Families looking for affordable and dependable communication should consider the simplicity and versatility of the Cobra FRS 110 microTALK.

5 out of 5 stars Heck of a bargain for 2 way communication.......2001-11-30

You cannot beat this deal! Two FRS radios, charger and battery (hopefully you will get the NiMH batteries - they are better than Nicad's)
My wife and I use these extensively everywhere-- on the road, in big grocery or department stores, while one of us goes across the street to buy bread (or lottery tickets), or in the basement to put stuff away....time and again these Cobra FRS's have been helpful for inexpensive two-way communication.
In the US, I am sure that there is channel saturation in places (malls and sporting events); still, these are so handy if someone is in the car and needs to drop the other person off to get directions or find a parking spot...you will be amazed at the number of uses you will find for them.
This model has about everything you might need....remember that 500mw is only going to go so far...the laws of physics do not change even if the brand name of your product does! UHF transmissions are best when you and the other party are in "line of sight" and not blocked by large buildings, lots of trees, etc. This is just a fact of life.
But in stores or malls, these radios come in sooo handy...one can shop at the "guy store" while your wife looks at clothes or kitchen junk....and each can brouse to their heart's content, then ring the other when it is time to go the opera (or baseball game!!)....grab this deal, it's a winner!

3 out of 5 stars Great frs set for the price........2001-09-05

Bought this set to use for various things (fairs, boating, camping, around the home, etc..) Great thing was that it came all as one package. Battery packs, clips, charger. Everything I could think of was there. I put these little things to the test and was amazed at the range. In the city was 1 or so miles depending on terrain. Tried it over water and was amassed again at the mile or 2 range. I decided to put it to the last and final test. I took them to the fair where I found out that everyone had them. This pair DOES NOT have the digital sub codes so I heard everyone there. This made the set useless because it was basically a giant party line. Not only could the other person hear what we were saying but so did anyone at the fair. Overall, good units for home, school, camping, hiking. But if your considering using FRS in a large public place consider spending the extra money and getting the digital sub-codes for added security.

4 out of 5 stars Great little FRS set.......2001-08-06

I really like this radio set. I'm not in love with the belt clips, but they are so small I just put them in my pocket. My family just got back from DisneyWorld where we put these to good use. They performed great and sounded better than what most others were using. I really like the "done" tone on the end of each transmission and the call feature is great for getting someone's attention.

3 out of 5 stars FRS110.......2001-06-21

The Cobra FRS110 has to be the simplest to use FRS I have seen. I am an Extra class Amateur radio operator and have seen a number of complex radios. While these radios do not compare to the multi hundred dollar amateur equipment, I was quite impressed. I have purchased radios for business and pleasure use that are somewhat hard to use at first (especially with all the multi-features on a single button). But the Cobra FRS110 is so simple I was able to teach my mom how to use all the features in less than five minutes (and I didn't even have to read the manual). For a two-way radio this inexpensive, it peforms quite well. (When broken down, these radios cost as much as the 49MHz toys but are far much better.) If you plan on getting ANY FRS radio, be sure to get one with rechargable batteries. Also, if you need the CTCSS privacy tones, these radios DO NOT have them, try a higher up model. But I have not had to use CTCSS on FRS yet. Will you get two miles out of these? Maybe if you are outside on a clear day with nothing in between you and the person you are talking to. More than likely you will get three quarters of a mile under normal conditions. Can you talk car to car for some distance? Yes. Do they work well in the mall? Sometimes. Are they great at outside events? Yes. If you need a simple to use two way radio, this package is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Great Units.......2001-05-23

Bought these for a two car caravan. This was my first FRS experience and I think these units work great! I attached the belt clip to the rearview mirror with a very thick #84 rubberband. This allowed for better range through the car's glass. Range will be shortened if you lay the units down on the seat next to you, because the signal is shielded by the metal of the car's body. This version of the model is recommended because you get a charger, batteries and belt clips for only about $10.00 more than just buying the pair of talkies alone. The charge held up to a 3 hour trip, and 3 hour return with a lot of banter between the vehicles. I also used the units at the destination as well as back home before they needed to be recharged. These units do not have the privacy receive codes, but I heard no one else on I-26 or I-95 on the days of our journey. At home, I was able to talk to a few kids in the neighborhood with units that disabled their privacy codes, or did not have them on their units either. The greatest range so far, was a chance contact with some kids on the opposite river bluff near my home. This was at least a mile away and I think it will be quite fun to test the range limits on an upcoming vacation in the mountains. The Cobra radios have some great features and should be quite easy for anyone to use.
