The radio is easy to use. When you are using FRS channels which transmit at 500mw output (1/2 watt) you do not need an FCC license. If you want to use the higher output GMRS (1 watt) channels a license is required. The license is easy to acquire online, and costs $80.
If you're serious about long distance communication perhaps you should look into a higher output GMRS radio (up to 5 watts).
The battery life is rather short so plan on being close to the charger. For the money it's a good buy.

Good Units/Fair Battery Life.......2006-03-21

We purchased the license, online (in about 10 minutes) so that we could utilize the lesser-used GMRS channels. And when just around our home, we use the FRS channels. The signals are clear, though the weather radio has only mild reception, even though we're not too far from the Greater Miami transmitter. The vibra-call is excellent! The battery life though, is only fair. Even when cycling the battery usage, I'm finding that the drain is all too fast. Luckily, you can replace the recharcgeable battery with 3 AAA's in a tight pinch. All in all, they work well!

Channels 1-7 and 15-22 are 1.0 watt GMRS channels
and require an FCC license, which is at least $80
and a lot of paperwork. The exterior of the
package does NOT warn you about this.

The FCC license requirement is not specific
to this radio; it almost certainly applies
to many other radios labeled FRS/GMRS.

My 2-star rating is purely a reflection of the
fact that the packaging and seller don't tell
you that you need an expensive license
to use this product in the USA.
Since I can't legally use this radio, I can't
tell you whether if you get a license you'll
find this radio a bad 1-star product or a
good 5-star product.
