4 out of 5 stars Slick, subtle, and worth a look see.......2006-08-03

This is a movie I did not fully appreciate until after it was over and I wanted to watch it again. The premise is, poor girl Alicia goes to a rich person's school where everyone except her is amoral, meaning in plain English they like sex and drugs. But wait a minute. Who is really into sex and drugs in this movie? Who is really envious of whom? Alicia, who is supposed to be the moral poor girl, ends up in hospital due to a drug overdose. Is Hadley, who is far wealthier than Alicia, really envious of her and not the other way around? Why do we feel such intense sympathy for the comatose Alicia? And why is some of the music, especially the music that plays at the end while the credits are running, so haunting?

This film plays with your mind as you watch it and does not get caught in the process. Great acting doesn't hurt, either.

This movie critic says, check it out.

2 out of 5 stars If You Want to See Soccer Moms Playing Undergraduates.......2005-10-03

"New Best Friend" is another entry in the "steal another woman's life" sub-genre; the best of which are "Single White Female" and "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle"; the worse of which you can catch almost any afternoon on the Lifetime Channel. For some reason this type of identity theft happens exclusively to women.

There are just two basic ways to play this type of story. You can make the woman evil at the beginning and let the audience watch knowingly as she hatches and implements her evil scheme. Or you use misdirection to make her appear a good person, as a seemingly unplanned series of events break in her favor until she is revealed to be evil in the climatic scene. Unfortunately the makers of "New Best Friend" could not decide how they wanted to play it and things crash and burn early. We first meet Alicia (Mia Kirshner) scamming the college's financial aid office for scholarship money. We now know that she is a bad person and will view all her subsequent activity with suspicion. But the director and editor apparently forgot that this revelation had been made and spend the next 50 minutes laying misdirection to make us think that Alicia is a good person. This introduces the only element of suspense, not about whether she is evil but about when the director and editor will wise up and stop wasting our time with transparent misdirection.

"New Best Friend" suffers more than most from the teen movie curse of a cast too old to be portraying undergraduate students. There are really only two big parts, Hadley (Meredith Monroe) and Alicia (Kirshner). They were 31 and 26 respectively at the time of the production. It almost works for the 26 year-old Kirshner when she plays the mousy version of Alicia but it becomes glaring when she is transformed into the glamed-up version of Alicia. Monroe's casting is simply a joke, about like having Nicholette Sheridan try to pass as a classmate on "Lizzie McGwire". She looks much closer to a mid-life crisis than to a term paper.

The producers must have owed a lot of favors because this age issue extends to most of the supporting characters. Taye Diggs who plays the town sheriff is younger than most of the students.

The basic setup is that Hadley and two other rich party girls (played by Dominque Swain-age 21 and Rachel True-age 35) are undergrad roommates at college. They share (as their student residence) a mansion that is nicer and better furnished than the mansion on Real World-New Orleans (a premise more believable than soccer moms playing students). Alicia moves into the mansion and begins to take over Hadley's life. At least that way Swain finally gets a roommate from her own generation so the two can have a lesbian scene. Swain's supporting performance is the only good thing about "New Best Friend" and her love scene with Kirshner is fantastic, so cool and artsy that it doesn't fit with any of the other segments, maybe it was subcontracted out to a good director and cinematographer.

The unintentionally hilarious story is presented in a series of dreary flashbacks of rampant sex and nonstop parties, each proceeded by a shot of a comatose Alicia in a hospital bed. About half of Kirshner's screen time is spent lying motionless with a tube in her mouth. Not a good career move Mia.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

5 out of 5 stars Cut Them Some Slack - New Best Friend Rocks!.......2005-03-01

As both a big fan of this movie and a film student, I feel that critics have been quick to judge this film as bad trash. This film has a sexy edge to it, that many other films in the "teen film" genre dare to exhibit. New Best Friend fullfills a fantasy for those girls who secretly desire to live dangerously and party every night, without it actually becoming a reality. The house is every girl's dream, and these girls are alluring and suavely tempting. The acting is far from terrible, and it was great to see Meredith Monroe in a more sophisticated and darker role than her role as Andie in Dawson's Creek. Dominique Swain once again puts in an A+ effort for her role as the cheeky deviant Sydney. For anyone who loved films like Tart and Cruel intentions, this is the film for you.

5 out of 5 stars Taye Diggs Owns.......2004-03-22

New Best Friend is one of those films that grabs your attention and maintains your suspicion all the way through until the incredible ending. The screenwriting is nothing short of miraculous and Taye Diggs' ability to capture the role of the school detective is truly awe-inspiring. Why Diggs' wasn't up for an Oscar is beyond me and others of his extensive fanbase. If you want an example of acting at it's finest, tune into the scene featuring the drug dealer and witness the intesity Diggs' displays. While the rest of the acting is rather lackluster, Diggs' performance pinpoints him as the obvious catalyst of this marvel of the modern film making industry.

4 out of 5 stars A great movie for a hot date!.......2003-11-13

A poor girl who falls in with rich girls suffers an overdose, and the local sheriff wannabe is brought in to investigate. The rich girls are young and very attractive, especially when they're partying in their spaghetti-strapped dresses. And the poor girl, played by Mia Kirschner, is no slouch in the looks department herself with her dark features and jet black hair.

Mia eventually ingratiates herself with all of the friends; smoking, drinking, and doing drugs - and sharing dark secrets - like when she and Dominique Swain discover that both of them had been molested by their fathers when they were ten-years-old, which causes them to bond by exploring each other's mouths with their tongues, pawing at each other's clothes, and then falling asleep in each other's arms soon afterwards.

Mia then uncovers that Rachel True, a gorgeous fair-skinned black girl, is bulimic; and Mia offers to help her quit when she's ready. Rachel is touched, but rather than make it with Mia, she shares a deep soul kiss with Ms. Swain to continue an on-going relationship with Dominique (who is bisexual).

Dominique is on a roll, but the only girl among her circle of friends she doesn't kiss is Meredith Monroe, who plays Hadley, the story's main character - and main suspect! Meredith looks a lot like Natasha Henstridge (`Ghosts of Mars'), so watching her is definitely easy on the eyes. The most risque thing she does in the movie, though, is get naked (from the back) with her boyfriend in bed. But her performance as a seemingly innocent and helpful best friend is excellent.

Besides Meredith, another fine appearance is made by Taye Diggs as this Southern college town's interim sheriff. He approaches his task with sensitivity and determination, and it is through his eyes - and the flashbacks that he's told - that we get to enjoy the girls' divulged sensuality.

Taye solves the crime, and one of the girls is brought to justice. She ends up behind bars at the movie's end - while we see Dominique, asleep and naked in bed - and lying between both her own boyfriend and another girl! (Gee, I don't remember college life to be this good!)

This movie is well produced - and well paced - and Dominique (who I loved in `Lolita') is definitely fun to follow. This would be a great film to share on a really hot date. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I used to work at the prison when it was a Haunted House and it is really haunted........2006-12-26

I worked at the prison in this movie in 1996. I would love to see this movie but I haven't yet. Hopefully it is at a local Hollywood Video. This prison is really haunted. I experienced a ghost while I was working as an actor at, as it was called at the time, Death Row: The Haunted Prison. I am still loooking up information on the history of this prison but have only found out that it is the former Prison for the Criminally Insane and from hearing various stories from former guards of the prison who worked with the actors. The prison was torn down in early 2000s.

2 out of 5 stars Asylum Of Bad Acting.......2004-06-08

I was lucky to have rented the tape of this movie, rather than having bought it. This is an indie production shot on video. The picture and sound quality both suffer; this is a result of the production and does not refer to the DVD. I will handle different aspects of the movie seperately. Since it has been a while since I have seen this movie, I do not recall the names of the actors and characters (and even if I saw it again today, I doubt I would still recall their names). The Plot: A group of teens? (young adults?) are putting on a haunted house show at an abandoned prison (for the criminally insane?) which is reputed to be haunted, according to what they tell their customers. The prison was shut down as the result of a fire. They call their show the Asylum Of Terror (evil laugh included). The inmate responsible for the fire has escaped from somewhere else and begins a killing spree back at his old haunt. Yep, that about covers the plot. Production: As I have mentioned, the movie was done on video. The camera work varies between good, acceptable and poor. There are a few scenes where it would have benefitted the cameraman to turn off the autofocus. One in particular involves a couple in a car where when one is in focus the other is completely out of focus. The sound suffers much the same where someone more distant from the camera would be that much weaker in volume, especially the actor playing the killer, several times you can barely hear what he is saying. The positive side of the production is the editing; they did a good job with what they had available. There is a scene where the killer sees his dead cellmate and the cellmate is laughing and the shot transitions between the cellmates normal face and a skull face several times. The transitions are well done and the sound is consistent throuhout the transitions. The actor playing the cellmate and the team responsible for the shoot deserve credit. Acting: There are 3 good performances in this movie. I have already mentioned the actor playing the killer's cellmate. The actor who is the main player of this movie does a good job, particularly in a scene where he in showing one of the crew how to ham it up for the customers. There is also an attractive blond woman who unfortunately gets chainsawed, however, she really makes that scene happen. Most of the other acting(?) is no more than line reading. Overall this movie is not very entertaining unless you just have to see every slasher flick that comes out. The bad acting of most of the players is humorous at times. The plot is obvious at the beginning and it adds nothing when it is discovered that the killer was the one responsible for the fire. Aside from the good points I have mentioned, I found myself just waiting for the movie to end. I gave the movie two stars for the aspects which I have mentioned. They do deserve credit for putting this together and getting it distibuted. There are quite a few film-maker hopefuls who do not make it this far.-Bob

A bad movie. Extremely boring and very poorly made!!

1 out of 5 stars WhAt!?.......2002-06-25

I give this movie a 1 only because it started out good.In the end, the movie lost my attention completely. It was about an old prison opening up as a haunted house. A bunch of people were watiing outside to enter. (the sound in this movie was like distint and horrible.) The people weren't really good at acting it seemed like, that was a bad part. The haunted house turned out to be really stupid, i think. There was a killer roaming around the haunted house first dressed as Jason Voorhees, than as Michael Myers. It was such a copy of Friday the 13th and Halloween. After that happened, the movie just got lamer and lamer. I really don't reccommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Fireman Chad.......2004-09-02

Chad Sourbeer has done an extraordinary job writing this captivating book from a young child's perspective. The Author and the Illustrator are a great creative team. They capture how important Brandon feels going to the Fire Station with his Dad. The excitement of going out on a call. The relief when the fire is out and everyone is safe. The Illustrations by Pepe Melan, are striking, bright and colorful. My grandchild loves this book. It is a wonderful book to share with the child in your life.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Day At The Fire Station.......2004-08-30

Chad Sourbeer's story about one of his days at the fire station was written for his then 3 year-old son Brandon, to tell him about what he did on his job. So the story was written with a very young person in mind from the beginning. The contrast between "Brandon's Day at the Fire Station" and other Children's Books on this topic, is the careful way the storyline and the art work by Pepe Melan were blended concurrently to produce a wonderful experience for children of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!!!.......2004-07-31

Wow! I just purchased this book for my son. It is an amazing story and offers insight into the daily lives of firefighters. Brandon's Day is a must have for any kid that is curious about firefighters or fire engines.....Chad Sourbeer is a masterfully creative storyteller. I can't wait for the next book by this rising star of children's literature.

5 out of 5 stars Brandon's day at the Fire Station.......2004-07-30

Brandon's Day....was obviously written with the young reader in mind, but in doing so also educates any adult that might be interested in the real workings of the Fire sevice. I myself am a professional firefighter with children and they LOVE it. I have found myself reading it with them time and time again. Brandon's Day....is a must read for any child or parent that any bit of curiosity or interest in firemen and there jobs. The colorful illustrations and the equally colorful writing are amazing and really are accurate to the actual life of firefighter. I highly recommend Brandon's Day at the Fire Station!!

    Product Description

From the studio that brought you REMEMBER THE TITANS comes an inspirational film based on a true story. Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid), father, teacher, and high school coach, thought his dream was over. He'd had his shot playing baseball, blew out his shoulder, and retired without ever making it to the big leagues. Then, in 1999, Coach Morris made a fateful bet with his perpetually losing team. If they won the district championship, Morris -- who threw a 98 mph fastball -- would try out for the majors. The team went from worst to first, and Jim, living up to his end of the bargain, threw caution to the wind and was on the road to becoming the oldest rookie in the major leagues. This heartfelt, uplifting story about not giving up on your dreams will have everyone cheering.

    Amazon.com

Jim Morris, the real-life hero of The Rookie, has an inspirational story all but guaranteed to put a smile on anyone's face. Happily, this G-rated Disney drama, based on Morris's published memoir of the same title, is suitable for an all-ages audience. Blessed with an awesome fastball, Morris nursed dreams of pitching for Major League Baseball during his 20s; injuries and bad luck, however, forced him to give up hope and become a teacher and coach. Years later, pressed by students and colleagues to try out for "the Show" one more time, Morris discovered he still had a powerful arm, and he was signed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Rookie is at its best throughout this first chapter in Morris's midlife adventure, though the rest of the film finds fresh angles on more familiar baseball-movie conventions. Dennis Quaid is soulful and charismatic as Morris, perfect in his depiction of a man both thankful and startled that destiny has given one of the good guys his due. Appropriate for ages 4 and up. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Never Grow Up.......2007-04-18

What a good movie. After having to call it quits due to a shoulder injury, Coach Jim Morris took another approach to baseball, coaching. After taking over a high school team in Texas, he made a promise to them. He told them that of they won districts, he would try out for a big league team.

After the districts were won, that only left Coach Morris with one thing to do, try out for the majors!

4 out of 5 stars Nice formula movie.......2007-04-01

This is an affecting movie. Many of those who have loved and played basball in their teens has, even if only fleetingly, a question in the back of their minds. Could I make it in baseball? Obviously, very few do succeed in the quest to make the bigs. But lots of us wondered.

This movie is actually two movies in one. First, the local team, with no record of success over the past few years, starts off poorly. They make a deal with their coach (played by Randy Quaid) that if they win the district championship, he--who had once labored in the vineyards of minor league baseball before calling it quits--would attend a try out and try to attain his dream. Needless to say, things work out as you would expect.

Then, upon attending a try out, the coach throws harder than he ever did in his earlier minor league efforts. He goes from a mid-80 MPH fastball when he was younger to a 98 MPH fastball well into his thirties. Makes one wonder? However, this movie is based on a real life story; the real Jim Morris (played by Quaid), indeed, got to the major leagues.

Lots of emotional moments. Baseball afficianados will like this, even if it is formulaic. Others might not "get it," although it is an affecting movie on several levels (father-Morris as son, husband-wife, Morris as father-son).

All in all, worth watching. A lot of fun.

    4 out of 5 stars A wholesome family film.......2007-03-17

This is a good movie to watch with the whole family. It may also spark some interest in baseball for those not already interested. All in all the movie is entertaining, realistic and believable as far as families and emotions are concerned.

5 out of 5 stars The Rookie Shines Like the Stars of Life.......2006-11-10

I feel that the Rookie is by far the best movie that I have ever seen. One cries with Quaid as he wrestles with his love of pitching and we feel the heart and soul that he puts into teaching and coaching, akin to the same "giving his all" to baseball. Quaid teaches all of us that true greatness isn't found in great success, but rather, in doing one's best at whatever task one is given to do. Quaid does this and is rewarded not only by success, but by the love and adulation of the many relationships that he has cultivated, even during the times when things weren't going so well for him!

1 out of 5 stars Baseball lovers only........2006-10-27

If you don't enjoy baseball at all, then you won't enjoy this movie.

I dunno I just don't think watching people do permanent damage to their friend's bodies is all that amusing. Seems like Jackass on MTV (and the first movie) had more clever pranks while this one was more about inflicting pain and damage. I'll admit that I turned it off at the point Steve-o did a sort of reverse beer bong, so maybe it picked up after that point...but that didn't seem likely.

This movie had me laughing so much I had to take asprins because I had gotten a headache. There are to many parts in this movie that had me rolling all over the floor (especially the switcharoo in the bed, the small toilet, bad grandpa).
I'm even compelled to say this movie could even be the best sequel to date since Godfather Part 2.
Well don't take mine or anyone else's word for it, go and see it.

    2 out of 5 stars Surprise! 'Jack'(a--)-in-a-Box.......2007-05-11

Seeing the previews on a review show, `Jackass 2' looked like a barrel of fun. I saw stuntmen propelled in the air for "Fire hose Rodeo," skiing down a stairwell with artificial snow, and a mini loop motorcycle stunt. What I was expecting was `Candid Camera' meets "X"-treme sports novelties. What I mainly got was a "hybrid"* of 'Fear Factor'. I was misled.

Favorably, it all starts out with a bull run that is harrowing and impressively shot. Later, one of the best scenes is a Hollywood movie parody. (Even though there's no plot, per say, the scene is so impressive, that if you must see it, I wouldn`t dare spoil it for you.) In their defense, they certainly are inventive with every stunt they pull.

Then, it gets morbid. Sight gags with snake bites, stunts with shattered glass, and leeches shown to host on a man's "private parts" and his eyeball are definitely an acquired taste. In one scene, a "phallic" image is branded to one stalwart's b--t. To ensure authenticity, they have to show the blood afterwards with participants writhing in pain and onlookers laughing--like it were `The Three Stooges' gone `Gladiator`. (I don't remember laughing at people getting hurt since I was six, but, maybe, it's just me.) Granted the stunt men are professionals and their caveat--to paraphrase, "Don't try this at home, kids--" is amply posted, but I didn`t find it entertaining. Male b--t shots, feces, vomiting, and actors dressed as elderly people with fake genitals hanging out of garments are the obsessive bill of fare presented. (To their credit, their inventive hijinx is only fractionally represented here.)

I felt like I had entered an impressive carnival and left a freak show that mainly made me feel queasy.

"Let the buyer beware?" Maybe. Not asking for a refund, I, nonetheless, would like other thrill seekers to make an informed decision before entering this circus tent.

*with elements that remind one of the initials associated with Marquis de Sade.

For all its flaws, Powder is still worthwhile for attempting to be unique and well intentioned. The film's qualities were overshadowed after its 1995 release when it was revealed that writer-director Victor Salva had served 15 months in prison for molesting a child actor during production of the 1988 TV movie Clownhouse. Controversy aside, Powder is a welcome step off the beaten path with sufficient strengths to balance its weaknesses. Fantasy and drama combine in the story of a teenager known as Powder for his snow-white skin. Powder is introduced into a tiny Texas community after spending his entire life in his grandparents' basement. He's a wise genius, but an outcast, alienated by those who misunderstand and fear him. When a schoolmaster (Mary Steenburgen) and science teacher (Jeff Goldblum) discover that Powder has a capacity for empathic insight and possesses the power to control electricity, the unusual boy becomes a tragic Christ-like figure--peaceful, prophetic, and perhaps too good to survive in the real world. In telling this heartfelt story, Powder struggles to be all things to all viewers--equal parts E.T. and The Elephant Man--which compromises its overall impact. But even though it's not a great movie, it sincerely tries to accomplish something original and wonderful, and that's more than most movies can claim. --Jeff Shannon

An amazing movie which will touch your heart on where we are all to walk with our Creator.

4 out of 5 stars Often Shunned Movie - Quite Refreshing.......2007-06-11

Ok, here's the deal with Powder.... Apparently the guy who wrote and directed it was convicted as a child molester!!!! Oh my gawd! Yeah. True story. My wife won't even entertain the thought of watching this movie lest she become tainted by some underlining pedophile message transcoded in the subtext of the movie. Hmmmm. I remember way back when this movie came out and I saw the preview at the theater. I kinda wanted to see it. But then the whole child-molester thing came to surface and years went by. Well, I finally bout it of Amazon for like five bucks and I gave it a try. Know whart? It was pretty damn good. Sure the whole freaky-looking outcast with super powers thing has been done, but this was a decent flick. Jeff Goldblum and Steenburgen co-star. Sean Michael Flannery is fantastic as Powder in all his shy, wounded frailty. Overall, I liked it. So... push the whole sex-offender thing asidE and give Powder a try. You won't be disappointed.

    Dig it!

2 out of 5 stars I have no hair, but I didn't like this movie.......2007-06-06

I, like Powder, do not grow hair. Actually, unlike powder, I have no eyelashes. I'm not albino though.

In my life I have never encountered such generic hostility as powder was subjected to..

For being such a genius powder certainly did not show it. I don't remember him saying anything even remotely smart. He had a nice memory and apparently scored well on some lame test? However, he didn't show any smarts where it counts....

For a character with such powerful empathy (telepathy would actually be the much more accurate word here) he was annoyingly whiny, angry, and obnoxious. I understand that he had been sheltered his entire life, but his character had absolutely no depth or complexity whatsoever. His lines are complete cliche.

Every person in the film is a lame and shallow caricature.

The message of the movie is a good one, but a couple sentences would get it across just as effectively as this two hour movie.

To me this movie is simple pulp, nothing more and nothing less.

5 out of 5 stars Powder is excellent...........2007-04-16

this movie points out to us that which we are all capable of...a moving reminder of our own preciousness...

I loved this quirky movie. I am glad to have it on dvd.

4 out of 5 stars Ward hangs his head in shame.......2006-08-23

This movie is the adaptation of the 1960s TV show The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. It was a failed atempt though. This movie is slow and lacks that certian Ward cleverness. However this movie continues the traditional talking to the narrator and know it's a movie. However this movie would be a 3 if not for a fabulous animation scene in which Bullwinkle surfs the internet to get to New York in order to save Rocky and FBI agent Karen Sympathy. For those fimilair with the show may find this movie a disgrace like I. But those just getting into it or just buying this movie I'd recomend it too.

2 out of 5 stars Cute - But Inferior to the source.......2006-06-27

The high point of the film is when Robert DeNiro, as Fearless Leader, confronts Boris (Jason Alexander) over the news the "Moose and Squirrel" have escaped again.
DeNiro adjusts his monacle, and asks:
"Are you talking to me? Are you talking to ME? You MUST be talking to me, because no one else is here!"

Of course, if you've never seen 'Taxi Driver' it's not funny.
Since I have, I fell off the couch...

    4 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Fun Movie.......2006-06-08

I remember seeing this in the theater (in retrospect, it seems crowded considering its mediocre box office intake) and really enjoying it. You'd think an update of an animated series as subversive and clever as the orginal Rocky and Bullwinkle would invariably fail miserably, but I think all of the charm of the original and its wit is recreated here.

R&B were truly a product of their era, references to the cold war were everywhere, but the movie is able to use the same style of humor very well while updating it to today.

There are lots of unexpected movie star cameos, if you're into that sort of thing, but it was a joy to me just to hear June Foray, a wondefully tallented voice actress, just giving voice to Rocky one last time. Unfortunately, Bill Scott, the original Bullwinkle, has passed on but his son plays him here and the difference is close to unnoticable.

This should not be your first exposure to Moose and Squirell, I highly suggest that those unfamiliar with the series check out the reasonably priced "Best of" DVD, or a whole season set even, before watching this. The movie is a lot more enjoyable to longtime fans.

5 out of 5 stars Moose and Squirrel.......2005-12-12

I loved it how,Rocky tied up the bad guys, now that's gutsy! just like my Angel of truth and justice. Kim Possible!

3 out of 5 stars i suggest you buy roger rabbit instead........2005-12-01

i could say that this is a bit disapointing.

    so buy roger rabbit instaed.

If they won the district championship, Morris -- who threw a 98 mph fastball -- would try out for the majors. The team went from worst to first, and Jim, living up to his end of the bargain, threw caution to the wind and was on the road to becoming the oldest rookie in the major leagues.
