I love the journey Christy Turlington takes you on in this book...it is very educational and inspiring to see how Christy transformed her life and has taken the spiritual path in the midst of all the things going on in her life...I feel compelled to stay the course I am on in my Yoga experience....she is a beautiful woman inside and out and I feel blessed to have found this beautifully put together book...the photos are amazing..

Not what I expected.......2005-12-07

The title of the book may be misleading. Although there is some good information about yoga in general the book is mostly a personal story of Christy's life. It's not that her life isn't interesting, it's just a little distracting when you think the book is supposed to be about yoga. There are nice pictures of Christy modeling certain yoga asanas spread out throughout the book. The yoga information presented is also helpful and easy to understand. The book in general is nice but I don't think I would recommend it to anyone I know. It is not enough of a yoga book nor enough of a biography book.

Just a note that Christy Turlington is *not* the first "mainstream celebrity" to write about yoga; Raquel Welch wrote a book on yoga back in the 1980s.

Model offers sincere insight into yoga.......2005-01-18

Dont dismiss this book simply because of the author is a famous model. Christy interweaves her personal journey with her yoga practice. I especially appreciated reading about how she incorporated her practice with her faith.She offers a brief synopsis of the main yoga methods. AT times I felt like she cut and paste theology term papers into the text but I appeciate the clarity she gave me on the very confusing differences in yoga from reasoned voice.

A personal book.......2004-04-04

Christy shows herself to be a person of great depth. To share something that has changed her life so positively comes across in her book as an act of love. There are more important things in life than the money and fame of being a supermodel. She has shown the world that she knows it.

As inspirational as it is beautiful..........2003-01-29

I'm always a little suspicious when I see a book like this one, which, by all appearances, appears to be cashing in on the yoga-as-fitness-trend phenomenon. So I was when I received this book as a birthday gift. But Kathy Phillips has given us a thing of beauty in "The Spirit of Yoga." A long-time practitioner and teacher, Phillips questions this trend, while acknowledging her own contribution to it. After reading this qualification, I devoured every page. Phillips gives a rich, if brief, history and description of the various paths of yoga practice, as well as gorgeous visuals and instructions on the poses basic to many yoga styles. Chapters on breathing and meditation help to complete what are for many practitioners the fundmental physical aspects of yoga. I've only been practicing for two years, and I try to maintain a balanced approach to what I see as blatant attempts at unnecessary or useless materialism that doesn't seem true to the aims of yoga. This book is definitely indulgent eye-candy, but in the best way - clean, beautiful layout and design, excellent photography and visuals that are respectful of the tradition. I would recommend "The Spirit of Yoga" both to anyone curious about beginning a yoga practice, as well as to any seasoned practioner who can take the time to read past its obvious coffee-table function!

A great insight of Yoga history and its meaning........2002-11-12

This is a beautiful book to look at, but the author uses lots of celebrity names and past gurus, which pronouncing their 15 letter names I found to be quite distracting. However, if you are looking for a book that gives the meaning and origin of the poses that are used in everyday yoga class this is for you. Overall, I found the book to be filled with answers when it comes to sorting out all the different types of yoga and helping me to decide which practice is for me.

A beautiful exploration of the Yoga tradition.......2002-10-29

THE SPIRIT OF YOGA is truly a beautiful book. Part educational text, part testimonial by master practitioners, part collection of stunning and inspirational photography, this book has it all. I am a Yoga newcomer, and I found THE SPIRIT OF YOGA to be very helpful. It makes me wonder why I didn't find Yoga sooner.

Enjoyable - but only if you are into fashion..........2005-02-09

Yes they are overpaid. Yes they are overrated...but then again, who wouldn't give their right arm just to be one of them for a day. Catwalk is an engrossing look at a top model going through one season of shows. It would've been more fascinating if the documentary had focused on some no-name lesser known model fighting her way thru the industry to get recognized...but there are some amazing moments in this documentary - primarily John Galliano's show where the models are reminiscent of Russian Princesses in sweeping ballgowns running down the runway like they are being chased to the sounds of "Ride of the Valkyaries" -- the Malcolm McClaren soundtrack is beautiful (you can buy it - called PARIS) - all in all interesting to sit through, but wish there was a bit more depth to the nitty gritty of the industry - i felt as if it was a bit too romanticized.

Great Supermodel Documentary.......2004-05-27

The video documentary "CATWALK" is way better then it should be. Beautifully shot, great Malcolm Mclauren soundtrack, all the supermodels. This video stars the freakishly beautiful supermodel Christy Turlington and takes place when Supermodels ruled the world and lived the lives of rockstars (witness some lady telling Christy, "We Love you Christy" on the way to a fashion show.

Christy takes us behind the scenes to a life of a supermodel during the fashion weeks in Milan, Paris, and NYC. She takes us to 5 star Hotels, Nightclubs, and house parties with other supermodels.

Ms. Turlington doesnt show any of the darker sides of the modeling industry, which is the only thing missing from this film. But, this documentary is wonderful journey that show us a side of Christy, Naomi Campbell, and Kate Moss that is rarely seen by the public.

A Must for Fashionistas!.......2003-09-09

Should I be embarrased to say I found this documentary completely engrossing? From the initial cover shoot at Versace to the closing shots of Christy T. sitting for a Francisco Clemente portrait (it's haunting and beautiful -- he's the artist that did the artwork for the movie "Great Expectations" BTW), I was glued to this movie. The soundrack includes "St. Germain" by Malcolm McClaren, which I love, during the Paris collections. Many parts are beautifully shot in black and white. Some great moments go by quickly: a really funny exchange between Christy and model Veronica Webb, Kate Moss drunk at a club in Milan, behind the scenes at Galliano ("Think Irving Penn, Irving Penn!!"), ALT commenting on the same collection ("This man HAS NO MONEY!"), Christy eyeballing Naomi's gift flower bouquet at the Georges V ("Is hers bigger than mine?"), the whole documentary is full of great stuff.

diverting.......2002-03-09

An amusing but tepid documentary. I alway thought of Christie as beautiful for sure. But when you see her walk and talk, she is so BLAND. She has to be the least sensual beautiful woman I've ever seen. She has no sensuality. She's kind of nerdy even. She doesn't have any wit. She once said, "I'm known as the nice supermodel. I want to be known as the smart supermodel." Well, she's definitely nice, but in a bland way. And it's funny to see some physical flaws in her in this film. She has ugly feet. Most people's feet flare out toward the toes. But her feet are rectangular shaped, the sides being straight lines. Weird looking feet. And sometimes when she smiles, her lip goes above her gumline, so there's a big gap of gum-space above her teeth. Gross to look at. Anyway, this is over-all a diverting but hardly fascinating film.

A surprisingly watchable documentary. Christie is the Audrey Hepburn of supermodels, with all the graciousness and class and poise that Hepburn had, and so is a treat to watch move and talk and walk in CATWALK. When you have big-headed, sometimes nasty supermodels like Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell annoying the public, it's nice to have a kind Christie Turlington to prove that just because you're beautiful doesn't mean you can't be humble. It's a shame that Christie was diagnosed with emphysema at age 31. She said smoking cigarettes from aged 13 to 26 is probably what brought it on. It's hard to have much sympathy for the rich, famous and beautiful, but my heart does go out to Christie because she seems such a lovely, lovely person in every way, as CATWALK shows.

Lifetime's Intimate Portrait: Cindy Crawford takes the viewer on a whirlwind tour of its namesake model's life, using candid interview footage, numerous family and fashion photos, and other media and industry clips. Starting with a Chicago department-store brassiere ad at the age of 16, Crawford worked her way up the modeling ladder and debuted in New York as "baby Gia," a look-alike to the famous model Gia Carangi, who tragically died of a heroin overdose in her prime.
