3 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-03-18

I expected this movie to be a piece of crap by looking at the cover of it, but after some convincing by my fiance I finally agreed to watch it. This movie ended up being really good & I was quite surprised. I did go into this with low expectations so I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. If you are a fan of the horror genre then I think you will like this one.

2 out of 5 stars Is this the Brokeback Mountain of Slasher flicks?.......2006-06-23

Not Bad Not Great. Ok lets start off with a group of good looking kids including a hotter then donut grease lesbian couple with my favorite buck toothed actress Estella Warren and some other girl with dreads. We also have the 2 studs that are petting each other and looking longly into each others eyes, not to worry though homophobes nothing happens at all between any one.
Witch to me is a missed opportunity with theses two young ladies, I mean damn this is a slasher flick and heck this is a new idea for the genre.
Now lets talk about the cover of the dvd witch has some pretty blond girl that does not seem to be in the movie. Look up Trespassing to see the original cover art.
Who is the dude with the red-eyes or what do's the bloody sickle have to do with this flick?
Not bad used for $3.00 bucks off Amazon with a great cast and a weak plot.

5 out of 5 stars A Contender For "Greatest Unheralded Horror Of The Decade".......2005-11-10

"Evil Remains" is one of the most totally captivating, most intense, well-done, horrific and just plain Best movies to come out in what's been a great last few years for movies in general and horror movies in particular, so much so that it's hard to see how this one flew so far under the radar.

A group of young college students is heading up to do some research on an abandoned estate where violent murders took place some years ago. Sound familiar? Well, at First it is (but in a good way, reminiscent to me of the first time I saw the first "Friday The 13th" or the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre") but "Evil Remains" departs from the familiar trail before long. What we have is a movie that starts shifting and opening up questions as to the real nature of what's happening. Is this, indeed, "Friday The 13th" territory, or is it more along the lines of "The Amityville Horror" or even "The Blair Witch Project"? Is what's happening real? If it is, what is the nature of that reality? The characters don't know, don't have a lot of opportunity to find out, and the more cryptic it gets the better. "Evil Remains" presents multiple possibilities of what's happening and then keeps shifting the scales of probability back and forth and throwing monkeywrenches into the gears at the same time. It's also loaded up with truely interesting and likable characters, many of whom have intriguing backstories that are only briefly referred to or hinted at but that play roles in their own motivations and in the movie's larger story. And these hinted backgrounds rip open some new possibilities of their own. I would just leave it at that, vague as it is, but with this movie having gone largely unseen, I'd really like to encourage people to at least give it a chance, and I'm going to point out a few things that I think might draw people in. I'm not going to go past the halfway point of the movie but nonetheless, if you're already planning on seeing it, you might want to stop reading now.

***WARNING: POSSIBLE SEMI-SPOILERS(1ST HALF OF MOVIE ONLY) AHEAD ****

- In a lot of horror movies, a variation on one of two approaches is used: show the monster and the mayhem; or don't show it, use hints and suggestions, and let imagination take over. Both are perfectly valid approaches that have helped create many great horror movies. "Evil Remains" is perhaps the ultimate example of a movie that does both: I don't think I've ever seen such a full-throttle and visually horrific movie that still leaves so much to puzzle out and wonder about and imagine.

- Fans of truly gruesome horror take note: Leatherface's leather mask is brutally disturbing and Freddy Krueger's razor claws are deadly, but the 'dark bizarre' ante gets upped again here. Have you ever heard of a killer(?)(apparition?)(hallucination?) that wears the filleted head of a dog he murdered as a mask?

- If that makes some fans want to turn away from this, it should be re-iterated how interesting and likable the 'non-evil' characters are on here. All helped along by great acting, and many of them carrying some kind of mystery of their own, these very empathisable characters are, I think, going to win over some viewers who usually shy away from the more graphic horror to how great a lot of these movies can be, from "Friday The 13th" to "House Of 1,000 Corpses" and "Saw", for starters.

- Speaking of graphic horror, how about human-sized sharp steeljawed snare-trap type devices? That look nothing like anything factory made but dead-on exactly like something a psychopath with a working forge and sufficient time wuld cobble together in a basement of horrors, or a totally insane, possibly possessed mind, would conjure up? People who still advocate trappers setting up these things in the woods may think a bit differently after seeing "Evil Remains".

- Finally, if you've liked any of the following (and I know this is an eclectic batch, but this movie aggressively tears open a Lot of possibilities) I'd really urge you to check "Evil Remains" out: "Friday The 13th" , "Amityville" (especially the second one, from 1981), "Wrong Turn", "Fear Runs Silent", "The Blair Witch Project", "Tourist Trap", "Saw" or "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

Truly one of horror's great undiscovered treasures.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of potential, not a lot of substance........2005-08-28

This movie starts out, like most, with a pretty good plot, though it soon deteriorates into just another long, dragged out borefest. For example, you'll get annoyed with the never-ending card game, as well as the painfully tedious conversations between characters who become possessed (ala The Shining), most notably between Estella Warren's character and her on-screen girlfriend as they hide out (I won't give away more than that, in the event you actually want to see this one). On the positive side, Estella Warren's acting is actually pretty good (better than The Planet of the Apes, anyway). In sum, though, I wouldn't recommend this one.

Just by way of background, and while other reviewers seems to prefer to reveal much of the story and plot, I think that sort of ruins the film in many cases. So, you'll want to look for other reviews and reviewers if that is what you are looking for...

2 out of 5 stars SWAMPED.......2005-08-20

Although set in the usually eerie swamplands of Louisiana, EVIL REMAINS doesn't go too far in advancing the tired cursed land story. A group of students venture off to a supposedly cursed plantation to disprove the myth of it being cursed. Seems twenty years earlier, an abused boy murdered his sadistic father and passive mother, but his body was never recovered. (Hint, hint). The movie tries to achieve some atmospheric chills and its cast is more than capable, but it's too talky and under-directed to provide true chills.

Tangled is meant to describe the messy web of the characters' emotions, but it could just as well apply to the ornate plot of this tale of an overheated collegiate love triangle. David (Shawn Hatosy, Outside Providence) is madly in love with Jenny (Rachael Leigh Cook, She's All That), but she falls for his old friend Alan (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Velvet Goldmine). Though David knows that Alan has a history as a heartbreaker, nothing he says convinces Jenny that she's making a mistake--until Alan starts behaving erratically, and David has to take steps to protect her... steps that grow increasingly drastic. Though the actors are all attractive and have done good work in other films, the script of Tangled is disjointed and overwrought. Also featuring Lorraine Bracco as a police detective and Estella Warren (2001's Planet of the Apes) as a blond temptress. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars Can I get a refund for that ninety minutes of my life?.......2007-04-13

    Tangled (Jay Lowi, 2001)

Shawn Hatosy has been doing the character-actor thing in Hollywood for a long time. Lowi, in his first feature film, gives Hatosy a starring role, and pairs him opposite established stars Rachael Leigh Cook (Antitrust) and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Titus), as well as throwing Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos) into the mix-- and he still can't come up with a good movie.

Now, I'll watch Jonathan Rhys Meyers in anything, and I have, and I still had trouble with this mess. The basic idea: David Klein (Hatosy) wakes up in a hospital with a police detective (Bracco) at his side. It seems Kelin's girlfriend Jenny (Cook) and his best friend Alan Hammond (Meyers) are both missing from the wreckage of Hammond's car, where Klein was found. Klein relates the story of the relationship between the three of them to the detective, piecemeal, with scenes from the present intercut.

Predictable, boring, cliched, two-dimensional, need I go on? If the ending of Jodi Picoult novels comes as a shock to you, you may find the big reveal here to be a surprise. No one else will. * ½

4 out of 5 stars I was surprised after people panned it.......2006-06-11

I thought... what the heck, I'll watch it. So I did. I loved it. I was SO surprised none of the critics liked it. It was well made and the characters are all rather believable. I was surprised at how many bad reviews it got. I thought it was rather good.

1 out of 5 stars Tangled gets tangled in its own self......a big bore.......2005-10-31

Shawn Hatosy (The Faculty, Outside Providence) is in love with Rachael Leigh Cook (She's All That, Antitrust) but she doesnt love him, she only wants to be his friend, then enter Hatosy's friend, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (Tv's Elvis, Velvet Goldmine) who becomes Cook's boyfriend and Hatosy becomes jealous from this....who hasnt gotten made when a friend seduces the girl you love....you know what, who cares really. Hatosy tells the story in flashback telling the story to cop Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos, Medicine Man). This boring story has no likable characters and invokes really thin interest with me. Cook is really stale, Hatosy, as much as a good actor he is is rendered dull and Meyers plays another sleaze ball like in most of his thrillers. Worth a look and by god Im not looking again and towards the end you're like....WHY I DID I RENT THIS?!!. Also starring Estella Warren (Planet of the Apes remake).

5 out of 5 stars Great acting, great plot, great movie.......2005-08-31

It's definitely a must-see. Very climatic, mysterious thriller/love story which will leave you fascinated long after watching.

4 out of 5 stars Love Triangle Thriller.......2005-04-27

Tangled is a smart and edgy thriller with a talented young cast.
A college student, David (Shawn Hatosy),wakes in a hospital bed to tries to recall the events leading to his severe injuries to a detective (Lorraine Bracco) who is investigating the disappearance of David's girlfriend Jenny (Rachael Leigh Cook). David's tells his story is told in flashbacks.
When Estranged best friends david and Alan (Jonathan Rhys Meyers)meet again they end up fighting for the affections of david's crush jenny. The mysterious Alan wins her heart but soon his love for jenny becomes a obsession David must help her threw Alan's dangerous behavior but still also still tries to help Alan. But than things goes terribly wrong.

National Lampoons is at its hilarious best with their latest comedy classic, Pucked starring Jon Bon Jovi and David Faustino (TV's Married with Children). Frank Hopper (Bon Jovi) is a former lawyer, long-term loser and constant dreamer - and frankly, probably just not all that bright. When he receives a credit card in the mail, he believes he's hit the jackpot. It's not long before he's working his way toward financing his dream - an all-woman hockey team. He's also put himself in debt to the tune of more than $300,000. Naturally, he winds up in court when his plan backfires.

Actualy, i found this movie pretty good and fun:) And Jon Bon Jovi is good in it, don't trust some online critics that can not see it...

      1 out of 5 stars Pucked up.......2007-05-29

This is yet another example of why it's just about always a bad idea for NATIONAL LAMPOON to give pseudo-celebrities their chance to take a lead role in one of their films. Paris Hilton bombed in BOTTOMS UP and Michael Douglas' son had a career-ending flick in ADAM AND EVE. The present film, with John Bon Jovi, belongs in this same infamous league of NL flops.

It becomes painfully obvious from watching this movie that John Bon Jovi can't act - not even just for an NL movie. [Of course, he can't sing either, but that's another story altogether] He has no screen presence @ all and mouths his lines as though he is reading off of cue cards (which he probably is). Not ever, ever, EVER seeing Bon Jovi in another movie again would be a very good thing in my book.

The plot is pretty simple. Bon Jovi plays a con artist who tries to get a women's hockey league going. The "catch" is that the women all look like Victoria's Secret models (with the exception of 1 girl). As he doesn't have the resources to finance such a venture, he uses ENRON techniques of book-keeping to keep his mis-guided "dream" alive.

Being that this is an NL film, one would think that there would be a lot of opportunity for some locker room scenes. Inexplicably, they don't really take advantage of this. Sure, there are a few flashes of nudity here & there, but if you blink you will miss them. This aspect of the movie was VERY disappointing. I've seen some NL movies in the past that were lame but were redeemed by the amount of T & A they had.

Along those lines, the only thing that remotely saves this DVD is the special feature. It's as though the producers say "We know that you (the viewer) wanted to see topless women." {Question: why didn't they put more in the movie then?} At any rate, they have some funny "topless interviews" with girls from the film - even though the questions are very lame. They also have some locker room scenes that we were all expecting to see in the movie itself. Guess that it's better to have it in the Special Features than nowhere @ all.

I can't recall ever saying that a DVD's special features were better than the movie itself, but that is the case here. NL has put out some of the very best party movies of all time (VAN WILDER, VACATION, ANIMAL HOUSE to name a few). Unfortunately, this one is not one of them. In fact, it's not even close!

5 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi rocks in Pucked!.......2007-05-15

While the movie got terrible reviews, I and my 21 year old son LOVED this movie! Jon Bon Jovi was incredible and the cast was amusing and there were subtle jokes all through it so you have to pay attention! I am thrilled with this movie!

4 out of 5 stars pretty funny, much better than previous lampoon releases.......2007-05-07

This movie was a lot better than recent movies released by "National Lampoon", or at least a watered down version of a name you used to be able to trust. As compared to recent releases such as Spring Break and Pledge this, this movie gets an oscar for best picture. This follow Jon Bon Jovi as Frank, a down and out invetor/thinker who gave up a life as a lawyer to pursue a career in promotion and sales. When he thinks he's lost it all, filling out a simple survey brings new fortune and potential fame his way, along with changing the lives of many others for the better. David Faustino (Married with Children) is co star as Franks best friend, and unlikely legal consultant when the bubble gets busted. Rent this movie, find out what happens, and chuckle while you do it. Worth a rental, or purchase.

      3 out of 5 stars Good message.......2007-05-07

This movie is not bad for a National Lampoon. The message is good.

Kids will be drawn to Kangaroo Jack because of the playful antics of a computer-generated kangaroo; however, they'll probably be bored stiff as they endure the absurd and over-elaborate plot. Charlie (the charmless Jerry O'Connell) and his best friend Louis (the reasonably amusing Anthony Anderson) run afoul of Charlie's mob boss stepfather. He insists that they deliver $50,000 to a mystery man in the Australian outback--or else. Along the way, these two dimwits put Louis's bright red jacket (which happens to contain the money) on a kangaroo they think they've accidentally killed, which awakens and bounds off. Belabored and nonsensical chases follow, along with the usual realizations about the importance of friendship, etc. Kangaroo Jack has a lot more sexual innuendo and violence than you'd expect, none of which is either funny or thrilling. Christopher Walken and Estella Warren get through their supporting roles largely unscathed. --Bret Fetzer

          Description

Stop that 'Roo! The chase is on when two bumbling Brooklyn buddies sent to deliver a $50,000 mob pay envelope cross paths with a hip-hopping prankster of a kangaroo who sprints off with the loot.

4 out of 5 stars This IS a funny and entertaining movie........2006-11-19

I'm really surprised how this movie has gotten some bad reviews here.
Sounds more like some people didn't like it because it doesn't conform to their own ideas of what a movie should be. I loved it for it's originality and entertainment. The whole family liked this one. No it's not a 5-star movie to go on the classics list. But it is a good movie. Enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars A FEW KICKS HERE AND THERE.......2006-11-13

I'm sure that CSI producer Jerry Bruckheimer doesn't hold this somewhat lame movie close to his heart, but it's really not all that bad. KANGAROO JACK, the titular hero, is NOT a talking kangaroo, but the CGI generated marsupial does provide a few laughs. Jerry O'Connell stars as the stepson of gangster Christopher Walken in an atypically ineffective performance> He and his buddy (the annoying Anthony Anderson) find themselves off on a courier mission with $50,000 to Australia. Once there, however, they lose the money when Anderson puts his jacket with the money in it on the kangaroo, who they thought was dead. Aha, he's not and the roo makes off with the dough and Walken sends his own son to take care of things. Along the way, they meet the lovely Estella Warren and start off on their journey on farting camels.
Yes, it's a silly movie, but a good time passer if you don't have anything else to watch.

This is a stupid movie. There's nothing wrong with stupid movies. If you want to see something stupid, watch this. You will be entertained by how stupid it is. If you want to see a serious well done movie, don't watch this. You won't like it. The whole movie is just an excuse to make a cgi kangaroo. Why? I guess some crackpot thought kids would like it, and then somehow it snowballed into...this. They didn't even try to make the kangaroo cute. It's just like omg what is going on in the world everyone is crazy. Someone said let's make a movie about a cgi kangaroo, and the response was a nonchalant "sure, whatever, here's 60 mil".

Man this movie funny it keeps you goingwith laughter.Thats all ill really say.But wow it was good .Id give it 4 stars becuase jackylegs isnt in the movie too much. The movie had mature ,extermely strong sexual themes ,and language. The should of definately gotton a PG-13 Rating for languge, action violence, and some sexual content.Parents or older teens careful with younger viewers or you might regret specific content thell see and hear.

          1 out of 5 stars Kangaroo Krap.......2006-08-28

I saw this on a bus from Shaoxing to Hangzhou. Dubbed in Chinese with Chinese subtitles, and I was listening to THE LIVE ALBUM by The Charlie Daniels Band. I didn't need the sound to know this movie is horrible. Lemme quit editing my books and write a new one about kangaroos wearing sunglasses, and Mafia money, and funny Hollywood fat guys being funny Hollywood fat guys, and farts. Lots of farts. Shakespeare, Lu Xun, Dickens, James Joyce, Dr Seuss -- didn't they all insist on at least seven fart jokes per page?

The Cooler is Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy), the unluckiest man in Vegas. His bad luck is so contagious that Shelly Kaplow (Alec Baldwin), the last of the old-time mobsters, uses Bernie to kill the high rollers' action at his casino. but when Bernie meets Natalie (Maria Bello) and falls in love, he gives a whole new meaning to being "unlucky in love".

The premise of this swinging Vegas picture is enough to carry it over its narrative rough spots. The unluckiest sap on the planet (William H. Macy) is employed as a "cooler" at a casino; his very presence can chill the hot streak of any patron on a roll. He's valued by the old-school manager of the place, a role given a two-fisted, bourbon-swilling incarnation by Alec Baldwin. Macy means to quit, but then he falls for a waitress (the excellent Maria Bello, from Permanent Midnight)--might his luck be changing? The subplots are pretty much a mess, but the frank sex scenes between Macy and Bello give the movie a truly offbeat feel. The tawdry air of a second-rate casino is also nicely done: This is not the new family-friendly Las Vegas, but a tough place of superstitions, sinister back rooms, and shabby motels. The characters are perfectly at home. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable movie, but Vegas still sucks.......2007-06-15

If you watched this movie because you like Las Vegas, then you're an idiot for liking Las Vegas, old or new. The ignorance of people who lose money due to casino gambling can't be topped. If they're so ignorant that they don't know they're guaranteed to lose in the long run, then they deserve their misfortune entirely, and no one should be allowed to have any sympathy for them, regardless of the addictive properties. Gamblers have got to be among the stupidest people on the face of the planet. Go puff a few thousand more cigarettes and get out of here already.

4 out of 5 stars Two main themes: luck, and the struggle between the Old and New Vegas .......2007-05-18

The Cooler stars William H. Macy the loveable loser Bernie Lootz, a downtrodden Las Vegas resident with a bad streak of luck at gambling. In order to pay off a debt to the crooked thug manager of the Shangri-La casino (played by Alec Baldwin), Bernie works for seven years as a casino "cooler." He's a man of such bad luck that the manager pays him to visit tables and kill large winning streaks. Just Bernie's presence is enough to ruin anyone's luck.

When Bernie's time is up, he plans to leave Las Vegas for good. The Shangri-La manager has other plans--how could he let his secret casino moneymaker walk? Manager Shelly conspires to keep Bernie around with a love interest, a cocktail waitress with a checkered past (played by Maria Bello). When Bernie and the waitress fall in love, his luck changes, throwing the world of the Shangri-La in turmoil.

The Cooler is about two main themes: luck, and the struggle between the Old and New Vegas. The idea that one man can ruin anyone's streak is ridiculous, but it plays out well in the movie, and Maria Bello's character fits as a fairy tale princess who changes Bernie's outlook on life. Throughout the movie, Shelly is struggling with new casino management who want to modernize the Shangri-La, stop using coolers and back room thugs to keep the action in line, and move into more subliminal marketing strategies. Shelly has a fantasy about the elegance of Old Vegas and is unwilling to give up his kingdom in the Shangri-La.

William H. Macy and Mario Bello deliver top-notch performances in this dark romantic movie. Alec Baldwin overacts at times, but still captures the essence of a man unwilling to give up the only world he knows, that of the Shrangri-La.

2 out of 5 stars and what was the name of that little guy with the cloud over his head in "lil abner"?.......2007-05-12

one of the themes here is akin to that of "casino", i.e. the end of the old las vegas. much like movies that bemoan the passing of manhattans deuce, i guess you had to be there to get it. otherwise this is a turgid soap opera/fantasy about william macy, professional loser who is used by casino owner alec baldwin to serve as a hex on gamblers who are winning too big. until the day he falls in love and loses his sprcial skill. the movie should have been better than it is, but a screenplay that reads like it came out of a college "how to write a screenplay" course just brings it down to a tad below mediocre.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding Performances in an All Around Good Movie.......2007-05-11

Shelly Kaplow is an old fashioned casino owner in this brilliant Wayne Kramer film. Shelly is played perfectly by a once lost actor Alex Baldwin, whose previous failures as a leading man have led him down the path of becoming an absolutely magnificent character actor. Shelly is a man Who runs his casino his way, despite being urged by other forces (including Ron Livingston's great performance as Larry Sokolove) to update his business beyond Las Vegas nostalgia. Shelly also employs "Coolers"; these are people who carry an array of bad luck and destroy the luck of even the hottest casino tables. Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy) is the very best Cooler in the business and despite their checkered past, he is also Shelly's only real friend. Bernie's luck is terrible until he finds love in the form of Maria Bello's Natalie. His luck turns as he is planning to leave the business and Shelly is trying to talk him out of it. So the stage is set for these actors to roam free and walk us through a delightful and at times shocking thriller.

I laughed at these characters and thoroughly enjoyed watching the actors absolutely rule the screen in this enjoyable little movie. Macy normally must outshine stronger roles around him as a supporting actor but here we see him in a rare feature role and he is as good as ever. Macy comes off as perpetually unnerved by all the cards he is dealt in his life no matter what they are. The only time Macy is upstaged or equaled is by Maria Bello's convincing opposite role as Natalie, and the furious and often hilarious performance unleashed by Alec Baldwin. Ironically, we see Baldwin take the reins and steal scenes in a supporting role from a career supporting role master in Macy, and his leading role here. I knew Baldwin was good because the hype was seemingly coming from all the right places, but he is extremely entertaining in this film, even more so then I expected.

At times The Cooler has it's share of predictable details I really shouldn't get into here, but I don't think that it's ability to surprise us with some of its twists is what the film sets out to accomplish, although there were some points where I wish they did. We get to understand the reasons why Natalie and Bernie are in love so fast, we understand why Shelly is a sadistic and egotistical power monger (a rarity to see a microscope put on such a villain) and Macy under plays his role as an alternative to Baldwin's fiery Shelly...perhaps that is why Shelly sees them as close friends.

The Cooler carries a style that paces the natural humor just enough where it is funny without being a comedy, while also keeping the drama in check enough to really keep you caring at key moments. This film is handled impeccably well by Kramer and even more defined by a bevy of excellent performances. Good story and very rarely slow to even the most impatient viewer. The Cooler is a very good film.

3 out of 5 stars The Cooler is good, but doesn't reach far enough..........2007-04-04

A man, down on all his luck, Macy does a superb job along with notable performances by Bella and Alec Baldwin(who steals the movie in some sense). But is he really a man that never catches a break? As you'll see, things change, but his lows weren't low enough in my opinion to really mark the reversal of his luck, however long it will last. Had he gone through something more dramatic, the impact may have been greater, but then again, this film may only have been trying to tell the story of a basically lonely guy with not much luck, and a sense of magic "bad luck" when it comes to casinos.

A string of good performances, and worth taking a look at if you like a good story of a man down on his luck.
