4 out of 5 stars bluegrass of today.......2007-05-13

I have been a fan of bluegrass since the days of Bill Monroe, Reno & Smiley, Jimmy Martin, etc. . This singer and his music revert back to
what I have always enjoyed not like Allison Krauss, Nickle Creek, Rhonda Vincent etc. I now have 4 of Jas. King's albums and now listen to Bluegrass with a story again.

4 out of 5 stars Each lyric is delivered with very convincing emotion.......2005-03-02

Playing Time - 45:51 -- James King's robust vocals are known for being raw, pure and full of emotion. King also has a clear affinity for sad songs. He plays no guitar on this project, and instead just concentrates on telling his stories. And a sad song like "Echo Mountain" (written by Billy Smith and Mac Elliott) might bring tears to your eyes. There are no rollicking and smoldering extremes on "The Bluegrass Storyteller," but rather messages and musicianship that hold your attention in a different sort of way emphasizing a more subtle bluegrass framework. James renders a ballad, "Jerusalem Tomorrow," with only his vocals, some mournful fiddle and rhythm accompaniment. Two other numbers ("Second Handed Flowers" and "Carroll County Accident") are sung solo; five songs are arranged for duets. This leaner approach to the vocals allows us to stay focused on James King's emotive messages and personal intensity. James delivers each lyric with very convincing emotion.

King's consummate bandmates add a lot to this project. Guitarist/mandolinist Kevin Prater's high baritone on "Echo Mountain" is spine-tingling. Ben Greene's banjo drives "Flowers in the Dell" and "Carroll County Accident." Adam Haynes is blessed with a silky touch on his fiddle bow that allows him to move effortlessly from note to note. Jerry McNeely's bass provides a rock solid foundation, especially on more up-tempo selections like "Saginaw, Michigan." That piece builds to a soaring 3-part chorus with Prater and Greene assisting.

James King has won great acclaim from the bluegrass community for his heartfelt and soulful singing. A vocalist also knows that he must interpret songs with poignancy and character. He draws material from Tom T. Hall, Lefty Frizzell, David Olney, Bob Ferguson, Fred Eaglesmith, Buddy Miller, Carl Jackson and others. With a distinctive country feeling, James Kings' "The Bluegrass Storyteller" tells a baker's dozen of beautiful, life-affirming tales. Lilting melodies and tender sentiments characterize this album which closes with a stirring gospel quartet on "Just as the Sun Went Down." (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Easy Bible Study !!.......2007-04-28

It is great to read the bible on my computer screen while someone else is also reading the text and pronouncing all those tongue twisting words. Just good stuff. These DVDs won't disappoint you.

5 out of 5 stars Very wonderful, NKJV bible on DVD. .......2007-01-25

This is a very nice thing. It aids comprehension, for me, to be able to read the text, while also hearing it. The narrator reads along at a good clip, so you can progress thru a chapter quickly. Using this Ive been thru some books Id been putting off reading for years. Nothing probably replaces diligent study of the verses using a study bible, but for a preview, or review, this is great. It is amazing how it all works so well. I might sugguest you get this one, rather than attempt to buy the NT and OT separately, as initially I ordered only the NewTest by itself, then found the OldTest not available, so I had to order this one to get the OT.

This goes over and beyond. I have two children whom are LD (Learning Disabled) and I got this DVD mainly for them to listen to, Now i can be assured that they are truly learning the word of GOD, becuase they have trouble reading any book, now they talk bible with me, so if anyone has LD children and you want them to learn the word this is a must in any christian library, I LOVE THIS and also with eight kids I can afford this

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing!.......2006-05-19

The New King James Version of the Bible is my favorite version, and Stephen Johnston is the best narrator I have ever listened to. The NKJV is a modern English version of the Bible. Anyone should be able to understand it. I spent almost $200 on a set of 63 Bible CDs once. Those CDs pale in comparison to this DVD collection. This collection is on two DVDs! The Bible is not an easy read, and I am someone who falls asleep if a book does not hold my complete attention. This collection makes reading the Bible easier than ever. You don't just sit and listen to Stephen Johnston read the Bible. There are all kinds of characters in the Bible. Different actors provide their voices to portray those characters! You will listen to one actor provide the voice of Moses, and another actor will provide the voice of Mary. The Bible really comes alive because of those actors. The verses are easy to comprehend because you can read from the on-screen Bible while the narrator quotes each verse. The on-screen Bible is a lot easier for me to read than a regular Bible. There are also photos of Biblical locations. Many of the photos were taken from Israel. I can't imagine how much time and effort went into creating this DVD collection. There are over 70 hours of audio that include sound effects and dramatic music to highlight each reading from a chapter. I have never found one mistake made by the narrator or any of the people involved in this DVD collection. What is the Bible really about? Why do so many people read it? The Bible is about the God who formed the nation of Israel. It's about the creation of man, and the destruction of all life on earth that takes place at the end of time. The Jews became slaves in ancient Egypt. God told them to leave Egypt and settle in the land of Israel. Then, God presented Himself to the Jews as a Man known as Jesus Christ, or the Son of God. That is in the New Testament of the Bible. Many of the Jews did not accept Jesus Christ, and He was crucified by the Romans. Crucifixion wasn't something Jews did to their enemies. The Romans had control of Israel during that time, and they did crucify their enemies. In my opinion, Jesus was crucified by the Romans because His teachings weakened Roman authority. The Jews had a major problem with accepting Jesus Christ as God because He represented idol worship to them. What the Jews don't seem to remember is that God presented Himself to Moses as a burning bush in the book of Exodus. One can easily come to the conclusion that God can present Himself to humans as any form He chooses. God finally chose the body of Jesus Christ as His true form, and anyone that worshiped Jesus Christ was worshiping God. The Jews of today still refuse to worship Jesus Christ because of what they believe. God wanted to be Jesus Christ on earth in order to preach the gospel to that generation of people, and God knew it was necessary to sacrifice Jesus Christ for the good of all people. Anyone that continued to follow Jesus Christ after His death and resurrection was known as a Christian. The Bible reveals every aspect of human nature. Read the Bible if you want to understand human nature. Read the Bible to nourish your soul. Read the Bible to understand God and His plan to save mankind from an eternal death.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny.......2007-03-16

I am complete satisfied with this reproduction. True it is not full size or crafted in authentic leather ... but guess what? (1) I could not afford such, and (2) it does not detract in any way. This edition places in my hands a piece of sacred history I could have never afforded. Contrary to other reviews I find the text straightforward to read (once I remember that a "v" is a "u" and that a "u" is a "v" plus the symbol for "s"). I am grateful for the scriptures. I am grateful to have this piece of history.

5 out of 5 stars Kings James 1611.......2007-03-13

as an episcopalpalian who in the period from 1972-2007, has witnessed the dumbing down of the church's litergy, by the adoption of a BCP(tial services), the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, and tossing of most of the traditional chuch's music; it is most refreshing to do daily devotionals using King James 1611. Chapters are numbered in roman numerals, place names are noted in both greek and hebrew translations, and the introductory section is exceptional reading.

5 out of 5 stars The entire KNJ.......2007-02-20

For many, the King James Version 1611 of the Bible is the only valid Bible. Interestingly enough, though, most KJV Bibles printed today are not the KJV of 1611, but variations of it: different spellings, some punctuation changes, different words, and most notably, without the Apochrypha. This edition is the real thing: complete, unabridged, no translation changes, and in a sturdy, handy format, and not expensive.

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail.......2007-01-04

I have known for years that the original King James Version differed from the current version with its standardized spellings adopted in 1769. The precise wording has been edited mildly through several revisions and to finally have a REAL King James version from 1611 in my hand is just a thrill. As an history buff in general and a church history buff in particular I have to say that this is the Holy Grail of English Bibles.

Beware: The classic (and inconsistent) spellings are not easy for most to get used to. For most this will be a coffee table Bible, but if you're comfortable reading late Middle English or early Modern English works, this will be readily readable.

It very quickly became my absolute favorite Bible and I use it daily! This is wonderful when combined with Rite One of the 1979 or the 1928 Book of Common Prayer or other forms of "liturgical" English prayer books and liturgies. I highly recommend this one for the KJV enthusiast, the Bible collector and the Bible reader alike.

5 out of 5 stars Do-Gooder Coming Of Age.......2007-06-22

Forget your expectations. What this film provides is an haunting example of the contrast between one young man's idealistic expectations, verses the harsh reality of how political power is sometimes achieved and maintained. We see a recent Scottish medical school graduate flee what he thinks is an oppressive father due to his high expectations, only to land himself a position as the personal physician to a dictator in Uganda: the face of true oppression. As the lighthearted main character is naive to the regime's workings, we viewers are likewise spared much of the gore until the last portion of the film wherein the main character finally takes off his adolescent blinders and opens his eyes to what has been happening around him all along, and how his naivety made him vulnerable to being used as a pawn by the evil regime. This film is for adults only due to sex and violence.

5 out of 5 stars Good movie, great extra's, good price........2007-06-21

I didnt get to watch this in the cinema when it came out, but when i saw it was available on here for $21 I pretty much went for it. Now its on a reduced price ($16 when this review was written)) which still makes it cheaper then buying it in the shops here with a lot more to offer. I say if you have held off buying it, now is a good time to buy cause its quite honestly, that good.

I like how the extra's in the DVD provide a documentary into the life of Idi Amin with reference to the movie and its development. Its good that they went through the pains of actually portraying him a little bit closer to the mark then the western media had portrayed him (that he was, for quite some time really liked by his people) I believe the movie also caputured that quality about him, only to show his demise into the savage murderer that he became.

All things aside I really liked this movie and it makes a great addition to my collection of movies. Definatly worth the buy if you can handle the emotional/grotesque imagery and fancy having an evening in with an exceptional movie.

4 out of 5 stars powerful portrait of a mad ruler..........2007-06-19

Dr. Garrigan(James McAvoy) graduates from medical school and heads to Uganda to escape his overbearing father and fullfill his idealistic dreams of helping the poor. Through his eyes we see a nation in the grip of a military takeover under the powerful and mad despot Idi Amin. Forest Whitaker gives a stunning, mesmerizing performance. When Dr. Garrigan witnesses then helps Idi Amin after a car accident, Idi Amin is taken by the young doctor and offers him a job as his personal physician. Against his better judgement and against the advice of some more world weary Brits, Dr. Garrigan is taken in by the affable and personable dictator. Much like the nation is until the dark side of the man is revealed. In an incredible scene when he is first presented Forest Whitaker shows the persona, the danger and the monster of Idi Amin. You know this is road to danger but you can't help but follow the powerful story. Dr. Garrigan's naivety is sometimes unbelievable but this movie is wonderfully shot, told and written.

5 out of 5 stars You Take The Low Road And I'll Take The Low Road.......2007-06-18

What you notice most about The Last King Of Scotland is excellent cinematography, the recreation of Uganda in the 1970's is lovingly crafted and convincing, from the interior decor to the music to the colorful clothing and culture clash of western influence with African traditions. Director Kevin Macdonald does what only great directors can; he takes you to another place and time and lets you inhabit it.

Watching the film I was reminded of Caligula, whose descent into madness bathed Rome in blood and cruelty. But Caligula was never charming. The first half of this movie shows a charismatic Idi Amin, larger than life, riding high on the love of his people. (This was before he slaughtered 300,000 of his countrymen and fed his ex-wives to crocodiles.) We are swept up into his force of personality just as our protagonist, Dr. Nicholas Garrigan, is swept up in it. That works, although it must be pointed out that despite a terrific performance by James McAvoy as Garrigan, he is dreadfully miscast. Despite all that happens to him, he never looks older than 19, which compounds his already maddening innocence. Next to Amin, Whitaker, he looks 12.

Whitaker's performance has been justifiably praised; it's a performance of a lifetime for him. However, that sleepy eye of his is really getting tiresome, especially when playing a historical figure whose face is well known. Also, there is a weight to Whitaker's persona that is distracting, one gets the sense that he is so profoundly miserable, nothing could ever make him even slightly happy. This gloom is highly evident in interviews. Though he is clearly of the "method" school, this ponderous quality does make it difficult for him to disappear into parts, often he wears them.

One quick aside regarding Gillian Anderson who plays Sarah, wife of Dr. David Merritt. Ever noticed that when Brits venture forth into the most God-forsaken remains of the empire to live on beetles and grubs and do good in a general sort of way for no particular reason, they invariably look like ex-runway models? Ms. Anderson is breathtaking, and the alleged romantic encounter with Dr. Garrigan, still shaving with a rubber razor, is beyond ludicrous.

The film concerns two men, Amin and Garrigan, both losing their souls in parallel. Garrigan is a clueless twit high on a sense of adventure. Amin is more duplicitous, and as Garrigan grows foul with corruption, Amin grows horrific in his madness. The most memorable exchange of the movie comes when Garrigan tells Amin that he is a child, and that is why he is so terrifying. That's quite true. On the world stage, Amin was always a joke, a sort of revolting, embarrassing joke that made you ashamed to be a human being. Director Macdonald took on a hard topic with The Last King Of Scotland, and he truly did it justice. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2007-06-18

Movies like this make me want to never watch movies again. A disgusting look inside the worst of people. The director speaks to base, gruesome sensibilities. He must think his viewers are stupid.

The third Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway hit to go before the cameras, The King and I boasts a career-making performance from Yul Brynner, repeating his stage triumph as the titular monarch and proving to moviegoers that bald can be beautiful. It's Brynner's proud king that provides the fulcrum to the plot, and it's Brynner himself, with his piercing gaze and graceful physicality, that demands our attention.

The story line, adapted from an earlier, nonmusical stage hit, follows widowed English teacher Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr) to her new posting as tutor to the Siamese king's formidable mob of children. The collision of East and West affords its winning mixture of drama and humor, and the warm friendship that grows between the king and the patrician teacher provides a poignant, unfulfilled romance between the two wary protagonists. Into this framework, the composers insert a superb score, echoing Asian motifs, as well as a bouquet of lovely songs including "Hello, Young Lovers," "Shall We Dance," and two ensemble pieces for Anna and the royal children ("Getting to Know You" and "I Whistle a Happy Tune") that suggest prototypes for Rodgers & Hammerstein's later hit, The Sound of Music.

For this 1956 production, 20th Century Fox lavished stereophonic sound, widescreen cinematography, intricate production design, and stunning sets. Technically, this newly mastered THX version is the best-looking and -sounding King yet to hit video. But, regardless of format, the glorious music is reason enough to hit "play." --Sam Sutherland

4 out of 5 stars Shall We THINK...?.......2007-06-20

It's been decades since I was in high school, but I still remember being taken aback by the fact that the script for THE KING AND I was included in my junior year English Lit Anthology. As it happens, it was never actually assigned, but I remember being utterly baffled by its inclusion (could a Broadway musical merit inclusion among more serious works of literature?) and at least skimmed through it at the time. Somehow the notion of members of the Siamese court staging a stylized production of UNCLE TOM'S CABIN just seemed too weird--or maybe just not weird enough-- for my adolescent brain. Looking back, I'm not sure why I didn't find that kind of cross-cultural meld more interesting. But it WAS 1968, and ANY Broadway musical (with the possible exception of the then-current HAIR) would have been way too ESTABLISHMENT for my emerging, uh, countercultural tastes.

But giving it the once over, I had to admit that the text embraced at least it one or two serious IDEAS. So maybe it was worthy of inclusion in the anthology. (And, hey, the rest of the book's selections weren't all literary masterpieces either.) Of course, a few years later--or maybe several years later--I would prove to be much more receptive to a work like THE KING AND I. In fact, oddly enough, a few years BEFORE I probably would have embraced it more eagerly too. In my late childhood, early adolescent stage I was just precocious enough that almost ANYTHING that seemed to smack of grown up sophistication would have appealed to me.

So maybe age 16 was just the wrong age to encounter THE KING AND I--especially in 1968. It probably would come as no surprise to anyone reading this that I have seen the film several times as an adult and appreciate it more each time that I do. It does succeed as sheer entertainment and spectacle of course. The "Shall We Dance?" sequence alone is worth the price of admission (or the price of rental or purchase for home view). Visually, that scene--like so much else in the movie--is just gorgeous.

And it's really only been in the past few years that I have come to appreciate the "Little House of Uncle Thomas" production for the masterpiece of interpretive dance that it is.

It may also come as something of a surprise to viewers my age (and younger) just how many of the Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes from the show were musical staples on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW or were radio hits of the day. Aside from the above mentioned "Shall We Dance?" the show also gave rise to such classics as "Whistle A Happy Tune" and "Hello Young Lovers" and the perhaps somewhat lesser known "Something Wonderful." And musically, they really are something wonderful at that. (And yes, I know that that would have been the last thing I would have owned up to at 16.)

Of course, with all that nourishment for the eye and the ear, did it really need much intellectual heft--or even enough of a message to warrant being included in a high school anthology. Well, there are those who would argue that even the most escapist genres in the popular arts still have a social or cultural subtext. And Broadway musicals are certainly no exception to the rule, even in the B.S. era (that is to say, "Before Sondheim"). While no one would look to even the most sophisticated musical for genuine insight into the human condition, they can address important themes as well as or better than other popular arts.

THE KING AND I at least touches upon such important themes as: justice; classism; imperialism; feudalism; cross-cultural influence; the relation of the sexes; the nature of true nobility; intellectual striving...the list goes on and on. Had I been open to it as a teenager, it certainly could have provided me with ideas enough to chew over--certainly as many as most of the other selections in that literary anthology. And had the soundtrack been available to me as well, it would have certainly provided me with a more than a few moments of musical (guilty?) pleasure even then.

    Certainly, I appreciate it now!

    5 out of 5 stars a great, classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical.............2007-05-18

THE KING AND I was one of my earlier introductions to the great body of work, from the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. This film showcases Deborah Kerr, as Anna Leonowens (with the singing voice of Marni Nixon--the "ghost singer" for many Hollywood starlets) and Yul Brynner, as the King of Siam, at his bald-headed best. This is the musical remake of ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM, made in 1946, starring Irene Dunne (as Anna Leonowens) and Yul Brynner (as The King of Siam).

THE KING AND I brings important social issues, as relevant in 1862 (the year that the story is set) as they are today. Though, dated in nature, this wonderfully engrossing tale examines racism, sexism and misogyny, as experienced through the eyes of British governess Anna Leonowens, who arrives in Siam (now Thailand) to teach the king's brood of children about history and valuable life lessons. One of the most well-known songs from this film is "Getting To Know You," a sweet, upbeat song, where Anna teaches the children to be more open-minded toward people outside of what is comfortable and familiar to them. I think that best illustrates Leonowens' view of the world, and how it vastly contrasts from the views more commonly voiced in the castle of the king. For starters, The King has many, many, many wives. This includes a beautiful new wife, the young Tuptim (Rita Moreno), who is secretly in love with another man--a forbidden romance. The king keeps wives like he would livestock, and Anna is appalled by this common custom. She sets out to break down the kings' machisimo. But, will she succeed?

Some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard from Rodgers and Hammerstein. The songs include "We Kiss In the Shadow," "Shall We Dance" (made famous by the wonderful dancing sequence, involving Deborah Kerr in a beautiful purple gown, shasaying with an enthusiastic king), and "I Have Dreamed." This film is beautifully acted, marvelously directed, and greatly engaging.

5 out of 5 stars The King And I.......2007-05-13

This movie is not only a classic but will haunt your memory with it's music and characters. Shall We Dance rings not in only your ears but your heart as you watch this sophisticated English teacher become beguiled with the awsome persona of a real live pagan king, bare feet and all. I normally do not like sad endings but this one I tollerated because of the enormous empact the story line had on me. Your service in bringing the best movies to the public is very much appreciated by this buyer.Thank you again, Patricia A. Adams

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLANT.......2007-05-10

this was a gift to a person that 'The King & I' is their most favorite of all times. They enjoyed this immensely, especially the 'extra' scenes that were included

5 out of 5 stars King sized entertainment!.......2007-05-06

What more can I say about this gem from 1956. The music from this classic still makes you want to hum after you watch it! I am amazed each time I watch the dance scene with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr! Excellent entertainment for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars best one yet.......2002-07-19

As one of the biggest artists in bluesgrass today, James King comes back with a hit again. The title track, "Thirty years of Farming" happens to be my favorite. This album is his best yet and i hope there is more to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Thirty Years of Farming........2002-05-08

I heard James King on the radio and had to have the CD. I'm not usually a fan of Bluegrass but I really enjoy this music. Buy it, you'll like it.

    5 out of 5 stars TRUE BLUEGRASS.......2002-05-07

James King has THE voice in Bluegrass, today. This particular CD absolutely supercedes and surpasses not only his previous solo efforts, but also his collaborations with the supergroup "Longview", which is no small feat!!! If anyone you know has ever owned a farm, you'll break down to the title cut. Play this endlessly, and cry, dance, and laugh yourself into exhaustion! (Then go out and see him live in concert!!)

5 out of 5 stars Another Solid Effort From James King.......2002-03-04

Very strong album from James King. Wonderful selection of songs. King has one of the best voices in bluegrass and his band is very tight. Highly recommended.

        Amazon.com Review

King James silverware regally complements a formal china pattern, especially one with platinum trim. Oneida constructs the flatware of sturdy brass, then plates it with gleaming, timeless silver. The classic acanthus leaf design, a favorite symbol in the art and architecture of ancient Greece, adorns the pointed tip of each flared handle, which also shows a subtle ridge up the center and a raised outline and neck detail. The dinner fork tines are especially long and graceful, and the dessert/salad fork features decorative notches between tines as well as a scalloped bottom edge. Special events require special tableware, and King James handsomely fits the bill.

An excellent wedding gift or upgrade from a daily stainless-steel pattern, this 46-piece set of King James includes eight place settings, a five-piece hostess set, and a wooden storage chest. Each place setting includes a dinner knife, dinner fork, salad fork, soup spoon, and teaspoon. The hostess set consists of a large serving spoon, pierced serving spoon, serving fork, gravy or sauce ladle, and a butter knife. After the festivities are over, the flatware pieces can go right into the dishwasher, although washing good silver by hand is always recommended. Oneida covers the silver-plated flatware with a lifetime warranty against defects, and will refinish or replace any damaged piece that meets with its criteria. --Ann Bieri
