Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06
The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.
As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.
However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.
But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.
My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.
Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

SPECIAL BEETHOVEN..........2006-08-28
This is a special realization, and no mistake!
We're so used to hearing the Kreisler cadenzas in Beethoven's Violin Concerto, that Schneiderhan's reworking of Beethoven's adaptation for piano strikes us as stunning.
This is an unusual thing: Beethoven prepared a piano version for his unique Violin Concerto. The piano version has never appealed to me because the piece is so essentially violinistic. Now, since Beethoven did not write the cadenzas for the violin version--he did, however, write the piano version out--Schneiderhan has re-adapted the piano version for violin usage.
How does it work out? Odd--but it does work! And I think the oddness could disappear with familiarity--as we leave the Kreisler version aside.
Amazing Beethoven; Slightly Less Amazing Mozart.......2005-10-28
This is _the_ best recording of the Beethoven Violin concerto that I've heard out of the seven recordings I own, and the numerous versions I've heard. If you do not own a copy of this concerto, you should get this one first, as it is simply amazing. Although I prefer other cadenzas to the one Schneiderhan has chosen, he still plays it wonderfully. If you do not wish to get this recording, then a close second to this Beethoven would be the Francescatti/Walter disk.
As for the Mozart, Schneiderhan's sound production doesn't equal what he did in the Beethoven. If you're buying the CD for the Mozart, I highly suggest otherwise. The Grumiaux recording of this has pretty much been considered the baseline standard for all other recordings. Personally, I'm a fan of the Perlman recording as well as the Stern.
Overall, this CD is amazing for its Beethoven concerto, with an acceptable Mozart. Although the Beethoven is top-class, better recordings of the Mozart can be found.
Great, but Furtwangler owns the Beethoven.......2005-09-28
This is a fantastic performance of the Beethoven concerto. Schneiderhan brings a full share of Viennese grace and passion to the table and his tone is lovely. Jochum conducts very well. However, Jochum is not Furtwangler, which in this case is necessarily a bad thing. The things Furtwangler brought out of this piece I doubt will ever be heard again, because they were parts of his very soul. And how beautiful they were too, flowing and ebbing in perfect proportion. As for the Mozart, this is the best performance I've heard, and I've heard Grumieaux, Spivakov, Mutter, and Perlman. Jochum sounds suspicously like he owned the Mozart 5, though I haven't heard the usual suspects, namely Bohm and Krips, not to mention Furtwangler himself. So here's what I urge you to do: buy this CD along with the 2 widely available versions of the Furtwangler-Menuhin collaboration (the EMI version for the Philharmonia orchestra; the Testament version to hear Furtwangler in his glorious prime, with an unshakable command of the orchestra and Menuhin on a good day to boot). You will love the Schneiderhan-Jochum performance; you will weep before Furtwangler and Menuhin.
Almost great........2004-06-05
I'm rather divided on this release. Many people I know claim that this recording is by far the finest performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto ever recorded and in many ways it is without equal. From the opening bars the solid foundation provided by Jochum's players provides a perfect platform for Schneiderhan to work his magic and be in no doubt his performance is magical, tight and disciplined, passionate and expressive while also being completely secure and confident in both his playing and his interpretation, there's much to like here.
What bothers me though is that Schneiderhan choose to use his own cadenza's based on Beethoven's piano transcription of the Violin Concerto. These cadenzas are very rarely played. In fact off hand I can't think of a single other major artist who has recorded them and with good reason, while they certainly do explore the extreme's of what is possible within the constrictions of the musical structure, for me they represent a rather disjointed and needlessly ostentatious passage. I would not say that this is virtuosity for its own sake, but at times it comes rather close and in my opinion detracts from the magnificence of both Beethoven's score and Schneiderhan's playing.
I suppose that if I was asked to choose I would say that I prefer Schneiderhan's earlier mono recording with Paul Van Kempen, where I believe he uses the Kreisler cadenzas to great effect. But as I listened what I found myself truly missing was the depth, passion, control and the almost stentorian grandeur of Iona Brown's late 1960's recording on the Argo label recording with Willi Boskovsky. Now sadly no longer available, my LP pressing is much loved and often enjoyed and I urge any one looking for the finest recording of this magnificent concerto to seek out a copy either of the original LP or the digitally re-mastered CD of the late 1980's.
The Mozart however I can recommend without any hesitation whatsoever. The magnificence of the playing in the Beethoven concerto is replicated here in a performance that I prefer to any other that I've heard.
Yet despite my misgivings I can't say that I didn't enjoy this CD, the playing is magnificent and there is a true depth of feeling for both pieces, but in my opinion those cadenzas rather spoil the whole.
I prefer the Kreisler cadenza, but still a good performance.......2002-03-30
What I liked about the Beethoven is the way the orchestra under Jochum's direction has more than just a secondary role. The parts where the soloist is not playing do not just sound like background interludes, but take on a more integral part of the work. Schneiderhan plays with a beautiful tone throughout, and shares Jochum's concept of the music.
However, I do not care for the cadenza Schneiderhan uses. I tried very hard to listen with an open mind, and at first I found the changes to be refreshingly different. But before long, they became distracting and disrupted the flow of the music. So for me, this recording will not displace Menuhin/Furtwangler, Francescatti/Walter, or Heifetz/Munch. Still, it's worth hearing as an alternate version, and the recorded sound is outstanding, easily surpassing any of the three recordings mentioned above.

Disappointing.......2007-03-09
Very sluggish! Very disappointing! How can one turn passionate music into boring? Well, IMHO, Mutter did just that.
Passionate and singing, outstanding violin playing.......2003-11-15
Ms. Mutter makes the violin sing in this fine collection of violin concertos recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic. Ms. Mutter was discovered by Herbert von Karajan at age 13, declared by him as "the greatest musical prodigy since the young Menuhin" and played with the Berlin Philharmonic as a teenager. The two Mozart concertos were recorded when she was only 15. The other concertos were recorded before she was twenty years old. My favorite is the Mendelssohn concerto. Ms. Mutter plays its haunting theme with elegance, flair and fire. Her passion and precision are evident through the difficult passages. Married to conductor Andre Previn, who wrote a violin concerto for her, Ms. Mutter never fails to intrigue her audience, making her vioin sing with colorful, soulful voices.
Excellent Set of Mutter, Karajan and Berlin Philharmonic.......2001-12-24
Deutsche Grammophon has assembled the recordings made by violinist Mutter, conductor Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic back in the 1970's and early 1980's when Mutter was a teenage prodigy on the violin. The finest performances are those of the Beethoven and Brahms concertos, but the others are fine too, especially the Mozart concertos. Sound quality purists may prefer remastered versions of the Beethoven violin concerto - available as part of Deutsche Grammophon's complete Beethoven commemorative edition and the others which are available separately on Deutsche Grammophon's legendary recordings series. Yet those who prefer having all these performances in one box set won't be disappointed with the sound quality.
A wonderful 4 disc set.......2000-12-13
To know that Anne-Sophie was just a teen when these recordings were made...15 to 19 years of age...is truly astonishing. She plays with a virtuosity well beyong her years. As the booklet states, Karajan has referred to her as "the most outstanding musical prodigy since the young Menuhin"; as anyone can tell by listening to this set, this is an apt title for her. I am no expert when it comes to Classical music, so I won't attempt to compare or analyze or go into the set deeply; but I certainly know something beautiful when I hear it, and this set of 4 cds is certainly that. Recommended!
Great collection of great concertos.......2000-01-16
Anne-Sophie Mutter is one of the finest violinists of our time. Her tone is powerful and sensitive, and her technique is superb. Like the title suggests, these are some of the greatest concertos written for violin; Mutter plays these masterpieces with her own distinct style and musicality.

Incredible performance and transfer!.......2003-10-09
For my taste, there are four supreme recordings of the Beethoven Violin Concerto: Menuhin/Furtwaengler, Kreisler/Blech, Hubermann/Szell, and perhaps the greatest of all, Szigeti/Walter. This is the famous 1932 performance which caught both artists at their peak, in a wonderfully natural and rich sounding transfer. Szigeti is more intense and forceful in the outer movements and more ethereal and elevated in the Largo than than other violinists, all with a lean, unsensuous tone that reveals the music rather than submerging it in tonal perfume. As mentioned, the transfer is extremely good and has all the impact of a pristine copy of the 78 originals.

25 Classical Heartbreakers.......2006-11-29
Although these are popular and widely heard compositions (that's why I gave it 4 stars) they are very soothing when you want to mellow out. However, I can't understand why the title reads '20 Classical Heartbreakers' when there are 25 pieces.

A Very Pleasurable Mix.......2005-10-29
I still consider myself a rock music fan, but received this CD/album as a Christmas gift in 1995, and have listened to it in my car countless times. It contains a very nice assortment of familiar arrangements performed brillantly by various orchestras. Even if the title doesn't ring a bell, chances are you've heard these songs before and can connect with them. My wife's favorite is "Canon" (she's a diehard romantic) and I'm partial to "Fanfare" (Masterpiece Theater's old theme). Guaranteed to mellow you out while stuck in rush-hour traffic.
Good for beginners........1999-01-16
For those of us who think we would like classical music but have no idea where to start or what to buy, this is a good CD. I now have a small classical music library which gives me a great deal of pleasure, but this was one of my first selections. I still enjoy it. I recommend it to friends who are beginning to enjoy classical music and need a place to start.

An unbelievable Bruch.......2005-03-03
This Mischa Elman's violin concertos album deserve being bought and listened for the pure sake of his two Bruch concertos performances.
The magnificent musical ideas of Elman render the overplayed Bruch n.1 and the seldom played Bruch n.2 the most captivating performance we can imagine, as if they were two concertos never listened before!
The recordings remount back to 1956, with Adrian Boult and London Philharmonic,Anatole Fistoulari and London Symphony respectively.
Compared to Elman's rendition, the various glorified Heifetz,Ferras,Accardo and so on give only a faint interpretation of what this wonderful romantic violin music should sound.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Pieces to listen too!.......2005-11-19
Mozart's clarinet concerto (Collins) certainly sounds better than Pay's "sticky key-pad" performance. The Beethoven violin concerto transcribed for clarinet sounds warm, relaxed and right at home. The violin concerto had to be rewritten slightly to allow Michael Collins to breathe while playing this piece! I believe Gramophone recommended this CD for the Mozart clarinet concerto. You know something, they were right......
Sounds good to me.......2005-11-01
Well, I'm a clarinetist, so I simply must give this five stars.
The Mozart clarinet concerto is well-played, but not all that special. Yes, it is on a basset clarinet, and I consider that essential. But there are other good recordings, such as by the very artistic Sabine Meyer, or by Antony Pay, or Joan Enric Lluna, or David Shifrin, or Thea King, or my favorite, Charles Neidich.
And yes, there are some options about just which notes ought to be lowered when the concerto is played on the basset clarinet. I think this is not a big issue.
Anyway, we all know why we are getting this album. It's for the Beethoven violin concerto, played on a clarinet, with great cadenzas by Pletnev. It is not an easy piece. In the first movement, one occasionally has to omit notes just to breathe.
I like it. I think clarinetists need to try playing concertos written for other instruments.
Great CD. Fun transcription.......2005-05-26
This is a wonderful recording that everyone should hear! I've only heard 2 recordings of Michael Collins, but from what I've heard so far, he has a really great sound (dark and centered, very clear) and excellent technique.
Collin's Mozart is well done, though he doesn't really "break any new ground" (of course, the piece is so well known and widely recorded that there isn't really anything new he could have done, even if he tried). The only thing that annoys me is that there is a certain spot in the central section of the middle movement where Collins (who is playing a basset clarinet) plays a passage in the range normally employed by the A clarinet. I realize this is a minor detail, but the thing I like best about the piece on basset is that in the slow movement, there passages in the middle section right before the return of the original melody which are normally changed for the A clarinet, but are much better when played in what is supposedly the original range on basset. This is the part I look forward to when listening to the slow movement. I was a little disappointed to hear that he left one of the passages in the altered state, although his instrument could play the lower notes... However, this is just a reflection of my personal tastes, and not any shortcoming on Collin's part.
The Beethoven is wonderful, and Collins does a great job. The only problem I find (and this is entirely my own problem) is that since the piece is 1) a HUGE piece in the violin repertoire that I am very familar with and 2) very difficult and contains some passages that are entirely out of character for the clarinet (such as passage where breathing is almost impossible, or awkward technical things) I am constantly aware that the piece is NOT a clarinet concerto, which is somewhat distracting. Collins pulls off the harder spots very well, and they sound good. I just can't help thinking about the technical aspects of the transcription, rather than just sitting back and enjoying the music. However, as I said, this is just me being unable to turn off that nagging voice in my head and just enjoy (I think that this would be much less of an issue if you didn't know the violin version so well).
Overall, this is a great CD. Collin's Mozart could probably stand up to any other version on the market (although Antony Pay's is my personal favorite). The Beethoven is an ambitious undertaking, and I think it is entirely successful (both from a musical and technical standpoint). Enjoy!
Treasured CD.......2005-05-15
I have many recordings of Mozart's sublime Clarinet Concerto, and they're all wonderful. This reading by British clarinetist Michael Collins, accompanied by the Russian National Orchestra conducted by Mikhail Pletnev, is one of my favorites. Mr. Collins performs the concerto on a modern Basset clarinet which extends the instrument's range downward several notes. Mozart wrote his concerto for the Basset clarinet, and it really makes quite a difference when hearing those marvelous arpeggios runs taken from the lower-most regions of the instrument's range. Michael Collin's plays the concerto with tremendous feeling, and demonstrates a flawless technique. Kudos go to the Russian National Orchestra as well for their beautiful and spirited accompaniment.
The other work on this CD is an arrangement of Beethoven's Violin concerto (by conductor Mikhail Pletnev) transcribed for clarinet. To my knowledge this is the only recording available of the clarinet arrangement, which makes this CD even more treasured. Needless-to-say, in the hands of Michael Collins it's outstanding in every way. BTW, there is also an equally outstanding piano arrangement of Beethoven's Violin concerto on Naxos (#8554288) coupled with his Triple concerto. Beethoven's Violin concerto has been served well in many forms. Highly recommended CD!!!!
Superlative performances of these sublime works.......2002-11-23
Forget any reservations you may have regarding the transcription of Beethoven's masterpiece - it is truly wonderful, sounding both lyrical and beautiful on the clarinet. Michael Collins performs the definitive Mozart Clarinet Concerto. This is simply the greatest reading of this work that I have ever heard. If you only buy one cd in this lifetime, this has to be the one!
