This is a misnomer--not all of these duets are all that famous--but it's a fine compilation nonetheless. You'll hear selections from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers (Nicolai Gedda and Ernest Blanc at their most elegant French), Madama Butterfly (Carlo Bergonzi and Renata Scotto--an impassioned pair), Lucia di Lammermoor (a classy Alfredo Kraus and Edita Gruberova), the lovely Lakme duet, The Presentation of the Silver Rose from Der Rosenkavalier (with the earnest Christa Ludwig and the other-worldly Teresa Stich-Randall), and a fine Trovatore "Miserere" (with Leontyne Price and Franco Bonisolli singing up a storm). There are many others, too--a veritable cornucopia of couplings--and a treat for the opera lover. --Robert Levine

Most Famous???.......2007-05-14

The title of this cd is misleading and I found myself wondering whose list did they use. That is not to say that there aren't some real treasures included here. The duet from Lakme is lovely in every way, Mady Mesple in particular, very beautful and very french, and far superior to Sutherlands hooty approach. Scotto and Bergonzi are superb, the Tristan and Isolde of Vickers and Dernesch truly other worldly, and the presentation of the rose duet with the young Ludwig and the astonishing Teresa Stich- Randell had me playing it over and over and I still can't believe it, but the most famous??? This cd is definitly worth buying, and I hated giving it only 3 stars but if you're talking most famous you could fill a couple of cd's with Puccini, not to mention Verdi, Mozart, etc. before Bizet's Les Pecheurs des perles, beautiful as it is, made the most famous list.

Super performances by famous opera artists of the 20th century, most of them no longer performing and some of them deceased. I enjoy having their voices available at home.

This is a marvelous CD, especially the Pearl Fisher's duet with Gedda and Blanc. I would rank that performance second all time, just below the
forever unforgettable Bjoerling/Merrill version. Worth the price just for that selection, and all the rest is top rate as well.

Actually, its more Mad About Placido Domingo.......2001-09-15

"Mad About Italian Opera" is really more like "Mad About Placido Domingo" since 11 of the 19 tracks feature the tenor. Another three offer vocals by Luciano Pavarotti, so obvious the emphasis is on tenors with this collection. Yes, there is the "Anvil Chorus" from Il Travatore and the "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves" from Nabucco, but the vast majority of tracks are tenor solos (e.g., "Il barbiere di Siviglia" from The Barber of Seville) or tenors engaged in operatic duels with sopranos (e.g., "Ah! Verrano a te sull'aure" from Lucia di Lammermoor), with a few soprano solo arias (e.g., "Vissi d'arte" from Tosca) tossed in for good measure, but you will not find a superstar soprano on this disc. However, you do get to hear Domingo sing Pavarotti's traditional encore piece, "Nessun dorma!" from Turandot, which is the best proof that this collection is a show case for that particular tenor.

I really am Mad About Italian Opera.......2001-09-13

If you don't have any experience with opera, or if you have had opera experience and hated it, this is the CD for you. I had some experience with opera, but I rarely listened to it voluntarily, until I got this CD. It has the most famous and consequently most beautiful arias ever written for opera, and you get the benefit of listening to the most famous singers in the world, unlike other CDs you can get for this price. It is a wonderful investment, and can make even the most die hard opera opponents gain appreciation for the genre because of its caliber.

Perfect collection for Opera "curious".......2002-07-28

It is an unfortunate side effect of modern life that the traditional sources of a classical education are disappearing. Because many classical music radio stations have transformed into yet another commercial outlet of top 40 pap, access to classical music for the general public is generally limited to movies or television in the form of background music. These sources rarely credit their music, so most people are left wondering what is was they heard and enjoyed.

I am known to enjoy classical music and my friends often ask me for listening suggestions.(What is wrong with the public schools? They should be teaching this.) Normally, I shy away from collections like "Adagios" or "The Art of Herbert von Karajan" as they generally show little thought in their organization. I do enjoy and would recommend this disk "Opera Made Easy", which I discovered...one afternoon.

Opera is the most imposing of the classics for the novice. The usual [$$]to [$$]price tag of a double or triple CD can be intimidating when embarking into unknown territory.

This collection contains many favorites from Italian Opera: Donizetti, Mozart, Verdi, and Puccini to name the largest contributors. Many are familiar to even the novice, like the Toreador Chorus from Bizet's Carmen. Some are found in today's television commercials, like Leo Delibes' Flower Duet. There are a couple of show stoppers here: Puccini's Nessun Dorma, performed by a Pavarotti in his prime and Robert Merrill's poignant performance of the Pagliacci Si puo? And who can resist the bubbly quartet Bella filiglia del'Amore from Rigoletto which is sung in style by Pavarotti, Sherill Milnes, Joan Sutherland, and Hugette Tourangeau.

The favorites are here.......2000-06-19

Well, this is a great introduction to the world of opera for those who are opera novitiates, there's no question there. And they are certainly some of the most popular arias and duets from a large sampling of operas as one may be able to tell. However, there are some not so great renditions of the arias and duets on here. But most of the selections are fairly well done to quite exquisite.

The first CD contains just opera arias. I will make note of certain selections, and the rest you can consider to be of pretty good quality. The first track, "Gualtier Maldé... Caro nome" is wonderfully done by Anna Moffo, even though her high E ending is not quite in keeping with the style of the period, yet still quite nice to hear. Edita Gruberova's version of "Ah! Je veux vivre" is just ghastly. This coloratura soprano goes awry here and sounds as though she was drunk when recording this piece. My advice is to try to skip this track altogether unless you like to hear wobbling all over the place and screaming instead of beautiful high notes. This is probably my biggest criticism of this CD set, due to the fact that there are much better versions, especially the one by Joan Sutherland (the prima donna who was the master of coloratura in her time). Edita does go on to spur a bit of hope that she can do coloratura in the famous Bell song from Lakmé. She shows some wonderful skills with beautifully high pianissimos and scale work, but it falls apart once she gets to the real heavy-duty coloratura part near the end, and is off pitch in places, especially on her final shrieked note which is almost painful. And as for her "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" from the Magic Flute, it's so-so in comparison to versions that Sumi Jo, Christina Deutekom, and Lucia Popp have done. Now there's some coloratura sopranos for you. So now you see why I had to at least knock down my rating of this CD a little bit.

When looking at the second CD, for the opera duets, this one is generally much better than the first CD. However, there are some pretty old recordings on here, namely the "Un di, felice, eterea" and "Parle-moi de ma mère" that sound kind of hollow and tin-like. The rest of the recordings are pretty much around the same age or older and these performers sound quite good. I especially like the tracks "Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen" with Popp and Brendel (note: Lucia Popp has done both the roles of the Queen of the Night and Pamina. I highly recommend these two different versions of the opera the Magic Flute if this track whets your appetite for more), and "È il sol dell'anima" with Reri Grist's wonderful clear soprano voice. Probably the highlight of this CD set though is the beautiful "Presentation of the Rose" duet from Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier. This just sends chills through the spine every time with its hauntingly beautiful harmonies.

Beyond all description..........2006-09-19

As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.

An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09

...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.

This Pavarotti set; The Pavarotti Edition; is a wonderful collection of Arias and songs that cover Luciano's great career. Pavarotti is THE Voice of the 20th Century and this set does him justice. It includes 10 CDs with over 750 minutes of music; Includes Music from All of His roles; has a beautiful 76 page full color booklet; Has a wonderful write up; and includes a bonus CD of Pavarotti's fist album, a 45, from 1964, which has never been released on CD before this set. Every Song is hear, This SET is a must have for every Pavarotti Fan.

Impressive in places.......2006-11-09

I'm not a Brendel fan. His playing bores me as does his hard-core academic, intellectual, cerebral approach to music. When you're listening to a beautiful melody, do you honestly care whether the performer has researched the original manuscripts in the library of the University of Haden-Baden-Unter-Raden-Kladen? It seems to me that performers who constantly pontificate about the "correct" way to play a piece and the paramount importance of the written note are sort of missing the point and end up turning out lacklustre performances.

So it is in the case of some of the pieces on this CD. La Campanella is technically proficient but utterly uninspiring (compare John Ogdon's recording of it which is full of excitement). But then you do have to take your hat off to some of the performances for their technical brilliance. The Lucia di Lammermoor paraphrase is played magnificently from a technical point of view - great clarity, good tempo, the really difficult left and right hand arpeggios executed perfectly and actually perhaps that is the best way to play this piece. The more "emotional" performances of this piece take liberties with the tempo in order to hide technical weakness. So Brendel does this one justice. He also plays the Norma paraphrase excellently, although this is fundamentally a boring piece. Yes, technically you can't really fault him.

But I still find his playing boring overall. Many people would disagree with me though.

Viva Vaness: Her Greatest Roles On Record.......2005-10-06

This recording showcases soprano Carol Vaness'greatest roles in compelling arias from Donizetti's Anna Bolena, Verdi's Traviata, Otello and Trovatore. The roles of Anna Bolena, Violetta, Desdemona, Lady Macbeth and Leonora (and not featured here- Puccin's Tosca) are doubtless her greatest roles. On stage, Carol Vaness did indeed resemble Maria Callas but she had a powerful and electrifying style all her own which won her fame and critical acclaim worldwide. This recording luckily finds her in her vocal prime. It is now that her voice is losing its radiant lustre. But here, she is captured in glorious voice and technical musical brilliance. She is passionate and raging in the final aria from Donizetti's Anna Bolena "Coppia Iniquia" and this interpretation has echoes of Calla's portrayal. I wholly support the other review on this and other points. Her Violetta from Traviata was apparently met with opposition and challenges. It was a role she sang at the Met but was told was not in her league. Carol Vaness is the most recent example of lyrico-spinto in other words a soprano with a big, juicy voice and dramatic thrust, quite like the vocal range of Leontyne Price, who sang the roles Vaness took on- Tosca, Lady Macbeth and Leonora. It is just as fair to liken Vaness' voice to Leontyne's voice, though of course both sopranos have distinctive differences. Carol Vaness is also a champion of old, rare works. She sang in Albeniz'opera Merlin in a production that is available on DVD. She also sang in Mozart's Idomeneo and in Verdi's obscure opera Arnoldo. Without a doubt, this recording is her all-time best work and any fan should rush to order it. It's highly affordable, too. Cheap, even. And the recording is terrific.

Carol Vaness In All Her Glory: A Great Album For Opera Fans.......2005-05-16

I just bought this recording and I am still blown away, Carol Vaness' voice still echoing in my ears and in my mind. What a sensation she must be to see in person on the stage. I have never had the pleasure. On this recording album, recorded in the 90's, we are treated to great opera in the dramatic and bel canto tradition- Donizetti and Verdi. While Verdi broke away from bel canto later on in his career as composer, he was deeply influenced by the sheer tonal beauty and glory that was to be found in the works of the masters- Bellini and Donizetti. Bel Canto, if sung and performed right, is supremely dramatic. It's a night of absolute drama. This is the case with Donizetti's Ana Bolena, the story of Anne Boylen and her beheading by the infamous Henry the 8th. Carol Vaness sings the finale to this great opera- Anne Boylen's Mad Scene. "Coppia Iniquia", the final aria, is a difficult, taxing dramatic piece for any soprano taking on this role. Maria Callas, as always, is hailed as a fine interpreter of this role, but other singers made the role equally as thrilling through sheer will power and artistry -Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sills. But Vaness! My God, she is on fire, she is raging, she is fighting to live, she is bemoaning he fate in such an incredibly dramatic and vocal manner that it blows you away. She's got a big, rich, full sound with beautiful and even plangent sound. Not surprisingly, Carol Vaness, who looked a bit like Maria Callas (as did Teresa Stratas) sings the heck out of most of the roles Callas performed - Violetta, Lady Macbeth, and Leonora. Lady Macbeth's Mad Scene is a tour de force at the hands, or should I say in the vocal chords, of Miss Vaness. Just listen to the eerie, almost melancholy manner in which she sings "Una Macchia e que tuttora"- she makes the aria sound beautiful and strange, like Lady Macbeth must look as she sleepwalks. And the way she sings the line "maledetta". Just listen to it. It's sheer artistry. She joins the ranks of the great Lady Macbeths that were Callas and Rysanek. As Leonora in Il Trovatore, she is a force of nature and she is easily the equal of Leontyne Price. This album should hook you into opera and of course Carol Vaness.

Vaness in her prime.......2001-12-03

This cd was recorded in the early 1990's, when Carol Vaness was at her prime vocally. The Donizetti selection is Anna Bolena's final "Mad scene." This is the only Donizetti selection in this recording, with the rest being from the operas of Giuseppe Verdi.

Vocally and dramatically, Vaness was in splendid form in this recording, although the legato lines could have been better sustained with a stronger breath support.

The selections from Anna Bolena and Il Trovatore are stunning, with beautiful floated pianissimi and strong top notes. Vaness' darkish soprano (so wonderfully suited to Mozart), was employed intelligently and with great dramatic intensity throughout this cd. Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene is incredible in the way Ms. Vaness employed the darker overtones of her voice to convey the character's madness and emotional unraveling; alas, she did not take the final high D flat, but her singing of this aria is quite breathtaking and a wonderful document of what Ms. Vaness could do at her best. Her singing of the selections from La Traviata is equally wonderful and expressive, especially the scena "E strano." She opted not to take the optional high E flat at the end of "Sempre libera," and her "Willow Song" from Otello is missing some of the floated quality one hears in Tebaldi or Caballe, but other than these minor quibbles, this CD is a must for any fan of Ms. Vaness.

The conducting, from Roberto Abbado, is acceptable, though not exceptional. The chorus in Il Trovatore's "Miserere" is painfully slow, lacking the dramatic intensity of the scene, and the tempi employed in "Sempre libera" were at times a tad too sluggish.

Nonetheless, get this CD (look around the net if you can't find one) if you are a fan of Ms. Vaness, for it is a wonderful souvenir of her artistry.
