Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) who is well known for his Requiem, has a very attractive repertoire for organ. Beside that his works are quite briefs, musical expression is always pleasant to hear.

Two highlights on this CD : the Suite opus 5 (track 1-3) especially in the Toccata, and the Prelude and Fugue on Alain opus 7 (track 12-13). Both better known as concert pieces, for their brightness in style and execution. A very interesting piece, Chant donné - Hommage à Jean Gallon (track 4) is an interesting short and not so well known piece that worth the listening.

Soft registration and expressive play by Friedhelm Flamme make theis CD a sort of tribute to the excellence of composition by Duruflé.

Very accurate recording, choice of repertoire and meticulous execution make togother a summit in recorded organ music.

Exquisite Works, Exquisite Playing on a Beautiful New Organ.......2004-06-25

I am an almost complete neophyte when it comes to the organ music of Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986). I've heard only one of these pieces in recital as far as I can recall; that was 'Prélude et fugue sur le nom d'Alain, Op. 7,' played by Duruflé's widow, Marie-Madeleine Duruflé-Chevalier, toward the end of her life. I later heard it played by the very fine organist at my church. But the other works here are terra incognita for me, although, having sung the 'Requiem' recently, the musical language was in general quite familiar to me. That said, I must try to contain my enthusiasm for having made the discovery of this music. And since I've not heard other recordings or performances, I have nothing to compare them with.

Duruflé wrote slowly and carefully and did not leave very much music. This disc contains ALL of his organ music. One wishes he had written (or preserved) more. The two big pieces here are the early Suite, Op. 5, and the 'Prélude, Adagio et Choral varié sur la thème du "Veni Creator", ' Op. 4. The Toccata in the former, reminding one of Gigout's famous Toccata, and the Choral varié in the latter are particularly memorable, and expertly played by organist Friedhelm Flamme. There are a number of much smaller pieces, most memorable of which are the 'Chant donnée - Hommage à Jean Gallon,' exquisite for its short 1 1/2 minutes, and the previously mentioned Prelude and Fugue on the name of [Jehan] Alain. Characteristic of Duruflé writing is the extremely subtle mix of colors; he was very careful to prescribe registrations and there are certainly some organs that cannot supply the color required. The organ here, a new Mühleisen (of Strasbourg) Organ installed in 2000 at the Stiftkirche in Bad Gandersheim, Lower Saxony, is perfectly suited, it sounds to me, for the delicacy of Duruflé's music.

I wish I could describe the effect Duruflé's style has on me; it is both exquisitely wrought and delicate, and at the same time highly emotional (in that oh-so-French way); it has much the same effect on me that the Ravel of, say, 'L'Enfant et les sortileges' or the Satie of 'Socrate' does. I've been playing this disc in my car and at home for a couple days and can't seem to get enough of it. I have been playing the audio CD layer of this hybrid SACD disc and the sound is exemplary; I can only imagine how it would be in SACD sound.

Strongly recommended.

The need for more exciting organ literature.......2001-06-14

There is no doubt in my mind that D. Higgs is a very capable organist, however I was expecting a bit more from this CD. This mammoth instrument never fails to satisfy because of its size and versatility. However, one fails to perceive the enormous space in which the instrument is situated. The mixture of substantial organ works with those of the more "fluffy" variety did not seem to work. The gradual crescendo to the end of the Bolcom fantasia highlights the vast resources of this instrument all to be crowned by a blare of trumpets with full organ tutti.

Ah, such pretty music. Durufle was one of those French mystical types--full of Gregorian chant-inspired melody. His organ music is thoroughly typical of his small but immaculately crafted output. The Scherzo is a real charmer, while the Prelude and fugue pays affectionate tribute to a talented colleague. His Requiem became so popular that the composer arranged it for every instrumental combination except perhaps kazoo orchestra. This version is the one featuring a big solo organ part (with chamber orchestra), and it's well performed and recorded. Piquemal's vocal ensemble isn't the last word in polish, but they sing with enthusiasm and fans of the composer need not hesitate. --David Hurwitz

Great, but not the greatest.......2003-04-17

This is a recording of the "reduced orchestration" version of the Duruflé Requiem. It's scored for trumpets, timpani, harp, strings (in addition to the solo cello), and organ. The added instruments give it a somewhat warmer feeling than the organ-and-cello only version (available on Hyperion), and a somewhat smaller, more intimate feeling than the full orchestra version (perhaps my favorite version, especially Robert Shaw's Telarc recording).

Piquemal et al. turn in an admirable performance. My two favorite moments are the climactic "Dies irae" section in the "Libera me," where the smaller forces actually sound, in their own way, *more* ominous than in larger versions; and the "In Paradisum," where the chorus gives an ethereal sound missed by most other versions. The only downside is that Beatrice Uria-Manzon has a shade too much vibrato in the central "Pie Jesu," but certainly not enough to make you want to skip ver that track.

This Guy Can Play the Organ!.......2001-06-27

I have just gotten interested in organ music in the last two years. Before then, I never really knew there was such a great body of literature written for the organ as a concert instrument. This album was given to me as a gift to encourage my exploration. It has made me realize that Franck and Durufle were giants when it came to writing for the organ. Kent Tritle's playing is dramatic and exciting. I think this album is just terrific! I hope he makes many more.

Great Perfomance + Great Organ = Great Recording.......2001-01-02

Kent Tritle is one of the most outstanding organists in America today. A member of the faculty of his alma mater the Juilliard School since 1996, Tritle is an enormously gifted virtuoso with superb musical sense. As the primary force in the design and construction of the outstanding Noel Mander instrument at St. Ignatius, heard on this disc, it is highly possible that in a hundred years it will be said that Tritle made the most historically significant contribution to the organ scene of New York City in the late twentieth century.

Calculated to show the vast stylistic possibilities of the instrument, the chosen program no less shows the consummate artistry of the performer. The first sonata of Mendelssohn displays the richness of the ensemble sound of the instrument and the warmth with which it fills the acoustical space of the noble building. Tritle does not shy away from enjoying the Romanticism of the work, rather he delights in its expressive nature while never stooping to sentimentality. His approach to the great Bach fantasy and fugue is full of drama and good taste. Tritle understands that the drama is to be found in the piece as it unfolds, rhythmically and harmonically, rather than in gimmicks or registrational tricks. Tritle's performance of this standard is superb. The disc would be worth the price for this selection alone, but there is so much more.

Nicolas De Grigny was selected to represent the French Classical school. This is an easily accessible example of this highly ornamented style. A work of Juilliard composer Vincent Persichetti, "Shimah B'Koli" is given a very respectable performance. This work is a challenge to most listeners, and Tritle makes a convincing presentation. The menu on disc is richly crowned by two scoops from the French Symphonic school. Technically, these works by Franck and Durufle are at least as demanding as the Bach. Kent Tritle has a very special gift for this genre and communicates the mysticism as well as the fireworks of these two masterpieces.
