Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Garrido and K617 have done it again.......2006-01-02

With the collection Chemins du Baroque (The roads of the barroque) K617 brings incredible music mainly from Latin America.
This record covers the vespers of St. John and it is glorious as most of the records from this collection. K617 has created a club that I strongly recommend to join. It costs 40 euros.
And as French will say: Chapeau! (Hats off)

One of the happiest surprises of the modern early-music revival has been the rediscovery of the music of colonial Latin America--and its most intrepid latter-day explorer is Argentine conductor Gabriel Garrido, who has an enterprising series called Les Chemins du Baroque ("The Pathways of the Baroque") on the French label K617. Some of the early titles in the series were more admirable than enjoyable (owing to some less-than-polished performers); there's no such problem with this disc, which presents works most of us wouldn't have thought existed--lavish, festive sacred music from Bolivia. Garrido has reconstructed a complete Vespers service from the Jesuit mission and cathedral in La Plata (present-day Sucre) using multiple-choir works from the mission's archives. While most of the music dates from the mid-to-late 1700s, the compositional style is basically post-Monteverdi--particularly the pleasant (if slightly static) music of local composer Roque Ceruti. Two of the psalms are particular treats: verses of plainchant alternating with a colorful Spanish-17th-century-style organ. Best of all is the closing work, an anonymous Salve Regina for three choirs that shimmers with rich harmonies and suspensions. --Matthew Westphal
