5 out of 5 stars Golden Age Recording Worth Its Weight In Gold.......2004-05-17

I'll have to admit, when it comes to re-releases of classical music, I am usually an easy target, but when the CD that is re-released from LP to CD format has a retro cover, I'm almost always a sucker. All I need to do to prove this point is show people the RCA Red Seal releases I have in my collection. Why do these recordings have such an appeal? Many of them I listened to when growing up and many are the very recordings that introduced me to classical music and started me on a lifelong appreciation of wonderful sounds performed by the world's foremost performers. When it has an original cover, I am transported back in time, albeit without scratches thanks to digital re-mastering. That being said, when I saw a vintage re-release of a Prima Donna with a French poodle (it dates back to 1961, would she be pictured any other way?), my curiosity was piqued. I was naturally drawn to Decca's re-release of a Hilde Gueden recording of operetta favorites. After listening, I realized I struck gold with this collection.

When performing, Hilde Gueden's repertoire tended toward Mozart roles and some Germans works, although she had success in a wide variety of roles including Gilda and Musetta. Her voice is light yet disciplined which makes her a natural for operetta arias. It is evident from listening that Ms. Gueden not only is a capable performer, but enjoys the music she is performing. This recording contains many of the standard favorites such as "Hore ich Zigeurnergeigen" from GRAFIN MARIZA, Straus' Wiener Blut, and the Nuns' Chorus from Casanova to name a few. She performs as a soloist in many of the tracks though in some she is accompanied by the wonderful Vienna Operetta Choir. Robert Stolz does a wonderful job conducting the Vienna Staatsoper Orchestra.

As I mentioned earlier, the recording is packaged nostalgically which Decca hopes will give it a retro appeal. The only drawback is that the liner notes are in very small, almost unreadable font. Perhaps with a magnifying glass, the text can be read, but at a legendary recording at a discount price is a bargain any day, even with a few slight packaging flaws.

    4 out of 5 stars A Very Respectable Production.......2006-04-28

I don't usually write reviews on line, but I must take exception to the negative review above. Ms Smith's voice is light, yes, but this repertoire is not particularly harmed by a light voice; in fact, it was probably written with a lighter voice in mind. Any thinness in her voice is compensated for by Ms Smith's spirited, technically accomplished, and intelligent rendering of the material. The orchestra and conducting are fine, and the choice of selections is inspired by a true appreciation of the genre.

Definitely one to own for the fan of operetta.

    1 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2006-03-24

I had read a good review and the Lehar and Kalman songs sounded interesting. Her pronunciation of various languages is good and that's about all that I can say that is good. Thin little voice with no expression, no verve. We listened once and never will again.

5 out of 5 stars Sumptuous Soprano Operetta Hits.......2004-01-25

A wonderful garland of operetta excerpts magnificently sung and accompanied by an orchestra that obviously gets a kick out of this music, this album will knock your socks off! Ms. Hill Smith has all the notes and sings idiomatic German. You'll want this one if you love operetta.

5 out of 5 stars DOES IT GET ANY BETTER?.......2000-07-27

This marvelous British soprano has one of the loveliest voiceson record today. You will thrill to her readings of these timelessoperetta standards presented with lush orchestration and remarkable fidelity. She has picked two favored composers in Kalman and Lehar to do her cavorting with and the result is music of the highest order. Those of us who are familiar with her art will find this a welcome addition and somewhat of a showpiece to her growing list of treasurable recordings. You will find a variety of favorite operetta classics in this collection. The only number that seems out of place is Kalman's Die Herzogin von Chicago number. Another reviewer, however, found it to be one of the highlights. It does show Miss Smith's versatility. Previous to this, she has given us TREASURES OF THE OPERETTA Vol. 1, 2 and 3 with Peter Morrison which are treasures indeed along with cast recordings of THE COUNT OF LUXEMBURG, THE STUDENT PRINCE, THE MERRY WIDOW, CANDIDE, etc. It is little wonder that she is regarded by many to be among the reigning royalty of the current world of operetta. I find myself asking, can it get any better?

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......1999-12-28

I agree with the previous reviewer. I also bought this because it was repressed music, and it is fantastic.

This is the most fun I've had listening to an opera! It's non-stop entertainment with great dances and beautiful singing as well. There are great "typical" classical numbers as well as others that are more "Broadway" type, but it's better than any musical I have ever heard.

The singing, conducting, and orchestra are all of the highest quality. It's just a really fun, enjoyable, great recording of a fantastic piece of work that will hopefully come into its own. With this recording, we may see a lot more of The Duchess of Chicago.

You can really see the influences this may have had on 1920's Broadway musicals, and the influence they have had on Kalman. I had read that he went to New York before writing this piece and was able to tie things in.

It's quite a large orchestra, and has the fox trot, charleston, children chorus, and some great duets, arias, trios, etc...This is a complete musical feast.

I too cannot get these tunes out of my head.

It's a MUST for any opera lover!
