5 out of 5 stars Chaliapin, the great Russian singer actor. .......2004-08-23

Born in the same year as Caruso and attracting the wild acclaim that used to be accorded to opera singers, Feodor Chaliapin is now featured in the Naxos "Great Singers" series. A selection of his acoustic recordings (1902-1924) occupy the first CD and a selection of his electric recordings (1926-1936), and in charge of restoration is Ward Marston.

Like Caruso, Chaliapin had a huge voice that nevertheless proved eminently compatible with acoustic recording processes. Indeed, collectors need not be deterred by the age of many of these recordings. Some of the very best items, whether opera or song, fall into the acoustic group. The 1911 recordings of Rubinstein's "Demon" excerpts, which I heard a few times many years ago and have never forgotten, are amongst the best of all in this entire selection.

Also like Caruso, Chaliapin's recording career owed much to producer Fred Gaisberg who, in his autobiography, allotted a whole chapter to this great singer. In recent times, eminent critic John Steane has named Chaliapin as one of the two or three great singer actors of the C20th. Gaisberg was responsible for recording the Prayer and Death of Boris during an actual performance of "Boris Godunov" at Covent Garden in 1928. Perhaps this best indicates Chaliapin's work as singer and actor. Another successful item here is the `Le veau d'or' from "Faust", which one critic has judged ideal for showing Chaliapin's special magnetism.

The notes provide an informative survey of Chaliapin's recording output. One error is the attributing some of the orchestral support in the recordings from the 1920s to the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and orchestra which was founded by Beecham in 1932.

5 out of 5 stars A Chaliapin feast.......2003-02-14

It's nice of Naxos to collect in one place some of the most representative recordings of the great Russian basso, Fyodor Chaliapin. This is a 2CD set; the first CD is from the acoustic era of recording, the second from the electrical era. Not only are the expected arias and songs from the Russian literature represented, but also there are more than a few Italian/French/German selections.

There are two scenes from 'Boris Godunov': Varlaam's Song and the Farewell and Death of Boris. Three versions of Mussorgsky's 'Song of the Flea', from 1907, 1929 and 1936 (the latter his last recording) are included, all of them marvelous. Other highlights, made all the more effective by Chaliapin's amazing ability to act with the voice, are 'La calunnia' from 'The Barber of Seville' and 'Le veau d'or' from Gounod's 'Faust.' I also liked 'Chanson Bachique' by Glazunov, which I'd never heard before.

The sound is fantastic, the wizardry of Ward Marston who, along with Mark Obert-Thorn, is involved with Naxos's extensive re-issue of treasures from the history of the recorded voice.

If you don't have these selections from previous issues on other labels, you can't go wrong here. And then there's the budget price . . .

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Celebrated portrayals captured live from the stage.......2003-11-29

These remarkable live recordings, amongst the first to be made at London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, captured excerpts from a performance of Verdi's OTELLO on 17th June, 1926 and a performance of Gounod's FAUST on 22nd June, 1928. For lovers of historical vocal recordings, they preserve the celebrated portrayals of Giovanni Zenatello's Otello and Feodor Chaliapin's Mephistopheles taken directly from the stage. Some of the tracks on this release by Pearl are rare unpublished recordings, and thereby making this release even more treasurable.

Zenatello was, together with Leo Slezak, the leading Otello in the first quarter of the 20th Century, reigning between the decline of Tamagno and the rise of Martinelli. Some eminent voice critics have dismissed Zenatello as merely a useful and sturdy tenor. However, from the evidence of this recording, despite the fact that Zenatello was already fifty at the time and that his career was by then gradually drawing to a close, he still makes a huge impression as the Moor of Venice. Many of his top notes are glorious and thrillingly placed and while his interpretation may not be as poetic or searingly poignant as that of Martinelli (Zenatello's "Dio, mi potevi scagliar" as captured here is somewhat spoilt by fast tempo and imprecise declamation), there is still considerable intensity in his obviously seasoned portrayal of the difficult part. He sings very well, too, and with considerable artistry. It is not at all difficult to appreciate Zenatello's greatness in his signature role from these half-hour excerpts. Beside him, Giuseppe Noto, while not being a famous international name, sings with some character as Iago even though the voice itself is not of distinguished quality. One regret here is that the singing of Lotte Lehman, the Desdemona of the performance, has not been captured owing to contractual reasons.

Chaliapin was already in his mid-fifties in 1928. Yet, his Mephistopheles in Gounod's opera is still a most memorable assumption, even though some of his vocal mannerisms are more obvious by this stage. One "sees" the great Russian bass as possessing the "face" of the character just by listening to his singing, which, at its finest moments, is of magisterial quality and is, above all, hugely charismatic. The title role here is taken by Joseph Hislop, who, apart from some minor lapses of intonation in Act I (which is given complete on this CD), provides some strong lyrical singing. In fact, his "Salut demeure chaste et pure" would probably compare quite favourably with many of the finest tenors of this generation. The orchestra in FAUST is flowingly conducted by Eugene Goossens and the chorus sounds very much alive here as in the Verdi.

Given the age of the recordings and the circumstances of their creation, the sound on this release can be said to be quite amazing, for there's not too much surface noise and the voices come across vividly. The orchestral contributions are also rather good for the period and musical balances, while far from being ideal, are at least not too seriously distorted. Happily, Pearl has promised that this will be the first volume of a series of live recordings from Covent Garden and lovers of vocal music will have much to look forward to.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Voice From The Past.......2006-07-27

This two-disc set gives a good overview of the great Russian Bass singer. It has a total of 36 selections, and covers the years 1911 to 1936.

With a voice of tremendous range and power, Chaliapin could also sing softly and with feeling. A very flexible instrument that comes through the old recording technology of the 78 record era. A good example of the pure physical gifts of his voice is 'Farlaf's Rondo' by Glinka. A 'patter' song, with words and syllables sung rapidly and seemingly without taking a breath. As if the performance wasn't difficult enough, Chaliapin speeds up the tempo at the ending of the rondo! It shows the breath control he had, and while the singer seems to be none of the worst for wear, I was left breathless just listening!

Two selections, Boris' Monologue from 'Boris Godounov' and 'Song of The Flea', by Mussorgsky, are represented by two different performances. This gives a good idea of the breadth of Chaliapin's art, as each performance of the same work is full of nuance and artistry. It is hard for me to pick which performance I like best. As with any great artist, each time a work is performed it is not just a repitition, but a unique recreation.

The transfers naturally have much surface noise, as all are from the 78 rpm record era. I have most of these recordings on transfers to LP's and the noise is much more apparant than on the CD transfers. With older recordings such as these, any transfers and 'cleaning up' of the sound can only go so far. If too much of the noise from the originals is 'cleaned up', the recording can lose presence. Whomever engineered the transfers to CD has hit a happy middle ground. The background noise is still there, but not so annoying as on LP, while the sound of the actual music and Chaliapin's voice seems much more alive.

What I have read about Chaliapin says that he was not only a great singer, but a great actor also. The two do not always go together, for a great voice in opera can make up for a lack of acting ability. To have both talents rolled into one is rare. Contemporary accounts of Chaliapin's operatic performances comment as much on his acting as his singing. There arevideos of his film performance in Ibert's Don Quichotte, which I want to see when I have the chance.

If you're passion is the human voice, you must hear Chaliapin. It is not possible to say he or anyone else was the best. But these recordings show he was a consummate artist, and are well worth exploring.

              Recommended.

              4 out of 5 stars Chaliapin - Prima Voce.......2006-03-18

The recordings are old but the only way one can hear a legend!

The selections are excellent and the quality is as one would expect from this vintage recording.

I enjoy going back to hear these voices and this is the only way to understand the history
