Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2003-07-29
I bought this disc based on my love of Wunderlich's Dichterliebe, which is one of my favorite CDs of all time. Well, I could hardly have been more disappointed. This is a collection of sappy old tunes, sung in a very sentimental and overdramatic way. If you're a fan of Bocelli and his ilk, go for it. Otherwise, stay clear!
A Must Have Wunderlich CD.......2000-12-19
This is a "must have" for any Wunderlich fan. I have a large Wunderlich collection full of many duplicate songs. I have heard none of these recordings before, however. A very positve plus is that many of the selections were recorded during the last year of his life - and in stereo! The collection opens with a stereo recording of "La donna mobile" in Italian! This is the first I have heard Wunderlich sing this in the original language. It then includes the same Tosca aria that is included in the 5 CD Deutsch Grammophone collection sung in German - however this recording is in stereo. Actually, I hesitated to buy this CD since it was called a "Historical Recording." I was sure that it would all be mono recordings. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the many stereo renditions. Many of the songs are different interpretations of pieces released by a major label. Some are songs that he recorded for a label, but have not been released yet - like "Tiritombe." Also, "Ich kusse ihre hand..." has only been released on casette. The CD ends with "Granada." This is the same arrangement as the DG release - but a different, and still very thrilling, interpretation!
The CD also has many previously unreleased recordings of his earlier singing years. It is fascinating to chronical the vocal maturity of such a wonderful artist. The singing fare is decidedly light - but like everything else he sang, Wunderlich does it right. This is singing at its highest!
More Wunderlich - Gott sei dankt!.......2000-10-17
I was thrilled to get this cd with some Wunderlich arias I had never heard before. I have loved his voice since I first heard it (on LP) in 1966. The fascinating thing about this cd is that there are selections recorded as early as 1954 (when he was only 23) back-to back with arias recorded in 1965 and 1966, just before he died at the age of 35. The voice was beautiful at 23 but what a tremendous amount of growth in sound and interpretation just 11 years later. The booklet also provides some biographical information I had not seen before; e.g. in his early days, Wunderlich had a heavy Pfalz accent (the region in which he was born). He had to overcome this -- which obviously he did. His diction and enunciation are among the purest ever recorded. I visited his hometown in Kusel, Germany as few years ago. You can see where he was born; there is a library with costumes, pictures and recordings and a concert hall named after him. (Even the local furniture company is called "Moebil Fritz"! Buy this album -- it's a treasure!

Product Description
This biblical story, with its historical references to specific cities, generals and kings, is accepted as canon by Roman Catholic theologians, although it doesn t appear in either Hebrew or Protestant scriptures. The Book of Judith is set in the time of the mighty Assyrian ruler Nebuchadnezzar, King of Nineveh. Seeking to expand his empire, the king sends armies, led by General Holofernes (Oloferne), to subdue neighboring kingdoms, all of whom surrender under his powerful forces. The only ones who refuse to capitulate are the Israelites, who cordon off their mountain passes and gather provisions to resist a siege. Instead of a massacre, Holofernes discovers and commandeers their water sources. Faced with drought, the elders of Israel prepare to surrender. Their leader, Prince Ozias, suggests a five-day wait, during which interval Israel s prayers for help may be heard by God. It is at this point that Scarlatti s oratorio takes up the story, depicting the entrance of the pious Judith (Giuditta) who will distract Holofernes until she is able to slay him and make her escape, displaying his severed head, causing the enemy to retreat, sparing the Israelites. Scarlatti s score is in the Italianate style of the period, and the work is largely continuo-driven, with string ritornelli concluding most of the arias. This stellar performance, with the renowned Julianne Baird in the role of Judith/Giuditta, brings this remarkable story to blazing life.

delicious, addictive. If you only buy one A.S. oratorio..........2003-09-09
I'm a big fan of Scarlatti pere, but unfortunately other recordings of his oratorii I've heard are somewhat disjointed. This McGegan recording gets it right. According to the notes in the score (Editioni di Santis, Rome 1964; ed. Lino Bianchi) La Giuditta was considered Scarlatti's best oratorio. Who am I to argue? The singers are unfamiliar to me but are uniformly good. The arias are involving, almost catchy, and the recitations are not dull. I'm fairly addicted to this one, after having played the Lesne/Piau/Il Seminario Musicale Stabat Mater to death. I also recommend, though less heartily, A. Scarlatti's Il Primo Omicidio, cond. Rene Jacobs.

The story of Judith and Holofernes has been set to music by many composers (Vivaldi, Mozart, Naumann, and Honegger among them). Alessandro Scarlatti's, recorded here, was composed for a private performance in Rome in 1693. The plot recounts the Biblical story of Judith, who, to save the city of Bethulia, seduces and beheads Holofernes, the general of the enemy army. Scarlatti alternates martial moments with more gentle and introspective ones. The "action" moves from the city to Holofernes' camp, and there are da capo arias galore. The music is polished and the continuo---cello, theorbe, organ and harpsichord---is used effectively and colorfully. Martin Gester conducts carefully and stylishly, but one wishes he had been a bit more "driven." This recording was made after a run of live performances, but there's little feel of the theater. The singing is quite good, with Celine Ricci as a powerful Judith and counter-tenor Martin Oro growing in stature as Holofernes as the work progresses. In short, a good performance of an interesting, rare work. --Robert Levine
