Great solid basic collection, a real bargain with mostly outstanding performances. Having played several in bands and orchestras and sung one (the Rimsky Mlada), I have a good idea how they should go. As other other commentators say, there are better individual recordings, such as anything by Fennell and the Eastman band. The organ pieces just don't do this music justice, although a real cathedral organ can come close, but that's beyond these discs. The Nielsen Aladdin March is the new one for me. Berlioz by Solti is great! Buy it!

I am impressed most by the variety in 40 Famous Marches on 2 CDs, a Double Decca release. The performers include Philharmonic Orchestras, a Brass Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, organ, Symphony, and for nine selections, the Wiener Philharmoniker. I am not sure if the word schmaltzy ought to be applied to any of this, but the Wiener Philharmoniker often exhibits a unique sound which is not quite the same as any of the other selections. The final five selections are all performed by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble under Elgar Howarth in ADD/DDD format in 1983 and 1985. Two of those five are rousing marches by John Philip Sousa, another called `Entry of the Gladiators' is typical of songs played by live bands at circuses, and the remaining two are from movie soundtracks. `Colonel Bogey' is famous from the movie about British prisoners of war building a railroad bridge for the Japanese in World War Two, the Bridge over the River Kwai.

The major source of variety in these 40 selections is that many of them are taken from operas and even a ballet, Tchaikovsky's famous `The Nutcracker--March.' I originally found this collection when I was searching for `Funeral March of a Marionette' by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) which has a theme that is famous from its use by a television series hosted by Alfred Hitchcock. If you can't remember how that goes, you ought to buy this collection and listen for it early: it is selection 4 on the first CD. The main theme was fun to play and easy to learn in a book of piano lessons, but the rest is quite whimsical and worth listening to, and people who play organ with pedal notes might still be able to find music for playing the entire arrangement, difficult though it is for someone like me, who becomes confused when too many things are going on at the same time.

There was something on this CD that sounded weird, and I had to check to see what it was, and it was just someone playing the organ, but he was trying to play `The Ruins of Athens -- Turkish March' by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).

Something by Handel sounds so much like the beginning of a movie that I expect someone to start singing, `The hills are alive with The Sound Of Music,' but this CD is something else. The first CD starts and ends with marches from `Pomp and Circumstance' by Edward Elgar, so people who have been to a lot of graduation ceremonies will be expecting plenty of familiar music. The 6:32 time is slightly longer than the Wagner's `Tannhauser -- Grand March' on the first CD, but long graduation ceremonies may play it even longer, until all the diplomas are handed out.

Verdi, Strauss, Schubert, Prokofiev, Berlioz, these famous composers might be recognized by people who know music, but the `Wedding March' by Felix Mendelssohn is famous with everybody for what it is used for. If you haven't heard it lately, maybe you should hear it a few times so you won't be so nervous the next time it comes around.

This is a wonderful collection. What a wide collection of exciting pieces, all in one affordable package!! It encompasses so many composers and styles, from the majesty of Elgar and Walton, to upbeat Sousa to schmaltzy Strauss. It also includes such classic marches as Meyerbeer's Coronation, a pinnacle of the French opera style, the timeless Wedding March of Mendelssohn, and the brilliant organ piece, Marche Triomphale of Sigfrid Karg-Elert. There are also some interesting oddball selections like the mysterious Things to Come of Bliss (composed for the H.G. Wells film), the jaunty Chabrier marche, and oriental flair of Nielsen's Aladdin.
In reading some of the other criticisms, it is true that the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble perhaps is not the best or most noted ensemble. However, overall, the pieces they play are either Sousa or patriotic-sounding tunes. Their only forays into the true classical realm are the Grand Marches from Tannhauser and Aida, and they are not half bad. So don't let those pieces keep you from buying the CD - 1) because most of the songs they do play are great and 2) they only play in 1/4 of the music....

If you're looking for a collection of marches from classical music, this would be a fine one to get.
It contains recordings made from 1958 to 1996 by some of the world's great orchestras, plus several numbers by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, and four arranged for organ.
The first 35 marches include many of the best-known classical marches, plus three "coronation" marches, written as far back as the end of the seventeenth century (The Prince of Denmark's March) up to 1954 (The Dam Busters). The last five pieces are "popular" marches played by the Jones Ensemble.
The liner notes give a nice history of marches, including where most of the ones in this collection fit into that scenario.

3 out of 5 stars Too, too much Philip Jones Ensemble.......2003-04-17

A mixed bag of music, 40 FAMOUS MARCHES compiles a good many marches - some not too common.

The CD has it's high points:
1. Chicago Symphony (under Solti!) playing Berlioz's Hungarian March (love that trombone excerpt - BAM!)
2. London Philharmonic playing Prokofiev's "The Love for Three Oranges" March
3. Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 (also London Philharmonic)

BUT... There's some real stuff on here, too. I must concur with a prior reviewer: FAR TOO MUCH Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Case in point - Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever, as played by PJBE is completely devoid of the energy and fire it needs. The trombone countermelody at the end is just NOT THERE (you'll strain to hear it). There's just no way this is right. PBJE is great in their setting, but this is just not it.

Overall, this CD might be a good compilation for the novice listener, but I would recommend the more experienced (or trombonists, like myself) purchase works by individual symphonies that include the music you desire - a more expensive, yet more expressive alternative.

    Ideal for an opera lover, or for anyone who loves gorgeous singing. I am an opera nut and was introduced to this one by accident; "Au gond du temple saint" from Pearl Fishers (selection #6, disc one) was playing on the stereo in the Metropolitan Opera giftshop when I walked in at intermission one night. I thought it was so stunning I bought my first copy of the CD then and there; and have bought 2 other "back-up copies" since then, as well as having it on my iPod.

    If you are in search of a cd containing various popular pieces from the greatest operas in the world, then search no more. This cd contains classic operatic pieces, sung by some of the most talented tenors and sopranos out there, including Placido Domingo. Madame Butterfly's Un Bel Di and Turandot's Nessun Dorma are, without a doubt, two of the most emotional and dramatic songs ever composed. Fortunately, this inexpensive two cd set includes those songs and many more. This cd is a delight to own, whether or not you've ever attended an opera.

    Album Description

    A Night At The Opera features five young singers who have already made considerable names for themselves. The soprano Indra Thomas has been acclaimed as the next great Verdi soprano, while the mezzo-soprano Kristine Jepson has enjoyed great success in the key role of Octavian at the New York Met, in addition to other roles there and throughout Europe and America. The lyric tenor Matthew Polenzani's international career also includes appearances at the Met in a varied and challenging repertoire. The Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecien's operatic appearances have included the Met and the Vienna State Opera, with a number of distinguished awards, and the prize-winning bass-baritone Valerian Ruminski boasts a particularly wide repertoire in a career of growing distinction. These marvelous talents are backed by the renowned Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with internationally noted opera conductor Charles Rosekrans.

    I have only a few quibbles about this release, but it really is enjoyable, and repeated listenings have only increased my admiration. The repertoire ranges across much of the operatic spectrum - okay, there's no Wagner, but perhaps that's too much to expect at this point in their careers. Since most of these selections have been recorded by other, established artists, individual comparisons are pointless. The overall impression given by these singers is that of vibrant youth and spontaneous joy in singing. Matthew Polenzani is perhaps the best known of these, and certainly justifies one's attention with some fine tenorizing. If he can't quite pull off the SCHICCHI aria (who has, lately?) he sings a splendid Faust, and there are darn few good ones these days. He's a real pleasure to hear. Since I've heard Indra Thomas live on numerous occasions, I'm thrilled to have her on CDs at last. She possesses a soaring, juicy lyric soprano (unfortunately not all that well captured here - the voice has a gorgeous spin to it, reminiscent of the young Leontyne Price, and that emerges from the recording only occasionally). Ms. Thomas sang the most beautiful and one of the most exciting performances of the TROVATORE Leonora I have ever heard (and I've heard some great Leonoras), and I'm glad to have a memento of it here. Valerian Ruminski, whose bass is exceptionally beautiful and well-focused, is one of the most fluent male exponents of coloratura that I've heard in 50 years of live performances, so I'm delighted to have the Purcell and Handel selections. In addition, he possesses what Walter Legge called "an immediately recognizable timbre" - the voice sticks in the memory. Kristine Jepson and Mariusz Kwiecien also acquit themselves well. My single real reservation about the individual selections is Ms. Jepson's track of the Composer's outburst from ARIADNE ("Sein wir wieder gut!"). In common with many mezzos, she sounds overparted by its high, soaring lines, though she throws herself into with gusto. To my mind, this role really is best sung by a soprano. Nevertheless, Ms. Jepson proves herself adept enough for Sesto and Zerlina. Mr. Kwiecien's robust baritone is a treat to hear in Verdi, and he and Mr. Ruminski sing a wonderful PURITANI duet. The orchestra plays well and while one might wish the conductor was a bit more "accommodating" to the singers, things move along nicely. This really is, on the whole, an invigorating and tuneful evening's worth of entertainment and a promise of fine things to come.

    Firstly, this is again one of those albums where we are listening to music recorded long before the age of even electrical recording. We are treated to some rather interesting interpretations. Some pieces are recorded twice, and it seems some times with piano and then again with orchestra. It makes for an interesting comparision.

    Marcella Sembrich was a great singer in the days of Patti, and often seen as some as her superior. The interesting thing about Sembrich was her skills in music were not limited to voice, and unlike many singers of then (and even some of today) she did read music and understood its notations. In point of fact, she was a gifted pianist and a violinist. It was not rare in any of her concerts to be treated to song, piano sonatas (and very difficult music to say the least), and a violin concerto by some great composer, or Rode's variations for violin. When she first did such a concert in America, the critics were very tongue in cheek BEFORE the concert, certain they would be indulging some Prima Donna whim. To their surprise and delight, not only did she sing magnificently, she played better than some well renouned pianists and violinist. Her concerts were a musical feast.

    However, this recording seems only to provide us with her voice (unless it is she who is accompanying herself on the piano, but no notations of that are indicated). There is the usual overly quick very unreflective tempi used that were common at that time to capture a piece in the allotted time. There are also cuts to pieces. From her attack, I would assume she was a bit past her prime when she made these recordings, as high notes are often begun like "excited screams" rather than a smooth effortless attack; but even then, they are not unmusical. Also, we are subjected to the tastes of that day, and there are things allowed that simply today would not be tolerated. Yet, that was tolerated back then, and even had the approval of the composers in most cases.

    Interestingly, we will hear her sing songs that simply we would not associate with her voice type today. She sings Violetta, which we do associate with her voice, but she also sings Norma, and Elvira from Ernani, which we associate with more dramatic voices. Since she actually did sing those roles on stage, it must be assumed that her voice was large enough to make the affect required.

    What I must say about this recording is the quality is supreme. Of course, we can expect much of the hiss associated with old recordings, but the remastering is so masterful that it is not a bother as it can be in some recordings, nor are we forced to "listen through the din" to hear the singer. She comes out loud and clear.

    Truly this is an excellent set for any collector to add to their collection (and perhaps it should be listened to by some serious voice students just to understand many different ways to make coloratura singing sound MEANINGFUL), but it is not for everyone. IF you are not into old recordings, I really doubt it will be of interest to you. Truly it is for those who are dedicated to hearing the history of recorded singing and enjoying it.

    The music is excellent, with high quality sound. Not irritating as some classical music can be. Plus the tempo's are varied which is great depending if you need something fast paced or more slow. Best of all, the kids enjoyed it!

    How to gently insert a little culture into the grandkids' lives without Mom freaking out.....send this set of CDs for Christmas. Dad's into heavy metal and Mom, although she has a long history of listening to Classical music as a child, is now into Country. Nothing wrong with that, but how are the three little ones going to hear any of the Classics with Grandma living more than 600 miles away? "Play this in the background while they're having creative time," said I, "and see if they don't enjoy it." When I talked with them a week later the 4 year old couldn't wait to tell me how much he liked the "playtime music" I'd sent him. The quality of the recording is good and the variety of rhythms and tempos make it interesting. Yes they're a little trite and you're going to have to explain that the theme to "the Bad News Bears" really is Classical, but that's okay. If they skipped the genius of Mozart as an infant, or even if they teethed to "the Magic Flute", these CDs will give them a taste of a variety of good music and who knows how far into the Classical realm it may send them as they mature?

    This is a fine collection of mostly classical themes.
    Some of them have nice creepy moments, but on the whole, it's just some solid music. Not something to buy if you want really "spooky" music, but worthwhile for some interesting listening.

    This is an awesome album. It starts off with thunder crashing, running footsteps, a gate creaking, the wind howling, a cat screeching, a door opening, a woman crying that she needs help....and then SCREAMING! And then straight into track 2, the overture to 'The Phantom of the Opera'. Wow! The rest of the cd also features 'creepy' music from various sources, such as Alfred Hitchcock films, like Psycho, various classic works like Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Night on Bald Mountain', and also some other creepy sound effects. A good album not only for Halloween but I dare you to listen to it during a dark night with a thunderstorm raging outside.

    I've owned the "Chiller" CD since it's release in '89. At the time, I was working for a local Audio/Video/Music dealer, and was looking for 'demo' CD's containing not necessarily heavy bass, but ones displaying incredible dynamic range, and sharp transient peaks. I already owned a copy of "Time Warp", also on Telarc, and was intrigued when I read about "Chiller. Needless to say, I was extremely pleased with this disc. Not only did I get a disc containing some great treatments of classics, but the re-make of the "Psycho" suite is wonderful (the shower sequence is very faithful to the original)! A word of warning.....the dynamic range of this disc is not to be underestimated.....I drove an older amplifier into thermal shutdown VERY quickly with track #1. I haven't tried it since I've upgraded my home system....hmmm....might have to scare the neighbors tonight (or at least rattle a few dental fillings)!

    This CD contains tons of great classic Halloween tunes. Even though the names might sound unfamiliar, you probably know most of the music on here through cultural osmosis. Heck, it's worth it just for "Funeral March of a Marionette" (the Alfred Hitchcock show theme.)

    Having seen her in live performance, I am perfectly willing to argue that Olga Borodina is one of the better singers of our times, perhaps the very best. Having listened to this recording, I am forced to admit that she could and should have been better. This is a recital from a very good mezzo, but Borodina should be more, much more, something extraordinary.

    Four stars, nevertheless, for a rare and beautiful voice.

    The voice is wonderful: unbelievably smooth, rich, warm, with a particularly pure timbre. A very exceptional mezzo, and a joy to behold live: even though Borodina School of Acting often consists of not much more than standing there and looking busty and imperial, there is something smoldering going on- I have seen her recently on stage as Delilah and she was every bit as good as the hype has it. She can be surprisingly witty, too, especially in Rossini. Strangely then, how any drama or excitement or any particular distinction is missing from this collection. Delilah arias are beautiful, the runs in Rossini clean and pretty, Queen of Spades quite exciting actually; but the rest is ho-hum, expect for Dido, which is so overdone and bad, it's almost fun, and Handel, which is exceptionally deranged - as Baroque as double cheese burger with Russian dressing. However, even in these pieces, if you can ignore the heavy approach, the voice sounds great.
    In other words, catch her live on stage, or at least on opera DVD if you can, but if she is not coming to a town near you any time soon, this CD will do as a basic introduction to the wonders of Borodina's voice.

    I bought this CD because I wasn't sure I would ever get to hear Borodina live, and had heard great things about her voice. Well, it IS a strong, solid, beautiful instrument handled with excellent technique - and, in this case, well recorded too. So what's the problem? Cold, impersonal, Mack-truck approach to performing - very little real connection or involvement at all, as far as I could sense. I agree with another reviewer that the Russian pieces come off by far the best and do give some pleasure. But I'll never listen to this CD again because I find that sort of mechanical singing repellent and boring - so I think I wasted my money.

    This recording shows Borodina at her most marvelous - so far - and she IS marvelous. Her technique is superb, with a range of notes, volumes, timbres, even vibratos which she uses with amazing skill to bring her characters and every word they sing to life. Her empathy with the audience and with the roles she plays comes across even on this CD, so no one can doubt her great ability as an actress as well as her phenomenal voice which is rich, solid, and full. The instrument is well trained and conditioned and Borodina uses it more skillfully than most. What a great treasure this CD is!

    As my first experience with the voice of Olga Borodina, I must say that I am impressed. Her voice is sumptuous and seductive. I have not experienced Olga live, but I am sure that for one who has heard her on the stage, a recording does not do her justice. I must say, however, that I think this is a beautiful recording. Olga's voice is amazing, and I can only imagine how she must sound in a live concert if she sounds this good on a recording.
