    3 out of 5 stars Polished, light Romantics that needn't be so cautious.......2006-11-13

    It's become a hallmark of Thielemann's to offer something different in German classics. Here he gives us a tour of Overtures 101 from Weber to Wagner, including beloved works that will never go out of favor no matter how often they are repeated. His take is to bleach a good deal of the fervent, passionate feelings out of the music. Thus The Oberon and Euryanthe Over. of Weber become much closer to Mendelsoohn, and Mendelssohn lite at that. The Vienna Phil. follows his lead with exceptionally delicacy and elegance. After one or two selections I yearned for more thrust and weight, but of their kind these are lovely readings, and one piece unknown even to experienced listeners outside Germany, Marschner's Hans Heiling, comes as a nice surprise in the vein of Weber, at times suggesting the maghical Wolf's Glen music from Freischutz before flitting off in the direction of Nicolai's Merry Wives of Windsor.

    To be candid, I'm running out of confidence that Thielemann has it in him to be a great conductor, but there's no doubt that he's a real musician in these works.

    An excellent CD all round.

    Besides the great Mendelssohn (Midsummer ND, Calm Sea) and Wagner (Rienzi) overtures, the lesser known overtures by Weber et al are really great examples of German Romantic overtures.

    Beautifully played by VPO and the sound is excellent -- can hear some extra inner bits in Rienzi not often heard in other recordings (and I have heaps of that wonderful early Wagner overture!).

    Volume II of Opera Obession is as good as Volume I, which is to say, very good indeed. The price may be bargain basement, but the quality is not, and this is another wonderful selection of outstanding opera singers. There are few liner notes to speak of (no years of the performances), but this is a very minor flaw in an album of great value.

        Seven overtures from the first half of the nineteenth century and one (Humperdinck's 'Königskinder') from half a century later is the programme of this 1988 CD from Bratislava in Slovakia. The first three, all by Carl Maria von Weber, are, for me, by far the most interesting. Their evocative horns and their conjuring up of mystery, hunting scenes and the world of the fairies ('Oberon') is both musically convincing and at the same time a demonstration of how far music had progressed in the quarter of a century since the all too early death of Mozart. The overtures by Marschner, Nicolai and Lortzing are all entertaining in their way and contain more or less obvious reminiscences of Weber's work; the Humperdinck seems a little out of place and has a definitely more 'modern' feeling about it.

        Alfred Walter and the CSR Symphony Orchestra give a fairly spirited performance, in which the strings sometimes sound a little overstretched. I have owned this CD for some years now, but it was only after I obtained my present hifi equipment that I began to hear the quality of this music: the recorded sound is not brilliant (the listener being some way from the 'stage') and benefits no end from a powerful, audiophile amplifier. It would be interesting to hear this music in historical performance practice on period instruments.

            In my desperate attempt to search for interesting early 19th century operas (Spohr's 'Jessonda' is still winning), Marschner's score is another frustrating example of an interesting exercise that does not make the grade of good operas that are unjustly neglected. The piece is mercifully presented with cuts as one of Marschner's greatest sins is his tendency to overwrite and repeat text unneccessarily ("Der Vampyr" particularly suffers from this). The libretto is a particularly stupid affair in the German supernatural mode and makes "Der Freischütz" seem a model of intelligence. A good performance nevertheless with Hermann Prey in fine form. Sound is only adequate.

            This is a fine opera. It is also well performed, and for an old recording, the sound quality is pretty good.
