Customer Reviews:
Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06
The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.
As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.
However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.
But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.
My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.
Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

This is the decade when Deutsche Grammophon discovered America. Though the label's motherland is still well represented by Herbert von Karajan's unveiling young Anne-Sophie Mutter in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 and Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 (both played with the freshness of youth), Carlo Maria Giulini brought the yellow label to Los Angeles in a much-heralded return to opera with Verdi's Falstaff. The mellifluous though not always dramatically attuned dream cast features Barbara Hendricks (Nannetta), Katia Ricciarelli (Alice Ford), and Renato Bruson as the most poetic Falstaff on record. Leonard Bernstein's all-star but problematic Candide and West Side Story recordings are heard in well-chosen excerpts, and the one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti is reconstituted from his opera A Quiet Place (in which it was dispersed and imbedded). Elsewhere, Ivo Pogorelich's early Chopin Sonata No. 2, Ravel's "Gaspard de la nuit," and Prokofiev's Sonata No. 6 show a musician of staggering imagination limited by unrefined technique. Horowitz in Moscow, Krystian Zimerman's Chopin Ballades and Daniel Barenboim's Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 have all aged well, though Gidon Kremer's Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Giuseppe Sinopoli's Mendelssohn "Italian" Symphony paired with Schumann's Symphony No. 2 have surprisingly little to say. Mischa Maisky's Bach and Vivaldi recordings (many with Martha Argerich on modern piano) have lots to say, but not to the historically informed performance crowd. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
Superb Schumann, etc........2000-11-08
Seven years ago I was in a Vienna music shop and passed on the opportunity to buy the original Sinopoli recording of the Schumann Second - my favorite musical work - with the Vienna Philharmonic. Until this collection was released, I had never heard this particular 2nd Symphony recording which is now truly my favorite (and I have them all). It even led me to find the original release (which includes the Manfred Overture) by searching the Internet for used CDs. Sinopoli and Vienna beautifully convey the struggle and ultimate triumph of this great symphony.
The other recordings are also among DG's best and helped to fill in several repertoire gaps in my collection. I highly recommend the entire set. Thanks to DGG for reissuing these great recordings, especially Sinopoli's Schumann.
Who says there was nothing good in the 1980s?.......2000-04-09
Not enough can be said for this marvellous compilation of some of the finest recordings from 1978-87! Nevertheless, I will try to do some justice and start at the beginning. Anne-Sophie Mutter's Mozart concerto and stellar Bruch set the tone for this set. Very few recordings have the depth of insight into the Mozart that she does, and for such a young woman! The next disc is dedicated to another violinist par excellence: Gidon Kremer, whose Tchaikowsky concerto will blow you out of your chair, even compared with the Perlman recording of the same work. Disc three focuses on Daniel Barenboim the conductor, although the last track features one of his finest recorded piano works, the paraphrase of Rigoletto by Liszt. The two recordings featured are (brace yourself), the Perlman/Paris recording of the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole, the likes of which have not been known before or since, and the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony with Chicago and the organ of Chartres. The little catch in the Saint-Saens is that the organ part and orchestral work were recorded a month seperate from each other and across the Atlantic, but if you didn't read the liner notes, it would be impossible to tell; the editing is so well done! Ivo Pogorelich's Gaspard de la Nuit gives the work new meaning, not to say any less of his Chopin Second sonata. Giulini's conducting of Verdi's Falstaff is a force not to be reckoned with, with flawless casting to boot. I would expect more from Sinopoli than the Schumann delivers, however this is partly DG's fault for picking one of his least successful recordings. The Bernstein disc is all of his own music, including highlights from the splendid Candide and Trouble in Tahiti. Have a laugh over Carreras' pronunciation in West Side Story (why cast him as the American! ) and the other thoroughly inappropriate voices for this work, but remember that Bernstein was given the cold shoulder on this work and was trying to make it appeal to the classical crowd that had unfortunately shunned it on Broadway.
Maisky's cello playing is next, with the three sonatas originally for harpsichord and viola da gamba being played on modern cello with Martha Argerich at the piano. These are excellent recordings if inauthentic, but are certainly the best modernizations available, as are the two Vivaldi concerti with Orpheus. Saving the best for last, Vladimir Horowitz's landmark 1986 return to Moscow is no less breathtaking on the 1000th listening than on the first. There may be no better single CD of piano music in existance; the simplest track "Träumerei" from Schumann's Kinderszenen is utter perfection and emotion molded into one. Zimerman holds his own beautifully, though, with some of the best Chopin Ballades to be had. True, they lack some of the momentum and drive of the Rubinstein recordings, but the sheer technical ability displayed along with absolute control (and they're not at all skimpy on the emotion either!), they are in the top five recordings of these works ever. Add to this his recording of the Liszt E-flat concerto with Seiji Ozawa/Boston Symphony, which is flawless. The cherry on top (!) is the Liszt Totentanz, which is so often played as an overly flashy, bangy, loud and raucous showpiece. Not so here, even in such a murderously difficult and crashing work, Zimerman displays control, even if it means wrestling the work to the floor. This set is pricey, no doubt, but well worth it (and the sore arms you'll get carrying it home, another good reason to mail-order it) for the unmatched brilliance.

Bronislaw Huberman was one of the violin giants of his time. Even though he made some major electrical recordings, it's worthwhile listening through the limited sound of these acoustics (with a few very early electrical items) to hear his penetrating musicianship applied to mostly light violin showpieces. In general, Huberman's Brunswicks have been difficult to tolerate because of high levels of surface noise. Recording engineer Ward Marston has done a wonderful job of taming the surfaces while bringing out the violin sound with vivid presence. If this set is a museum piece, it's a beautiful one that should appeal to any serious violin lover. --Leslie Gerber

Substandard Transfers of Great Recordings.......2000-03-06
When I was growing up, I was given custody of about twenty 78-rpm sets that my grandparents had owned. Some of these were first-class and notable recordings, among them the Lalo "Symphonie espagnole" included on this CD. It was a fiery performance captured by a clear and vivid recording, remarkably so for a pre-LP issue. When I had occasion to look for a CD transfer of it, I decided to spend a little extra money and get Pearl's transfer because of their reputation for presenting clean and honest transfers of the original sources.
This disc was a great disappointment.
Let it be said first that the performances are just great. The young Milstein is just as brilliant and fiery as I remember him from my childhood listening. The Mendelssohn and Bruch are just as fine as the Lalo. All three conductors (Eugene Ormandy, Bruno Walter, and John Barbirolli) are highly artistic collaborators.
The overall sound of this disc is anything but honest. First, the surface noise seems much louder than I have encountered on almost any other commercially issued transfer of old shellac discs. The Lalo is certainly much noisier than I remember it. And I can't imagine that my copy was cleaner than all the others.
Second, there is a practice fairly common nowadays when transferring 78s of leaving the original signal in mono but adding artificial reverberation in stereo. (You'll need to listen with a good pair of headphones to hear this for yourself.) When done discreetly, it does make the sound less boxy or constricted. That is not the case here. The reverberation is laid on so thickly that the original recording becomes indistinct and distant.
The engineer (credited as Roger Beardsley) also heavily equalizes the recordings. I rarely play a recording myself without employing equalization freely, but this EQ takes out so much of the harsh mid-range that one usually finds in pre-LP recordings that I found myself generously adding the mid-range back. The bass is also boosted well beyond what is necessary.
However, the prize-winning error occurs in the last movement of the Lalo, which in the original issue of the recording was split over two sides. In this transfer, the second side sounds as though it begins a beat too early (it is actually a full measure of a very fast, 3/8 tempo). You will hear Milstein's scale that ends the first side fading away into the ether as Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra seem to step on his toes. This, however, is not the fault of the musicians or anyone involved in the original recording but of Mr. Beardsley and the folks at Pearl who allowed this to be released. It is wrong, just plain wrong.
One good thing about these great, old recordings in the era of compact discs is that they are out of copyright. I know that there are other issues of these recordings. I'm sorry that I don't know another one that I can recommend personally. Consider yourself warned about THIS one.
