I own almost 90% of Meme. Landowska's recordings either on original 78rpm disc, I play them on a restored 1917 Victoria, or on cd. After buying the 78's of Landowska's first set of sonatas on eBay I decided to fill in my collection by purchasing this set. The 1940 2nd album of sonatas is impossible to find on 78! I was amazed at the second set; the recording of K490 with the anti-aircraft fire was very moving. One can almost feel a sense of defiance in her playing! I found K29 to be Landowska and Scarlatti at they're most joyful and daring-a true delight and highest form of Landowska's art. Also, although the sound quality has suffered somewhat, I found the C.E.P. Bach concerto amazing!--no Stunning!
Now for those out there who don't know, Meme. Landowska's Pleyel Harpsichord is not supposed to emulate an historical instrument and she has stated as much in her writings. Her instrument should be thought of more as the logical progression of what the harpsichord would have become if the Pianoforte had not supplanted it. Furthermore, a harpsichord and a piano are two ENTIREALY different instruments so they must be viewed separately in and of themselves. If one takes an open minded view when listening to Mem. Landowska it is easier to appreciate her work.

Buy this recording as your first introduction to Wanda Landowska. I also suggest her other works relased by Pearl as well as the comprihensive RCA 7 disc set. For a real treat buy Landowska: Uncommon Visionary if only for Footage of her 1953 interview and the intresting infromation provided by Denise Restout. All are available here at Amazon.com

I concur with the other review: Landowska and Scarlatti are fab-
ulous, as always. Relating to the second paragraph, however, I
gretly lament the fact that the Bach, Handel, and CPE Bach pieces are duplications. Bach and Handel are on other Pearl CD's--why did they not give us NON-duplicated material? The CPE
Bach is on Music and Arts (though if this is withdrawn, then
there is some excuse for it!)

Recordings of the keyboard sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti come and go. Reissues of those made in Paris in the 1930s by Wanda Landowska seem to be always with us. A recent reissue of 26 of them quickly earned a rarely-bestowed rosette in a prestigious CD guide, and the comment, "her playing has more character than that of most modern players put together; it is electrifying in its sheer vitality and imagination".

Now comes a 2 CD reissue of all Landowska's Scarlatti recordings from Pearl Records. It also includes some Bach and Handel items and a first release of a C P E Bach concerto, taken from a 1943 Toronto broadcast. 150 minutes in all.

Extensive notes by Landowska's friend Denise Restout provide scholarly, eye-witness accounts of Landowska at work. For the original issue of 20 of these sonatas, Landowska provided notes, assessments, and some imaginative programs, and these are also included here. Recording of a further 20 was completed in Paris in March 1940. As Denise Restout writes, the take of K 490 was kept "as a testimony of those dangerous times". Anti-aircraft gunfire can be heard, alerting citizens to put on gas masks and run for shelter. Landowska, deeply absorbed in her playing, never faltered. No one in the studio dared to move, and the four minute recording was completed. Unlike some other recordings Landowska made at this time in Paris, all of the second series of 20 Scarlatti sonatas survived the German occupation, and were eventually released in 1947. Hearing the series in 1947 for the first time, Landowska wrote to a friend, "I listened to it with total joy".

I feel sure 21st Century listeners will share her enjoyment.

What can you say about the way Landowska plays. She takes the simple Little Preludes, for example, and plays then in a way that can only be called magical. I only wish the recording had less surface noise, but if this is the only way we can hear Landowska today, then I can certainly live with it.

Collected on this well-filled CD are many Bach keyboard works Landowska recorded between 1928 and 1950. There is at least one great recordings here - Landowska's performance of the Toccata in D, BWV 912. Flanked by outer sections, in which the rhythmic impulse is positively erotic, the slow inner section demonstrates Landowska's ability to make a harpsichord express nobility and grandeur. She does it by subtle adjustment of note values, which makes her playing so memorable, and also by less subtle changes of registration on her recital-size harpsichord, which is not the way harpsichord players of today favor. Elsewhere there is perhaps too much use of 16 foot tone, also, and the use of a lute stop for producing staccato effects.

Many of the Landowska recordings here are hard to find in the CD market. Those who find them and listen to them will probably decide that everybody else's performances of these works sound lifeless by comparison.

The more I listen to other recordings - the more I like this one.
This old lady makes these little jewels sparkle.

An anecdote regarding this recording:
Some of the sonatas were recorded on Paris on March 1940, that is during the takeover of France in WWII. In some of the sonatas you can here in the background terrible explotions of artilery or antiaircraft guns. It is most evident at the Sonata in Re majeur K490.

I have had this recording for some years: it's an absolute joy each time I listen to it. I especially love the wide range of styles and moods in the movements from the Partita and the English Suites. Her play is always exciting. Another recording I love is her Scarlatti sonatas. Check it out !

The sound on this CD could be better, but it was made from an old vinyl recording that was digitized and enhanced as well as it could be. However, it is always a joy listening to Landowska play Bach. The 4-star rating is because of the recorded sound, not Landowska's performance, which, as always, is incomparable.

          5 out of 5 stars Wanda Landowska Plays Harpsichord Concertos.......2000-07-21

          It is good to have this collection of all the harpsichord concertos Wanda Landowska recorded in Paris in the late 1930s. Many of the items have been unavailable in recent years. All display Landowska's wonderful rhythmic vitality and alert musicianship. The excellent transfers are by Mark Obert-Thorn. Besides three concertos with orchestra, several smaller pieces for solo harpsichord by Handel and Haydn and included and also Landowska's unmatched account of Bach's Italian Concerto sounding brighter and clearer than it ever did on 78s. Somehow Mark Obert-Thorn has solved problems that always existed with the Italian Concerto recording. On the original 78s, the "run off" at the end of the first and third sides occurred before the sound of the harpsichord had died away, and there were pitch variations at the beginning of the second side. Now, at last, these original defects have been remedied. I strongly recommend this splendid CD. The timing is 78'33".
