Customer Reviews:
Jarvi makes this music exciting.......2007-06-13
While the Middle Ages Suite is interesting, the real gem on this disk is the Scenes de Ballet. In this score, Glazunov matches the pinnacle of ballet music writing that he reached in his ballet The Seasons (Raymonda isn't quite as effective a score -- and also far too long!). Many listeners will recognize some of the numbers in this piece, because they tend to crop up in various "new" ballet productions that are patched together by choreographers such as Peter Maartens and Mikhail Baryshnikov -- plus their occasional inclusion in the figure-skating routines presented by those great Russian and Ukrainian skaters every time the Winter Olympics comes around. Particularly effective are the Marionnettes movement, the Valse, and the final Polonaise. In this last number, Jarvi and the the orchestra pull out all the stops in a performance that is stately and rousing all at once. The slight hesitation as he holds back the final six repeated chords is absolute perfection -- what a way to round out the entire composition! After hearing this, you'll never be satisfied with any other performance.
No reviews, for shame............2001-11-09
This disc is a lot of fun. Both Glazunov scores are full of prime Russian romanticism. Think of Tchaikovsky's lush melodic sense jazzed up with Rimsky Korsakov's colorful orchestral palette and you'll get the idea.
The suite "From the Middle Ages" uses a few mock-archaisms to suggest the period, but really just wants to indulge in beautiful melodies. Check out the theme Rachmaninoff would have been proud of a few minutes into the first movement. Soaring strings and horns...what more could you want? The scherzo sees cossacks flying across the steppes while the troubador's serenade seems to inhabit a Middle Eastern bazaar. All is rounded out by a military finale which echoes Rimsky's March from Mlada.
The "Scene de ballet" contains a number of delightful dances ending with a Polonaise that is first cousin to the one Tchaikovsky wrote for "Eugene Onegin." Throw in a short musical delight from Liadov, and you have an hour of glorious music to wallow in. Profound no, but wonderful at every turn. If you like Russian romanticism, I guarantee you'll like this, particularly given Jarvi's rousing performance and the enthusiasm of his orchestra.

Silvestrov has the uncanny ability to concentrate your attention on music that's almost entirely slow paced and rendered at levels that rarely rise above pianissimo. Nowhere is that gift more evident that in his Silent Songs, a cycle of 24 songs for baritone and piano with texts drawn from a wide variety of poets from Pushkin, Shelley, and Mandelstam to the less familiar, at least to American audiences (Tyutchev and Zhukovsky). The songs have a deceptive simplicity; the texts illuminated by chaste, lovely, instantly appealing melodies, but the musical journeys of each song have an adventurous complexity that reveals even greater depths with repeated hearings. To say these performances are sympathetic would be a gross understatement. Although Sergey Yakovenko is asked to sing sotto voce throughout, and in a cruelly high tessitura for a baritone, he is superb, singing with a commitment and inwardness that draws the listener in. Pianist Ilya Scheps has Silvestrov's unique idiom in his fingers, and his postludes, some of them extensive, are summations of each song's meaning. Silvestrov himself accompanies Yakovenko in the Mandelstam cycle of four songs, a radiant close to a set of ethereal beauty. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
The most significant lieder cycle of the 20th century........2006-10-23
I've noticed that most significant lieder cycles are usually qualified as being "the [fill in the blank] version of Schubert's Winterreise." So Eisler's Hollywood Songbook becomes the American (or German, or Post-serialist, or even Socialist) Winterreise, and so on. In spite of how annoying this trend might be, I really think Silvestrov's Silent Songs deserves the title "The 20th-century Winterreise."
Why? No only is the cycle aching beautiful, but there lurk within it depths of what one might call extra-musical resonance as well. Silent Songs were composed after Silvestrov was expelled from the Soviet Composer's Union in 1974. His public career as a composer was over, and he turned to the ultimate "private" genre - the lied. What had once been the favoured parlour music becomes in Silvestrov's hands a kind of commentary on the nature of privacy itself - enforced privacy, in his case. Thus the emotions which each song here evokes run the range between amused introspection and despair, with lonliness colouring all. There are times when the feeling that these songs are truly "silent" - that we genuinely within someone's mind, listening to their every thought - becomes almost claustrophobic.
The engineers place the baritone's voice every so slightly forward, and what would normally sound like a mistake works to highlight the sense of uncomfortable closeness between the voice and the listener. This is ECM's finest release of Silvestrov's work, and that's saying a whole lot. Could we have the symphonies now, please?
intimate in the extreme..........2004-11-18
...and that can be a wonderful thing. In the case of this recording, it's one factor that makes it one of the most moving and beautiful I've heard in some time.
One reviewer (I can't recall where I read it, sorry...) said that it felt as if Yokovenko was singing right into the ear of the listener -- and that's a very apt characterization. The notes by the pianist in the booklet recall preparing to perform the songs on the concert stage for the first time, in Moscow, in 1985. He cites the preparation and the performance as one of the happiest moments of his artistic life -- it shows in his performance, as well as in that of baritone Sergey Yokovenko. The opportunity to present a program such as this, with the challenges and rewards that it embodies, is a rare one.
The texts are from a variety of poets -- Pushkin, Baratynsky, Sehvchenko, Mandelstam, Yesenin and other Russians, as well as Western icons Keats and Shelley. Whether Russian or Western in their source, the pieces here are universally beautiful -- the translations are provided in the booklet (as usual with ECM releases, the packaging is first-rate), but this music speaks directly to the soul of the listener. The emotion it carries needs no translation.
As I listen to this recording, I can easily imagine that the music is being performed for me alone -- but I'll be generous and share it with everyone. I can't recommend this CD highly enough -- heartfelt thanks to ECM for making it available. I encourage listeners who are unfamiliar with Silvestrov's work to check out some of the other ECM packages of his music, such as REQUIEM FOR LARISSA; LEGGIERO, PESANTE; and METAMUSIK, POSTLUDIUM.
Haunting, yet disturbingly comforting........2004-11-12
Silvestrov delivers power through the simplicity of piano and an introspectively shaky baritone. The message of the melodies preclude the need for translation--this music touches the heart and exemplifies the adage "music is the universal language". Yet, lugbrious and oftentimes languishing, the tenor of the recording is very melanacholy. But, the listener can somehow relate to the deep emotion of the composer. You can feel as if he speaks from his entire life and experience and expects closure. A few songs glimpse hope found in disaster (see track 9 on the first CD), but a complete attention to the entire recording renders satisfaction.
A fine mix of simplicity, genius, comfort, and haunting soul exposure. A great example of the depth of the Ukrainian spirit, as well as a tribute to their wonderful (and sometimes neglected)contribution to music.

No one has recorded more innovative Christmas anthologies than Andrew Parrott--and this disc is no exception. The Promise of Ages presents a collection of wonderful seasonal music arranged for women's voices (all arrangements were either made or sanctioned by the composers). The selection includes 15th-century English works such as "There is no rose of swych vertu"; traditional tunes both genuine ("Deck the Halls" in an 18th-century Welsh arrangement for harp) and fake (J. J. Niles's "I Wonder as I Wander" and "Lullay, thou little tiny child"); rollicking Irish dance tunes; and 20th-century works by such composers as Britten, Holst, and Judith Weir on traditional Christmas texts. One ingenious and effective suite combines Peter Maxwell Davies's "O magnum mysterium" and "The Fader of Heven" with the 14th-century "Song of the Nuns of Chester." All of the performances are exemplary, but Emily van Evera deserves special praise for her beautifully simple rendition of the Niles tunes. This collection can stand alongside Parrott's The Carol Album as the thinking person's Christmas albums. --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
Superb Choral Christmas Music.......2007-01-20
Andrew Parrott, and the Taverner Concert and Choir have done it again !
This is a superb collection of traditional music from the past, some of it familiar, some not so well known, all performed so very well.
Unique and special.......2007-01-09
Loved this album the entire thing. An English flavour.
Especially loved the Lo He Comes With Clouds Descending..
heart stirring. A great way to get into the Christmas
spirit and lift your heart.
Beautiful Harmonies and Vocalizations.......2000-12-13
Like another reviewer, I am thrilled at Lo! He Comes, as well as with the unfamiliar setting for Hark the Herald Angels Sing and the beautiful Sing We the Virgin Mary.
If you love beautiful vocalizations, especially rare soprano-alto harmonizations, this is the album for you.
A "top ten" Christmas album.......2000-11-13
If this album contained nothing but it's splendid rendition of Madan's Lo! He Comes, with Clouds Descending, the album would be worth owning. Fortunately, the entire album is a brillant mix of voices, instrumentals and performance styles; the resulting album can be played several times in successiion without becoming repetative - no small feat for a Christmas album.
The album ranges from the 13th century Nuns of Chester to contemporary composers - Judith Weir - or nearly comtemporary - Britten, Holst ... with excellent sequencing so that no piece seems out of place.
The instrumentation varies from the traditional organ with SATB choir to fiddle, flute, concertina and cello. This provides the variety that makes the album so listenable.
For traditional Christmas music this album is a must.

Discovering Alkan.......2001-11-06
Many years ago, as I understand the story, Ray Lewenthal was in New York City's Central Park when he was attacked by a mugger. He recovered, swore he'd never return to New York City ever, and moved to France to recouperate. While there, he made the happy discovery of some works by the eccentric French composer, Charles Valentin Alkan. The rest, as they say, is history.
My own discovery of Alkan happened when I was in college at the University of Vermont in the late 60's. A fellow music student had discovered a recording of Lewenthal playing Alkan and spent a great deal of time trying to convert the rest of us to a better understanding of Alkan. And so it was.
While I now delight in owning collections of Alkan's music performed by others, especially Hamelin, I believe that Lewenthal is the best of the bunch, and I couldn't be happier that these recordings have been reissued. I particularly wanted this one because it included Lewenthal's performance of the Hexameron, a work by Liszt, Thalberg, Czerny, Chopin ,etc., and is based on the principal that "anything you can play, I can play louder and faster." This whole CD, in fact, is pure fun from the opening of the eccentric Festival of Aesop to the final fiery conclusion of the Hexameron. Just keep telling yourself that a weird French composer who collected parrots can't be all bad.
The quintessential second-rate composer.......2001-02-04
The previous reviewer is right in everything except his or her rating. "Over-all enjoyable" is right. But it's not thoroughly enjoyable. The first couple of pieces ARE the best, and the Hexameron is interesting as a historical curiosity (and VERY hard to find on recordings), but after a couple of pieces, my mind starts wandering as it always does with this composer, no matter how talented the pianist who's playing him. Let's face it, folks: Alkan is a typically bombastic, boring 19th century romantic who just doesn't quite make it. And let's stop trying to promote a "revival." It just ain't gonna happen.

This disc was my introduction to Alkan.
From Alkan, I've gone to Busoni, Stevenson, Godowsky, Thalberg, and, most recently, Sorabji.
Being an Alkan-holic, I now have recordings from such pianists as Hamelin, Smith, Reach, Gibbons, McCallum, Feofanov, Martin, Ponti, Ringeissen, Ogdon, Petri, and Howard.
Coming full-circle, this disc is probably the best introduction to Alkan and Alkan-like-composition(s) and performance(s) out there. I would (and I do) recommend it to anybody and everybody, especially those who claim to be piano-philes, but somehow can't move beyond the Beethoven Moonlight Sonata.
The disc is more than affordable, the pianism is outstanding, the liner notes are detailed and anything but boring, the music is over-all very enjoyable, and the sound on the disc is spectacular, and increasingly so, in proportion to the volume at which it is played. -- You just can't go wrong with this disc.
Highlights: Track 1, track 2 (but most importantly the last last minute or so), track 7, and--most of the Hexameron, but in particular--track 19.
