A compact treasure.......2007-02-02
The piano works of Johannes Brahms, here recorded, represent in brief the best of Brahms middle period. Here one finds a man who has reached the maturity of his years; his vision directed more towards the contemplative than the assertive. At last he finds rest.

Customer Reviews:
5 papillons for Rasteven Isserlis--- this is heaven.......2003-07-23
Quite simply : this is the greatest recording of the greatest Cello concerto that the world has ever known. Isserlis knows Schumann. His Cello bleeds the Davidsbundler Master into every passion-note. His collaborators here seem infected by the Schumann/Isserlis heavenly inspiration. How good is it beyond being the best? Well it makes Ma's terrific version sound almost mechanical! Once in a great while there exists such profound intimacy between a great composer and an artist that eternal magic shakes the firmament. Such a wedding is rare and to be treasured when found. The insouciant inclusion of the gourgeous
adagio of Bargiel, a Florestan/Eusibius protege, plus a "few extras", shows that Isserlis is not only in touch completely with Schumann, but in a total harmony that transcendentally and ethereally touches the soul as each lovng bar caresses the senses.
Everyone knows the Concerto and other cello pieces so I won't bother with any analysis except to say that from Zwickau to Endenich RAS is smiling as , perhaps, he never did in his life. Isserlis knows Schumann. And , yes : this is the greatest recording of the greatest Cello Concerto that the world has ever known.

Customer Reviews:
An Admirable, Distinguished Collection Of Helene Grimaud's Earliest Recordings.......2007-05-25
This is truly a magnificient box set which demonstrates the early artistry of one of our finest contemporary pianists, the celebrated French pianist Helene Grimaud. It's an amazing collection not only because it was recorded when Grimaud was in her teens and early twenties when she was contracted to Denon, but more importantly, it demonstrates just how accomplished a musician she was at the start of a brilliant career. Her excellent playing of these works, especially of the Schumann and Brahms pieces, can hold their own against legendary competition from the likes of Claudio Arrau, Alfred Brendel and Murray Perahia, to name but a few of the most noteworthy interpreters - past and present - of these scores. However, I think the real gems are her spellbinding, exquisite performances of the Rachmaninov piano concerto and solo pieces, which I find as admirable as those I've heard from Vladimir Ashkenazy and Zoltan Kocsis, to name but a few. Those unfamiliar with the earliest phase of Helene Grimaud's distinguished career as a celebrated solo pianist will find this box set most rewarding.
Not just exceptional piano playing for a teen-ager - exceptional piano playing, period........2006-12-03
Brilliant Classics, a cheapo-cheapo label based in the Netherlands, has licensed from Denon the five recordings which launched Helene Grimaud's career, and marketed them at a price which makes them a steal. Miss Grimaud was 15 when she recorded the first of these five, the Rachmaninoff collection, in 1985, comprising his second piano sonata (in Horowitz' abridged edition) and a selection of Etude-Tableaux, plus two Preludes. She went on with Schumann (1st piano sonata in 1987, Kreisleriana in '88), Chopin (1st Ballade) and Liszt (Dante Sonata - both in '87), Brahms (second piano sonata in '88 followed by third piano sonata and Klavierstücke opus 118 in '91), and it was all topped-off, in 1992, by the concerto recordings: Ravel's G major and Rachmaninoff's 2nd, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted bu Jesus Lopez-Cobos. She then moved own to Erato, and now DG - and that was it for Denon.
So these discs span the 7 first years of her recording career, and it is not easy stuff that she tackled either. These are among the most daunting compositions of the piano repertoire, not only technically but also musically.
It would be unfair to Miss Grimaud to say that these are astounding recordings for a 15-to-22 year-old girl. These are astounding recordings, period. Throughout she displays unflinching muscularity, gripping rhythmic bite, magnificent control of the long line and the succession of variegated moods, from drama to lyricism, and admirable attention to the inside voicing and complexities of contrapuntal writing. All these recordings are not just fine visiting cards for a fledgling pianist - they are equal to the best. Brilliant as reissued the Denon discs as they were originally, short timings and all - the Rachmaninoff is 44 minutes long and the longest of the five is under the hour - but given the price and the excellence of piano playing it is still a bargain.
Miss Grimaud is now in the public's eye almost more for her infatuation with wolves than for her pianistic skills - and the Brilliant release surfs on the wave, albeit with some discretion, by the choice of its cover art. But judging from these recordings, one suspects that this kind of claptrap is almost detrimental to her cause. The wolf hype would easily lead you to think that some wise-axxed PR was trying to make up by that tacky attention-catcher for what her mere pianism was unable to achieve. Not so. Miss Grimaud's pianistic and musical gifts can amply stand on their own. Let the wolves howl, and hats off to the pianist.
Gorgeous Music - Great Value.......2004-07-31
This box set consists of 5 CDs of Helene Grimaud's beautiful piano playing. These CDs were originally released by Denon which has a great reputation for audio quality. Grimaud plays Rachmaninoff (Piano Concerto 2, Piano Sonata No.2 and others), Ravel (Piano Concerto in G major), Chopin (Ballade No. 1), Schumann (Piano Sonata No. 1 and Kreilserana), Liszt (Apres une lecture de Dante), Brahms (Piano Sonata Nos. 2 and 3 and Klavierstucke Op. 118).
A lot of great music beautifully played and recorded without breaking the bank.
Highly recommended.

Walter Gieseking was like a musical water faucet. You turned the knob, and out came the complete standard piano repertoire. When he was inspired, or truly engaged in a work, he was one of the foremost pianists of the 20th century. There are moments in this 1951 German Radio broadcast (the Sonata dates from wartime) that brush with genius, but the results sound like a great pianist either sightreading or playing without having practiced. One can understand errors made in the heat of passion and risk taking, such as the unbridled, messy, and absolutely thrilling Schumann First Sonata. But the casual mistakes in the Etudes Symphoniques stick out like sore thumbs. Gieseking archivists, however, will welcome these greatly improved transfers from a previous M&A issue. --Jed Distler

Outstanding Liszt Recital.......2005-03-08
Several months ago, I attended a private showing of an artist friend at which I met an attractive young lady named Nadejda Vlaeva who informed me she was a concert pianist. Curious to find out how well she played, I noticed a baby grand piano in the living room and asked the hostess if she would allow the young lady to play. She whole-heartedly approved of the idea and Ms. Vlaeva agreed to perform. All were spellbound with her beautiful touch and mature interpretation of the two pieces she played. The second, the Liszt "Un Sospiro" is contained in this lovely record of Liszt compositions. Alan Walker an expert on Franz Liszt and author of the three-volume, prize-winning biography writes in the jacket of this album: " [Vlaeva] has a shining technique. Refinement, delicacy and nuance, are hallmarks of her playing; but she can also call on reserves when the music demands it. In brief, she is a musical aristocrat." I fully agree with Walker when he continues: " She stands out as one of the more promising pianists of her generation, a sincere and polished artist of rare sensitivity."
Personally, Liszt is not one of my favorite composers, but the way Ms. Vlaeva interprets his music, it is just heavenly. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria she began playing the piano at the age of five and after graduating from the Sofia Academy of Music, moved to the Netherlands and studied with the late Lazar Berman (one of my favorite pianists) among others. Thankfully, she currently resides in New York City. She has a website www.nadejdavlaeva.com where one can find her performance schedule. Try and see her. In the meantime enjoy this spectacular recording.

Mikhail Pletnev is a phenomenal pianist. His technique is truly stunning and as effortless as brushing a feather-duster across the keyboard. His tone is beguilingly beautiful, smooth as silk and velvet; he seems to caress the keys, coaxing from them entire layers of sonorities and an endless variety of colors, nuances and dynamics. Gold Medalist at the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, his repertoire ranges far and wide; his award-winning recordings include music by Scarlatti, C.P.E. Bach, Grieg, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and, being a conductor and composer as well, his own works and transcriptions. Musically, he must be one of the most individualistic and original performers before the public. This disc shows that Schumann, the quintessential romantic, has found a kindred spirit, but one whose approach is very much his own. Pletnev does not hesitate to bring out changes of mood, dynamics and character with quite drastic shifts of tempo, heralded by big ritardandos and long pauses. Thus, his playing is extraordinarily free, yet simple, lesiurely, comfortable and without fuss. And though all the liberties are obviously carefully thought out (and might at times seem a bit excessive), they have an almost improvisatory spontaneity that gives them a feeling of being freshly experienced, as if he were making everything up on the spot. He underlines the contrasts between the variations of the Symphonic Etudes (and replaces a variation of the work's later, standard version with two from the earlier one); the Fantasie is truly fantastic, rhapsodic, heroic, passionate, deeply felt. Of the five rather unfamiliar "Album Leaves" (or Colored Leaves), four are slow and singing, one is a wispy witches' dance, and the Arabesque is all tenderness, ardor and charm. --Edith Eisler

Pletnev is always different.......2006-08-03
Pletnev is a great pianist. But he is different from others. His approach to Chopin and Schumann is a very personal one, but always natural, believable, suitable. He never strikes the piano, he doesn't need to, because he owns an extensive sound and nuance range. His piannissimi are unique.
unworthy issue.......2006-05-27
There seems to be an "effortless" work in playing these pieces but that doesn't make them shine at all. Although Pletnev's legato is clean he can't rely on harmony and it sounds pretty much al the same. This particular SACD sound isn't the best also.

These are live recordings from the mid to late '70s. Horowitz' legendary technique may be less than pristine, but his mercurial temperament burns brighter than ever. He melds Schumann's unwieldy, difficult to sustain Concerto Without Orchestra (Sonata #3) into a coherent whole, with the famous third movement variations providing lyrical relief from its turbulent surroundings. Horowitz probes the inspired but diffuse Humoreske for all its expressive potential, and finds hidden drama in the shorter works. The brightly-voiced piano Horowitz favored at this time is harsh in the higher register, although his trademark booming basses hit you like a kick in the belly. Horowitz admirers need no urging to acquire this disc. --Jed Distler
Amazon.com
As much as I may admire Vladimir Horowitz's pianism, I often don't find his interpretations illuminating. The Schumann Sonata heard here, though, is one of Horowitz's greatest interpretations on records. He seems to identify completely with the music, pulling its diverse aspects together with great emotional conviction and giving us the greatest performance of the piece I have ever heard. It's all the more puzzling, then, that he plays the Humoreske with such a lack of conviction, concentrating entirely on its pianistic aspects and neglecting its musical innovations. Nor do I like the way he plays the shorter pieces. But this disc is worth its moderate price for the Sonata. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
A Problematic Horowitz CD.......2000-04-03
This is a seriously flawed CD issue, through no fault of Vladimir Horowitz.
The Schumann Sonata in F minor consists entirely of outakes (listening to the original LP, which I have, confirms this) and is not what Horowitz authorized for release. The performance is overdriven, mannered, and riddled with many mistakes.
The Humoreske, recorded in 1979, is another story. This is some of Horowitz' finest Schumann. Horowitz masterfully molds Schumann's varied moods, or "humors" and builds them into a coherent whole. This performance has drawn the praise of such disparate interpreters and Pollini and Horszowski.
The Nachstucke and Fantasiestucke were recorded in 1980, and the piano is voiced a bit less brightly here than in the other pieces. The performances are fine, but not on quite the exalted level of the Humoreske.
All of these recordings were assembled from concert performances taped from 1976-1980. The sound throughout the disc is rather hard and airless, which is pretty much the kind of sound RCA was giving all their artists at the time. Remastering has improved the sonic picture somewhat, but this is no match for the fine recordings DG made of this artist. RCA should thouroughly remaster and repackage ALL of the Horowitz recordings and give him the red carpet treatment they recently gave Arthur Rubinstein.
