Excellent program of delightful French music.......2003-10-02

I thought that this disc was excellent. This was my first Poulenc CD and I have to say that Poulenc is a fascinating composer. The Piano Concerto is quite lovely. I really enjoyed the Organ Concerto; the balance between orchestra and organ was excellent. The two-piano concerto had drive and was exciting throughout. The Concert Champetre was interesting for its use of the harpsichord, a instrument which really has its home in baroque music. I have only one problem with this disc. I think that the sound could be better. On the Concert Champetre, it is difficult to hear the harpsichord sometimes. The sound on the two-piano concerto is sufficient, but one could wish for even better sound. Other than that quibble, I thought the disc was great. It is difficult to find one CD set with this many different pieces by Poulenc, so it's welcomed. Four stars.

A great collection of Poulenc's work!.......1998-11-15

This double-Cd set is a wonderful collection of work by the French composer. It has both of the remarkable piano concertos, the delightful Organ concerto, and the out-of-the-ordinary harpsichord concerto. A grand overview of this remarkable composer's incredible range and talent. For someone who was looking for a good place to start with Poulenc, this Cd is highly reccommendable. I was very impressed with this release!

Messiaen's massively entertaining and funky Turanalila Symphony established his reputation as a modern master at a stroke. The title is Sanskrit, and means something like "Cosmic Love-Death-Play of the Universe"--and the music sure lives up to this description. In ten movements, with major solo parts for piano and an electronic instrument called an Ondes Martenot (it sounds like one of the those wailing synthesizers in horror movie flicks), the music alternates luscious, Hollywoodesque love music with moments of total insanity. It's not for the timid, but it's also hugely entertaining. Poulenc's two Concertos are also hugely entertaining, but in a more conventional way. Performances are uniformly outstanding, and the sonics are super. Super sonics-- get it? Never mind. --David Hurwitz

Having twice heard the piece performed live, by the LSO in London and the Orchestre de Lyon in Edinburgh, I highly recommend this recording which captures the intensity and immediacy of a live performance.
Messiaen's music is exquisite!

One of the most important achievements in the XX century was the re launching and rediscovery of the long lost world of 17th and 18th century music and undoubtedly Wanda Landowska was one of the main artistic figures among other no less important ones such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Susanne Lautenbacher or Julian Bream; names as the well reminded Paul Sacher, Andrew Parrot, Trevor Pinnock, and great ensembles as Zagreb's soloists, The English Chamber Orchestra, The Collegium Aureum, the unforgettable contribution made by Karl Haas in the Fifties, The Academy of St. Martin in the fields, I musici among a huge list.

This is a collector item, not only by the astonishing and unerring performances of Wanda but the flaming vehemence and mercurial passion she plays. She makes Mozart sounds sublime and cosmic at unequaled heights. I guess Mozart `s piano concerto No. 13 may be the best available version ever made in the musical history, without restrictions of any sort; Landowska a vehement energy and besides, an inexhaustible dynamism around the whole spirit of this score; she makes it important and transcendental. The K. 482 is excellent; as well as the rest of the double CD.

When you decide acquire this album (as I did it in 1997) you will have made a wise choice. It a peerless musical gem.

Landowska: Visionary and Interpreter.......2002-04-07

Landowska, Mother of the Early Music Revival, Honoured Musicologist, a Musician in every sense of the term - this is a part of her testimony to the history of art.

This CD is the first volume of a series documenting Wanda Landowska's concert recordings, featuring such Landowska specialties as Mozart Piano Concertos No. 13 and 24 (the most beautiful recordings I've heard of either concerto), C.P.E. Bach Harpsichord Concerto in D (from a CBC Broadcast), Poulenc's Concert Champetre, and a Haendel Concerto in B-flat (an arrangement of a famous Harp Concerto).

Do not expect top-notch recording techniques (after all, these are mono recordings from the 1940s), and expect a few stray notes here and there. But that's not the point. The point is that no harpsichordist since Landowska has possessed her magic or spark at the instrument. And her piano performances of Mozart - simply amazing. They sound contented and good-humoured, but possess an electricity that is beyond words.

By the way, you should know by now that Landowska's Pleyel Harpsichord was as inauthentic and un-period as they come, and the touch was horrible. But it is a great testament to this performer that she (and Rafael Puyana) was the only person able to bring a great sound from that instrument - and what music she made with it!
