Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

4 out of 5 stars classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

4 out of 5 stars Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A valuable bargain-priced guide to this edgy Swiss.......2004-05-16

Nicholas Deutsch's review, elsewhere on Amazon.com, seems a thoroughly judicious assessment: though I find Cachemaille's black-marble bass-baritone timbre more impressive (at all volume levels) than he does, and the CONCERTO's invention less so. Armin Jordan's direction is as meticulous in that piece, and displays as keen a judgement of tonal balance, as always. Those who know the work merely from Ernest Ansermet's boisterous and, in all conscience, fairly unkempt early-stereo version will be surprised to discover how much fine detail comes through here. I just wish the music itself - dating from 1949 - did not sound so often like a tired re-run of the mighty 1945 PETITE SYMPHONIE CONCERTANTE, although the bell-like tolling of the CONCERTO's central funeral march represents Martin near his best, and the finale's beery trumpet flourishes indicate a sardonic amusement not often associated with this edgy Swiss.

Had I been laying down the law in the present CD's production process I should have jettisoned the CONCERTO in favor of POLYPTIQUE, Martin's jolting meditation (for solo violin and string orchestra) on Christ's Passion. This Spaetlese, which seems to acquire a new force and strength in the age of Mel Gibson, dates from 1973; it confirms that age did not weary the 83-year-old Martin, nor custom stale his considerable - if not exactly infinite - variety. Still, at least we have here the ever-haunting JEDERMANN MONOLOGUES, some of the most somber inspirations that vocal music of the last 100 years can show, but also some of the most noble. They breathe the same air as Brahms's FOUR SERIOUS SONGS, though this air has understandably become more oppressive with the horrors of the 20th century, horrors which impinged with particular sharpness upon Martin's icily yet desperately religious temperament.

As for the PSC itself, Jordan's interpretation is more sober and less dramatic than some; it lacks the venomous malice that older conductors have conveyed, and has a statuesque quality that I have ended up rather relishing, with attention paid to all sorts of string filigree that more violent performances overlook altogether. Good if needlessly brief annotations, full JEDERMANN texts, expert engineering (the PSC notoriously abounds in balance problems, tackled here with above-average skill), and a scarcely believable bargain price: you cannot go seriously wrong with this reissue.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Modern Versions of 3 Outstanding Martin Works.......2004-01-28

The 3 works here, 2 for orchestra & one for baritone & orchestra, are among the finest by the great Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974). They all date from the 1940s, when - after many years of hard work - he had finally achieved his highly individual mature style, particularly in matters of harmony. His most famous work, the "Petite Symphonie Concertante" for the unique combination of harp, harpsichord, piano & double string orchestra, remains as fresh & exhilarating as the day it was first performed; the "Concerto for 7 Wind Instruments" never ceases to delight in the ingenious, expressive ways Martin uses his soloists, separately & in various combinations. The "Six Monologues from 'Everyman'" - settings for voice & orchestra of excerpts from Hugo von Hofmannsthal's modern version of the medieval religious drama - is one of the 20th century's most moving song cycles, & has been performed and/or recorded by numerous well-known (bass-)baritones, including Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Heinz Rehfuss (both with Martin), Theo Adam, Jose van Dam, David Wilson-Johnson, Matthias Goerne, Hakan Hagegard & Thomas Quasthoff; there is a searing recent recording of the original piano version by Roman Trekel on Berlin Classics.
These performances are expertly conducted by Armin Jordan, very well-played & recorded; I think they'll hold up well over time. The "Petite Symphonie Concertante" is the pick of the lot - nice to have Christiane Jacottet, who once recorded Martin's Harpsichord Concerto under the composer, as one of the soloists - : shrewdly paced & with exceptionally well-judged recording balance. Some of the solo parts in the Concerto have been played with more assertive sense of character elsewhere, but the teamwork here is just fine, & again Jordan judges the "build" of the piece expertly. He also resists the temptation of equating "spiritual" with "slow" in the Monologues - not all conductors do. My only reservations have to do with baritone Gilles Cachemaille. He certainly sings beautifully & with great sincerity, but (as elsewhere) I find his voice when at "average" volume oddly inexpressive, if pleasant in timbre; as soon as the line rises in pitch & volume the performance comes to life. But if this is not the most emotionally heart-piercing version of the piece, it is still very good. And overall, if you're looking for good modern versions of these 3 works, or are just curious about Martin's music, this is a real bargain. (Note: These performances were previously issued on Cascavelle, at a considerably higher price. But although this is a "bargain" re-issue, it still comes with full text & translation for the song cycle - thanks, Warner Classics!)

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06

The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.

As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.

However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.

But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.

My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.

Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Martin's Best Works on One CD.......2003-05-27

This CD is probably the best introduction to the work of Swiss composer Frank Martin that you can ever find. The Petite Symphonie Concertante is one of the great masterpieces of mid 20th century music. The Violin Concerto is exquisite. In Terra Pax is a deeply moving choral work, the Concerto for Seven Instruments is strong and the Etudes are quite interesting. And at the price, this is not one to pass up at all.

Martin is a fascinating amalgam of influences. On the surface his music seems perched between the French neoclassicists and the Viennese School. The melos of the works is steeped in a densely chromatic style with considerable debt to 12 tone music, and yet the harmonic world is often triadic, and almost always tonal. And Martin has an ear for sonority that is distinctly French. But under these surface influences lies a much deeper connection with Bach, Haydn and Mozart. Martin is perhaps one of the most classic of neo-classicists. And he wears his influence proudly without ever sounding tired or derivative.

The Concerto for Seven Instruments, Percussion and Strings is a modern take on the concerto grosso and as such shows its baroque roots rather well. The first movement is tense, the second sustained and lyrical and the work builds to an exciting conclusion. The string etudes are equally fine, though not particularly deeply moving. The Petite Symphonie Concertante is the stunner of this group. Written for strings with a continuo of piano, harp and harpsichord, the piece sounds like a modernization of the Fifth Brandenburg. Martin's orchestral ear is marvelous in the piece. Particularly stunning is the deeply felt slow movement. Melodies are exposed by each of the continuo instruments while being accompanied by strummed triads on one of the other instruments. The movement builds beautifully and finds ultimate release in the driving finale.

The Violin concerto is a wonderful work as well. It features a dark and lugubrious first movement, another shining slow movement, and a virtuoso finale. The final work on the disc, In Terra Pax, was written to celebrate the secession of hostilities after the Second World War. The texts consist of prophetic passages from the Old Testament which transition to uplifting, hopeful New Testament passages. It is a wonderful choral work and deserves a place in the repertoire.

Performance and sound on this CD is excellent. Ansermet was the composer's chief support and champion so the interpretations have the ring of authority. And at a twofer price, this should be a no-brain decision. Martin's music is modern and rigorous, but without tears. A highly recommended disc.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Works, Classic Performances, Bargain Price.......2000-06-10

This set brings together 6 of Frank Martin's most beautiful works of the 1940s and 50s, nearly 21/2 hours of some of the finest, most directly communicative music of the past century. There are 5 orchestral works plus his 1st great oratorio, In Terra Pax, composed (on New Testament texts) to celebrate the end of World War II. All but 1 of the performances are under the direction of his great champion, Ernest Ansermet; the 6th, the 1952 string orchestra version of the 1944 Passacaglia for organ, is conducted by its dedicatee, Karl Muenchinger. These are classic versions in every sense. Don't hesitate because 3 of the recordings are in mono: this "basic" collection is a great place to begin finding out why Martin's music is so beloved and admired by those who know it. (If you want a stereo version of his most famous work, the Petite Symphonie Concertante - for harp, harpsichord & piano with double string orchestra - try Edmond de Stoutz's 1992 one on Gallo CD-713, coupled with the finest recent version of Martin's late masterpiece Polyptyque & the early, charmingly wistful Pavane couleur du temps.) Excellent notes, full French-English text for In Terra Pax. Thank you, Decca/London, for keeping this in the catalogue.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite and mysterious works by a great composer.......2000-06-05

I love the music of the Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974). He has a distinctive musical personality and he, more than anyone I know, has been able to bring together the orchestral textures of impressionism, the rythmic alertness of Stravinsky and some of the lessons of atonality in a seamless fashion. The Petite Symphonie Concertante, for the unholy combination of harpsichord and harp, is well known, but he also composed a beautiful Requiem, a Mass for Double Choir (available in a beautiful recording on Hyperion), a fascinating song cycle called Six Monologues for Everyman, and some exquisite orchestral works, such as the Concerto for 7 Wind Instruments, his Etudes for Orchestra, and the intensely beautiful Polyptique for violin solo and two string orchestras--a work from the 70s which was wonderfully recorded by DG in 1992, in expressive and perfect performances by Thierry Fischer and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and now appears to be out of print. Like Janacek, Martin is a composer who found his own language late in life and seemed to grow younger the older he got. Among his last works was "Poemes de la mort", a setting of ballades by Villon for three tenors and three electric guitars! His music is intellectualy satisfying, to say the least. His shorter works are often paired with those by Honegger and Martinu's. This very good anthology contains the first recording of the Petite Symphonie Concertante conducted by Ernest Ansermet, and the beautiful Violin Concerto performed by Schneiderhan, in what must be considered a definitive performance (it has not been matched since), among other works. Martin was a very religious, very spiritual man, and even his instrumental works evoke a sense of mystery and spiritual devotion. This set deserves five stars for the quality of the works and the performances, but prospective buyers should know that these are all recordings from the 50's and 60's, and some concessions must be made for the quality of the sound, particularly for the Petite Symphonie Concertante, recorded in 1951.

Bachiana is a sterling collection of concertos by Bach's sons. The most substantial work on this well-filled disc is C.P.E. Bach's Concerto for Harpsichord and Fortepiano from 1788, the year of his death. The two instruments are treated as equals, and the orchestra plays a significant role as well. The first movement offers a unique combination of drama (especially in the forceful orchestral interjections) and piquant wit, also characteristic of the Presto finale. Those movements sandwich a grave Larghetto of austere beauty. It's a deeply personal, perhaps valedictory, work. The other selections have plenty of appeal, too. J.C. Bach's Sinfonia Concertante is a charming work of deceptive lightness. W.F.E. Bach's Flute Concerto opens with a first movement featuring complex textures and moves on to a gently lovely Largo and a delightful Vivace finale. The least known of these four Bachs, J.C.F., contributes a fascinating Concerto for Fortepiano and Viola, notable for fetching interplay between the instruments and the integrated orchestral role. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff from the Bach Boys.......2003-11-11

Let's face it. There have been many of these "Sons of Bach" albums, and while they introduce us to the wealth of talent in the Bach family, they often end up just underscoring by how much Johann Sebastian's talent outstripped that of the rest of the clan. I can't say you'll come away from this disc with a new appreciation of Bach's prolific progeny, but I will be surprised if you don't find this is one of the most enjoyable and successful such collections to come along. First, the music. As the notes to this recording point out, Wilhelm Friedemann's concerto is a pretty exciting recent scholarly discovery. I doubt, as the notes suggest, that it has any claim to rival in popularity J. S.'s Suite in B Minor, but I will say this: it is just about the equal of C. P. E. Bach's well-known and admired concertos, with a slow movement that has the tender melodiousness of the best of J. C. Bach, while the outer movements have some of the clever harmonic-melodic twists and turns that C. P. E. is famous for.

Unfortunately, the lone representative here from J. C. is attractive and diverting but not one of his best works. It sounds, as all the lesser pieces by this composer sound, like Mozart without genius. There is better J. C. Bach music around.

But then the work by J. Ch. F. Bach, the least remembered of the Bach sons, is well above what I have heard from him in the past. The Concerto for Fortepiano and Viola is a novel concept, and it is approached with imagination by J. Ch. F. The quality of invention is well sustained in this big work--at almost 26 minutes by far the most substantial composition on the disc. I liked especially the opening movement marked allegro con brio, a successful blend of fire and lyricism. While it is the most striking movement, the others have their moments of beauty and drama too; overall, this is a concerto of great interest.

Last and best is the valedictory concerto of C. P. E. Bach, certainly the greatest of J. S.'s sons. The Concerto for Harpsichord and Fortepiano is an off-beat masterwork in which C. P. E. bids farewell to the harpsichord by playing it off against its young cousin the fortepiano, now in the ascendancy. The concerto is a wonderful exploration of the sonorities of both instruments, and if they were rivals in the music world, here they are instead civilized conversationalists. If you enjoy C. P. E. Bach's strange harmonic explorations and melodies that turn on a dime, here they are in extremely enjoyable abundance. The last movement is a joyous, youthful romp, remarkable coming from the 70-something C. P. E.

If the music is fine, the music making is extraordinary. Musica Antiqua and Goebel always have novel things to say about the novelties they profer, and these performances are no exception. The playing is wonderfully fluid, dramatic when it needs to be (I always love the horns), plangent and tender when that is called for.

Excellent sound rounds out the package: it's close but atmospheric, with great detail as well as timbral realism. I highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Interesthing evolution to the romantic period.......2003-03-14

After an anthology of the ascendants of J.S.B., Goebel is concernerd about his four sons. The most convincing moment of this Cd is the "Symphonie concertante pour violon et violoncelle", which is elegant and refined. A big surprise: "Le Concerto pour flûte" of Wilhelm Frieedemann is astonishing. It is full of strenght ! The flautist,Verena Fischer,is radiant. The curious concerto of Johann Christoph Friedrich, for " hammerflügel, alto and orchestra" is strange and beautiful. You must hear Robert Hill (formidable at the hammerflügel) hold a dialogue with Reinhard Goebel (alto). This is delightful! The "Concerto pour pianoforte, clavecin et orchestre" of Carl Philipp Emmanuel is the most known piece of this CD. Goebel and his brilliant soloist are palying with a frenzy spirit ! Very stimulating CD !

The sound is deep and delicious ! Archiv does it again. Goebel too.

The Third Symphony is a setting of verses from a medieval Persian mystic and poet, and it's full of mysterious, exotic sounds and luscious orchestral textures. In fact, the music closely resembles similar "cosmic" creations by Scriabin (The Poem of Ecstasy, or Prometheus, the Poem of Fire), and if you're into that sort of thing, you'll love this symphony. The Fourth Symphony is actually a concerto for piano and orchestra, and it has become one of the composer's most popular works. Artur Rubinstein recorded it, but unfortunately only in mono sound. If you like Prokofiev, then you'll love this. The only drawback to this recording is that the sung texts aren't included, but it doesn't much matter in music where atmosphere in everything. --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars Good Performances of Early 20th Century Polish Music.......2003-01-23

For many people the history of Polish music begins and ends with Chopin. For those of more avant-garde tastes, the country goes underground musically for over 100 years, only to reemerge in the late 50s with Lutaslowski and Penderecki. But this is to underestimate many great composers in the country in between, and perhaps the greatest of these undervalued composers is Szymanoski.

Szymanoski began his career as a late romantic under the influence of Strauss and Wagner. This period is represented on this disc by the Concert Overture. On the surface the work is very Straussian, however there are hints of the more adventurous composer to come in the tensely dissonant lines of the music. If Szymanowski had remained in this style, he would be an interesting, if minor late-romantic. But fortunately, he fell under the influence of more advanced music.

The Symphony No. 3 is the crowning acheivement of Szymanowski's second period. This period shows influences of Scriabin, Debussy and Busoni in the extended tonality. Though Szymanoski's music is never just an assembly of influences. This symphony is a setting for chorus, tenor soloist and orchestra of poems by the Sufi poet Rumi. Szymanoski prooves a master of the exotic, creating an atmophere which is spiritual, sensual, but not the least deriviative or condescending of the East. This is a truly lovely early 20th century work.

The Symphony No 4 comes from the composer's last period. In it, Symanowski retreated from his more "atonal" style and enriched his music with Polish folk music. The piece is really almost a Piano Concerto and resembles nothing so much as the Bartok Third Concerto, though it was written some 15 years before the Hungarian master's great creation. The piece is immediately attractive, but with greater depth each time you listen to it.

Performances on this disc are good, but leave a little to be desired. Some of the vocal work from the tenor on the Symphony No. 3 is shakey and some of the ensemble of the orchestra sloppy in the Sinfonia Concertante. None of this is enough to mar the disc completely, but there are versions out there 9particularly Rodinski's) that I much prefer. If you can find them, they are better choices. However, if you are not sure if you will like Szymanowski, the Naxos price is hard to beat!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolute Delight.......2006-08-09

This is one of the best recorded CDs I have heard. After listening to this you would feel that Charpentier undoubtedly ranks among the best of baroque composers--with a little twist of his own in his compositions. The first and last pieces in this CD have beautiful Timpani accompanyment with trumptet, violin and flute making some of the incredible and cute cascading that is perky and extremely delightful. In particular, the last piece (26, fanfare) has the thunderous underscoring of timpani. On a review elsewhere someone wrote that this piece has a "rowdy" tone to it--I would say that it is a beautiful and "Pleasantly-Classical-Rowdy" piece.

The bonus CD that comes within this package contains some selected pieces from other CDs made by Music Antiqua Koln and is equally superb. In particular, the performance of Goebel's group for the Easter Oratoria of JS Bach (BWV 249 Sinfonia) deserves superlative praises. WOW! WOW! WOW!--adinfinitum. I could feel the sincererity, dedication and the sheer emotional involvement that seems to come out as you follow each instrument's tonal quality, depth and synchronization, is something that I have never felt in listening to the other recordings that I have listened to, and will probably never see in any group other than Goebel's. There seems to be a sense of strong reverence toward the composer which is built up by the troupe as they play the pieces.

Dear Goebel and his troupe: Many roses from me for making a wonderful performance and recording.

If you are a lover of Bach, Vivaldi, Telemann, Heinichen, Handel then you will enjoy these CDs very much.

5 out of 5 stars Lost and Found.......2004-11-23

Very little is known about Charpentier's life (1643-1704). The main source of information is an obscure rival composer named de Brossard. According to de Brossard, Charpentier was originally from Paris but studied music in Rome under the composer Carissimi. In 1696 he beat out de Brossard for the post of choirmaster at the Sainte Chapelle Cathedral in Paris, where he remained until his death in 1704. As Goebels writes in the album liner notes, there are several reasons for Charpentier's neglect as a composer. First, he has traditionally been relegated to that band of other composers who were "Lully's imitators". Secondly, his music is "not easy listening, being neither instantly memorable nor readily digestible. Rather it is highly demanding and not always accessible to every listener from the outset." However, it is related that even de Brossard paid tribute to him, praising him as the "most profound and learned of modern composers."

Even if you love baroque music, gaining an appreciation of this music will take some time. But once you have put forth the effort, and assuming you do enjoy period baroque, you will not want to remove this disc from your changer, it is so amazingly good, no small thanks to Goebel and the Musica Antiqua Koln. And if that's not recommendation enough, included in this album is a bonus disc which celebrates 25 years of Musica Antiqua Koln on the Archiv Produktion label. Here's what's included on that disc: Heinichen's Concerto in F major, J.S. Bach's Suite in B minor, J.C. Bach's Andante de Molto, Handel's Haec est Regina virginum, J.S. Bach's Sinfonia from the Concerto in D after BVW 249, Telemann's Concerto for three oboes, three violins and basso continuo in B-flat major, G.C. Bach's Cantata `Siehe, wie fein und lieblich' (This is an astonishingly beautiful piece!), Vivaldi's "La Follia", and lastly Bach's Third Brandenburg Concerto.

The Concerto de Quebec was composed by Andre Matieu and after hearing it live at Carnegie Hall, maestro Sergei Rachmaninoff went as far as declaring Mathieu his true successor. It is a very exciting work in which the style could certainly be considered similar to the composer's admirer: filled with romance and passion!

Unfortunately, like Tausig, Lipatti, and the many before him, Mathieu left us much too soon.

Cheery remastering and faultless oboe playing by de Lancie contribute mightily to this disc. The Strauss is understated and succeeds because of it. If you're not familiar with it, get this recording for Francaix' 'L'Horloge de Flore' (The Flower Clock) -- a little miracle of 20th cent. music, a score so French and so free. It has a sweet and brilliant taste -- music 'sans souci!' De Lancie's is arguably the best recorded version, and Previn's a perfect friend in this music. You'll wonder how it is you never heard this contagious little oboe concerto -- a concerto in chamber music form! It's a perfect jewel of a piece, and followed by a compelling restrained 'Gymnopodie', little's left but bliss. De Lancie's playing is free and unaffected, he pushes up against the orchestra and brings it along, Previn dances, the whole marvelous edifice aloft passes by carefree and wonderful. 'L'Horloge de Flore' is pure musical delight to treasure. Ideas about the restoration of earlier recordings as a medium of modern expression are vindicated by art of this kind. Couldn't be more satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars Truly First Class........2002-10-01

This is the reissue by Boston Records of one of my all-time favourite oboe CDs. During his long and distinguished career (over 30 years) with the Philadelphia Orchestra, John de Lancie became world famous and took part in many great recordings; still this is his only solo album. Aside from its historical value (the oboist documenting, after 40 years, the concerto he had inspired Strauss to write), this is a wonderful CD all around. John de Lancie, who passed away last May at age 80, was 65 when he recorded the newly-remastered Strauss, and his performance has the kind of gentleness and quiet dignity that only comes with maturity. He avoids the trap of sentimentality, opting instead, as always, for refinement and elegance, tinged in places with a hint of melancholy that can be quite moving.

All the other pieces were recorded back in the sixties with Andre Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra. De Lancie is at his very best, seemingly determined to show us just about every possible mood and nuance that can be expressed by the oboe... and succeeding! "L'Horloge de flore" in particular, a suite of seven short movements played without interruption and evoking the flowers that bloom at different times of the day, is a gem of charm and grace, admirably suited to de Lancie's special brand of magic.

All around, it is a wonderful CD with great sound quality, a must-have for anyone who enjoys the oboe, and we can thank Boston Records for making it available again for years to come.

P.S.: By the way, I highly recommend the 4 Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet CDs, also featuring de Lancie, released under the same label: a class act if there ever was one!
