To play old classic, especially the guitar classic, in a new way is highly difficult task. None the less, Norbert Craft has found absolutely new, as it appears to me, intonations in Villa Lobos quitar music, especially in the studies. The technique is beyond reproach. Excellent performance!

This music is awesome to listen to and to play. I bought it because it has all the songs from Heitor's guitar sheet music compilation "Villa-Lobos Solo Guitar: Heitor Villa-Lobos Collected Works for Solo Guitar".

Norbert Kraft is a very skilled guitarist. He puts his own interpretation into the music, which I like a lot. The recording is very good.

Kraft's performance on this album is rushed, mechanical, and emotionally shallow. It's like listening to a MIDI sequencer -- every note is perfect, but somehow Kraft manages to lose the music.

This CD is a treat in that you get all 23 guitar solos on one CD played to perfection by Norbert Kraft. I found the pieces to be firmly grounded in South American folk music, possibly even Latino street music, with just a touch of the influence of jazz. The works are sometimes complex and at others almost minimal. Kraft plays with technically perfect style, clean and exact, with every note in place. I find that this CD is also non-intrusive when reading or working at home.

A Classical guitarist and collector of the genre, I can only rave about this cd. I purchased several of these cd's for my close friends and family. The two Paganini pieces are awsome.
Hopefully, Denon will produce more of the same. This time they supply the names of their artists. Well Done! Bravo!

I've owned this disc from its original 1993 issue since shortly after it came out; now it is available on Hyperion's budget label, Helios. I had never heard of the Hungarian pianist Livia Rév, but she quickly became a favorite and I've since bought everything of hers I could find. I did not originally think I would be playing this collection of miniatures very often. Indeed, I think I got the CD primarily because I wanted to hear the unfamiliar Bartók and Jolivet pieces. I soon found that I reached for this disc often and here it is some fourteen years later and I still do. (In fact, the reason I came here to Amazon today to write this brief review is that I had once again listened to the disc last night and was charmed all over again.)

None of the music here is particularly virtuosic. But it is all beautiful. The tone of Rév's piano is particularly rich and marvelously recorded. And she is an exceedingly sensitive and musicianly player. There are subtleties of inflection, dynamics and rubato that make every piece, no matter how familiar, interesting and engaging.

But I must break off writing here because I want to go back and listen again to the last five pieces here, by composers I imagine most of us have never heard: the Pole, Milosz Magin, and the Slovenian, Janez Maticic.

I really enjoyed this recording even from the vinil era, its greatly achieved. The etudes are extraordinary too, espcially the chords one, captured beatifuly by Bream, has all the Brazilian flavor in it.

This has been my favourite CD for a considerable period. A must for anyone who listens to classical music. The concerto is a masterpiece, the use of texture and tone colour by Villa Lobos superb, with some truly excellent woodwind parts. Not to mention the guitar part - treated with the sensitivity and virtuosity of which only Bream is capable, it displays what must be some of the finest idiomatic guitar-writting ever. It surprises me that so few people have reviewed this as yet. Then there are the preludes and etudes, Bream's reccording of which - because of more advanced technology and to some extent, more sophisticated treatment - surpass Segovia's considerably, in this reviwer's opinion (please no hate mail!).

In sum: buy it or your a mofo.

    Though I'm no authority on guitar music, I do have two recordings of the Villa-Lobos preludes included on this disk. Bream's playing here beats the other recording hands-down. It has a quality of elegance and yet of fun that I've called in this review's title simply "musical." And that's what we listen to music for, isn't it? I truly love those pieces and this CD.

    This is Julian Bream in his early twenties at the beginning of his career (and he was extremely handsome back then, giving Parkening a run for his money). The playing is wonderful for its day and age, and he already has the "Bream" sound. Recommended for the serious collector. He re-visits most of these works later on RCA, but it is interesting to compare and contrast, and see how much he matured.

    At last there has been several guitarists who have recorded integrally the complete work for guitar of this beloved Brazilian composer.

    Leo Brouwer wrote about Anders Miolin; "In him we are confronted with a true artist, who makes us forget he' s also a "virtuoso" because he has mastered that unusual quality and virtue called poetry."

    I recommend you with all my best wishes to acquire this unusual album, due you will find to Villalobos in another facet totally different; the artist in his intimacy, a very common feature with another composers of the instrument as Agustin barrios Mangore, Antonio Lauro, Leo Brouwer or Manuel Ponce.

    A very dispirited interpretation of Villalobos. The sound is almost inaudible and lacks the sometimes playful, sometimes relaxed overtones so characteristic in Villalobos.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally a man who has fully grasped Villa-Lobos!.......2006-10-05

    The Brazilian culture, among all other things, is complex. The melanchony of the Portugese heritage forms a stark contrast to the sheer energy of South America and they are fused in a unique way to form what we call Brasil today. All of this intertwined ambivalency is what really distinguishes Villa Lobos`s music from the rest. However, people don`t seem to get this point or at least easily overlook it. The former players; encapsulated by the sterile environment of concert halls, have conspiciously filtered out the street music influences from the Brazilian folk culture which is right at the heart of this eminent composer`s works. Now, at last, there is a guy who has thoroughly studied over what Villa Lobos has left behind and made a record which would easily define a benchmark for all other guitarists.

    If you are really passionate about Villa-lobos, listening this will be a rewarding experience for you. This one is a real keeper!

    Zanon has technique by the yard and studied all the manuscript evidence available (he writes that early editions of the Etudes were riddled with errors and he's right, I tried learning etude 1 from an early run and was very confused).

    Armed with his scholarly work and fingers Zanon not only gives the best interpretation of Villa-Lobos solo guitar work I've heard, he also seems to be the only person to have crammed all of V-L's solo guitar works on to a single CD. This is one CD any fan of Villa-Lobos and 20th century classical guitar simply must own.

    I am a professional classical guitarist, and have been in love with this particular recording from the beginning of my student years. This has been the first of many CDs in my guitar collection and still ranks as my all around favorite.
    Zanon's technical virtuosity is only second to his musicality. It should also be noted that this recording is historically important as he studied the original manuscripts in Villa-Lobos' writing in a museum in Brazil first hand, whereas the widely available sheetmusic has been altered by publishers. Simply the best!!!!!

    Fabio Zanon presents an amazing work with this CD. After researching for a long time and having in hands the fac-similes written by Villa Lobos himself, Zanon released what has now become a reference in the musical world. I have to say that I have at least five recordings of this same repertoire. All of them are good, but cannot be compared to Fabio Zanon's recording. This is INDEED the definitive recording of these works. A MUST-HAVE for guitarists and guitar lovers!

    If you enjoy guitar, this CD is a great listening experince. The five preludes and twelve etudes are original, distinct and captivating. It is hard to believe that this cd was recorded in 4 days using 1 guitar. There are times when it sounds like there are at least three guitar voices singing out load. During Etude #11, Zannon is playing Es on all six different strings. The sound is original. Definitely out of the box music.
