In preparation for the birth of my first child, and incidentally my first hospital stay, I packed a bag that included several cd's that I hoped would help me to relax. This is the one that my husband chose to play first when the time came. It worked so well at soothing and calming me that I never requested that it be changed, but just played it over and over for several hours. It created a beautiful, calming atmosphere which may have contributed to a blessedly short and uncomplicated delivery. Many of the hospital staff actually commented upon how peaceful the music was. So this, then, became the music that greeted my son upon his entry into the world, and one of my all time favorites. I have continued to play it for its soothing effect, and it never fails to uplift.

I've been listening to this recording for a month now with an eye to reviewing it. There was always something else to review first. In my book, if something stands up to a month of listening, it's pretty good.

Seascapes is one of Jones earlier albums. As Jones developed he became more melody oriented, but his earlier work has a lighter, almost jazzy touch. There is more experimentation and "going with the music" than what was to come. This isn't a criticism of what he became, but Seascapes offers a vision all its own.

Listen to Solitude, or Beyond the Dream. It sounds improvisational, even if it isn't. And the silences are just as important as the music. This a lot is more than just sophisticated elevator music, or New Age meditation music. Jones, and fellow pianist George Winston, is at the forefront of this kind of style, and well worth listening to. I know the titles are a bit pretentious, but the artistry is there never the less.

I have had this CD for 10 years, and it is still my favourite above all. The music enables you to shut your eyes to both remember the past and plan for the future. If you like quiet piano music, this CD is a must.

I love these piano compositions. They are distinguished from others of the New Age piano genre by their length and complexity--sounding almost like a symphonic tone poem for solo piano. Mr. Jones is an extremely talented composer and performer, and this CD is a real classic.

        Koechlin's piano music can be divided into a few periods,although his discursive imagination seems to blur any hard and fast distinctions.
        Robert Orledge in his marvelous comprehensive study on Koechlin divides the piano music into two periods. The first incorporating these seas interludes(1915-16), and the Les Heures persanes,(1916-1919).
        These works are more harmonically advanced polytonal and bi-tonalof which Koechlin had repremanded his student Darius Milhaud of the great distinctions between bi-tonal and polytonal. The second period encompasses more purely tonal, relatively simpler pieces as the "Quatre nouvelles Sonatines". Most of his piano music is not incredibly pianistic although he intimately knew the implications of that language,perhaps not terribly interested. For Koechlin's real genius power was timbre, orchestration.Akin to Maurice Ravel his contemporary was more strongly in that pianistic timbral world of discourse. For Koechlin it was the imaginative envois,elan,the phantasmagoric or fantasi content that excited and animated his works.
        These seas interludes are predictably spacious, with a plethora of open intervals, Fifths, Fourths, and slow. Their durational frames proceed, unfold with the utmost care for the pianistic decay. They have a luminous polytonal language, and amply render the differences where the horizinal spatiality meets, interfaces with the vertical. Koechlin's music may seem static, yet he I beleive creates differeing contexts, ones that Les Six had ignored,in favor of more direct expressive gestures. Long sinuous lines come to dominate these sea interludes,arabeque like,plainsong, and in Orledge's account has some affinity with art nouveau fashionable of the times in Paris.
        I prefer these to the "Les heures persanes"where his own orchestration of those 16 pieces for piano cast a giant shadow over the piano solo.
        These interludes are wonderfully suggestive.
        The earlier "nocturne chromatique" from 1907 is deeply dark,the effacacious wonder here is the slow introduction of tones that evoke the image. Again the music moves lugubriously,yet with a sense of disquitude,anxious,perceptive of possible dangers, with an electric sense of ongoing motion, there's nothing slothful here.Even toward the final moments we get blinding full fisted cathedral like chords. Something Messiaen is indebted to. Spaces are filled quite predictable with broken chordal sequences,yet with a self-possessed elan for the pure beauty of the piano timbre. Ms. Richards is not a stranger to the new, and has an impressive sense of Koechlin's enlightened sensitivity for the other-worldly epiphanies

                4 out of 5 stars Perfect for relaxation.......2002-11-23

                The people who put this album together have done a wonderful job of mixing the beautiful sounds of the surf with just a touch of man made music. I have had this collection stolen three times and keep buying it. I use it for personal relaxation and I also use it professionally as a massage therapist. I highly suggest this album to people who are stressed out or have a problem sleeping soundly. Try going to sleep with it on very softly in the background.
