Phenomenal.......2005-07-11
Undoubtedly one of the best contemporary classical works. The Violin and Piano Sonata is in itself worth the price of the CD. The grace of this music perfectly reflects the optimism and progress in late 19C-early 20th century Western civilization. No composer since has captured the magic of classical music as Franck has done.
Great Music by a Great Composer.......2003-08-21
Cesar Franck (1822 -- 1890)was born in Belgium but spent most of his life in France. For much of his career, he was a church organist and professor of organ at the Paris Conservatory. He wrote music from an early age. His early works consist mostly of piano music or works for the organ. But he discovered himself as a composer only in the last decade or so of his life. During this period, he wrote in many musical genres (typically only a single work) and produced a small number of lasting masterpieces. His work is heavily influenced by late Beethoven, Liszt, and Wagner. It is late musical romanticism at, I think, its best.
This 2-CD mid-priced set, "The Best of Cesar Frank" lives up to its name. It consists of many of the masterpieces of Franck's late years in a variety of forms. It is a convenient way to get much of Cesar Frank's music, well-played, in a single set. It includes a symphony, vocal music, organ music, music for piano and orchestra, and a work for solo piano by a variety of musicians. The CD will repay repeated hearings and give the listener a good exposure to Franck.
The most famous work on this CD is Franck's "Symphony in D minor"
which was first performed in 1889 and presented here by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Willem Van Otterloo. This is a fine performance of a much-beloved symphony. I found it emphasized the romantic, passionate character of the music with its frequent changes of tempo and mood.
But other selections on this CD I enjoyed substantially more than the symphony. Franck's greates work is probably his violin sonata in A which dates from 1886. It receives an outstanding performance on this CD from violinist Arthur Gumiaux and pianist Istvan Hajdu. The violin sonata is in four movements, which develop aspects of the same underlying theme ("cyclic" composition, typical of Franck). The music is glorious, elevated and lyrical throughout, in contrast to most of Franck's music which emphasizes contrasts between serenity and passion. The first and third movements are slow and reflective while the second and fourth are faster. The climax of this work, its final movement, is intense, reflective, and joyous all at once. It is based upon the same theme that Beethoven used as his main theme in the finale of the cello sonata in A opus 69.
Frank's work (and Beethoven's cello sonata as well) is one of the high watermarks of chamber music literature.
I also was much taken with the "Prelude, Choral and Fugue" for solo piano. This work dates from 1884 and it is performed here by pianist Eduardo Del Pueyo. This was my first exposure to this work, and I loved it. It consists of three movements which combine, to my ears, a romantic style, featuring long passages of broken chords and lyrical melodies, with baroque contrapuntal writing. I found this piece and the violin sonata the highlights of this fine collection.
Franck wrote extensively for the organ and this CD features his "Piece Heroique" which lives up to its name together with two other late and deeper works, the Choral in B minor and the Cantabile in B that are much more intense and reflective in character. Listeners who are unfamiliar with organ music, or with organ music beyond Bach, may enjoy exploring this music.
The CD also includes a lovely vocal piece "Panis angelicus" , Franck's "Variations Symphoniques" for piano and orchestra, and a Wagnerian tone poem "Les Etolides" all of which are well performed here and worth knowing.
Franck is an inspiring figure to me in that he persevered, stayed within himself, and produced some undoubted musical masterworks near the close of a long life. This disc is a fine way to get to know his music.
Listeners who wish to hear more of the best of Cesar Franck beyond the selections on this CD might enjoy his Piano Quintet in F Minor (1880) and his String Quartet in D Major (1890).
5 Stars aren't enough!.......1998-11-14
The Sonata for Piano and Violin is the most beautiful piece of music I have EVER heard. especially movements 1 & 4. The Symphony (Disc 2) is merely
outstanding. Either of the pieces is well worth the entire price for the collection.

Great compositions, very good performances.......2003-03-09
On this cd one finds Cesar Franck's only symphony (in D) as well as two symphonic poems, "Les Eolides" (The winds) and "Le Chasseur maudit" (cursed hunter). Although I enjoy this interpretation of Symphony in D, I found the EMI 47849 recording conducted by Riccardo Muti much more colorful, expansive and confident. So if symphony in D is the primary reason for considering this recording, one might want to consider the EMI version as well.
On the other hand, I've yet to hear a better rendition of "Les Eolides" which is my favorite of the three. I very much enjoy the dynamics of the tempo, which truely is characterisic of the wind. It's one of the great examples of musical poetry.
When listening to "Chasseur maudit" I cannot but help picture a small village in France, sometime in the evening. What is happening here I cannot say, but just the ability of musical sounds to take one to a far away place is enough to appreciate this wonderful piece.

A good interpretation of Franck's masterpiece.......2005-06-30
Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra deliver here a compelling and convincing performance of Franck's great Symphony in D Minor. Many will no doubt be familiar with the classic interpretation of this symphony as performed by Pierre Monteux and Chicago. Masur generally exploits more modest tempos than Monteux; the result is a performance that has a great deal of propulsion and natural direction - essential if the work's cyclic structure is to be grasped. I also found that in his rendition, Masur brings a welcome clarity to the inner voices, which can often be muddled in other recordings. The New York Philharmonic play with conviction and emotion. The strings are warm and deep, the brass round and clear, and the winds crisp and light. It is a pity that the harp is not more prominant in the second movement. The other piece on the disc, Franck's symphonic poem `Les Eolides,' makes an ideal partner to the symphony. Recorded sound is perhaps the greatest flaw here. The symphony was recorded live, and for some reason, possibly due to micing or editing, the thrilling climaxes in the symphony are rather mezzo forte. I felt as though the brass never really exploded - there was no 'loud' to be found in the symphony.
It is all too easy, I believe, for conductors to turn late French Romantic masterpieces like the symphonies of Franck, D'Indy, and Saint-Saens into sappy, vulgar perversions of the true works. Such works will always benefit from refined, sympathetic performances by musicians, like Masur, who grasp the depth and spirit that pervade this music.
Although the quintessential recording of the Franck Symphony must remain, for me, the Monteux version, I recommend this interesting disc as a supplement - if for no other reason than the clarity and trasparency of the playing.

Poor recording.......2004-03-29
Buying Masur (for me at least) has always been hit or miss. Take, for example, his recording of the Dvorak 8th and the Janácek Sinfonietta - an amazing performance of both of these works. Large brass sounds, responsive playing, interesting, well thought-out interpretations. His recordings of the Beethoven overtures for Phillips are equally thrilling. On the other hand, take his recording of the Beethoven 5th. It seems like a different conductor and orchestra than in the Dvorak/Janácek performance. Here we find a bored orchestra playing a concert staple with no energy, no emotion, no nothing. That is what you will find here in this recording of Frank's only symphony. The energy of the piece is totally destroyed and we are left with a mediocre performance of this great romantic work. Look elsewhere.
Horrible recording.......2003-07-28
I talked with some of the musicians that performed on this recording because the balance is horrible. I was informed that the engineers tweeked the balance to not include the brass on most of the loud sections. If you are a string enthusiest and hate brass buy this otherwise ... this recording stinks
Nothing like the live performance, but amazing!.......2002-01-02
I heard the Philharmonic play the symphony with Masur in person a few months ago, and I must say it was one of the most amazing things that I have ever heard. A new an exciting approach to a piece, completely void of form. I ran out an immeadiately purchased a copy of CD recorded about 6 years earlier. While it remains one of the better recordings of the piece, it lacked that sparkle that the live performance had. I guess that one could say this is the difference between live, and recorded performances. Still...I think that the CD is worthwhile, and that it is the best of what is available!
Not an alternative at any price.......2000-07-28
Here we have yet another sludgy, dark, Teutonic Franck traversal, almost as unremittingly terrible as the Mehta/Berlin that's out there wasting our ears. I've never known Masur to have anything much to say anywhere. He has even less here.
I can't say I wax enthusiastic about any of the Amazon reviewer's suggested alternatives. The Oterloo is a pretty good stab at it, open and airy, well-planned and thoughtful, but a great work deserves better. The Monteux is dark, undiomatic, a little scrappy, heavy, overpraised (it's fashionable to call this a classic, yet it's full of sound gimmicks and some audible edits--sheez). Flor isn't bad, more like the Oterloo, but it lacks any personality and the great originality of the work is obfuscated when the orchestra slides into playing in patterns. How many takes were involved in it?
Try Paul Paray on Mercury. Here you have the great Gallican maestro and his superb Detroit Symphony giving us all the power, drama, sincerity and confidence that Franck put on the page. If you're used to the Papa Franck from bad Music Appreciation classes, it will startle you. Your jaw will really drop when it dawns on you that all this excitement came from an old man of 80 and that each movement is a single take. On top of it, you get the Rachmaninoff Second in the issue. It's not appropriate to discuss it here, but you'll be just as amazed.
Eolides has gotten much better "advocacy" than this perfunctory Masur sessiontoo. Try Ansermet or Cluytens to get full measure of the work.

Sweeping orchestral sound..........2005-03-25
Though critics originally didn't receive the "Symphony in D" well
in 1822, today it is considered one of the great masterpieces.
The sweeping jubilant central theme of the first movement again repeated in the finale is most memorable. Throughout Franck's magnificent compact score, keeps the listener mesmorized. It never really lets you down! The tone poem "Les Eolides" virgin daughters of a Greek god, sets to music a floating breeze of strings accented by the winds. The virgins get a little frisky at times, that makes for some thematic variations. The symphonic poem "Les Chasseur maudit" belongs with the "Danse Macabre" and "Night on Bald Mountain" on any creepy classical Halloween disc. I guess the lack of a better title and memorable theme has kept it off. This tells of a Count that would rather play than pray on Sunday. Off he goes hunting(horns glissening), then finds himself pursued by devils to the gates of hell. The music takes all kinds of horrific twists.
Raymond Leppard and the RPO along with the engineers, make this disc an enjoyable symphonic romp.
