Soprano Dawn Upshaw's programs are always interesting, and this one's a beauty: one of Bach's most heartfelt cantatas flanked by songs and arias of Purcell. For the most part, she's in excellent voice, but with the tics that make some demur from enthusiasm: occasional swooping, thinning of the voice in the upper regions, lapses into a "Broadway" type of vocalism, and diction problems. The latter, oddly enough, are as present in Purcell's English as in Bach's German, as in the way Upshaw lands heavily on the r with a broad American accent rather than the lightly rolled r we're used to in performances of period English music. There's also some broad word-painting in the Bach, whose text, charting the soul's journey from sin to redemption, really needs no extra emoting. That said, Upshaw's fans will love this disc, and even those who prefer a different approach will enjoy it. Accompaniments are excellent: a continuo team in the Purcell, a small chamber group in the Bach. Outstanding sonics, too. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, fervent Bach, but the Purcell songs are a bit prettified.......2006-08-24
Amazon's reviewer seems to have zoned out on how Dawn Upshaw pronounces words, missing most of the musical value here. Her singing of the Bach cantata, 'Mein Herze schwimmt in Blut,' is very moving. She is deeply involved, and her voice extracts the deep reverence and religious passion that makes this music so great. I'm not as convinced by the Purcell songs, however. Upshaw has chosen some of the most famous, and set against great singers like Battle, Baker, and Ferrier, her rendiitons seem a little shallow and prettified. She's considerably more tuned in to Bach, which is good enough to make this a memorable CD, if not her very best. Things would be much improved if the conducting by the (totally uncredited) conductor weren't so limp.
Now that the Sun hath veil'd his light............2001-08-04
Some say angels are God's messangers. When angels communicate, surely they sound like Dawn Upshaw. Upshaw's beautiful soprano voice rises to the stars and floats back again as she sings the beautiful collection of arias and cantatas by Purcell and Bach contained in ANGELS HIDE THEIR FACES.
Shaw's interpretation of Purcell's 'How sweet it is to love' reminds me of the elation I first felt on realizing love exists. 'Lord what is a man' brings one back to earth with a lamentation about human frailty and the finiteness of human existence. "Rejoice, rejoice" sings the angel in 'Hark! How all things' with lyrics from 'The Fairy Queen' -- a text by E. Settle after Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.'
Bach's cantatas fill the air as Upshaw sings arias in German (interpretations are provided in the text accompanying the CD). J.S. Bach's songs are clearly and beautifully articulated by Upshaw while in the backgound various wind and string instruments accompany her vocalizations. Many of Upshaw's vocalizations by Bach in German as well as the instrumentation (including viol consort) remind me of the arias from 'The Messiah' -- majestic albeit on a very human scale. For example, Aria #9 by Bach is comparable to "He shall lead his flock.." (although the latter was written for an alto voice).
The music in English by Purcell is a bit lighter. My favorite piece is 'An evening hymn' by Purcell which I would expect to hear near dusk in an English chapel. However, ANGELS HIDE THEIR FACES contains music you can play year round at any time of day.
Picky reviewers.......2001-05-31
I've got a degree in musicology ( and am fluent in German as well), and for a while after total immersion in graduate school, found my listening enjoyment frustrated by the same pickiness that hampers your reviewer. Fortunately, that passed, and I'm now able to simply appreciate Dawn Upshaw's performance of the music we hear all too seldom. I hope that others will be able to participate in Upshaw's interpretation of the poetry behind the music, to think about the theological role of angels (not just pretty faces and feathery wings), to love this wonderful recording. We are indeed blessed that technology allows us to experience such music, such an artist.
hark ! how well the lady sings.......2001-05-31
This is one of those little gems that becomes more appealing with each hearing. The Purcell pieces are sweet and lovely, but the Bach ! This Cantata is the glory of this CD. It's verses are of the deepest sorrow and repentance, woeful utterances for God's forgiveness, until the final aria, "How joyful is my heart since God is appeased". Dawn Upshaw's interpretation is beautiful. She captures the emotion, the longing, the spirituality and heart of the piece.
The musicians in the simple accompaniment are superb, and the entire package excellent...it was the cover art that first drew my attention to this CD...an unusual and moving painting by Hugo Simberg titled "Wounded Angel" from 1903. It also has the lovely added touch of being slip-cased, making it a perfect gift item for anyone who likes this type of music.

Customer Reviews:
Fine recital of neglected composer.......2000-10-29
I'd agree with the earlier reviewer that this CD is for those who have already tried Dowland. However Dowland has been fortunate in the recording studio and Campion much neglected (this appears to be the only disc dedicated to him currently available) so Naxos deserve our thanks for having brought Rickards and Linell back together for a second disc. What is particularly encouraging is to find a whole disc of songs, not just a few raisins in a cake of viol music which is how Dowland and his contemporaries are normally represented. Not that I've anything against mixed recitals - the collaborations of Fretwork with Red Byrd are beautiful - but it tends to be the same better known songs.
The first recordings of early English music on the Naxos label (I'm thinking of Summerly's earlier recordings of Byrd, Tomkins, Gibbons) lacked texts, that has been corrected in later releases, including both this disc (timing 52:52), and the earlier Rickards Dowland recital (8.553381, 1997, timing 74:08). Sound on both discs is more than adequate.
Good Performance but the content?.......2000-02-01
I make no claims to being knowledable about the intricacies of this music. But if I were giving stars I'd give the performance four or five and the content...um...that's the hard part.
I bought this out of curiosity. Campion's lyrics turn up occasionally in anthologies of poetry and I was curious to hear the songs. I own Rickards and Linell's "Dowland: Flow my tears and other lute songs" and i play it often so I also wanted to know what Dowland's competition sounded like.
Firstly, the performance is of the same high standard as on the other disk. Which is good. Linell plays well and Rickards' voice is fine. The liner notes provide good background information as well as the words to the songs. The only real complaint I could have about the performance is probably related to production: The lute sounds small, thin and distant compared with, say, Bream's lute on "The golden age of English Lute music" or Lindberg's on "The complete solo lute music". This is true of the pair's Dowland recording as well but it may only be a drawback if you're trying to use the performances as a guide to playing the songs yourself. ( I was).
The real drawback to this recording though is the material. Play the Dowland and you're liable to find yourself humming odd snatches of the songs. Play the Campion and you're liable to have difficulty remembering any of the individual tunes. Nor do the lyrics redeem the music. He probably was a "better " lyric writer than Dowland (whatever that means) but music wise Dowland beats him hollow.
If you're studying music history this might be an interesting collection. But if you're just curious and want an introduction to the songs of the period, go for the Dowland first. You're liable to be left feeling like you could listen to more, and then the Campion becomes interesting as a variation. Buy the Campion first and you're liable to wonder why people get enthusiastic about English lute songs. And that would be a pity and a disservice to Linell and Rickards who do such a good job.

Customer Reviews:
Good performance of good music.......2002-04-05
I find less to criticize than others in this music and performance. If you know MacDowell, you know the kinds of things to expect from these songs. Not great music, but still beautiful genteel songs. MacDowell lets the lyricism flow smoothly. Most of the songs float along in the 6/8 rhythm MacDowell used so often. Concentrating on the melodic line, some of the occasional awkwardly thorny harmonies you can find in his miniatures fade into the background. Indeed, some may think the piano is too far in the background here. Too bad, because the late James Barbagallo obviously had quite a gift for MacDowell interpretation. Check out his recordings of MacDowell's solo piano works. What of tenor Tharp? Some may find his voice a little too thin, with a bit too much vibrato. But I say the songs are well sung regardless. Maybe the problem is that the songs really required a woman's voice. But what's done is done. These complete songs needed to be recorded, and this performance quite adequate, reservations notwithstanding. Over all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this recording.
Tepid music, tepid performances.......2000-03-26
I'm sorry to have to say it, but this recording contains music that is undistinguished in performances that are competent only. The music is Grieg-and-water. The American tenor's voice is light-weight and charmless. The pianist is excellent. You can't beat the price, though, if you really want to hear this repertoire.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2005-12-23
What a great line-up of singers on this disc! Although Campions' songs are written as solo songs he stated at the time that they may also be enjoyed as part songs. On this CD they are tastefully mixed both vocally and instrumentally. There are trios with soprano, tenor, baritone and lute where the lute is treated almost like another voice part. Each of the singers has a solo or two and Chance has several. It is also good to keep in mind that Thomas Campion (l567-l620) was a poet as well as a musician who had the capability of putting together the two art forms, words and music. As he says, "lovingly coupled together." From over 100 songs it was difficult to select only 25, but Campion helped us by placing his prize songs often at the beginning of a volume. And it is certainly appropriate to present these chosen songs with varied vocal combinations. My favorites are the last three on the album: "The Sypres curten of the night is spread" (Michael Chance); "Author of Light" (quartet:(Elliott-soprano;Chance-countertenor;Padmore-tenor;Harvey -baritone) and "Never weather-beaten Saile" (Chance).

Excited about the Psycho Desperado.......2002-04-10
The title cut of the "Endless Sky" CD is our first experience with Chuck Pyle's music from an NPR program. We were immediately and completely mesmerized by the melody, the lyrics, and his artistry on the accoustical guitar. It was music that all at one time was "new and exciting" and "remarkably comfortable". We purchased "Endless Sky" and two other CD releases immediately from [an on-line retailer] and enjoy them as endlessly as the Western skies and and forever thoughts his music evokes when listening. "Your Life In Love With Mine" will etch into your heart forever, "Akasha Wind" will play in your dreams, "Keepers of the Earth" will give honest responsibility to your faith, and "Rio Rey" will let you feel like you are sitting with great friends and filled with joy when you are just driving home from work! We ordered "Affected By The Moon" tonight, and have been enjoying, the music of "Endless Sky" for a few months, and hope you also will be able to enjoy "Keepin' Time By the River", and "Camel Rock". Our hopes are to see him perform live.. and our greater hopes are that others will be fortunate to enjoy his voice, his music, and his unique and compelling, exciting and satisfying style. For those who know him, his music will always free their souls and release their stresses. For those of you who will be a first time listeners, you will finally find an artist who gives you that personal touch that rarely is found with the super nova packaged artisans that are promoted but only deliver glitz, nothing more. Chuck Pyle is pure joyful music and you will find that it is YOU who will shine with listening enjoyment and a satisfying comfort that holds you like all of nature. We recommend "Endless Sky" as a wonderful first or continuing collection of Chuck Pyle!
RIDIN' TALL IN A ZEN-GALLON HAT..........2001-07-02
Chuck Pyle is an absolute treasure in American music. His carefully crafted, intelligent songs get into your mind as well as into your toe (just try not to tap your foot to some of these), and they leave a gentle mark.
Working loosely in the genre of acoustic western swing, Pyle shows through his writing that he has respect for many styles of music, and he's not at all shy about letting them show. Folk, country, jazz, blues, swing -- all of these forces are at work here, and to wonderful advantage. Chuck Pyle is a true original -- he sounds like no one else. He's not some delusional would-be cowboy trying to channel Bob Wills or Gene Autry -- he's his own man, and he's as honest about the things that move him as any writer working today.
Every disc I've heard by Chuck has been full of great songs, chosen and recorded well -- this one has to be my favorite. There's not a single wasted track here -- every one of these songs paints a memorable picture of a feeling or person or place that Pyle has seen or experienced, and we come away from this cd with the feeling that we've experienced them as well.
'Rio Rey' begins the set with a look at the light and colors of a beautiful place in New Mexico that is favored by artists for those attributes -- 'Endless sky' is one of Chuck's many love songs to the Western landscape. The mood changes dramatically and effectively with 'Gypsy minor', filled with musical echoes of the soul of Romany. 'Everyday now' is one of the most beautiful love songs you'll hear anywhere. Showing his respect for the good work of other fine writers, Pyle turns in a really nice job on L. J. Booth's wonderful song 'Akasha wind'. 'The winter of our affair' is a touching look back at a treasured memory, done in the style of a classic jazz ballad. Chuck's 'metronome thumb' (you'll understand this reference if you're ever fortunate enough to see him perform live) kicks back in with 'Moonglow rising', another paean to the gorgeous land- and sky-scapes of the American West. On 'Keepers of the earth', Chuch delivers a heart-felt anthem for the environment and our responsibilities to it -- without sounding 'preachy' even for a moment.
There are several discs available by this fine performing singer-songwriter -- if you've never heard him, start here and work your way through them. None of them will let you down. Pyle's style is a finely crafted one -- this is Western music, without a doubt, but without any of the maudlin attributes of Nashville country music. Chuck Pyle sings from the heart as well as the mind and spirit, and his music can touch us in all of those places.
That's a rare thing.
Smooth, slow and soft.......2000-01-16
Chuck Pyle has one of the most relaxing, soothing sounds going today. His acoustic guitar playing is excellent and his voice is smooth and steady. My favorites in this album are "Sailing" and "Gypsy Minor". This is the type of album I like to listen to at work to block out the noise of the world and remind me that there is more to life than work. I highly recommend this album to everyone who enjoys good acoustic guitar music with a slow deliberate pace and ballads that speak to the ordinary life.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2005-12-21
Throughout history the lute has been used to accompany the human voice. The art of the lute ayre, like so many English cultural activities,is an eclectic one, for there are many iinfluences in its evolution. These elements basically are: Classical and Bardic recitation, Italian improvisation, and French declamatory metrical forms. The many and varied type selections on this recording testify to all of these characteristics. Some of the composers included are: Campion,Ford,Holborne,Danyel and of course, John Dowland. This disc showcases 2 great musicians who become one in performance. It is as if they could read each others' minds. The perfectly beautiful voice of Chance, who is in his element when he performs songs from this era, complements the technique and sensitivity of Wilson's lute playing. The songs themselves are very entertaining and run the gamut of human emotions. The title song: Sypres Curtain of the Night has to be one of Campion's best! Buy it if you want to sit back and experience an hour of pure pleasure!
