3 out of 5 stars Oddly dispirited and square.......2005-09-24

These lushly romantic, even shmaltzy arrangements of Bach for orchestra--the kind made famous by Stokowski when conducting was a glamorous Hollywood profession--don't suit Salonen at all. By temperament he is all but anti-romantic, a modernist through and through. So these performances, despite being well played and in gorgeous sound, are lifeless. Stick with Stokowski all the way.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Bach Recording.......2001-03-22

Tis is a collection of some of the best music suited for orchestra. Most of these works were originally for harpsichord and organ. They are played with such grace and elegance by L.A.P. Salonen does a fantastic job conducting. Thede pieces were brillantly arranged by the likes of Stokowsky, Webern, Mahler, Elgar, etc. These are among the most brilliant musicians ever. They are fantastic. The Tocatta and Fugue in d is powerful. The elegance of the suites are matched by nothing. The Air is so moving. The flutist is wonderful. This is an all around great c.d. for any Bach fan.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent recording...if transcriptions appeal to you.......2000-12-15

With all the new and exciting contemporary works that the LA Phil is presenting (not to mention the rethinking of some of the "old masters") I wonder why Salonen elected to put this selection on disc. The orchestra plays beautifully, the sound is elegant, but there is something that aproaches pedantic about this. Perhaps Salonen wants to exercise some of the influences on his own composing. Or perhaps this is an homage to the old tradition of creating various arrangements of well known music for a variety of ensembles. It is valuable as a curiosity, but it is doubtful that it will be one of your frequently played recordings. Why not Stucky or Lieberson or Reich or even the Gorecki 2nd Symphony instead.......?

5 out of 5 stars Back to Bach (Via Philadelphia).......2000-10-11

Vulgarian and Neanderthal throwback that I am, I love this stuff, inordinantly. I think Stokowski a genius and precisely for his Bachwerk, his "arrangements" of the Leipzig master's keyboard compositions for full modern symphony orchestra. But Stoki labored in good company, for, as Esa-Pekka Salonen's new Sony anthology with the L.A. Philharmonic shows, Gustav Mahler, Sir Edward Elgar, Arnold Schoenberg, and Anton Webern inter alia all put their able hands to updating and amplifying Bach for a dynamo age. (As a matter of fact, Leonard Slatkin has recorded a similar, but even more variegated, CD, with the BBC Philharmonic, for Chandos.) We begin with Stoki's most famous (or infamous) transcription, the D-Minor Toccata and Fugue, made doubly notorious through its role as a kind of overture in the Disney film "Fantasia." Salonen competes with several recorded versions, going back to the late 1920s, with Stoki himself at the helm of the Philadelphia and other orchestras. He has, I believe, made the decision to do it the way Stoki did it, and the result is satisfying. (That is to say, technicolor, over-the-top, and cinematically glittering.) Next up? Elgar's miraculously pompous and circumstantial reworking of the Fantasy and Fugue in C-Minor (also on Slatkin's Chandos CD). Yep. Sounds like the First Symphony or one of those processionals. Relish it. Glory in it. Dann kommt ja Herr Webern, with his sound-coloristic treatment of the Ricercar from "A Musical Offering." Less grand, it is, than Elgar, but uncanny and hence welcome as a change of pace. In Arnold Schoenberg's hyper-romantic rethinking, the "Ste. Anne" Prelude and Fugue becomes a vast two-movement symphony, with the same orchestral palette as his own "Pelleas und Melisande" or "Gurrelieder." Stoki now makes another appearance, with his version of the "Little" Fugue in G Minor. At last, Gustav Mahler comes up to the plate with his arrangment of selections from the orchestral suites. Der "Gustl" offers perhaps the tamest stuff here, but it's still plenty meaty fare. Gimme more! I remember, for example, a mid-1970s LP of Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphians in arrangements of nothing but the fugues. There were eight of `em, as I recall. Then there was the Columbia LP of the London Symphonic Wind Ensemble doing Bach as Berlioz might have done him when he was writing the Symphonie Funebre et Triomphale. And is there a billionaire out there who will commission some needy living composers to orchestrate the Preludes and Fugues of that other contrapuntal master, Dmitri Shostakovich? Meanwhile, I'll keep playing the lottery.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Salonen, Magnificent Bach plus.......2000-09-10

Esa-Pekka Salonen is given to eccentric and idiosyncratic readings of scores, not always to their disadvantage. This selectionof transcriptions of Bach works by other composers and conductors is by its very nature odd-ball, and Salonen makes the most of it. He is particularly effective with Elgar's interpretation of the fantasy and Fugue in C Minor.

This is not a recording for Bach purists but for those who enjoy the sounds of a fleshed-out orchestra under the control of a masterful Romaticist. I give it five stars and a bullet and Salonen a hearty clap on the back for a job well done.

4 out of 5 stars STOKOWSKI THE WIZARD.......2002-10-25

I remember listening to these recordings on black lps back in the late 60s. Now that they have been remastered I can enjoy the performances as the conductor and London/Decca Phase 4 engineers intended.Sometimes the treble if over-lit and the isolation of certain instruments for dramatic effect by the conductor may be disconcerting to some listeners. Stokowski was notorious for "fiddling with" the original score(s) and it is very evident in these performances. But what performances they are - dramatic, emotional, heartfelt, and VERY symphonic. I can hardly see any ballet company on earth trying to dance to Stokowski's tempi. The cd is 67 minutes long and the playing is consistently glorious and has a panache that was a hallmark of Leopold Stokowski. The New Philharmonia and the Suisse Romande Orchestras play their hearts out and we should feel privileged to have these performances enshrined on compact disc.If you want more conventional readings of these works, listen to the ones of the full scores by Charles Dutoit et l'Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal. They are superb and contain almost all of the music of both ballets. But don't forget this recording by Stokowski and remembrances of another era.tcw

4 out of 5 stars Stokowski conducts Tchaikovsky.......2001-06-05

Recorded in glorious Phase 4 Stereo, the two ballets are performed with a spirit and lightness that is sadly missing in performances of todays conductors. The only thing listeners may object to, is the re-written ending of Romeo and Juliet. Stokowski did not believe that the romantic tone poem should end in loud, crashing chords, rather, he believed the death of the two characters should be handled peacefully. So Stokowski re-wrote the ending using strings and a mild cresescendo to express death quietly. This re-written ending violates the letter of the score. If you don't mind the re-scored ending, the disc as an entirety is excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Was the young Maazel also the best one?.......2006-11-22

I started listening to this box set of recordings from 1957-62, the years when Maazel skyrockted in Europe as an American wunderkind, with low expectations. For me, Maazel joins Mehta and Ozawa as great young promises that were never fulfilled. Thoroughly disliked by orchestral musicians (a condition that seems to have changed now with the NY Phil.), eccentric in his phrasing, often too brash but alternating with dull slackness, he has noticeably declined over the decades. Hardly a single NY Phil. concert earns high praise from the city's major critics.

With all this in mind, I was amazed at the beauty of certain recordings here. First of all, DG's transfers of the old LPs are crystal clear, and secondly, the Berlin Phil. was coming into its own under Karajan at this time and plays with great impact and excitement. But there's good news in the conducting as well. Listen to this lively Beethoven Pastorale, full of good humor and sparkling detail, then compare it to Maazel's half-dead Beethoven Ninth on BMG. Or this ebulient Tchaikovsky Fourth, which is dynamic, balanced, and, once again, full of life. These two performances rank among the best I've heard in the modern era.

Mr. Richman covers the whole box in some detail below, and I generally agree that Maazel's flaw is rushing the music and sounding too brusque. His Beethoven Fifth suffers from those faults in the first and last movements. The Brahms Third, after a terrific start and two good inner movements, turns rushed and business-like in the finale. The accompanying Tragic Over. is back in form, however. And so is the highly individual Beethoven Consecration of the House Over., which emerges as a newly dramatic piece in Maazel's hands.

We move on to almost a complete Schubert symphony cycle (minus the First and Ninth), rare repertoire from a major conductor in the late Fifties and early Sixties. Treading into prime Beecham territory, Maazel turns out to be terrific, full of energy and force but also delicate when called for, only lacking Beecham's unique affability in this music. The Berliners play much better than Beecham's post-war Royal Phil., however, Where Mr. Richman hears rushing, I hear spontaneity and verve (admittedly, some movements, like the finale of the Fourth Sym., go at a breathless Presto). If Maazel had kept evolving, he would have replaced Guido Canteli, whose propulsive neo-Tosanini style was close to this.

Next we get three Mozart symphonies, the Jupiter plus two miniatures, Sym. 1 and 28. Maazel's Mozart is considerably more forceful than his Schubert, and for me it crosses the line (as Toscanini did) into being charmless and sharply attacked. There's no doubting the skill and ensemble of the orhcestra, however, which is crisp and starched, but not to the degree that Szell, for example, demanded.

The Mendelssohn Italian Sym. is miked very closely, with lots of attention to the woodwinds. It sounds a treat, as British critics say, and Maazel isn't driven. There are dozens of excellent readings of this symphony, and his ranks among them. I am of two minds about the Reformation, however, which has been available paired with the Franck D minor on a DG Originals disc. In the past I've found its briskness and lack of religiosity refreshing, but I can see why others find it emotionally pinched. As alternatives, Munch is more buoyant on RCA, and Karajan offers more grandeur on DG.

We get three versions of Romeo and Juliet, from Berlioz (43 min. of orchestral excerpts), Prokofiev (Suite #2 and one number from Suite #1), and Tchaikovsky. The Berlioz is supply phrased and played with intensity--it's worthy to stand beside Giulini on EMI and Bernstein on Sony, but of course one wants the whole work. Maazel wnet on to record the whole Prokofiev ballet with the Cleveland Orch. on Decca, but these few excerpts sound fresher to me, less studied. I've already enthused over the Tchaikovsky Fourth, and Romeo and Juliet is similarly tangy and alert, no dawdling or swooning. However, the world has many fine recordings of R & J compared to Tchaikovsky Fourths.

The remainder of the set consists of light classics: a vigorous, detailed Rimsky Capriccio Espagnole that works well enough, a Pines of Rome that does the same (this piece, however, requires blockbuster sonics to even remotely catch my attention), a Mussorgksy Night on Bald Mountain that's zippy and lacking in atmosphere. Finally we leave Berlin for Paris and Britten's Young Person's Guide, which seems thrown in for no particular reason except to acquaint us with Maazel's speaking voice as narrator. He's as clipped and efficient as his conducting style--and just as cool--lacking anything close to Bernstein's cozy warmth.

All told, you would have no doubt that a major conductor is at work here. Would that we could say the same for the older Maazel. I'd recommend this box set to anyone who wants to hear him at his best. It contains more good recordings than celebrated Original Masters sets devoted to Fricsay and Markevitch.

    4 out of 5 stars A Young Lorin Maazel.......2005-06-09

The most recent batch of DG's "Original Masters" box sets boasts several titles that will leave classical collectors rejoicing. While "Lorin Maazel: Complete Early Berlin Philharmonic Recordings 1957-1962" is not as essential as the Askenase or Schneiderhan releases (see my review of the latter), it is a welcome edition nonetheless. Maazel was only in his late 20s when he made these recordings, which include performances of Mozart (Syms 1, 28 & 41), Beethoven (Syms 5 & 6, etc), Schubert (Syms 2-8), Brahms (Sym 3 & the Tragic Overture), Mendelssohn (Syms 4 & 5), and more. Overall Maazel's readings are fiery and quickly paced, causing many critics to dismiss these recordings at the time of their initial releases as the brash, overly enthusiastic statements of a boy conductor. This is just criticism for much of the Schubert, the Beethoven 5th, Tchaikovsky 4th, and Night on Bald Mountain. However, I personally enjoy the majority of these performances. Additionally, the excerpts from Berlioz's Romeo & Juliet are quite lovely (and better than the other R&J's contained here -- Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev), the Pastoral is refreshingly brisk, and the Capriccio Espagnol is a personal favorite (I previously had it via DG's "Eternal Russia" collection). Also this earlier account of Respighi's Pines of Rome is quite good (though his later Decca Legends version outshines it) but I could do without the very pronounced bird calls towards the end of the Janiculum section. Something else this set could live without is the Britten Young Person's Guide, which Maazel narrates and performs with the ONRTF Paris (hello, not Berlin). A better title to include would have been his account of Harold in Italy, recently included on the DG box set "The Berlioz Experience" (I believe it fits the "Early Berlin" criteria better than the said Brittten does). As is, this is a delightful collection, showcasing the blossoming talents of a conductor who continues to dazzle audiences from the podium nearly fifty years later.

        3 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2007-05-20

This is an oddity -- Amazon recommended this CD to me even though it is no longer widely available in USA and even though Amazon itself does not sell it. This was one of Stokowski's Everest stereo recordings, formerly avialable in USA (not available now but still available in England so they'll be back). Stoki had a number of famous recordings on the Everest label -- Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 and Tchaikovsky "Francesca da Rimini" with the so-called Stadium Symphony Orchestra New York (it was the New York Philharmonic, I've read), and Wagner bleeding chunks including Stoki's own "Parsifal Act III Synthesis" with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. Many of these fine recordings have been reinvented by Arkiv Music, which bought the American rights and is reburning them from the original material.

This recording, which sounds pretty good for 1959 even though a bit of wow is apparent every now and again, lacks Stokowski's resident charm, wit, risk-taking and charisma. You'd think Stoki would register a magnificent "Til Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks", since both are mischievous sorts that like the occasional prank. Alas, that's not what Everest caught in this recording. Instead, the readings of Strauss's "Don Juan" and "Til Eulenspiegel" are so generic it could be any of 100 conductors leading the New York Phil. And Stokowski moves so rapidly through "Don Juan" you think he either trying to out-Szell George Szell, he dislikes the music, or he was tired of spending time in the recording studio and sought to get it over with as quickly as possible.

With sound that shows its age and scores of magnificent Strauss available at similar cost by Karajan, Bohm and others, this one isn't anything special. The CD includes American Thomas Canning's (1911-89) "Fantasy on a Hymn Tune by Justin Morgan" performed by the Houston Symphony. It is 11 minutes of neoclassicism that was recorded once before by Raymond Leppard and the Indianapolis Symphony. Canning also wrote a double quartet and some songs, any of which may be as memorable as the fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for Stokowski's only reading of Nevsky (at 88!).......2006-02-21

Leopold Stokowski, who was still a figure of dubious respectability when he died at age 95, has been lucky since then, with one reissue label (Cala) bringing out the best of his studio recordings and another (Music & Arts) a selection of live broadcasts. This CD of the latter begins with a 1951 performance of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet from the Hague. The sound is table-radio mono, but the volatile spirit of Stokowski's reading is still there.

From Baden-Baden come three excerpts from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, dating from 1955--in much better mono than the first item. Given that Stokowski made a wonderful recording of Prokofiev's Cinderella Suite, it's no surprise that these tantalizingly few excerpts are equally charismatic. The SWF Radio Orch. gives its all, and the intensity is such that it's hard to take a breath anywhere.

But the main attraction is the Alexander Nevsky cantata from 1970, broadcast from Amsterdam with the (unknown) Hilversum Radio Philharmonic. The sound is very good FM stereo. One can't expect the playing and singing to match Reiner's classic version from Chicago (on RCA), but Stokowski is much more flexible, capable of much more in the way of color and atmosphere. The chorus is a little rough-and-ready, but that actually helps: these are medieval Russian peasants, after all, not a Bach choir. The whole enterprise has fervor and grip, which Nevsky needs if it isn't to tumble into bombast and patriotic hokum. I imagine everyone at this concert was nailed to their seats--I was.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting, energetic, different, and wonderful.......2007-05-11

"Essential Classics", which has provided the world with many wonderful, delightfully cheap performances of the best known repertoire presents something a little different - a wonderful, delightfully cheap performance of little known pieces by some of the best Russian composers who have been overshadowed by their comrades.

No, you won't find Tchaikovsky here. You'll find Rimsky-Korsakov in something beyond "Scheherezade" (and boy do you find him). You'll find Balakirev, and will hopefully turn towards his other pieces (the incredible piano concertos on Hyperion [with Rimsky-Korsakov, as it so happens] are highly recommended!) and fall in love. You'll see another side of Mussorgsky, the one beyond "Pictures at an Exhibition". You'll spot Khachaturian, too. You'll meet Kabalevsky (who?) and Ivanov (again, who?). You'll find Gliere in his amazing form in "Russian Sailor's Dance" (my personal favorite - exciting, energetic, and awesome).

There are composers here you've heard of, but never heard. There are composers you know from one piece, and are curious for more. There are the obscure, the forgotten, and the brilliant. And it's cheap. If not found here, it's downloadable, but having it's preferable to purchase (thus the Amazon review).

          Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Rimsky Korsakov rocks!.......2002-05-23

i bought this CD solely for the purpose of owning once piece on here, Rimsky-Korsakov's Procession of Nobles. i have loved that piece ever since my band played it in high school. it is a great piece of music. oh, and all the others on here are awesome as well. :)

4 out of 5 stars Raucous Russian Collection.......2001-04-01

This Sony Essential Classics disc collects some lesser-known works by great nineteenth and twentieth century Russian composers, and some great works by some lesser-known Russian composers. "Russian Orchestral Works" features yet another in a long line of terrific performances by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. The most familiar compositions here by far are Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" (one of two pieces performed by Leopold Stokowski and the National Philharmonic Orchestra and not Ormandy) and "Procession of the Nobles," and Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance." The other pieces range from other excerpts from Rimsky-Korsakov operas, to less familiar works by Mussorgsky, Kabalevsky and Khachaturian, to three composers I had never heard prior to purchasing this CD -- Balakirev, Gliere and Ivanov. In all, the disc is sequenced intelligently, and the music played and recorded impeccably. This might not be the most "Essential" of the Sony Essential Classics series, but it will make a welcome addition to any classical collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Ormandy collection.......2001-04-01

Ormandy's skill never ceases to amaze me. This is an incredible collection of many of the greatest Russian Orchestral pieces, all performed excellently -- attention to dynamics, expression, and timing is all superb. The lion's share of this cd is devoted to Rimsky. A brilliant performance of Le Coq d'or, and of course the usual Procession of Nobles, Tumblers, and Flight of the Bumblebee. The big surprise is Ivan the Terrible, which is rarely performed (neither orchestral nor opera).

The rest is made largely of modern Russians, save a Balakirev piece and a brief excerpt of Mussorgsky, thankfully excluding Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and gang.

Worth it even just for the performances, if not for the pieces.
