Admittedly biased.......2006-04-20
I am, I admit, utterly biased. I worked for the show several years ago, my husband is one of the musicians (when you hear the sax on this CD, that's him) and I have a deep and abiding love and respect for the show, the music and above and beyond all else, the artists who make the experience of show and music what it is: Magical.
One of the suggestions I would make for any Cirque show is don't expect to understand it, just enjoy the energy swirling around - enjoy the music (and don't expect to understand the language, real language is rarely used - call it langue du Cirque - language of the Cirque - if you will - please also understand that most CD's only have a certain amount of time/space available - everything just couldn't fit - you can imagine I'm sure how difficult it was to choose the music to put on - but knowing the work of Benoit Jutras and the caliber of the musicians on the show then and now, these are some of the most professional, beautiful people - I'm not speaking of physical beauty, I'm speaking of artistic beauty - there is soul in this music, there is a sense of what the show is when you listen. Above all, there is everything from longing to celebration in this music. Cirque du Soleil is about losing yourself in a world of magic and artistry - why overanalyze it? Just enjoy the magic, enjoy the ride, enjoy the Cirque...
The music brought it all back.......2005-10-26
I've seen O twice. There's so much going on that you can't get it all the first time. The music brought each part back. If you've not seen one of these shows, DO IT. They're expensive, but when you get in, it makes sense. Can't wait to see Corteo when it comes this way!
Disappointing.......2005-09-26
True, there were some good memories from the show, but overall this CD didn't stack up to other greats (like Quidam).
Since O is such a visually-based show, I needed to be there again. Plus, I think my favourite 30 minutes of music from the 90 minute show didn't make the 60 minute CD. There was one song from the barge sketch in particular that just knocked my socks off, and I was hoping to find it on the CD, but didn't. Hence my disappointment.
Excellent Soundtrack to a Sublime show........2004-09-06
If you have not seen a cirque du soleil show, treat yourself to one. The ticket price may be unreasonable, but when you see the production and feats of dexterity, strength and skill you'll understand where your money is going. The soundtrack to the show "O" (phonetic for "eau" or water, which is the main theme for this performance) is a diligent sampling of the music you will hear at Bellagio in Las Vegas. I warn the buyers of this CD that the show runs approximately 90 minutes, and the CD is only 60 or so. Therefore if you were expecting extended mixes to match your "O" experience 100%, you will be disappointed. The overall music selection is okay as a stand alone. I'd use it for background music while doing something else. If you've seen the show, this will definetely spark some vivid memories. My personal favorite is about 5 minutes into the 5th track, Remous. (the barge sketch)
A beautiful piece of work by Cirque.....again!.......2004-01-09
What takes a Cirque show to another level is the meshing of amazing music into nearly every act. The music brings back the feeling of that night. If you saw the show, and loved it as I did, then the CD is a must have. I would recommend it even for people who have not seen the marvelous show known as "O". This very well be my second favorite Cirque soundtrack, behind Alegria(and Francesca Gagnon) of course;-)
After I saw the show at the Bellagio and left without this CD, I regretted it very much. These songs bring back the feeling of that magical night. The haunting and lamenting voice in Nostalgie brings back the show as if I were there again. Other favorites are Jeux d'Eau, Mer Noire, Tzelma......and of course "O".

Emotional Experience.......2005-05-15
I purchased my copy of this album as I exited the theater when I first saw Mystere in 1995. I was emotionally drained from seeing the performance, and am still moved by this music after 10 years. These performers are beyond compare, and regardless of your musical tastes, if you appreciate virtuosity you must hear this album. (Side note: I returned to Vegas in 2002 with my son and my wife, where we had the three center front row seats. I ended up on stage with the troupe playing the fool with the Baby. I love this show!)
Mystere~ cirque du soliel.......2004-08-28
BREATH-TAKING!!! I must admit the Mystere cd I own (and have almost worn-out from playing) is the Live version- recorded in May of '96. My first Cirque experience was seeing Mystere in Las Vegas in November of 2003, and I can still see the show in my mind from the opening of those little baby cries to the "to powerful for words", heart-pounding close of the Taikos solo. The music in itself is exteremely powerful, almost provocative, and alone is, would be a moving experience for anyone who has the ability and passion to "hear" the emotion such cultured, masterful composers and musicians express through melody and rythum. Benoit Jutrus and Rene Dupere ARE masters of their craft! Actually being able to experience the show live only adds to the intensity of that emotion. The show/music literally "surrounds" the audience, in a sense taking you on a journey through the very deepest of all human emotion. I can't compliment this composition/show enough. So my review is: buy the album(s) and definately see the show. I am absolutely planning on seeing the show again, and again- I am jealous of and completely understand the fan who has already seen the show six times! I literally get goose-bumps STILL every time I listen to this CD. #1 MUST HAVE/SEE!
I wish I could give this album 10 stars! It's the best!!!.......2004-06-01
I am a composer and a musician who is in awe of Mystere. I am also an author who either writes in absolute silence or with Mystere playing. Mystere has the purity of silence and a higher compliment I cannot pay any music. Oh, and by the way, this album ROCKS!!!!
The musical compositions and their perfect realization by an assembly of supremely talented musicians and singers is a gift to the world that I urge you to add to your music collection without delay. Mystere will add a new dimension to your appreciation for Cirque du Soleil - this music is as incredible as they are, and that is saying something!!
Outdated.......2004-03-07
Rumeurs, Birimbau, and Caravena are no longer used in the show. The other songs are still in the show, but two of them have been altered: En Ville and Rondo.
I recommend this album to those who have attended a performance of "Mystere" between 1993-1995 when all of the songs from this album were in the show and none were different. This album is a very strong and emotional compostion, though, due to its outdated nature, the album lacks some of the emotion of the show. Egypte and Ulysse are stronger in this album due to the fact that they contain choirs. This album is interesting to listen to if you have the more current "Mystere, Live" album.
See the live show, then buy this cd!.......2004-01-23
I love the CIRQUE DU SOLEIL! You have to really see it in person to fully appreciate the beauty of the music. When you are watching the various acts during the live performance you get lost in the music and almost forget you are watching a staged production. I have seen a few live Cirque Shows, including Mystere, Quidam, and O, and It truly is a spiritually, emotionally charged sensory experience. There are times you want to cry, times you want to laugh, and times you just find yourself in awe of what is going on...I reccomend seeing the live show first and then buying the music...but, the music alone is amazing and can be appreciated by itself. Don't pass up seeing this incredible show!

Stirring.......2006-04-06
I had never heard of Cirque Du Soleil when I saw this show...but I was in awe.
Afterwards, I bought this soundtrack. Sometimes the vocals from Erik Karol are not all that wonderful...but the instrumentals are stirring. I can sit and listen or dance around the room and I feel the emotion in the music. My personal favorites are Stella Errans, Ombra, Miracula Aeternitatis, Ballare, and Ninkou Latora.
Sometimes I'm not in the mood for it, but at times it can be beautiful and overall, amazing. This is creative, beautiful, colorful, and just gorgeous. I'd definitely recommend this, even if you haven't seen the show, because I didn't even remember what I'd seen by the time I bought this and it still holds a place in my heart.
Totally Amazed!!!.......2004-07-18
Let me just start off by saying that Dralion is the first CdS show I came across on Bravo. After seeing it for the first time, I couldn't wait for it to come on again!
Soon after seeing it yet again, I knew at that moment I had to get the DVD and the soundtrack. I have acquired both, and I think the CD is amazing! I was immediately blown away by Erik Karol's vocals once I heard the soundtrack. I'd have to choose "Stella Errans" and "Kamande" to be my favorite songs on the soundtrack. Although, I would have to give 5 stars to all of the songs on the soundtrack.
The music from Dralion is probably the best music I have heard from CdS. Again, I was blown away by the music on the Dralion soundtrack and recommend it for all Cirque fans out there!
This isn't the whole show..........2004-05-08
The reason I bought this CD was because I wanted the music from Victor Kee's Juggling act from the show. It wasn't on the cd. I was disappointed. The rest of the cd is okay, but it didn't have the song I wanted.
Lovely!.......2004-01-02
I bought this after seeing the show, and I am very impressed. Violaine Corradi (Who also composed VAREKAI) has brought music from around the world together in this spectacular work. Whether you have seen the show or not, this album is great.
NOTE: You might be a little shocked at the gender-bending vocal performance by counter-tenor Erik Karol, but it sounds great.
Good music, extraordinarily performed.......2003-08-20
I almost don't have words for how good this CD is. It's an eclectic blend of music from all over the world. For example, Celtic, African, and Japanese influences can be heard in "Kamande", while "Aborigines Jam" is inspired by tribal music. I know it sounds odd, but the composer manages to bring everything together in a way that is always harmonious, never jarring. The music on its own is very good, but what makes this disc stellar is the performance of singer Erik Karol, whose sensual, moving voice goes from bass all the way to countertenor. His middle range is decent, his lower range quite good and his upper range is simply phenomenal. "Stella Errans" is possibly some of the best countertenor work I've ever heard; it brought tears to my eyes. "Bellare", on which he sings tenor, and "Miracula Aeternetatis", on which he sings bass, are both almost as good.
Trust me, you won't regret buying this CD. And if that's not good enough, trust my friends -- at least six people have tried to swipe this CD from me!

Beautiful =).......2005-03-04
A long time ago I was visiting a very nice art website and they had "Atmadja" playing in the background. I was in love with the song, it was beautiful but creepy. I don't know how, but I happened to remember the name of the song. Soon it was taken off the website and I wanted to find it SO bad. At that time I barely knew Cirque du Soleil even existed. My search ended quickly, as I couldn't find it anywhere.
A while later they were showing Quidam at my city, but unfortunately I didn't have enough time to go by the time I figured out it was here. One reason was that my mom wanted to go too, but I don't think she wanted to go nearly as badly as I did. Why did I want to go so bad? I really really liked that one song.
I recently decided to look again, I have no idea what brought it on, but I was DESPERATE to download the song, though if I ever saw the CD I would have picked it up immediatly. Then I got a credit card. Oh Joy. I was so happy. I bought the album and have been listening to it non-stop so far. =). I can't complain that there are parts missing as people have said, because I haven't seen it. As a real first timer to the whole Quidam and even Cirque Soleil thing, I am delighted. The music is gorgeous.
I think almost anyone can enjoy this music, it's absolutely lovely. I just wish that it were a bit longer. Oh well, we can't have it all. =)
Cirque du Soleil Quidam.......2004-09-02
OH MY GOD!!! Right now I'm doing to things: writing this review, and listening to the song "Rivage". I am playing "Quidam" 24/7!!! At home, at work while jogging ANYWHERE!!! I love it. It's that simple.
Atmadja- Spooky, creepy, soft, and fantastic
Incantation- Energetic and upbeat
Marelle- Soft and soothing
Rivage- Extremly high energy, Loud and Booming*
Zydeko- Short and powerful
Let me Fall- Soft and Beautiful*
Innocence- A bit more classical
Carrousel-An exelellent song with a nice beat
Steel Dream- A nice song starting out slow and then geting funky
Seisouso- An good yet slow song
Reviil- A nice song quick at some parts and slow at others
Quidam- A FANTASTIC way to end the CD*
* My personal favorite
Short but Sweet.......2003-04-27
"Quidam" is a hard album to classify. It's not as stylish and flamboyant as "Saltimbanco," not as grand and echoing as "Mystere," not as atmospheric as "Varekai." What it is is...well...wierd. The music hops merrily from genre to genre, blindsiding the listener with unexpected twists and turns. Between them, the twelve tracks incorporate orchestral strings, vocal chants, bayou accordions, old-fashioned calliopes, middle eastern pipes, and steel drums -- and more. The album is a perfect echo of the show itself, which definitely represents the creative peak of Cirque du Soleil.
"Quidam" has only two flaws that I can see. One: at forty-six minutes, it's the shortest of all the Cirque albums. Two: a lot of music from the show is missing, and a lot of the tracks in the second half are completely unfamiliar. The trick is to forget all this and just enjoy what there is to enjoy. My favorite tracks include "Incantation" (exotic and fun to dance to), "Zydeko" (short but full of energy), "Steel Dream" (pulse-pounding percussion), and the fantastic closing track, "Quidam," which is wonderfully uplifting. The songs benefit greatly from the gorgeous singing of Audrey Brisson-Jutras and Mathieu Lavoie, and even the background singers sound nice and enthusiastic.
On the whole, I'd say that no Cirque fan should miss "Quidam." Once you get over its length and disconnection from the actual live music, you'll flip.

I love this cd! It's the best thing I've ever heard. I hope everyone enjoys it like I do!!!!!!!!!! I have to go, because my stupid brother wants to get on! But, I still could listen to this ALL DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A Mystical Musical Experience.......2003-01-18
This CD gives a glimpse into the experience of Quidam, a quite inspirational cd- that I can listen to over and over and still feel touched by it's intensity, as if I just left the show. An artistic masterpeice.

In 1942, just as Emanuel Feuermann was escaping the shadow of Pablo Casals, he died, the result of a botched routine surgery. He was only 39--Casals's age when he cut his first records in 1915. This irony was compounded in 1950, when the 76-year-old Casals decided to resume giving concerts after an 11-year retirement. He performed until he died at 97--more than 30 years after Feuermann. Casals and the cello are still almost synonymous in the public mind. But Feuermann, now largely forgotten, is actually the better cellist.
He was the first cellist to play with the ease of a great violinist. And no cellist since has matched, much less surpassed, his combination of precise intonation, depth and intensity of sound, clarity of articulation, and heart-piercing, but discerning, musicianship. Twelve performances on Music & Arts' Lost Feuermann reappear for the first time since their original 78 rpm release. That most of them are "lollipops" does not matter. Feuermann's natural command and faultless musicianship override any preconceptions about such popular works. Saint-Saens' "The Swan" and Bruch's "Kol Nidrei," as well as arrangements of Chopin's Nocturne in E-flat and the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," are delivered in a manner that substitutes nobility of expression for the usual treacle. Feuermann's unusually fast vibrato never falters; moments of heightened expression are neither cluttered nor cheapened by self-indulgent portamenti. Yet emotional warmth and luscious tone are never sacrificed on the altar of clear-eyed discipline and innate good taste. Feuermann's cello never groaned; it always sang. --Stephen Wigler
Customer Reviews:
Get it for the Japanese Songs.......2003-03-13
The first part of the transfer of this CD is considerably worse than what we can get elsewhere. The transfer of the last part, the European recordings, is slightly poorer than what we can get say from Pearl.
The only exceptions are the Japanese songs in the middle: they are the jewels of this record. But they consist of at most 1/5 of the total length.
The length of time is perhaps not a very good yardsick for music or indeed for any art. All the more so when in Feuermann we have what Toscanini hailed as "the greatest cellist" and what Casals called the "greatest artist of the century". True in the full sense of their word. Furthermore, there seems nowhere we can get these wonderful Japanese songs.
But on the other end of the balance, the general public particularly those who would prefer good sound to good music, might well be disappointed especially by the first half of the record where the recording left so much to be desired.
You may as well have all the Feuermann available.......2002-07-14
Well, OK I don't have everything by Feuermann, either, but I took a chance on this disc. Oddly, the earlier items are in much better sound. Sadly, if this artist had lived a normal life span we would have the best 'cello recordings of much of the repertoire possible. As it is, we have to settle for what we can get. There are probably more important Feuermann discs that you should get first, but this one may not be available forever. It is more of what you expect from this great performer, but miniatures.

Music like this is hard to come by.......2002-10-29
I don't normally write reviews for CD's. I usually stick to books, however, I have to make an exception for Cirque Du Soliel.
My dance teacher had first used the song Mystere for one of her performances and ever since then, I have been hooked on their music. I'm sad to see Rene Dupere leave Cirque. In my opinion, and in the opinion of many other musicians and composers, Rene is one of the best living composers. This album is perhaps a collection of his greatest peices. It does have one piece from Benoit Jutras but in my opinion, it doesn't match quite the level that Rene's are at.
If you are interested in Cirque's music, I think this CD would be the way to go.
A good album.......2001-06-01
This is a good way to start your Cirque Du Soleil music collection. Although it has some old music, it is still a good album.
A smattering of Cirque.......2001-05-01
Cirque de Soleil's colelction is in affect a best of CD, but it is hardly that. Certainly the pieces on this disc are the most memorable of each show, they seem to lack something. this is because Cirque de Soleil is an experience, each song on an album influences another, they must be listened to in order to truly experience them. The songs on this album aren't bad, in fact, they are excellent, but they aren't quite as good as if one were to purchase the albums tehy are taken from and listen to the whole album from start to finish.
Cirque du Soleil ~ Fantastique, Mysterious, Addictive.... ~.......2000-11-18
I bought this CD just last night. When I was little, I remember seeing Le Cirque Reinvente on television. I loved it so - the music, the performances - but I didn't know it's name, what it was called. I forgot about it for a time, seeing snippets of it whenever I just barely caught the end credits while surfing the channels. Forgot about it again and then the yearning to hear that distant yet familiar music came back and I did some research, finally discovering what the show was after so many years: Cirque du Soleil! The rest is history - I got hooked instantly and this is my first CD of the music. I wanted to know what the music was like before I bought it so I listened to sound samples from Amazon of the CDs and then decided to buy Collection at my music store. I listened to it last night, am listening to it now as I write this and here are my detailed impressions... You put the CD in and relax... The first sounds are those of a solitary basoon over " Ouveture " from the excellent "Le Cirque Reinvente." The drums pick up and it turns into a majestic melody of strength, dignity, and lingering of what's to come; it gave me spine tingles the moment I heard it! " Egypte " begins, seducingly quiet and calm and working into the delvement of the Egyptian gods and goddesses that rule this mysterious ancient land. The main voice could be a goddess herself, her voice is sweet and clear as she sings the primary lyrics of the song coyly, sure of herself, gently.
"Kumbalawe" is very pretty, carefree and reminded me strangely of 'haps a family of lions relaxing in the grassy savannah awaiting sleep to overtake them underneath the midday sun. It was a very good piece but one though I didn't particularily care for though you might be a different case altogether. "Suite Chinoise" starts as if a theme for royalty and if that was Dupere's mark he DID hit it. Another spine-tingler that turns into a loving, warm melody. Falling rain, then, and a worn, wood flute resounds through the rain forest. All of it collides to form a lovely piece that envelopes so many grand emotions in but only 10 minutes of sheer joy. " Querer" is passionate and sounds to me as being a very nice love song though not in my tastes. "Entracte" I was doubtful at the beginning but it wouldn't let me not like it - it took my chin in it's hand and made me look at it long and clear, to listen to it just for a few seconds more And there it was. I heard the drums kick in and the amazing melody begin in full throttle, pulsing with fun and energy and good humour. You could almost see the act going on in the stage of your mind. "Pokinai" was undescribably gorgeous! It reminded me of a lady hanging on the trapeze with her legs in almost completely darkness as a curled up ball and then unfolding very beautifully, silver rain falling all around her. Slowly, she begins to move and discover hands and feet. That innocence and curiousity gives way slightly to her complete joy that she's ALIVE! Then a young man appears and she discovers young love, they doing various moves in the air.... These are the impressions I get when I listen to this song. "Alegria" was impressive music-wise as well as impressive in vocal. The main voice has a strong, sultry voice that seems to have every possible element in perfect feminity. Even though it probably wasn't meant as a love song, it comes across as such and I have no hesitation in saying it was a flawless piece that reminded me of tan-shaded shadows floating over two lovers... "Kalimando" starts camly with natural sounds taking the spotlight, birds singing, the light and gentle strains of water. It was a ground-centring piece after all the energy and fast-paced pieces before it. The lyrics almost seem to say in their foreign, mysterious tongue, " Time to rest." "Grosse Femme" was a lively melody that sounded a bit like a carousel-horse tune that if you play really loud *grin* it sounds as if you are truly on a merry-go-round at a circus during the night, the cool air swirling around you like mist...
So, in conclusion of my journey into Cirque du Soleil, I have gone into ectasy and back again. I have been happy, sad, nostalgic, dignified, mysterious, and a whole lot more in the expanse of this one CD. If that isn't magic, nothing is.
Correction.......1999-07-22
just wanted to fix a slip in my review- I said Kalandero is in Mystere- it is actually in Alegria. When I said Mystere I was thinking of the song Birimbau- both are track 3 on their respective CDs.
