Building on the enormous success of the first Agnus Dei disc, its successor offers more of the same musical mood, but with a few surprises too. One of the hits of the first album was John Cameron's arrangement of Elgar's Nimrod, using the words of the Lux Aeterna. Here he really rolls his sleeves up and similarly tackles the Albinoni-Giazzoto Adagio (using the words of the Beatitudes) and the Intermezzo from Bizet's second L'Arlésienne Suite (using the text of the Agnus Dei). The role of the orchestra (the excellent ensemble Capricorn) has been expanded, and Edward Higginbottom himself has arranged a delicious string septet accompaniment to Brahms's Geistliches Lied. Much of the music is of the kind that the choir obviously eats for breakfast--which is not to say that they ever sound bland or tired, just at home. The one weak track is Monteverdi's Beatus Vir, which needs voices of more sophistication and agility than the boys can provide. That aside, this is another album that should do their reputation no harm. --Warwick Thompson

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Could be better.......2006-07-08

After owning Agnus Dei I for years, and somehow misplacing the CD, I decided to buy both I and II from Amazon. Of the CD's, I is still my favorite. Agnus Dei II is a decent CD, but it doesn't have the fluidity or the dynamics that the first disk has. I guess I got spoiled with the first disk.

    4 out of 5 stars Good choral CD, but . . . .......2006-01-22

Agnus Dei II is a really good choral CD with a more otherworldly sound than most choral offerings. But the first Agnus Dei is better, amazing really. Own both, but if you only want one, get the first one.

    1 out of 5 stars WTH?.......2005-07-14

I bought this CD because it said Eamon as an artist. WTH? I can't find Eamon anywhere on this CD. It says Eamon on the other one, but I'm not even going to try. Never again will a buy a CD associated with Agnus Dei.

LAST WORD: Don't buy this if your buying it for Eamon music.

3 out of 5 stars Albonini's Adagio (Beatitudes) is an Italianate emotion feas.......1999-06-11

I happened upon this album while looking for some choral works for a church choir. Not schooled in the literature, I had never heard of Tomaso Albinoni. His Adagio ("Beatitudes") is a choral emotion feast in Italian style, the likes of which I have never heard before. Unless...did the Coppollas (pere et fils) use it in the soundtrack to Godfather 3? I'm not sure. Great piece. The rest of the album is okay. Standard fare.

    4 out of 5 stars Awesome music - fidelity a bit lacking.......1999-02-16

The opening song "The Beatitudes" by Albinoni is incredibly moving, so much so that the other songs have a hard time comparing. Overall, excellent, although the fidelity could be greatly improved. I had to crank up my volume 30-40% higher to achieve a comparable volume and noticed some distortion (in the recording, not my system) that was a bit distracting. Still, an outstanding CD.

      5 out of 5 stars GLORIOUS!.......2006-03-28

Wow- is the first word that comes to mind in regards to this boxed set. This set is what made me fall in love with the Taverner Consort under the direction of Andrew Parrott. His interpretations of such hits as Gabrielli's "In eclesiis" and Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" have breathed new life into this genre. I've not heard the solo of "The Four Seasons" played with as much zeal, as much independent, stylized freedom. Oh! I almost forgot- Andrew's rendition of Vivaldi's "Gloria" is not to be missed. While not as robust as a choral setting, this version lands ever so sweetly on the ear. This is a must-have boxed set and a great introduction to Andrew Parrot and the Taverner Consort.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series.......2003-09-29

I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.

        5 out of 5 stars A glorious sharing.......2003-12-14

Although listed as being by "various artists", these two discs were recorded in 1996 and 1997, respectively, by the monks and choirboys of Downside Abbey and School (near Bath, in England).

The discs represents a sharing with the rest of the world of the music which brings together the two communities, of monks and schoolboys, at masses in the Abbey.

The quality of the recording on disc 1 is superior to that on the later disc, but both convey the beauty and simplicity of the religious music and plainsong which lie at the heart of Benedictine communities. You do not have to be religious, yourself, to enjoy the sense of peace and serenity conveyed by the pieces. Relax and let the sound wash over you.

The title, "Gregorian Chillout", tends to belittle the faith which underlies the music, but do not let this put you off. Buy these and enjoy them to their fullest. You will not be disappointed.

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.

The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker

          5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11

In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.

We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.

Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.

          4 out of 5 stars A- for effort.......2006-02-23

This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.

The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.

5 out of 5 stars What can you say?.......2003-01-03

I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?

How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.

One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.

So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.

Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

This is, I suspect, the least well-known of the three seasonal discs released during the last few years by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir, yet it is arguably the best performance they have ever given on record.

A more appropriate title would perhaps be "Lent to Easter at St. Paul's," since the programme forms a sequence beginning with music for Lent, passing through the intensely solemn and emotionally-charged atmosphere of Passiontide before ending with some of the gems that traditionally accompany Easter Day services in many churches. The music for this sequence is all very striking, running the whole gamut of emotions from sadness to joy, sorrow to hope and despair to unalloyed delight.

The disc begins with "The Lent Prose," a plainchant responsory sung here to an English translation published in the New English Hymnal amongst other collections. One might not think that plainchant and the massive acoustic of St. Paul's would go terribly well together, but in this case they do, quite magically. Following it is a four-part introit by Richard Farrant, "Call to remembrance, O Lord," which is an epitome of Tudor polyphony at its most moving and effective. Also effective, and even simpler, is Edward Bairstow's setting of verses from the Lamentations of Jeremiah: whilst Master of Music at York Minster, he composed a number of works in this vein, that are essentially Anglican psalm chants strung together. The atmosphere created in this extremely simple music, however, is truly remarkable. The inclusion of the chorus with treble duet from Mendelssohn's "Hymn of Praise" - "I waited for the Lord" - shows that music for Lent is not always solemn, and that the joy of the Easter message can still permeate Lent with a sense of hope.

The Passiontide music itself is even more emotionally-charged. Two important contributions to the choral repertoire for Passiontide are represented here: John Sanders' setting of "The Reproaches" juxtaposes elements of plainchant and a twentieth-century harmonic idiom to produce a very powerful and awe-inspiring work, fitting the text superbly (I can never forget the opening statement of "O my people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you?" - it is haunting above anything else.) Brian Chapple's motet "Ecce lignum crucis" is more specific to the St. Paul's Cathedral Choir as it was written for them. It is a stark piece, dignified and if anything understated, yet very moving and by all means accessible - I wonder why it isn't heard more often elsewhere in English cathedrals... "Christus factus est pro nobis" is one of the most famous of Bruckner's unaccompanied motets, and here receives an absolutely stunning performance, as draining to listen to as it must have been to record. Similar intensity is brought by the choir to Lotti's famous eight-part setting of "Crucifixus etiam pro nobis" - a staple of cathedral choirs during Passiontide. In complete contrast - yet no less moving - is the three-verse hymn "Drop, drop slow tears" by Orlando Gibbons, performed here with one verse by unaccompanied trebles, then in four-part harmony, then finally with a solo treble (Anthony Way, incidentally, 'before he was famous') and the other voices humming. I am constantly amazed at how this arrangement can bring out emotions deeper even than the more 'sophisticated' through-composed works that precede it in this programme...

Easter is ushered in with another hymn: Charles Wood's harmonisation of a Dutch carol set to the words "This joyful Eastertide," which is guaranteed to appear on church music lists throughout the Christian world on Easter Day each year. It is always like a breath of fresh air, evocative of the fresh feeling that somehow always seems to emerge in worship on an Easter Sunday. Bairstow's setting of Psalm 114 is an Eastertide companion piece to his "Lamentation" - it too consists of a couple of related psalm chants, with an imaginative use of the organ to reflect "the presence of the God of Jacob." The Tudor style of Church Music is represented again in Peter Philips' intricate and joyful motet "Ecce vincit Leo;" at the end of the sequence is Britten's "Te Deum" in C, which sets a seal on the Eastertide feeling with its building of a cheerful atmosphere out of a quiet beginning, together with quirky rhythms and a glorious central section with a prominent part for an outstanding treble soloist.

As hinted above, this wonderful programme sounds glorious in the famed St. Paul's acoustic, but this is partly because the choir sings it so magnificently. John Scott draws the contrasting emotions out of them most intuitively; he is finely assisted by the playing of Andrew Lucas and his team of soloists (three trebles and two basses, all drawn from the choir) is immaculate.
Utterly recommendable, particularly for being such a clear window on a season of the Church's year that has produced such a fine body of music. (And even if you don't go in for the elements of worship at the heart of this programme, it is still worth hearing for the excellent performance St. Paul's Cathedral Choir.)
