Susan Stroman's Contact stirred up a hornets' nest of controversy by winning the 2000 Tony Award for Best Musical. The fact that the music for the dance play was entirely prerecorded, and mostly from classic sources didn't sit well with either traditionalists or union musicians. So what exactly do you get on the CD, Contact: Music from the Broadway Show? The first segment of the three-section show takes place in the French countryside and is represented by a Stephane Grappelli recording of "My Heart Stood Still." The second part is a romantic fantasy accompanied by Leonard Bernstein recordings of Grieg, Tchaikovsky, and Bizet. The most famous segment portrays modern New Yorkers and the music they swing dance to: classic pop (Dion, the Beach Boys), neo-swing bands (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Royal Crown Revue), and of course the show's defining number, Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible."

It's extremely odd to listen to a CD representing four Tony-winning achievements and not be able to enjoy three of them: Stroman's choreography, and Karen Ziemba and Boyd Gaines's dancing/acting (not to mention Deborah Yates's striking Girl in the Yellow Dress). Fortunately for Gaines, he actually appears on this CD, as his new, suave rendition of "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" replaces the show's usual Dean Martin recording. Comparable to the CD of music used in Peter Shaffer's Amadeus, Contact: Music from the Broadway Show is without question a useful souvenir of an innovative, invigorating theater experience (only a few numbers are missing from the 56-minute CD), but as a listening experience, it's a real mixed bag. --David Horiuchi

Diverse and original: A sure bet.......2006-07-09

If you thought you had listened to everything about Broadway tunes, wait and listen to this one: it will leave you breathless! It's such a unique, original and wonderful musical difficult to match with any other one. Variation is the word here: the music goes from classical themes (the "Did you move?" themes)to modern tunes in a most attractive manner. This is one of those CD's that you may play over and over again, and never get tired of it. I would highly recommend it to all music lovers, since the musical range is so wide that it will thrill all audiences.

Never have I seen a show as wonderful as this. I'd do almost anything for a video of it? Any possiblility?

Contact is the best musical that I have ever seen. This is defiantly one of the reasons why I bought the CD. The reason why the musical is great is because everything ties in beautifully with the music. If you have seen the play, I defiantly recommend buying the CD, after seeing it how could you not? After I saw the play I loved it, but thought that 30 buck or whatever they were selling it for in the lobby after the show was way too much. So I waited and bought it at a media store. It was one of the best investments I've made concerning music. All my memories of the play flooded back. If however you have not seen the play, the music is still superb. My best friend has never seen the play but I let her listen to my CD and her favorite song ever is now Farandole (#4). So even w/o the background of the play, the music is still very powerful. The other uniquely great thing about this play is the fact that it has so many different styles and types of music. That alone makes it a great addition to anyone's collection. It will open you up to different styles of music which you might not have been able to appreciate before. It's a mind blowing play and a mind blowing CD with eclectic, imaginative, and powerful music.

I had the pleasure of seing this show on the stage, and then the next day I got the CD. However, I do have to say that you would enjoy this CD better if you saw the musical first. It would all then make sence. Otherwise, the music is great, and all of the songs are very enjoyable. I recomend this CD to anybody who is into the musical theatre.

Recorded Music can be good!.......2002-03-09

Many people say that "Contact" is bad, because it is not live music. I sad that too, until I bought the CD. Having unlike music is great for this type of thing. Where are you ever again going to have a show where Leonard Bernstein conduct the New York Philharmonic in Anitra's Dance (from Peer Gynt Suite No 1) or The Waltz Eugene (from Eugene Onegin, Op 24) or Farandole (from L'Arlesienne Suite No 2) and in the same CD find "Do You Wanna Dance?" from The Beach Boys? The CD also contains one of my favorite violin peaces that I have ever heard, "My Heart Stood Still" and has a great jazz peace, "Put A Lid On It" by the Squirrel Nut Zippers. This CD really has the best of all categories of music and is a must!

In 1942, just as Emanuel Feuermann was escaping the shadow of Pablo Casals, he died, the result of a botched routine surgery. He was only 39--Casals's age when he cut his first records in 1915. This irony was compounded in 1950, when the 76-year-old Casals decided to resume giving concerts after an 11-year retirement. He performed until he died at 97--more than 30 years after Feuermann. Casals and the cello are still almost synonymous in the public mind. But Feuermann, now largely forgotten, is actually the better cellist.

He was the first cellist to play with the ease of a great violinist. And no cellist since has matched, much less surpassed, his combination of precise intonation, depth and intensity of sound, clarity of articulation, and heart-piercing, but discerning, musicianship. Twelve performances on Music & Arts' Lost Feuermann reappear for the first time since their original 78 rpm release. That most of them are "lollipops" does not matter. Feuermann's natural command and faultless musicianship override any preconceptions about such popular works. Saint-Saens' "The Swan" and Bruch's "Kol Nidrei," as well as arrangements of Chopin's Nocturne in E-flat and the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," are delivered in a manner that substitutes nobility of expression for the usual treacle. Feuermann's unusually fast vibrato never falters; moments of heightened expression are neither cluttered nor cheapened by self-indulgent portamenti. Yet emotional warmth and luscious tone are never sacrificed on the altar of clear-eyed discipline and innate good taste. Feuermann's cello never groaned; it always sang. --Stephen Wigler

Album Description

In this program of familiar classics, ten of the works are preceded by preambules by Adolf von Henselt (1814-1889). A delightful genre that has faded from use during this century, a preambule (often called "prelude"), was a very short piece played before a larger work to prepare the listener for the tonality and mood to follow. These miniatures were improvised or composed to sound improvised. The practice of performing preambules is old, the earliest written examples dating back to the 15th century. Preambules were in vogue among pianists throughout the Classical and Romantic eras. Mozart wrote four of them (Capriccio, K. 395); Moscheles, fifty; Clementi, at least thirty; and Hummel, twenty-four. Among the most beautiful and effective is Henselt's set of twenty-four which covers all the major and minor keys.
