Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars First Class My Dear!.......2005-10-06

This is beautiful collection of Gunter Treptow. Preiser never fails to give the very best in careful remastering.

Treptow's voice is a virile, richly ringing, Italianate, and well equalized voice. His was a very Heroic Tenor! He sings in the classic style, no scooping, slurring, and defintely no changing the tempi. The aria from IL Tabarro is so well sung that you would need to search far and wide to find one to compare it to, and his final high Bb is a note of perfect proportion. Though a Wagnerian, he would have done well with Spontini, Cherubini, and Bellini's Pollione in Norma. His Notung! from Siegfried is in a class by itself and no tenor ever sang it like Treptow.

At his best, he is almost without reproach, but that aural sensation of tightness is always there. If he fails to fall flowingly or meltingly on the ears, as does Lorenz, he compensates with that well equalized, forward, round and spontaneous vocalism. There is so much honesty in his voice, so much truth, and beauty....and very beautiful it was.

Enjoy!
