The presence of animals at the Nativity adds a special note of tenderness and reminds us of the unity of all Creation and of the sacredness of all Nature." Carol Wood, the artist.

X.J. Kennedy, one of America's finest poets, is also known for his children's books, among them, The Beasts of Bethlehem. He has received awards from the Academy of American Poets, the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and the University of the South. Kennedy and his wife Dorothy have collaborated on several books and jointly received an award from the National Council of Teachers of English for excellence in children's poetry.

Carol Wood has spent much of her career bringing together the related worlds of poetry and the harp. She is a professor of Medieval Literature at McNeese University and has published, lectured, and performed widely on both the concert and the Celtic harp. Her previous recording, The Chaucer Songbook (Eroica Classical Recordings), is a collection of songs drawn from Chaucer's works.

Carol Wood plays Celtic harp on all tracks except "The Carol of the Birds," on which she plays pedal harp. All music composed or arranged by Carol Wood.

To anyone who appreciates choral music, or even some of you who only like to listen to it during the holidays, this is the album for you. The music is so familiar, but so aesthetically pleasing to listen to. The choir sounds clear and majestic from the clear sounds of the basses to the beautiful pings of the sopranos. Forget the garbbled sounds of Choirs with people who think that singing in Forte the whole way through is beautiful. This is angelic, yet very fun to listen to. Enjoyment for the whole family. 5 Stars

As has been the case with most DWS recordings, this is truly a classic. Beautifully sung, with new and interesting arrangements of traditional favorites, this disc is a must for all holiday music and DWS fans. Of note are Stephen Paulus' rhythmic "The Holly and the Ivy" and Praetorius' beautiful "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming" arranged by Jan Sandström. I highly recommend this recording.

I was trying to purchase the original Harry Simeone Chorale's Drummer Boy and received this. It was okay, a mixture of songs, but I treasure the original one. Very short album, but price was good, so I was not disappointed.

I have this cd and I love it because I love choral singing at Christmas but I am still looking for the first Harry Simeone Chorale album I ever bought. It is also titled " The Little Drummer Boy" , was released in 1981 by Holiday Records, a product of Phoenix Entertainment and Talent, distributed by Audiofidelity Enterprises, Inc. Why do I eagerly search the Christmas cd releases every year? I'm looking for 'A Simple Prayer', the absolute best version of the Prayer of St. Francis I have ever heard. (actually the only commercial version I have ever heard, although I get to sing a different song based on the same prayer at my church every once in a while). The man who sings the actual prayer on my album has a wonderful voice that makes me shiver every time I hear the song. I know it's not a 'Christmas ' song but I keep hoping it will show up one of these days. In the meantime, I keep and play my lp every year. Jo Haase

5 out of 5 stars Mom's Recording: The Little Drummer Boy........2006-11-09

This record was done by my Mother, Frances Wyatt, and a group of her musical buddies from the old "Voice of Firestone" days. She is the one singing the soprano solo's on the album and can be heard above the others in the choral works. Mom was one of the lyric sopranos soloists on the "Voice of Firestone" ABC-TV program who became easily recognized here on the streets of NYC in the late 1950's and early 1960's. She also toured with Fred Warings Pennsylvanians extensively. Pretty cool!

I am proud that so many people have enjoyed this album over the years!

We, her family and children, grew up listening to this album along with her many Fred Waring recordings.

This one simple album, through years of continued sales, rocketed off the charts eclipsing all sales of LP's by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and every Pop musical group from L.A. to London. It made it into the Guinness Book of World Records! : A distinction it held for over 20 years!

When The Guiness people called us at home, we of course though it was some kind of prank. It wasn't.

I hope you truly enjoy this album and pass it on to your kids.

My mother died October 30, 2006. I will never forget her voice.

British composer Benjamin Britten's Ceremony Of Carols is an Advent staple. In Conrad Susa's Carols & Lullabies - Christmas In The Southwest, the work now has an American companion piece. Initially inspired by festive Spanish-language songs that are typically sung in Arizona, the work incorporates traditional material from Catalonia, Puerto Rico, Castile, Andalusia, and Mexico. It is getting more difficult each Christmas Season to find discs that offer Christmas choral music that is infused with a sense of "rootedness" borne out of time-hewn tradition and at the same time compliments--rather than rehashes--the existing repertoire of age-old Christmas choral music.

This is one of those rare discs that accomplishes this difficult task of offering a different approach to Christmas choral without slipping into the secular/contemporary (which usually strips all meaning and "rootedness" from Christmas). It does so by continuing to mine selections from Christmas traditions; however, the traditions are beyond the historical milieu of Olde Europe.

At least half the selections here hail from Hispanic origins. If I know anything about Hispanic culture (not much, but I live in the American Southwest), it is nothing if not traditional and rooted, yet passionate and alive.

If you are looking for a Christmas disc that can compliment (i.e., blend with but not duplicating) existing Christmas choral traditions, this is a "must-have" disc for your Christmas collection.

            "I have loved X.J. Kennedy's cycle of poems, 'The Beasts of Bethlehem,' since I first heard him read some of them years ago. They are a new element in the rich traditions associating animals with the Christmas story. The presence of animals at the Nativity adds a special note of tenderness and reminds us of the unity of all Creation and of the sacredness of all Nature." Carol Wood, the artist.

            X.J. Kennedy, one of America's finest poets, is also known for his children's books, among them, The Beasts of Bethlehem. He has received awards from the Academy of American Poets, the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and the University of the South. Kennedy and his wife Dorothy have collaborated on several books and jointly received an award from the National Council of Teachers of English for excellence in children's poetry.

            Carol Wood has spent much of her career bringing together the related worlds of poetry and the harp. She is a professor of Medieval Literature at McNeese University and has published, lectured, and performed widely on both the concert and the Celtic harp. Her previous recording, The Chaucer Songbook (Eroica Classical Recordings), is a collection of songs drawn from Chaucer's works.

            Carol Wood plays Celtic harp on all tracks except "The Carol of the Birds," on which she plays pedal harp. All music composed or arranged by Carol Wood.
