Angèle Dubeau is a remarkable violinist, and here, she and her all-woman, 12-strong (including herself) group, La Pieta, tackle some of the showiest---and most interesting---virtuoso pieces composed or transposed for solo violin and strings, in various combinations, and occasionally featuring a piano. The violin tone at the start of Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre has a warmth which stays with us throughout the disc, despite the fact that so many of the pieces are razzle-dazzle. Hearing the delicious can-can from the overture to Orpheus in the Underworld so thrillingly played, with as much emphasis on the piano as the violin, is a treat, and the "Fire dance" from El amor brujo positively throbs. There's great skill---even daring---in the Tartini "Devil's Trill" sonata and a Boccherini Sonata, but the string tone never turns strident. And as a complete surprise, Dubeau and her group offer an arrangement of The Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black" which teases and riffs before getting into the melody, then plays it in the lower reaches of the instrument, and is then joined by the piano, allowing it to reach upwards and jazzily improvise---and then she throws in a moment or two of "Sympathy for the Devil" (!) before it concludes with the original melody. There are other joys on this CD as well---this is not your everyday violin bon-bon recital. It's all highly recommended. --Robert Levine
Album Description
This mischievious recital celebrates works inspired by the Devil: from Tartini's Devil's Trill, written after the composer dreamt that he had sold his soul to the Devil, to the infernal whirlwinds of Saint-Saën's Danse Macabre and Dompierre's Les Beautés du diable, composed specifically for La Pietà. It also pays homage to Paganini, the famed violinist who once confided to a friend that the Devil led him by the hand. This program shows an impish sense of humor as well... it features a unique arrangement of The Rolling Stones' Paint it Black and Sympathy for the Devil! Angèle Dubeau is one of Canada's most prominent recording artists. belonging to the exclusive group of Canadian classical soloists who can boast of having attained "gold" sales status. She is also the founder and director La Pietá. This CD is packaged with a bonus DVD featuring video clips and live concert excerpts.

FABULOUS!.......2007-02-15
I ADORE this CD. I first heard it on the local classical music station and my ears picked right up. "What IS that?" It was so alive, so vibrant. The station only plays it about once a year, but each time it catches my attention. "Ah, that's Angele Dubeau." The selections are a mix of new and old. Two of the new pieces are by Francois Dompierre; his "Le Diable matou" is one of my favorites. I play this CD over and over and over...
I disagree with the reviewer who said you must love violin music to enjoy this. I do enjoy the violin, but I think the CD's power and reach go far beyond violin lovers.
The CD also includes a DVD of concert excerpts.
Give this CD a try. I'm so glad I did.
Eduardo Carlos Leon.......2007-02-01
The sound is tight and fresh. But take heed--only a person who love`s violin works would enjoy this c-d.And i would be one of those persons.ESP.Hot Women with violins!!!
Unique and pleasant........2006-12-23
It is refreshing to hear something new. The tracks are old favorites but the sound is new. Different. And in a good way.
Not the same old interpretations sped up or slowed down. But a genuine new groove down a familiar road.
She is a great violinist and has a knack for interplay with the rest of the band. It's not a flashy highly technical performance like you may expect from Perlman or Mutter. But not on the emotional ragged edge like Sonnenberg. But something in between with a new twist.
Emotional, Powerful, Fizzy.......2005-05-19
Long a stodgy devotee of baroque music, with the first few notes of this strong stuff I became an addict. Over and over again I play this CD, never quite anticipating the power and emotional bang of the music as it plays - even though I know the notes by now. If you ever studied Walter Piston's "harmony" the structures and transitions are back-of-the-book stuff, but the push is all elemental, basic, built-in, the familiar 1-4-5 with musical sequins, trampolines, backflips, and gelginite. Wow. And then some.
I'm so besotted, I had a couple of 13-year old boys (my son and a friend) listen to it in the car one day. They were bug-eyed after a couple of cuts, and not with horror. Now they ask for it, and yell with glee when the musical tension breaks over their heads in crashing chords.
Can I add a few more stars?
Infernal Violins.......2004-04-12
This music is fantastic. Because the violin she uses is a Stradovarius, the music pours like liquid velvet out of it. The choices of compositions are fantastic also. I think her interpretation of them along with the violin and her back-up group are what make this album so outstanding.

Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09
Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.
It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.
The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

Customer Reviews:
Well played technically ,but..........2004-03-30
I have two major issues with this cd:
1) why was the William Tell overture omitted? Anyone who has heard it in its 12 minute entirety cannot help but be impressed. It's one of the best, if not the best, overture Rossini wrote. Listen to Gardelli or Chailly conduct this overture in their respective versions of the entire opera.
2) I enjoy Orpheus and admire their technique, but at times they can sound a bit too mechanical. In this issue, I found that they were unable to convey some of Rossini's playfulness, warmth and humor.
So with all due respect, I cannot share the enthusiasm of others regarding this disc.
One of the Greatest Living Orchestras in the World.......2000-11-09
Open your mind and strap on your classical thrill belt!
This orchestra is one of the greatest groups in the modern clasical circuit. One amazing factor in their success is that they have NO CONDUCTOR! Their perfomances are innovative, well articulated, and very energetic. The phrasing is outstanding. This group plays very precisely and uniformly. The balance is incredible! I cannot say enough about this orchestra--see for yourself. You will not be disappointed! Buy this CD- it's the best recording of Rossini I think I'll ever be graced to hear on modern instruments. Orpheus is God's fresh gift to the humdrum of stale ensembles. What a great price, too!
Outstanding CD.......2000-05-11
The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra plays these pieces better than they have ever been played. The performance is astoundingly clean. The recording is exemplary. The price is almost criminally low. Why Deutsche Grammophon took this out of print in the first place is a mystery. The fact that they've reissued it at midprice is a GIFT to the civilized world. The same could be said of their reissue of Emerson doing the Dvorak 12th quartet, Tchaikovsky 1st, and Borodin 2d quartets. The BEST part of this CD is that the performances are using ORIGINAL orchestrations--orchestrations that have inexplicably fallen out of practice in concert performances of the overtures--that let Rossini's humor in the pieces shine through (e.g. piccolo rather than flute in Italiana in Algeri). Even if you have a recording of Rossini overtures, this one uses the original orchestrations, includes some rarer overtures, and has the clarinet bonus track, and I guarantee the performances are better than any ever recorded. In sum, buy this CD now and be glad for the rest of your life that you did.
A must buy!.......1999-12-02
You would like this CD before you have even bought it. The clarinet player is just great. It is a great orchestration and the sound quality is great. I have nothing bad to say about the CD. Don't take my word for it just buy it. Are you trippin'! Buy this CD jigga'!

Technical Debacle.......2004-12-19
The sound quality on the cd I received from an Amazon merchant was extremely poor, kind of a tinny, fuzzy mess, and I am deeply disappointed in this purchase. The musicianship was mediocre. I wasted my money.

Customer Reviews:
Packed with good - but not great - performances.......2002-02-22
This, the third volume of Deutsche Grammophon's Complete Beethoven Edition, features all the orchestral works and stage music he wrote outside of symphony and opera. Much of the music featured in this set is not great Beethoven; there are very early, developmental or unambitious works (for example, all the minuets and contredanses, which date from the 1790s, when he was in his twenties), and there are many pieces which are just not the beneficiary of Beethoven's best writing (he seems to be on automatic pilot for some of the incidental music, including "The Ruins of Athens" and "King Stephen"). Still, there are many gems in this set - more than enough to justify buying it. The "Ritterballet," a very early work, is absolutely delightful, and is given a delightful performance by - surprise, surprise - the ubiquitous Karajan. The incidental music to "Egmont," of which only the Overture is well known, is real, inspired Beethoven, and is given a fine performance by Abbado and Studer. Even the contredanses and minuets have their good moments. One of them in particular (Contredanse No. 7) cries out for you to listen to it, because that's the one Beethoven used as the basis of not only parts of the ballet "Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus," and the "Eroica" Variations for piano, but also the finale of the "Eroica" Symphony! All of the contredanses and minuets are given sensitively and charmingly by Marriner and the ASMF.
There is more great music in this set - for example, the overtures ("Coriolan" and "Egmont" especially, but also "Die Ruinen von Athens," "Zur Namensfeier," "König Stephan," "Die Weihe des Hauses"), some of which are just as magnificent as his symphonies. I'm thinking in particular of "Coriolan," Op. 62, which is one of the most intense, tragic, furious pieces he ever wrote (it's in his "rage" key, C minor). Unfortunately, many of these overtures are entrusted to Claudio Abbado, and I can't say he does a very good job with them. "Coriolan" in particular suffers from a lack of intensity, which is unbelievable considering the intensity of the work. The congested recording (early digital) does not help. (If you want to hear a tremendous recording of the "Coriolan," look to Volume 20 of the CBE and Furtwängler!) The other works are well-performed, including Karajan's distinguished account of Beethoven's potboiler "Wellingtons Sieg."
Overall, it is disappointing to find that the best performances have been given to the automatic pilot works, while the towering masterpieces which cry out for great performances have been given mediocre performances. However, given the superlative quality of the booklet (multiple essays by distinguished musicologists, color paintings reproduced, artist biographies, etc.), the worthy quality of most of the performances and, perhaps most importantly, the scarcity of other performances of this music, there are many reasons why this is worth buying.

not so laid back minimalism from fine, cool Cal Ear Unit.......2000-05-14
Louis Andriessen is a facinating minimalist, although he probably wouldn't like that label. He really isn't a minimalist more a colourist. You will not find linear-like rhythmic propulsion ad nauseum as you might find in Phil Glass,Steve Reich and John Adams, the three High Buddhas of the language.Instead Andriessen is nourished by Jazz, and the timbral language of the post-Webern avant-garde, where the others Glass and Reich were enamored over the mysteries and modes of the East studying with mentor virtuosi there. Andriessen studied with Luciano Berio keeping this horizon well in the forefront of his creativity and cultural values of European post-war expression. You can call him an activist composer in many respects, he got swept into the Anti-War Times, even collectivizing his compositions, collaborating with other Dutch composers on a single work, Reconstructie,an opera, (1968-1969).Also however he founded practical musical groups with a collective-democratic-like base. Many of his fellow musicians thought all this was condescending at times, the more academic strains on the Dutch scene, and they were right to a degree. But he progressed however well beyond the self-indulgent politics of the Sixties, transcending these social-politico experiments in music. His De Staat,an oratorio-like work, based on Plato revelaed great sophistication in dealing with text and the voice, something he learned from Berio. This proved successful and was a widely played work which helped put his name on the map. His minimalism however remains the focus of his aesthetic as well as direct accessible communication. This aesthtic is one more of density, and points of timbral association, dealing with blocks, chunks, and handfulls of sound, usually associating similar or identical sonoric families, like vibraphone and flute(metal),or woodblocks and marimba (wood). His rhythms are direct, and ponderous, usually very simple. Zilver (Dutch for silver) exhibits a coldness based on a determinate form from Bach's choral variations. Here a long melody gets tossed around the ensemble transforming the timbre, usually a scale descending. Andriessen likes to gaze at his sounds, taking time, allowing us to absorb them as well.Nothing is rushed, and the coldness of the sound, almost impersonal contributes to the listening expereience, it is more an engaged sound as a result. It was hard to shut Zilver off once on , as monotonous as sometimes this music can get. Still you stick with it and the sounds become poetic friends. The gestures here are severe, ringing sonorities, relentless, passive yet bold and authoritative, like a strong geometric shape that doesn't compromise its linear integrity, like a triangle,or parallelogram. In contrast Disco(no reference here to the dance, sorry),is more spiky, and warm, friendlier actually with the violin showing off, nasel thinness is proclaimed, very beautiful. My favorite here however is a solo for harpischord Overture to Orpheus, the microphone is placed well near the strings, so the percussive after shocks become part of the music, intended or not. The result is gentle, disarming and beautiful almost harp or zither like. Worker's Union by contrast is again severe and is from 1975, and a collective experiment, a leftover I suspect, and is simply a rhythm to be played very loudly by any instruments, chords do appear at the end.But the musicians here all play together, like one ugly monolith force coming toward you, like a demonstration or rally. This is politics as a one-dimensional etude.Politics is much more a complex affair than this. The Ear Unit here take things quite seriously however, with ugly cello sounds, and electric menacing keyboard, but you really don't need to. This was one of the first works Andriessen wrote for the group he founded, De Volharding in Amsterdam. The California people here have played all over the world and are well versed in jumping aesthetics between musical languages from Carter to Torke, yet keeping magnificently a focus. They make a good synergistic match with Andriessen creativity.
