Mesmerizing.......2002-08-31

Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) was a remarkable man and remarkable composer. These keyboard works are riveting in their simple beauty and the meaningful ornamentation. By the latter phrase I mean, they are not "baroque" in the popular sense of word; rather, they are deep and sprititual pieces. The late John Toll performs these pieces beautifully, with deep appreciation and skill. Some might ask if Gibbons is similar to Scarlatti. I would say not...more reflective perhaps, like Thomas Tallis. Whatever....this is a performace to cherish.

Why, then, 4 stars and not 5? It has nothing to do with John Toll, who deserves a 5. The demerit is the fault of the label, Linn. Those who know Linn think of state-of-the-art audio equipment (esp. turntables and speakers). So, what a shock to play this CD and hear audible tape hiss. Before the first track even begins, the hiss is there. Yes, it's hidden during the playing, but is noticeable during quieter sections and between tracks. Given the state of technology, this is unbelievable.

Sophie Yates uses the `light' Italian instrument which makes both this CD and her `Spanish' CD real joy to hear. While I have those renditions which those experts in tight pink pants have determined are `authentic' if this CD is or not I do not know nor do I care. This recording along with the artists `Spanish and Portuguese Harpsichord' are outstanding delights.

Sophie Yates speed of playing is pleasant. This CD can either be played in the background while engaged in something or relaxed too or one can thump their fingers on the table to every note.

Good stuff.
