Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Amazing CDs!.......2006-09-20

I love these two CDs included in this set. I was introduced to this by my father, who loves to listen to this music, too. He let me borrow the first CD for a day, and I kaifed(spelling is wrong, I know.....) it away from him the next week, and it has a permanent home in my room. It is one(Oh, all right, two,) of the best CDs I have ever listened to, making it in my top three with a Manhattan Transfer CD and a Maynard Ferguson CD.

One album I'll probably listen to forever.......2003-02-09

I believe I've played this CD, on average, once each week since I first came upon it in Spring, 1999. Atypically, each piece on the album is thoroughly enjoyable, and every one seems better than the one before it. Well represented are works by David Lantz and Paul Speer, and by David Arkenstone. Usually I skip around when playing a CD; this is my one and only exception. And everyone asks for repeats of "Behind the Waterfall".

One of my most-played cd's.......2002-09-17

CD #1 in this double album has three or four pieces that I really enjoy--Tingstad & Rumbel's due, Friedmann's mysterious mermaid composition and of course the wonderful "Cristofori's Dream", which was a big hit CD on its own. I ended up getting the individual albums for Tingstad & Rumbel, because I enjoyed their particular sound so much.

At first, I didn't like CD #2 as well as CD #1, but now I listen to this almost as frequently. There are some Celtic-inspired pieces in particular that are very pleasant.

The great thing about these samplers for me is that I can find artists I am not familiar with, and also there is so much variety that I can play it over and over without getting bored.

Good intro to Narada.......2000-11-29

I do not personally own this CD but I did check it out a couple of times from the Houston Public Library (Central Library) which does own a copy. Generally very good, relaxing music. Narada's Celtic music selections in particular I have found to be NOT as good as Celtic collections by other labels...can't say why, exactly,though. Still, one thing that Narada artists excell at is acoustic guitar pieces (especially ¡Nuevo Flaminco! stuff). Unlike the other reviewer, I am generally fond of New Age electronic pieces, it's just that I've heard better elsewhere, particularly, as I said, in regards to New Age Celtic tunes.

Two discs, chock full of the best stuff. These are long-running discs, no short-changing here. There are only two pieces I sometimes want to skip over, and they suffer only by comparison with the best collection I have seen.

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.

It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

just a warning..........2005-10-14

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

Never ever to find more graceful play!.......2007-03-09

The incredible representation and sound Parkening created by the guitar is
sublimity itself. Though I have listened to many a world-famous guitarist,
I have never been so fascinated as by his play. I couldn't but make intimate friends of mine a present of Parkening's CDs like "In the Spanish Style", through which I felt I could show them what real music is like. I never ever imagine I could find more graceful play than that of Christopher Parkening at least in the world of the guitar.

Grunting and moaning explained.......2006-01-03

I met Parkening in 1972, a few years after this album was first released. I asked him about the "groans" that could be heard. He explained that at the time he let his thoughts wander and thought about the future, when some Swiss moron named Peter Gilman would complain about the recording. Absentmindedly, he groaned at the thought of it all. He told me if ever I should meet Peter that I was to apologize.

Great Introduction to Classical Guitar.......2005-04-07

My parents had this on vinyl when I was kid. I listened to it a lot in high school when I was listening to a lot of musical styles. This and Parkening's Bach CD are probably my two favorite classical guitar discs.

As a rock/blues/pop guitarist, I've been learning some classical over the last few years. And this disc has been my reference. Parkening's playing is confident and enjoyable. Capricho Arabe stands out as does the Sor studies that he covers.

My only complaint is Leyenda, his performance is less than passionate and the recording doesn't sound EQ'd correctly in a few spots. Other artists have better recordings of this song (John Williams comes to mind).

If you are looking for a great classical guitar CD, this is a great place to start.

Excellent collection.......2004-05-06

This is the album that made me want to take up classical guitar. Great selection of songs, played with incredible feeling and tone. Brilliant performances of Capricho Arabe, Recuerdos and the Villa-Lobos and Ponce Preludes. His rendition of Romance is what every student should strive for. The student (Parkening) has most definitely learned all of his master's (Segovia) lessons and went even further. Still fresh after 25 years of regular listening.

Parkening in top form.......2004-02-28

Christopher Parkening's technical prowess is in full effect here, showing he's truly the ultimate successor to the great Andres Segovia.

I don't know about grunting, but if you listen closely, there is some noticeable sighing from Parkening on a few of the tracks, especially the third. Presumably, he was getting weary from all the work his fingers were getting in playing those immensely complex arrangements. But to go as for as to say it ruins the recording is ludicrous. In fact, the sighing adds to the intimacy and accessibility of the recording. I had always felt distant while listening to a Parkening album because he sounded TOO polished. He plays great here, but to hear his voice, even in its slightest audible sound, adds to the album's charm.

Leon Kirchner is one of the last of that stalwart breed who first came to prominence in the late 1940 s and early 1950s. A pupil of Bloch, Schoenberg and Sessions at the University of California, Berkeley, Kirchner s music definitely shows affinities with Schoenberg in outlook and temperament. No less than Schoenberg, Kirchner is both an ardent modernist and a volatile Romantic, a composer whose sophisticated awareness of the past informs a restless search for authenticity. A classic example would be his Piano Concerto No. 1, first recorded over 50 years ago by the composer himself with Dmitri Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic. Like much of the music on this disc, there is edginess and a tough demeanor, but there is real music present, in the traditional sense. This significant new release reissues classic performances by Leon Fleisher and Peter Serkin as well as presenting important recent pieces such as the Sonata No. 2 and The Forbidden.

Six Pianists Celebrate the Music of Leon Kirchner.......2007-06-12

Leon Kirchner was born in 1919. He was a student of Schoenberg. He has written atonally for many years and yet his music has always had the same sort of Romantic impulses as those of his mentor; that is to say, if one didn't know Kirchner's music rarely had tonal centers, one might think this was simply hyperchromatic yet tonal music. Kirchner has also been an esteemed, even revered, teacher at Harvard where he taught, among others, John Adams. This CD is a collection of performances of six of his quintessential piano works played by six distinguished American pianists -- Leon Fleisher, Peter Serkin, Jonathan Biss, Jeremy Denk, Max Levinson and Joel Fan -- and in at least three instances -- those of Serkin, Fan and Biss -- the pianist is the dedicatee of the piece he plays.

The earliest piece is the First Piano Sonata (1948) played by Leon Fleisher. I'm not sure when it was recorded but it appeared initially on a Fleisher album also containing music of Copland, Sessions and Rorem. Whatever its recording date, the sound is fine and the performance even better. This is passionate and engaged music. Peter Serkin included 'Interlude I' (1989) on his sensational album '... in real time' which contained thirteen pieces written for him by seven eminent composers, including Kirchner. It, too, is a passionate and dense work and was followed some thirteen years later (2002) by 'Interlude II', written for Jonathan Biss, the stunningly talented Philadelphia pianist. The second Interlude is a polar opposite of its predecessor in that it is transparent, flowing and with islands of Zenlike serenity. (Interestingly, the piece started out to be for left hand alone, for Leon Fleisher, but the nature of the music apparently led Kirchner to change his plans for it.)

The 'Five Pieces for Piano' (1987) each have titles taken from Dickinson poems and indeed they started out as songs set to her words. When a couple of pianists wondered if Kirchner couldn't set them for piano alone, he did so, incorporating the sung line into the songs' piano accompaniments. They are played magnificently by Levinson. In a brilliant stroke, the Albany booklet includes the texts of Dickinson's poems: The Auctioneer; He scanned it -- staggered --; The Crickets; Much Madness is divinest Sense--; and There came a Wind.

'The Forbidden' (2006) was written for Joel Fan. The latest piece here, written when Kirchner was 87, it is supple, long-limbed, flowing. Sonata No. 2 (2002) is a single thirteen-minute movement, a bracing dry martini of a piece, played with delicacy and grace by Jeremy Denk.

These are, of course, definitive performances of these works, and if you are an admirer of Kirchner's, you'll want this compilation.

I heard this at a local mega-bookstore. It is pleasing enough that I actually heard it and was listening to it. Definitely background or relaxation music, but also good enough to listen to. The woodwinds on some of the pieces are very lyrical. Good medieval/Elizabethan type music.

There are 6 tracks that save the cd's from being drink coasters:"Lover's promise","My sky at twilight","Ferry","Breeze from Saintes Maries","Simpatico" and "Fingerdance".The rest of the works are bland and bear no repeated listening.One cd would have been more than sufficient considering the lack of great material.Prepare to do a lot of skipping around on these disks. P.S. Get this set only if you happen across it used.

A lot of strings...but not so much music.......1998-11-02

For me it was a surprise that a label as Narada couldn't issue a better guitar sampler than this, considering all the good material that they have. Probably, they privilege a "Good Seller Sampler", as a "young person guide to Narada Guitarists", than a sampler for their fans. Sorry about that, but for me the only tracks that worth it are "Ferry" (Randy Ross), "November Winds" (Friedemann) and "Finger dance" (B. Mclaughlin). E.R.
