Album Description
The works on this disk all reflect, in one way or another, legacies both personal and public: legacies of social action, of friendship and of the formation–for better or worse–of a musical point of view.

Legacy

The piece titled Legacy was commissioned for the Cassatt Quartet by Planned Parenthood Center of Syracuse to celebrate the dedication of their new facility, completed in 1996. The first movement, “Love-Chorus,” was commissioned later, in 1999, by the Summit Institute for the Corigliano Quartet.

Legacy is intended both as an occasional work and as a rumination on the progress of women’s rights in our society; the “legacy” of the title is that of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Margaret Sanger, and countless others who have fought to raise our collective consciousness. What interests me about these women is that they shared no common ideology, no easy agenda. They were each simply committed to the realization of basic equality for women in a wide variety of contexts.

“Love-Chorus” celebrates a kind of collective spirit of renewal through Hendrix-like explosions of sound; it prepares the second movement, “Legacy,” which is carried along on a wave of propulsive rhythmic and harmonic motion. The voices are at times in unison, at other times in canon—sometimes working together, sometimes not. They press ahead, however, with tremendous urgency. As the struggle for reproductive freedoms has been through dark times in recent years, so too the music descends into the abyss and cries out de profundis. The inevitable motion of the opening, however, sweeps these lamentations away; this legacy lives in an eternally renewed, and renewable, present. The work is dedicated, with love and gratitude, to the Cassatt and Corigliano Quartets.

Symphony No. 2
In the fall of 1995 I received a commission from the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra of Zlin, Czech Republic, for a new orchestral work to be premiered in its upcoming season. I had been to Zlin once before for the recording of an earlier piece of mine called The Train and was excited at the prospect of working with the orchestra again. (Aside from their devotion to new orchestral music from literally around the world, they gave the Czech premiere of Karel Husa’s Music for Prague, 1968, at the 1990 Prague Spring. Who could possibly turn down the opportunity to make music with a group such as this?)

I had had a symphony in mind for some time and decided that this was the chance I needed to see it through. While the piece had been taking shape in my unconscious from the fall of 1995 into the early part of 1996, its expressive core was formed in February of 1996 with the unthinkable and wrenching loss to cancer of Cassatt Quartet founding cellist Anna Cholakian. In this moment the symphony became for me a meeting ground between the mythic cast of this most public of genres and the very private, personal shadow of my own grief. The piece that resulted is, I think, imperfect, but captures with some clarity the difficult journey of that year.

Quite unexpectedly, and for the first time in my life as a composer, the piece began to draw from everything around it. Thus the first movement takes up and refines elements from my first symphony (a work thankfully not included on this recording), while the third echoes an old Armenian song beloved of Anna and her father, “Hokis Murmur (My Soul is Sad),” the Dresden Amen (associated in my mind more with the Reformation symphony of Mendelssohn than with Parsifal), my own second string quartet, and a setting of John Donne’s holy sonnet “From the Round Earth’s Imagined Corners . . .” that I had composed earlier the same year. It is, perhaps, the multiplicity of these sources that accounts for the third movement’s strange tone and precarious sense of balance, and yet for me the whole thing has a weird integrity; this is actually some of my favorite of my own music.

In a distinct break from their muscular triumph Gladiator, Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott teamed up again to bring Peter Mayle's sunny Provençal romance to the screen, a change of milieu that's spawned an equally warm, often sentimentally tinged soundtrack and score. Using a trio of pop songs by the great Harry Nilsson (including the joyous demo of Nilsson Schmilsson's "Gotta Get Up") as an axis that's as effusive as it is unlikely, this is a collection that romps through Franco-pop nuggets variously contemporary (Makali's elegant "Il Faut du Temps..."), vintage (Charles Trenet's "Je Chante," Jean Sablon's "J'Attendrai," Tino Rossi's "Le Chant du Guardian"), and downright loopy (Richard Anthony's French redux of "Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini"), making room for Patti Page, Josephine Baker, and Delaney & Bonnie along its merry way. Also included are three cues from newcomer Marc Streitenfeld's underscore, a nimble exercise in instrumental post-modernism whose electronica/folk/neoclassical mélange is as eclectic as the song choices, yet characterized by subtlety and grace. --Jerry McCulley

Five albums into Son Volt's career--and a pair into the band's rebirth following leader Jay Farrar's several solo ventures--it's time to bury the encumbering "alt-country" moniker that has dogged Farrar since his days in the genre-setting Uncle Tupelo. While the inexhaustible songwriter relied on guitars to drive 2005's rock-heavy Okemah and the Melody of Riot, Son Volt amends its familiar arrangements on The Search, balancing the instrumentation with piano, organ, and dabbles in a horn section. "Feels like drivin' 'round in a slow hearse," Farrar pleads over repetitive piano and East Indian guitar loops in "Slow Hearse." It's a pensive opener that suggests something is askew, but the horns that kick off "The Picture" literally scream it from the Stax vaults. Farrar dives in and out of genres, tingling the ivories to add subtle alterations to both the gorgeous "Underground Dream" and Imagine-like "Adrenaline and Heresy," turning his band into Gang of Four for the 134-second rocker "Satellite" and singing alongside Shannon McNally on the soulful "Highways and Cigarettes." While it may be impossible for this Son Volt to ever reach the pinnacle of their 1995 debut, no one can accuse Jay Farrar of going through the motions. --Scott Holter

Virginia cool meets Kentucky thunder in a collaboration between genre-bending pianist Bruce Hornsby and multi-instrumental virtuoso Ricky Skaggs that expands the terrain of bluegrass. Highlights include a meditative, minor-key transformation of Hornsby's "Mandolin Rain" (with Skaggs on the title instrument) and a downhome revival of "A Night on the Town," though newer originals such as "The Dreaded Spoon" seem slight in comparison. The traditional "Across the Rocky Mountain" and original instrumental "Stubb" shift the spotlight to Skaggs, though Hornsby's sophisticated chord progressions fit fine within the backing of Skaggs's Kentucky Thunder band. Guests include Jerry Douglas and Stuart Duncan, with John Anderson contributing vocals to a wild-card rendition of Rick James's "Super Freak," which provides the closing bluegrass hoedown. --Don McLeese

Legacy is the right title for this album. Boyz II Men were the original, modern-day boy band, predating both 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys. Heavily influenced by doo-wop groups such as the Platters and the Dells and developed by ex-New Edition member Michael Bivins, Boyz II Men quickly rose to heavyweight status after the foursome's 1991 debut, Cooleyhighharmony, their success based on romantic ballads and strong vocals. However, they lacked the charisma and looks to really make an impact on the world, and they're perhaps the only group that could be described as "quietly" selling 35 million records. This collection of their best moments concentrates on their strengths as crooning Cupids, exemplified by their massive hit and classic ballad "End of the Road" (taken from the Boomerang soundtrack). "Hey Lover," featuring LL Cool J, is as energetic as the album gets. Legacy is unabashedly assembled for lovers of slow, romantic bedroom soul. --Jake Barnes

Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulley
