Well ...

If you're reading this, it's likely that you have already have already heard about Dennis Brain and in particular the famous passages where his rapid playing left a generation of listeners shaking their heads in astonishment.

This is how everyone first hears of him: a sort of circus act with lots of notes but without the great tone that distinguishes really good horn playing. This first impression is strengthened by stories about the strange, narrow-bore horn he played and by the sound of occasionally clipped staccato notes and a tight low range. As someone once said, "My faults, according to this calculation, are heavy indeed!"

But in Brain's case as well as in Fitzwilliam Darcy's, closer acquaintance reverses the impression altogether.

At odds with the idea of frenetic speed, Brain produces some of the most sensitive phrase shaping you'll find in any musical recordings. His effortless mastery gives many passages a relaxed feeling that suggests he is playing them a third lower than written. His recordings of hornists' two signature pieces -- Strauss's first horn concerto and Mozart's third -- are both gentler than any other recording in the catalogue. He plays the Mozart third at a surprisingly slow tempo and turns the first page of the Strauss, which most players muscle up on, into a lullaby.

In the middle and upper ranges, Brain's tone, while unobtrusive, is so full and pure that many people say they have a tendency to block out everything else and just listen to that sound. That may not seem an asset for ensemble playing, but his accompaniment playing was wonderful and his reliability a huge asset for his colleagues. The expectation of perfection became so other-worldly that, on the inevitable day when Brain finally flubbed a passage in rehearsal, the always mischievous Sir Thomas Beecham stopped the orchestra, put his baton down, and just said, "Thank God."

Brain's trills, lip trills in particular, are uniquely clear, and at the end of the day, yes, there is that fabulously rapid articulation that leaves listeners wondering whether they were dreaming what they just heard.

This playing all emanated from a personality that was apparently of the utmost simplicity and modesty. Alan Civil had the last word on this forty years ago in his remembrance of Brain on the jacket of "The Art of Dennis Brain" album (Seraphim 60040, if you can find it). Try also [...] Brain's early, accidental death strikes one the same way as Beethoven's deafness does: a hint that higher forces are at play.

No, this is not a review of Brain's Mozart. It is an invitation to begin an acquaintance. Dig in!

By far the best rendition of the Mozart Horn Concertos ever produced. David Brain must be the "El Supremo" of horn playing. An added bonus on this CD is the Quintet in E flat for piano and wind and with Colin Horsley as the pianist is an added treat for New Zealanders. A "MUST HAVE" for all lovers of Mozart.

I purchased The LP in 1953 and proceeded to 'wear it out.' No, I have not yet thrown it out.

However, I have had the good fortune to find myself a resident of the San Francisco Peninsula since 1970 and, in time, have had the privilege to make the acquaintance of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, who perform one of each of their annual subscription concert series locally here in Palo Alto.

In 1992 they recorded the Horn Concertos with Lowell Greer performing them on the natural (valveless) horn, the instrument which was in use at the time Mozart composed them. Given the temperamental nature of the the instrument, the recording is doubtless a composite of many 'takes.' It is also a breathtaking performance and is now my 'standard.' See:

5 out of 5 stars A Master Performs a Master.......2005-08-20

I'm not much of a classical music reviewer. I've been exposed to a lot of music, but I tend to stick to favorite performances, so I don't have the depth needed to really be authoritative. Except perhaps for oboe, and that's because I grew up listening to John De Lancie and Marcel Tabuteau - and once you hear really good, you know what's what. This album is a similar case. Dennis Brain wasn't a 'good' French horn player, he was probably the best that there ever was or will be.

I've heard a lot of performance horn players. All you have to do to see what I mean is to wander through this website and pick off performances of the first movement of Horn Concerto No. 2 in E flat and you will discover that Brain never blurbles a note, and every attack in the Allegro Maestoso is pinpoint. He is technically and tonally perfect and couples that with a superb musical sensibility. It was one of the great musical tragedies that he died at the age of 36.

Something to keep in mind is that when Mozart wrote these works for his good friend (and cheesemonger) Joseph Leutgeb, the French horn was a very limited instrument. Many of the notes were reached by stopping the bell to some degree, which affected volume and intonation. Mozart wrote to take advantage of Leutgeb's expertise at this, and Dennis Brain chooses to maintain this effect rather than just play his modern instrument with no thought to the past.

These compositions cover a fair range of time. Number 2(K.417) is really the earliest (1783). And the incomplete No. 1 (K.412) is really the last (1791). The best though, in both my mind and Mozart's is the Quintet in E flat for piano & wind. Mozart was a master in using instrument groupings in novel and powerful fashion and this is no exception.

EMI has remastered this CD over their previous release, which enhances clarity, and makes it easier to hear Dennis Brain's considerable finesse. I own their first release and the difference in clarity makes it worth finding this edition. But even the duller production of the 1997 is enjoyable. It you want a good selection of Dennis Brain's work on one CD this is an excellent buy.

5 out of 5 stars Mozart: Horn Concert.......2005-08-14

Great recordings of the century, and that is what it is.
Herbart von Karajan conducting, and Dennis Brain on horn tells it all; a wonderful rich music experience are waiting for you.
In my ears its probably one of the best recordings ever made of the horn concert. And even though its from the mid 50`s it comes in a wonderful remastered CD.
The CD comes with a very good booklet in English; telling the story behind the record.
I highly recommend this album

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06

The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.

As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.

However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.

But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.

My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.

Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto is much more popular, and more frequently played, than his Second. When you listen to this disc, you'll find out why. The First is an inspired piece with memorable themes, enjoyable but not ostentatious display for the piano, and a great sense of fun. The Second has unmemorable themes and a similar style without conveying the sense of fun. For that matter, I've never thought much of the Capriccio brillant, a rather empty showpiece. For those who like lesser Mendelssohn better than I do, this disc is very well played throughout, although the piano takes Howard Shelley's attention away from conducting and the orchestral playing isn't as distinctive as the piano playing. --Leslie Gerber

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Recording.......2003-03-03

This stunner is worth the Penguin Rosette and recommendation from Gramophone magazine. The playing is stunning. The orchestra is in finest form. And the digital recording is fabulous - crystal clear, well balanced. No muddy piano parts. The notes are clearly heard and played at a thrilling pace. Very very highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Pianist.......2000-12-26

Listening to Howard Shelley and Felix Mendelssons Piano Concerto Nr 1 brought back great memories when I was a youth. The sad yearning especially Molto Allegro Con Fuoco is particularly hauntingly beautiful. Give it a try get the kids to bed put your feet up get a bottle of good beer say a McEwans and a glass of good sherry and listen to Howard direct and Play this hauntingly beautiful concerto. It remind me somewhat of some of Mozart's earlier Piano Concerto's .

      4 out of 5 stars 25 Classical Heartbreakers.......2006-11-29

Although these are popular and widely heard compositions (that's why I gave it 4 stars) they are very soothing when you want to mellow out. However, I can't understand why the title reads '20 Classical Heartbreakers' when there are 25 pieces.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-05-20

One who doesn't have this CD, could be well informed about the CD from Peter Branscombe's review, though, I would like to add my personal impression, hopping that it will help potential buyer to buy this precious music.

Let's go to the subject, now. I'd change that CD opens with Concerto No.3. It is so explosive in the "Allegro", beginning with underlined accord ("tam, tam, tam")- forte, which makes so big importance to the thematic material that follows. Then, it elaborates contrasting two themes, in Mozart's original manner being not less brilliant than any latter works. Then, the "Andante" bright, with a good, constant tempo and almost no development (a measure or two), just to let people take the breath before the final movement. The "Presto" is music of C.P.E Bach but elevated to the Mozart's genius. The orchestral introduction, which starts with a furious, upward passage, built in crescendo to the climax, makes the energized ambience before the cembalo takes up, playing the same role. It is fast and furious till the very end. Violins, lead by Andrew Manze are vivid and meticulously articulated, plus punctual timpani and trumpets, it all makes the theatrical ambience throughout. But, the most amazing are horns. They are so greatly amuseing that I got the impression that they really enjoyed their orchestral score made it to be their own solos- What a charming orchestra!

The rest of the CD is pure Mozart, concertos not less worth than any other of his works. I really enjoy listening to this music.

Oh!-I almost missed to mention the "Andante Staccato" of the Concerto No.2. In a way, it is a "Holly Relic", an endless music, latter seen in a "Andante" of Clavier-Concerto No.22 that I could indulge for hours repeating it again and again.
I also honor cembalo, oboes and flutes for this remakrable music.
      Mirro

5 out of 5 stars Lively performances of rarely heard works.......2001-04-17

Commonly called the "pasticcio concertos", these works date from 1767 and mostly consist of reworkings, arrangements, expansions, etc. of sonata movements by other composers (whose names will probably sound unfamiliar to most readers: Raupach, Honauer, Shobert, and even C. P. E. Bach), and their importance in Mozart's output, especially given the genius of his maturity concertos, is usually considered to be minimal; their overall atmosphere is a rather "style galant" one, and, as one might expect, quite a far call from the late Mozart. In spite of that, and in spite of Mozart being helped by his father Leopold in the arrangements, these concertos already show some of the young composer's qualities, especially in the sonata form developments (e. g. the minor modulations and some tone nuances which are absent in, let's say, C. P. E. Bach's concertos). Besides, they show an interesting chapter of the creation of the piano concerto as we know it (from its late Mozart and Beethoven archetypes). The (historically informed) performance by Robert Levin is outstandingly accurate and quite rightly centered on improvisation (the cadenzas are improvised, as are the embellishments); following documents about performances Mozart gave of these concertos, he plays on a harpsichord (Bavington modeled after a Goermans-Taskin) whose excellent sound can only be commended. As on most period performances, the harpsichord also gives a quasi-continuo role during the orchestral tuttis. As for the orchestra itself, Hogwood conducts his AAM with elegance, a great sense of colour, and most of all, a certain liveliness which (along with the soloist's talent) is probably the main element in this performance's success. (On a side note, I'd like to spend a few words to confute the anonymous reviewer from Austria: I do not agree with his views of Mozart as a piano composer, but that is a matter of personal taste, I guess; much more importantly, I dare praying the kind reader to consider the inconsistencies contained in his review, for as harpsichord keys are generally black, the term ivory is quite inappropriate to describe them. The very instrument he knows as piano is commonly called a harpsichord, clavecin, gravicembolo, etc.).

2 out of 5 stars Wonderful attempt... accenting on the word attempt.......2001-04-10

Mozart, an absolutely wonderful musician, tries his best to apply his past genius from works like "The Magic Flute" or even the incredibly popular piece, "Ave Verum Corpus" to the beautiful instrument most refer to as the piano. His "best try" falls short of all expectations as he slides in and out of outrageous themes, incomprehensible modulations, and terribly futile cadences. Perhaps he should spend more of this time learning to play this beautiful instrument than writing pointless music intended to damage such beautiful ivories.

        Amazon.com essential recording

These are glorious performances of three very different piano concerti by Mozart. No. 19 (K. 459) is a handsome showpiece, filled with dramatic turns for the soloist; No. 10 (K. 365) for two pianos is simply lovely; and No. 20 (K. 466) is a deeply felt, intricately woven, brooding, but finally exultant masterpiece. Martha Argerich tears into No. 20's darkness with great fury, abetted by Rabinovitch's tense, turmoil-filled accompaniment; she plays Beethoven's appropriately heavy cadenzas with brilliance, and her headlong blaze into the final movement is breathtaking. Rabinovitch plays and leads No. 19 with charm and virtuosity. And the two pianists zip through K. 365 as if it were a delicious ice-cream sundae, which, frankly, it is. A terrific disc, highly recommended. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars Splendid No. 20.......2005-12-23

Argerich offers a refreshing take on Mozart's D Minor Concerto, one of the composer's most famous among his 27 in this genre. Her articulation is incisive, and the unfolding of the drama free of sentimentality. For those who cannot associate Argerich with Mozart, I would just say that you owe it to yourself to give this CD a try. Some "canon" interpreters can go to the extreme in sculpting the beauty of Mozart so pure and ethereal as to rob away the wider range of emotions embodied in his music; this D Minor Concerto is a good example.

Robinovitch's F Major No. 19 pales in comparison. The first of the two cadenzas in the last movement is truly strange--very uncharacteristic of Mozart--not sure if it was composed by Robinovitch himself. The CD redeems itself with a fine performance of the Concerto for Two Pianos.

        3 out of 5 stars Who's Who?.......2000-04-24

Goh Aik Guan's review of this CD is unfortunate as the F major concerto is not played by Argerich - it's Rabinovitch who plays this one, and it's not to my taste either.

5 out of 5 stars A new way with Mozart.......2000-01-21

This disc is most important in the Mozart catalog, despite the dismissive comments from some poorly-informed listeners here. In an age where genteel Mozart dominates, these bold, masculine recordings are a new way of looking at old relics, and quite frankly probably closer to the way Wolfie intended. Over the centuries Mozart has become the man-child in most interpretors' hands (see the chapter "The Myth of the Eternal Child" in Solomon's biography, _Mozart, A Life_) and this recording makes one finally able to imagine the Mozart who had stubble, who was a man and not a boy. The comment that Argerich can scarcely be expected to negotiate this music after her bold "recent" Rachmaninoff 3rd recording should just be ignored: the Rach 3 disc is not recent but from 1983, and she no longer plays the Rach in her repertoire, and it was clearly far from her mind when she made these recordings. (Her style in the two discs bear no more than a superficial relation.) But she does attack all music with force and conviction, and is not for the faint-hearted. She challenges conventions...I thought this is what artists (like Mozart himself) were supposed to do.

        4 out of 5 stars Classic Argerich.......1999-12-16

When one listens to Argerich, one must expect the extraordinary. Not for her is the run of the mill performance which conventional wisdom associates with the "correct" style. She is here to offer gems of ideas of how a composer's work can be intepreted. Her rendition of the D minor Concerto is classic Argerich. Her tone colour (eg.with brlliant use of the una corda), "fantasique" use of rubato and how she makes the music soar make one realise how exciting Mozart music can be. I would rank her D minor rendition with Clara Haskil's (listen to how she ends her cadenza in the 1st movt; the almost unbearable tension and well-gradated crescendo; ditto for Haskil). Different in their own ways, but similar in how they each imprint their individualism in the work. My only problem was with the 1st movt of the F maj. The approach is affected, and I cannot quite understand some of the things she does (eg. tempo rubato at some points) which seem to be idiosyncracies. Her approach seems to be too robust for something so dainty. I would go for Alicia De Larocha's 1st movt for her transparency and simplicity. But Argerich's 2nd movt and 3rd are classic, esp her statement of the 1st subject of the 3rd movt after the first "small" cadenza: the deliberateness in which she reiterates the theme after that, seems almost as if she has not got over her musing in the cadenza. Strongly recommended for students and music lover who want something that goes beyond the jaded renditions of Mozart, and of course for Argerich fans, which I count myself as one.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not all that needed.......1999-07-10

With a market already overladen with Mozart Piano Concerti, any new arrival had best offer something extraordinarily novel. After her fairly recent smash-bang performance of Rachmaninoff's Third, Martha Argerich would hardly be expected to negotiate the delicate balances demanded by Mozart. Her latest Teldec offering of Mozart's (4509 98407-2) with co-pianist Alexandre Rabinovich and the Wurtembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn under Jorg Faerber gives us some splendid playing here, some interesting sounds there, but I cannot see this replacing some of the older recordings of these same pieces. On the other hand, if one does not already have these pieces in the collection, then by all means give this one a chance. I think you will especially like the No. 10 in E flat for two pianos and orchestra.

There may be better recordings/performances of the Mozart concerti, but this might be the only CD I've come across that features the Saint-Saens transcription of the Andante from Mozart's K.467 Piano Concerto for violin and orchestra. Absolutely beautiful and astounding! I can't believe Mozart didn't think of that idea! This is a very good reason to own this CD!
The concerti are great too, btw!
