Friedrich really fires things up on this CD! He plays some unbelievable things on this disc, which has The Honnegger Intrada, Hindemith Sonate, Stravinsky Fanfare for a New Theatre, and other really hard tunes. He really gets it out front on every track!

Tucked in a collection of music by European composers finally a major classical record label CHANDOS releases music by Komitas and in what fashion! You can argue how accurately the title of the album "Dances from the Heart of Europe" applies to this music nevertheless Komitas's Armenian folk dances/songs arranged for chamber orchestra and recorded here will be a delight to the listeners familiar to the music and will become an instant love affair to those not so familiar with them. You will cherish this one-of-a- kind album for years to come.

      To put it simply, this CD is yet another proof that the music of this charismatic composer is simply stunning. In the beginning I was quite reluctant to listen to the atonal works of the composer so I had just focused on the tonal ones. After listening repeatedly to his Piano Concerto n.1 I was convinced that there is something special in his music. This CD is a splendid proof that atonal music - as perceived and developed by Skalkottas - can be as breathtaking and warm as tonal music.
      I started listening to the most accessible works of this Cd (concertino for trumpet, tango & fox-trot) then went on to the mesmerizing sonata concertante for bassoon and piano , and finally to the quartet and the charming concerto for two violins.
      All in all, fantastic Cd. Skalkottas' unique way of expressing his thoughts will leave you wanting to explore his music even more. If in the beginning you can't understand the "direction" of each work, don't get discouraged. Repeated listening will more than reward you!

        Album Description

        The immensely prolific Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas (1909-1949) was the favorite student of Arnold Schoenberg, who considered him his most gifted student after Berg and Webern. Here is a rare opportunity to hear the music of this master who was quite totally ignored and/or rejected (like our own Charles Ives) in his own lifetime. He composed more than 200 sometimes very extended works (of Mahlerian proportions), the vast majority of which are only now being recorded and becoming available on CD.

        The Thirty-Two Piano Pieces of Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas (1904-1949) are brave, eccentric, unique and gritty works of metaphysical profundity. Cast in his own very personal musical idiom, Skalkottas' compositions bend the parameters of harmony and discord as well as the parameters of emotional expression. With a dash of Bartok, a pinch of Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Debussy, a smidgen of Scriabin, Bach and Beethoven, and more than a speck of Satie (on steroids), the mix becomes one of exceptional fascination. This Skalkottas "brew" is potent stuff gloriously rich in atonal pungency, complex chordal arrays and mesmerizing lyrical sequences--- ruminations laced with unsettling exclamatory outbursts juxtaposed by periods of unnerving quietude. Yet, simultaneously, the composer will broadside us with a jazz riff inordinately and gleefully perverse; or, a lyrical episode of portentous mysticality. Savored thoughtfully over many days, rather than drained in one sitting, this challenging, thought-provoking music, given time, intoxicates and bewitches.

        Israeli-born pianist Idith Meshulam, a talent to reckon with, plays with energetic moxie and aplomb, her technique truly phenomenal. And, yet, her subtle coloring of the introspective passages is no less awe-inspiring. It is no mean feat to keep the Thirty-Two Piano Pieces vital and individual, each etched empathetically. Few pianists would, or could. It is obvious to me that Ms. Meshulam has recorded here a devotional "testament" to a composer she clearly regards with the deepest respect, understanding and love. Every note she plays rings true; every ingredient in the mix pure.

        It stands to reason that such a performance should have the most extraordinary sound, and so it does. Engineer Joel Gordon has captured, bar none, the finest piano image I have ever heard. Each register is defined, the instrument up front, full and without intrusive ambience. It is mouth-dropping realism that allows composer, performer and music to meld.

            This Cincinnati Wind Symphony disc, recorded when Eugene Corporon was on the CCM faculty several years ago, contains several recent works worth hearing. Opening with IUP professor Jack Stamp's abrasive "Gavorkna Fanfare," (still hair-raising after repeated hearings), the disc heads over to Ivan Tcherepnin's excellent two-part "Statue." Written to celebrate the Statue of Liberty rededication in 1986, the work quotes American and French motives amid its modern harmonic language. Following is British composer Michael Tippett's complex "Mosaic," a work that explores various timbral combinations, some subtle, some not so. Afterward, the disc pairs together two Grainger favorites. First, the familiar "Irish Tune" in a not-so-familiar highly chromatic and contapuntal setting, and then the rousing "Gumsucker's March" of 1942. Afterward, the listener will encounter the 1st and 3rd movements of Michael Weinstein's "Concerto for Wind Ensemble," a difficult but satisfying work. To round out the program, four of Nikos Skalkottas' brilliantly-orchestrated and exciting "Greek Dances" are featured.

            This CD stands out from the other Klavier releases in this series in that it was recorded LIVE - so it does not have the same buttery sound of some of the others. The band works on here, while not totally inaccessible, definitely are more attuned to the tastes of contemporary music enthusiasts, so if you are entrenched in the neo-Romantic camp, maybe you should save this CD for after both semesters of your music lit class.
