Customer Reviews:
The only authentic Werther recorded.......2006-06-08
This is the most authentic recording of Massenet's "Werther". No later singers can match Thill and Vallin in diction, voice, commitment, and feeling, for this masterpiece. The remastering, thanks to the genius of Ward Marston, hardly sounds like a recording from 1931. A real gem which catches the drama behind this moving story.
An INDISPENSABLE lesson in style and expression.......2005-02-10
France's two leading singers of the 1920-1940 era, heard in 1931, in an opera they both owned. As far as I am concerned, they still do. Thill (1897-1984), a fluent vocalist with the ability to sound like a young man in love, simply sounds like Werther: there is no distance between himself and the rôle; his identification with every syllable he is singing is total. This is one of the great classic assumptions of the gramophone.
Ninon Vallin (1886-1961), a more brilliant vocalist per sè, with a better voice and a more subtle style, is a perfect foil for him: a tremendously conflicted Charlotte, profoundly disturbed below the cool exterior: Vallin does not miss a single nuance. And what phrasing, what tone!
Both these artists understand the style and character of this music perfectly, have all the resources, vocal and technical, to do their parts justice, and simply give their all: what more could one ask?
The 1931 sound has been expertly refurbished. All people who pretend to love opera simply have to get used to old recordings of musical greats. It comes with the territory. The music always comes first.
As a filler, NAXOS adds some further Massenet arias superbly sung by Georges Thill: they too are indispensable.
The "Werther" against which all others must be measured.......2004-07-02
Source: Studio recording from the 1930s.
Sound: This set is clearly a relic of the early days of electric recording, but still quite listenable, once one accepts its limitations. Voices are clearly captured, particularly that of Georges Thill, and given emphasis over the rather dimly-caught orchestra.
Documentation: Naxos gives its standard package. There is a brief essay on the opera, accompanied by thumbnail biographies of the principal singers and all-but forgotten conductor. No libretto. There is a fairly useful plot summary tied to the track listings. (For those desperate for the words, a Google search under "Werther libretto" yields a serviceable French-English version.)
"Werther" is very much a tenor's opera. Although there have been a number of recordings since this primordial set, and many fine tenors recorded, none has ever matched Georges Thill in the role of Werther. Thill is said to have been the last, great, classic French tenor. Perhaps he was, but he was a robust one, with none of the preciousness that such a description tends to conjure up. Why, he was still giving concerts of Wagner's music into his sixties! His tone is slightly dry, his diction precise and his control awesome. I say that despite the famously bobbled high note. He could, I assume, have simply re-recorded his aria to correct the error but, I further assume, his self-confidence was so great that he let it go, just as in a live performance. Or it might be that he wanted to get out of the recording studio without delay, for--so the oft-told tale goes--he and soprano, Ninon Vallin, despised one another and had a stormy recording session.
Ninon Vallin is exactly what one imagines when one hears of a traditional French soprano. Hers was a bright, sharply focused voice, not great in size, but of wonderful precision. Her characterization of Charlotte is right on target: a perfectly ordinary bourgeois girl, with a perfectly ordinary bourgeois husband, who has the misfortune to be extravagantly loved by young Werther, a gormless and suicidal Romantic. The role was apparently intended for a mezzo, but it lies easily in the range of a soprano and has been performed successfully by singers in both ranges.
The entire cast is French and steeped in the traditional French approach to opera. So, too, are the orchesta and conductor. That puts this recording in marked contrast to more recent sets, with their polyglot casts and one-size-fits-all international style.
By all means, seek out the better fidelity of more recent recordings, but you are not likely to find a better performance during this lifetime. This is the classic standard for all recordings of "Werther," an excellent but too-rarely performed opera.
Five stars--and well worthy of them!

WHEN THE COMPOSER WAS STILL THERE.......2002-06-12
FRENCH opéra lovers will want this very first recording made in 1935 in their collection, even if several pieces are missing.LOUISE was one of few opéras in the FRENCH répertoire in a time when PUCCINI was the most famous opéra composer. The work was supervised by the composer himself, which makes it historically interesting.Originally as you must know,it was a série of 78's and it won the grand prix du disque that year.It was considered a landmark recording at the time.DEPUIS LE JOUR is among the most recorded FRENCH aria of all time. The melody is of course in the mold of PUCCINI in it's true romantic setting. Those who would like the complete work have at least two recordings that are available;the last one with ILEANA COTRUBAS and PLACIDO DOMINGO(the cd cover is a RENOIR painting);the other one is a live recording made in the forties.

Two for the price of one........2002-10-01
Adding to their reissue series of important historical opera sets, Naxos here provides two Toscas for the price of one. Included is the complete June 1938 "Tosca", recorded in Rome, and also most of an abridged version sung in French and recorded in Paris in 1931.
Fred Gaisberg, the producer of the 1938 recording has written in his autobiography of the many difficulties that beset the project. Permission was grudgingly obtained to use the vast Teatro Reale for the recording venue, but a strict time limit was imposed. Half way through the recording schedule the original Tosca, Iva Pacetti, collapsed. Maria Caniglia was summoned, at Gigli's suggestion, and the chorus, orchestra and remaining soloists began all over again. Trouble with a four-minute section of Act 1 then proved troublesome. Ten "takes" were abandoned, and a further ten the following day were attempted before a satisfactory result was obtained. Then playbacks revealed a mysterious tapping noise, traced after much searching to a tinsmith reparing part of the vast roof. Somehow the project was completed on time, and a booking made to use the same venue for a recording of "Madama Butterfly" the following year.
Listening to this recording for the first time, in this 2002 reissue, I have noted several strengths and several weaknesses. The Cavaradossi, Beniamino Gigli, is the dominant singer. His Cavaradossi is essentially a light-hearted, easy-going character, a healthy and happy artist who is accidentally thrown into events and causes that kill him. Vocally, Gigli supplements his golden voice by his trick of adding aspirates at the beginning of almost every phrase. He is a master of this means of acting with the voice: to convey good humour it might be a chuckle, to convey misery it might be a gulp, and to convey anger it might be a grunt.
The Tosca, Maria Caniglia, in her first complete opera recording, is a less interesting singer. Occasionally, she brings one or two dramatic moments alive in ways superior even to Callas, but she is not a Tosca to endear herself to me, especially not in her "Vissi d'arte".
The Scarpia, Armando Borgioli, sings loudly throughout. A great strength in the project is the conductor Oliviero de Fabritiis, engaged for his first complete opera recording. Rarely have I been so aware of the niceties of the orchestral parts of this magnificent score.
A production fault that should have been rectified occurs at the start of Act 3. A shepherd boy is heard singing, not in the distance as specified, but full blast into the microphone.
The ambiance of the Teatro Reale gives richness and depth to the sound quality, but sometimes the voices catch the microphones unsympathetically. I was aware of this volume overloading in parts of the Act 1 love duet.
While there are several strengths and weaknesses in this Rome production, the Paris recording boasts the inestimable strength of Ninon Vallin. Her cool, cultured and beautifully enunciated singing will quickly dispel any regrets you may have that the language used in this recording is French. Time constraints forced this condensed version to be cut further by the excision of Cavaradossi's two arias in this reissue, a loss that you will not regret when you hear the stilted, unimaginative singing of the tenor who partners Ninon Vallin.

This Pearl issue is one of the few CDs devoted entirely to the great French soprano Ninon Vallin. Listen to the Lalo duet on Track 1 (one of the earliest and best recordings here) and you'll hear a singer who knows perfectly how to maximize her own vocal resources, how to project every subtlety of the French language, and how to cast a spell. Most aspects of her art are well represented here and the transfers are exemplary. I live in hopes of finding a reissue of her recording of Reynaldo Hahn's "La Dernière Valse", a song I heard her sing in a recital many years ago.

Forget it!.......2007-02-06
This is really SLIGHT stuff! Aside from "Depuis le jour," there's not much here. Naxos has done a good job of the sound transfer -- but what can you do when the music is as weak as this. It's no wonder this has gone out of the repertoire all over the world. No opera company today (or record company either) would spend the money to mount a production.
