Best 2-Dimensional Pianist.......2006-03-21

I love this album. Besides the familiar theme song, there are many pieces which we all learn to play as children studying piano. It's great to hear them. A great gift for young people studying piano.

Best cd of its kind. Beautiful piano music........2006-02-25

I did not know what to expect when I ordered this cd. I ordered it primarily for the Lucy & Linus song but was pleasantly surprised with all the other selections of piano music. It is a cd of piano music that one would believe Schroeder would play. Classics from of course Beethovan and many other familiar favorites. I listen to this cd in the car and it is one of my favorite cd's.

Wonderful music to live by. I play this in my car instead of listening to annoying radio chatter. It is a great collection that ends with the Charlie Brown theme that brings back great childhood memories

I had this cassette when I was a little girl...mom garage saled it accidentally and I had been missing it for a long time. Amazon was the only place I was able to find a copy of the CD and I was SOOO happy to see it in my mailbox. Just plain old piano classics...if you enjoy solo piano, this is a great one. Love it!

Very enjoyable CD. Simple and straight forward, a solo piano and selections from a long list of remarkable composers, followed up with the Peanuts tune Linus and Lucy with a jazz trio(piano, bass and drums) If this dosen't motivate a piano player nothing will. 5 stars!

Pieces too lengthy and ambient for a 'best of'........2003-11-17

'Greatest Hits' compilations are purposeful for those who don't want 'the whole piece'.This cd has too many long and ambient versions to be suitable for beginners to Brahms.Alot of his outstanding moments are 'blended in', rather than 'stood out'.So his melodic element is missed on some selections.But there are stand-outs.This Hungarian Dance n.5 is the most extravagent version i've heard.The tempo-changes are clever, and the orchestra packs a gypsy punch.A couple of the chamber works are great (tho u can find similar to those versions on many brahms' best of's).I find the melody of 'lullaby' is a bit lost in how very slowly it's done.Most 'Brahms' Greatest Hits' do focus more heavily on his orchestral pieces.This one also does, so I feel theres too few of his great chamber (trio/4tet/5tet) themes.

An outstanding eclectic collection.......2005-11-25

The challenge in listening to this CD is finding a favorite selection in this excellent compilation. Antonio Bazzini's Scherzo fantastique, Op. 25, the fourth selection on this CD, is an electrifying performance. The Bazzini selection is played flawlessly and is filled with dynamic energy, playfulness, joy, and virtuoso pyrotechnics. There is a wide range of selections on this CD, spanning three centuries from the violin repertoire, from Bach's Violin Partitas to Anton Karas' "The Harry Lime Theme." The latter is not only beautiful but a lot of fun to listen to, with a melody, rhythm, and style of performance that reminded me more of the jazz violinist Stephane Grapelli than of classical violinists.

Two composers, Bach and Kreisler, are represented by two different selections, with a different violinist playing each one. Kreisler's Liebesleid is performed by Kyung Wha Chung, while on the very next track, Joshua Bell performs Kreisler's Liebesfreud. In the case of Bach, one selection from his Partitas for solo violin is performed magnificently and with great intensity and passion by Nathan Milstein. The other selection is performed by Gidon Kremer, who has a very different style. Even the most ardent admirers of Kremer recognize that his style and interpretations are not necessarily for everybody. In my own case, I prefer to listen to Nathan Milstein, Henryk Szeryng, Arthur Grumiaux, Iona Brown, Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zuckerman, Itzak Perlman, and, amongst the younger violinists, Maxim Vengerov and Joshua Bell.

But my tastes are probably more traditional and there's nothing wrong with giving people the opportunity to hear the individual performance style of Gidon Kremer, an internationally renowned violinist, especially on a CD that is meant to demonstrate the diversity of music and of performance styles that can be played on the violin. In fact, there is no denying Gidon Kremer's excellence in his performance of the Gavotte and Rondo from Bach's Partita No. 3.

The selection from Massenet, the Meditation from Thais, performed by Joshua Bell, it is a piece of sublime musical heaven, as is Arthur Grumiaux's performance of the Spanish Dance No.5 by Granados. As for Henryk Szeryng's performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's The Flight of the Bumble-Bee, it is one of the finest examples I have ever heard on the violin of brilliant virtuoso pyrotechnics. Every selection on this CD is excellent.

From the first selecion, with Shlomo Mintz performing Lalo's Rondo (Allegro) from the Symphonie espagnole, to the very last selection, of Roby Lakatos and His Ensemble playing Vittorio Monti's Czardas, I greatly enjoyed this entire CD. The sound quality on every selection is crystal clear. Very highly recommended.

interesting collection, good price, but definitely not the greatest.......2006-02-17

In Iris Murdoch's The Nice and the Good, one of the characters "was always playing slow movements" on his gramophone. Murdoch gave him the most memorable line from the novel: "Happiness is a matter of one's most ordinary everyday mode of consciousness being busy and lively and unconcerned with self. To be damned is for one's ordinary everyday mode of consciousness to be unremitting agonizing preoccupation with self." (Willy Kost, ch. 22). It's impossible he said this with heavy metal music on the background. Was the thoughtful intermezzo from the Cavalleria Rusticana perhaps playing when he said this?

The slow movements in this compilation are interesting, but I wouldn't call them the greatest of adagios. Offhand, "the greatest" should include the adagio from Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A, the adagio sostenuto from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, the andante from Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 in F, the romance from Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, or even the largo from Bach's Double Violin Concerto in D minor. These compositions are far grander than the clichéd Albinoni's Adagio included in this album (as in every other classical "greats" album). But that's just me.

The strengths of this cd are the beautifully performed intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Elgar's Nimrod variations, and Brahm's Adagio from Violin Concerto in D. The Cavalleria Rusticana, in particular, is elegantly performed, in contrast to the melodrama and haphazard sentimentality which seems to be the tendency among a lot of conductors with this piece.

Out on a limb.......2001-09-04

I sat down to browze the B's and noticed the large number of these collections, all similarly titled; The Greatest of something or other. I must confess I feel sad to think that many people will listen to,for instance, the "adagietto" from Mahlers Fifth symphony entirely out of any context with the overwhelming
music that precedes it. I guess it is okay to not know all of the work but if thats the case why bother with mere extracts?. Really, I'm not playing the snob here but think abbout it, who determines what the greatest is? I look through the titles on these collections and I can think of hundreds of titles that belong under the rubric of "Greatest". There would be a great deal of sense in getting a recording of the Mahler Fifth, or indeed any of his symphonies, listening to it carefully, reading the liner notes if there are any and talking to another music listener about it and do whatever you have to do to get a handle on this music. Believe me, this is tremendous music from start to finish and sadly, there are no shortcuts to understanding it.
What must happen is for the mind to be opened up as an act of will, which is the least you can bring to the table. The composer sweats bullets, the orchestra members devote whole days to mastering one passage, an engineer knocks himself out and for what? For me to listen to a snippet or two while I defrost the freezer? And can I con myself into believing that I am now a big fan of Mahler based on an extract? I don't think so. I know, this sounds like arrant snobbery but it isn't. If anything this urge to taste but not to digest is itself a form of snobbery, it says,"I don't need to know all that other stuff to get something out of a piece of music". I think we do need to know a lot of stuff, most of all because it's fun and it's supremely rewarding too. To own a collection of the greatest music means about a thousand cd's or so, not five or six. I'm closing on two thousand and far from finished. I'm not bragging, but I think collections like this are trivial at best and I say that as an owner of some dating back to lp's. Sometimes I had to buy a whole set in order to get maybe one rarity. That hardly happens anymore. Go out on a limb and get a whole pie rather than one thin slice.

Adagio - Greatest Hits.......2000-05-29

This is a masterful compilation of some the most hauntingly beautiful music put to CD. Bravo!

After listening to the CD it was obvious that some of the recordings were from analog sources. The William Tell Overture was especially hissy. It seems like they could have cleaned up a bit before dubbing to CD.
It's an OK CD for the price.

An excellent selection of music!.......2000-06-05

This was the CD that got me started on classical music. The music is just incredible. It's all solo piano selections so if you like the piano this CD is for you. It starts off with the Hungarian Dances from Brahms (which I remember Bugs Bunny playing in his cartoons now that I hear them again) and just gets better with every song right up to the end. I've now given a copy of this to everyone I know that likes music.

Good 2-disc sampler.......2006-07-08

Many compilations of famous symphonies tend to have 2 - 3 minute samplers of many works; usually by a few authors such as Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, etc... This set instead has whole movements of 16 different symphonies from composers such as those listed above and other such as Bizet, Berlioz and Mahler. The orchestration is quite nice and the sound is very crisp and clear. The pieces themselves sample the emotional range from dramatic to tragic to lively to slow-paced. The picks include famous ones such as the choral movement of Beethoven's 9th to less well known ones such as Bizet's Symphony in C. Altogether, this set makes for good listening and provides about two hours of good music.
