Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Hornist Jeffrey Agrell and pianist Evan Mazunik do something almost no one else does they improvise modern classical music. Since they began collaborating in 2000 (at the University of Iowa, where Agrell is the horn professor), they have delighted audiences with their unique style call it by turns toe-tapping, melodious, thoughtful, touching, humorous, outrageous, amazing. Since they are inventing the territory, they must compose their own material. Each piece has written-out sections, and, like frames for a picture, the composed parts surround opportunities to improvise. Many, if not most, people believe that improvisation = jazz. There are jazz influences, to be sure, but there are many ways to improvise outside of jazz styles. This is one of them, and is one answer to the question: if contemporary classical players improvised, what would it sound like? The improvisation here is not often over set chord progressions as in jazz. . More often the direction of the melody, rhythm, and mood arises from the two performers listening and reacting to what arises in the moment. Decisions about what to play and for how long take place during performance.
In classical music, nothing is left to chance. Here, almost everything is. This music retains the complexity, beauty, and sense of classical music, but adds the pizzazz and unexpected turns of improvisation. In one sense, it is a type of free improvisation, but it always sounds like music, not random chaotic mumblings.
This is sit-up-in-your-seat music, where-did-that-come-from music, whats-going-to-happen-next music. You might call it classical music that has gotten off the page, over the wall, and is having a night on the town. Alternative classical. Classical in denim instead of lace.
This is exhilarating musical exploration, taking you somewhere west of the Salon and east of the Saloon.
Repercussions, Music, Jeff Agrell, Evan Mazunik, This unique selection of French horn + piano improvisational compositions are stylistically somewhere west of the Salon and east of the Saloon, with the pizzazz and surprises of improvisation alloyed with the sense and charm of classical music.

Customer Reviews:
great fusion.......2007-03-21
At least 4 stars. That would be my true rating. As I am writing this the album is at 3 1/2 *; that is an injustice. This record deserves more, thats why I give it 5.
This is an ESSENTIAL fusion album IMO; the freeness of miles davis, combined (at times) with the intensity of Mahavishnu; however, more chromatic. You want ambient, listen to the last track; you want intensity, listen to "Hootenanny at the pink pussycat" (4th track I believe).
Of course this is chromatic music, not completely atonal, but it is out there. If you are looking for something with pretty memorable melodies, look elsewhere; however, there are some very memorable aspects to this chromatic concotion, and I cannot emphasize how good those aspects are. It's not noise, but it is almost free form; like a jam with distinct cues. Unique, dark, sometimes ambient, intense, free fusion, with opaque, but barely transparent musical patterns that maintain independence as a part in a sequence. That sounds a bit snobby & esoteric, but it's the best description I can give; the music is hard to decipher. The lead guitar, bass and drums are all top notch. These are all 1st rate players trying something a bit different, and it came out great. Anything I say wont do it justice anyway; it's to indescribable, which is the only minus point to this darn album.
But, it's good stuff mang! If you are a fusion collector you need this.
Great adventurous jamming..........2005-06-08
with a futuristic sound but initially a let down if, like me, you prefer the polished playing of King Crimson who balance improvisation with composition. Go straight to The Power to Believe if thats the case. Rieflin is a jazzier player than Mastelotto which makes for an interesting comparison and you can tell this trio is having fun with the open ended parametres of the material.
From a musicians perspective this is a perfect non scripted environment to play, how listeners interact is personalised value judgement, I think it will be a grower for those ambient ramblings around the home!
Great Free Metal Space Jazz.......2004-09-22
Crazy man, crazy... If you liked the KCrimson Projects, especially 1 and 4 you'll love this collection of freely improvised ambient metallic and electric skronk/jazz/rock. One moment they're chewing into your brain like robotic earwigs on a mission, the next blissfully floating away on clouds of halucinogenic pepper spray. Not for those who don't enjoy musicians stepping out and communicating with one another in unprescribed ways. These boys can shred and chill. Fripp's use of electric guitar and electronics is astounding. Rieflin is an incredible drummer and Trey Gunn on touch guitar (has the range of both bass and guitar) is both subtle and thunderous. Great stuff.
The real ProjeKCt one.......2002-10-29
Let's not beat around the bush ,if you are a fan of the King Crimson ProjeKCts then you will want to own this disc.Recorded shortly before the double trio's aborted Nashville Sessions and the resulting fractalisation of KC this disc is a splendid signpost to the future and also provides us with the opportunity to hear Trey Gunn and Robert Fripp open up and go for it for the first time.
Clearly Fripp relishes working with Gunn in particular and plays with such obvious enthusiasm on this disc that it is an absolute joy to hear. This is some of his most passionate playing for years.
More akin to ProjeKCt 4 than the quirky ( but fabulous) ProjeKCt 2 this is highly recommended
Not my style.......2002-02-05
I heard the first song and was thinking this was going to be an album of powerful, interesting melodies. The remainder is different, sounding harsh to the ears and avoiding reliable or compelling rhythms. The performers are talented, and have shone elsewhere, but not here.

THIS GROUP REMINDS YOU OF THE BRAND NEW HAVIES THEY ARE REALLY PUTTING IT OUT ON THIS CD THE BAND IS HOT I DONT KNOW WHY THEY STOP AFTER THIS THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN KNOWN BY ALL GREAT MUSIC LOVERS SORRY TO SEE GOOD TALENT GO TO WASTE. GOOD BYE REPERCUSSIONS !!!!!!!!!
A great discovery!!!.......2004-01-01
I picked up this CD on a recommendation several years ago and it has since become one of my favorite CD's. It is a soul fusion set which is reminiscent of the Brand New Heavies or Groove Collective and there is not a bad cut on the album. It is very unfortunate that this group never made a follow up -- probably because not enough people discovered tis fabulous debut. Do yourself a favor and pick up this CD....You will thank me later!
If you love BNH,do not sleep on this CD.......2003-05-15
If you love the Brand New Heavies, you will love this CD. You are not going to find anything experimental on this disc, just good soul music. I had never heard of this band and I took a chance on it because of the cover. This cd has a permanent place in my player. At this price, this is a steal.

Customer Reviews:
brilliant post-punk.......2004-12-29
After a minor line-up change, the Newtown Neurotics shortened their name to just The Neurotics and came out with "Repercussions," more complex and mellow than their first lp ("Beggars can be choosers"), but with the same passion and politics. This cd also includes the Neurotics last record, "Is Your Washroom Breeding Bolsheviks?," a very mellow record with some real high points, but probably the Neurotics least inspiring recordings on the whole. This cd also includes an instrumental version of the last neurotics single, "Never Thought"--but it seems pointless since the greatness of the Neurotics is in the lyrics. Overall, this is a good deal (2 records on 1 cd) and the long out of print "Reprecussions" is well worth the money. Still awaiting "Kickstarting a backfiring Nation" and the Indestructible Beat on CD
You'll like this cd if you like any of the following: Billy Bragg, The Jam's "Setting Sons," Stiff Little Fingers, Attila the Stockbroker, Housemartins, Redskins, the first two Clash records, etc.

Product Description
Edward Mattila draws upon a wide range of approaches, digital and analog, to creating electronic music: thus the title of this retrospective recording of his works, "electrophonic". But all of his music shares a fascination with the world and its physical environment. Mattila's love of dance and his experience creating music for dancers is suggested by the vibrant movement felt in so much of his work. Some of these compositions, such as 'Caracole' or 'Movements For Computer', were in fact created specifically for dancers. But this same sense may be found in swirling sound textures of the abstract work, 'Repercussions'. The final composition on this recording, 'Dreaming Up The Cosmos', begins with the last line of a poem, 'In Xochitl in Cuicati', which forms the title of this work. The poem is by Francisco Alarcon. 'Dreaming...' is about the forces that pull at comets as they gravitate towards the sun. This phenomenon is sonically suggested here by the interaction of pulsating sounds with gentle, seemingly eternal sweeping, sustained gestures, offering a beautiful ending to this CD.

Pretty good, Better live.......2003-09-06
This CD is pretty good, though its lacking in some recording quality. I purchased this CD at the warped tour 2002 after seeing them play live and they were awesome. You'd probably only appreciate the CD after seeing them live, so if you haven't keep looking for something else
