The first two-thirds of this disc is a fascinating cram course in concert music around the time of World War I. The programmer has put together some fascinating juxtapositions--for example, Strauss's Rosenkavalier leads almost seamlessly into Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, and Schoenberg sounds out of context with everybody (including Berg). The selections are all short, and performance quality runs from great to mediocre, but this is still a thought-provoking educational experience, even though Bartók and Ives are conspicuously missing. The popular selections are less interesting, often campy, and although vintage recordings are used, they aren't always the right vintage. And someone missed a point by separating Copland's jazzy "Music for the Theatre" from Louis Armstrong, who could have followed immediately. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Music and the Great War.......2007-05-14

This is a fascinating compendium of popular and classical music from the World War One period. It evokes all the turmoil, anguish, and also humor, of the age, and is a vital CD to own if you have an interest in the Great War and the music it inspired or was inspired by.

5 out of 5 stars How a Century Has Change Our Perception of War.......2005-10-29

War. Tough subject these days - tough subject since the beginning of time. Yet Americans tend to mend wounds and gradually allow the atrocities of yesteryear to fade into coated cases that signal more memories of 'how things used to be' rather than learning from the tragedies with which war has scarred the planet. National Public Radio issued this excellent memoir at the turn of the millennium and one wonders if it now has the same response that greeted it in 1999.

Linda Kobler reconstituted this mix of classical and popular music with a keen sense of history. The CD is twice divided (in both the classical and the popular music) into 'Before the War' 1901 - 1917, 'During the War' 1917 - 1922, and 'After the War' 1922 - 1928. In the first era are the works of Elgar ('Pomp and Circumstance'), Strauss (a waltz from 'Der Rosenkavalier'), Mahler (excerpt from 'Das Lied von der Erde'), and Debussy ('La Mer') joining the songs 'Shine On Harvest Moon' and 'Alexander's Ragtime Band'. The War period is represented by Prokofiev's 'Symphony No. 1', Stravinsky's 'L'histoire du soldat', and Ravel's 'Le tombeau de Couperin' in tandem with 'Over There'. After the war include Stravinsky ('Pulcinella Suite'), Schoenberg (Waltz from 'Five Piano Pieces'), Berg (excerpt from 'Wozzeck') and Copland ('Music from the Theatre') with popular songs 'How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm', 'The Man I Love', and 'West End Blues'.

The excerpts selected for this survey are exceptionally good: orchestras include NY Phil, LA Phil, Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony, and the Columbia Symphony under such batons a Ormandy, Bernstein, Salonen, Tilson Thomas, Schippers and Stravinsky; soloists include Glen Gould, Robert Casadesus, Lili Chookaskian, Louis Armstrong, et al. The sonics are very fine and the performances are each from significant full recordings remaining in the catalogue.

The booklet accompanying this concert of memories is written by Linda Kobler who uses each selection as a pivotal point in the atmosphere of the globe that accompanied the Great War: it is very well written and informative. This is one of those recorded collections that goes far beyond an accumulation of bits and pieces and instead gives food for thought about how our political and social actions intertwine with the arts in a prophetic way. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recording!.......1999-03-13

(It was called The "Great" War, because nobody knew about WWII at the time and it was the biggest war anyone had ever seen.)

I think this CD may be a bit choppy to "easy" listeners, but for anyone who has a sincere interest in delving into the musical senses of earlier generations it's VERY good! I recommend the entire NPR Milestones of the Millennium series to such aficionados.

Since when is war great? Life in the trenches waiting for the germans to attack you worrying about whether mustard gas is gonna loft your way isn't exactly like sipping chablis.

5 out of 5 stars donýt pay attention to the negative reviews.......2006-05-12

This is for sure one of the greatest masterpieces of 20th. century music composed by the genius maestro Leonard Bernstein. Nagano did an excellent job and the sound is simply great!!! If you have the oportunity grab this one and don?t pay attention to the negative reviews, they are just people opinions.

1 out of 5 stars Colossal disappointment.......2005-09-19

We've waited over 30 years for a new recording of Mass and this is what we get? The instrumental playing is good. But this is a theater piece and cannot survive the solo and choral singing in this performance. It sounds under-rehearsed and uncommitted. I agree that Mr. Hadley does a fine job with the Fraction, but I find he misses the mark throughout the rest of the role. Why was a tenor cast in this baritone role anyway? With rare exceptions, the other soloists demonstrate neither the voice nor the spirit to do justice to their music.

We really do need a new recording that builds on the 30 plus years of performance experience with this piece. Here's hoping that Naxos lets Marin Alsop take up the challenge. Her concert performances of this work over the years surpass both of the available recordings. In the meantime, the original recording is unquestionably the one to get.

1 out of 5 stars How devoid of emotion can you get?.......2005-02-20

There are two complete recordings of MASS in the catalog: Bernstein's own reading and this Nagano thing. From the start, the performers are unengaged, bland, and completely ignorant, apparently, of the piece's content. Everything is pretty, refined, and smooth. There is no emotional drama or edge. The soloists are terrible. In Bernstein's reading, the soloists sing the sometimes cynical and sarcastic words of the text with a hard-edged, almost biting tone, reinforcing the hard-hitting words. In Nagano's version, it sounds like everyone is auditioning for the next Webber music. The vocalists are simply uninvolving, especially after one has heard the much more superb Bernstein reading. The celebrant, especially in the 'Gloria,' sounds very artificial while reciting the texts to the official Ordinary.

While cheap, I would encourage you to pass this one up. For a true, groundshaking rendering of the MASS, get Bernstein's own rendering. It will blow you away with its emotional intensity.

5 out of 5 stars Nagano's reading is a revelation.......2005-01-24

I loved Leonard Bernstein's Mass when I first heard Bernstein's recording of it in the early 1970's. Unfortunately it didn't age will with me: years later I found many of the frequent stylistic juxtapositions forced and the musical-style numbers dated. So I was very interested in Kent Nagano's new recording for Harmonia Mundi.

Nagano's reading is a revelation. I came away with a renewed interest in Bernstein as a composer, if not as a conductor. (As an old music teacher of mine said, don't rely on recordings and performances made by the composer of a score.) Nagano unifies the whole complex work with clean, brisk tempos that have well-defined relationships between sections. Jerry Hadley uses his profound skill to realize the central role of Celebrant as never happened before in Bernstein's recording; in that earlier recording, Alan Titus sings emotionally but variably. Hadley never loses sight of the overall work. His reading of the closing Fraction is amazing.

Instrumental playing is uniformly clean: I heard instrumental textures that I'd never heard in Bernstein's own recording. The choral singing is good, but the English intonation is weak, especially in some of the pop sequences.

If you're interested in revisiting a 1970's period piece, I'd highly recommend this recording.

2 out of 5 stars Stick to Bernstein's Original Recording.......2004-11-17

Having been a huge fan of Mass since I first heard Bernstein's recording when I was in college in the late 80s, I was really excited to see a new recording. While some of the ensemble playing and singing on this recording is technically better it is almost entirely without any kind of soul or emotion. Hadley is okay altough I prefer Alan Titus in the original recording. The real tragedy of this recording is the quality of the many soloists sprinkled throughout the work. They sound like trained choral singers trying to be broadway stars and the effect is awful. Although I don't know this for a fact, after hearing this recording I am convinced that the original recording must have used actual broadway singers/actors--normally not my cup of tea, but far superior to any of the soloists on the Nagano recording. There are also issues with the placement of the various ensembles and balances are disappointing both in terms of sound quality and dramatic tension.

    5 out of 5 stars Bravo! Excellent!.......2006-09-14

Brigit Nilsson is/was one of the best singers in the world. Her recent death was a great grieving for the opera world. But her wagnerian voice towers above most other singers. First on the disc are excerpts from Mozart's Don Giovanni. Her "Or sai chi l'onore" is wonderful but her "Crudele...Non mi dir" sounds labored and slow under the baton of Karl Bohm and Prauge opera orchestra. The next excerpts are from Weber's Oberon. "Ozean, du ungeheuer" and "Trau're, mein herz um verschwundenes gluck" are wonderful (but no one can surpass Hillevi Martinpelto in my opinion.) Next is Beethovens aria and scene for soprano "Ah, Perfido!" which she sings wonderfully. Next are excerpts from Wagner's Tannhauser- "Dich teure halle" and "Allmacht'ge, jungfrau" and definite treasures. Now for the big kahuna of opera songs- the libestod from Tristan and Isolde. Every soprano who has ever sung Isolde has based her voice on Nilsson's. And, to wrap up the disc we have the final scene from Strauss's Salome which is very powerful. My verdict: for the price of the disc you cannot go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars NILSSON ---- DRAMATIC SOPRANO WITHOUT EQUAL!.......2006-04-16

To detail individual items here would be an exercise in redundance. Birgit Nilsson, who recently passed away, remains the standard by which Wagnerian sopranos will be judged. True, Flagstad was equally acclaimed, but unfortunately her absolute prime was well before the time when recording studios could do her full justice. While her voice was probably warmer than Nilsson's, she lacked the ease Nilsson had on the top C. Nilsson also had the benefit of stereophonic recording during her vocal prime (which lasted quite a while). I saw Nilsson many times in actual performance, but the one which sticks out in my mind the most is a concert performance of "Salome" with the Chicago Symphony in 1974 under the baton of Georg Solti. The full Chicago Symphony Orchestra at its loudest couldn't cover the Amazonian voice of Nilsson, who sent forth a stream of sound that is still ringing in my ears. Hers was the voice ideal for Wagner, Strauss, Weber, and in a few instances, even Verdi and Puccini (no one today can sing "Turandot" the way Nilsson did!) It was a voice that became more brilliant and powerful as it climbed higher and higher. There are no voices like this today, and opera is the poorer for it. At the price of this disc, how can you possibly pass it up? That is, unless you already have the complete performances from which these excerpts are taken.

      4 out of 5 stars Essential history.......2007-06-24

Hooray for Pavilion Records and all other organizations collecting early recordings and transferring them to CD for the world to enjoy! Of course since they are EARLY recordings (1917-1927) it has that fizzy wax sound to it and the lyrics get mushy at times. That either makes it endearing or annoying, depending on your perspective. It's lovely to finally hear the Brox Sisters sing again, let John Steel's tenor soar, and to hear what You'd Be Surprised sounded like sung by a girl. The earliest songs of Irving Berlin may not be his best, but are a refreshing glimpse into his 30s. Half of the songs on this disc debuted in Berlin's own Music Box Revue at the theater he built after WWI.

            Customer Reviews:

            4 out of 5 stars A memento of a productive partnership........2001-11-19

EMI commemorate in this double CD a remarkable partnership in the C20th world of music. It began in Berlin in 1926. It had been 20 years since Franz Lehar's "Die lustige Witwe" became the light opera that everyone wanted to see. In places like Beunos Aires it had run simultaneously in five theatres in five different languages. Lehar's subsequent productions had met with diminishing success. His latest light opera, "Paganini", which contained some of his best music, had flopped at its Vienna premiere. Nervous and dispirited as its Berlin premiere drew near, Lehar wrote to the tenor Richard Tauber, "You must sing in Berlin, a second flop is inconceivable for me. I'm suddenly afraid of everything to do with the theatre - I'm getting old".

Tauber obliged. The Berlin production was a resounding success, Tauber sometimes being required to repeat "Gern hab' ich die Frau'n gekusst" as many as five times. Lehar admitted, "Richard, during this moment I have been born again as an artist!" And so began a great final flowering of Lehar theatre productions, all featuring the Austrian tenor Richard Tauber.

Fortunately the Lehar-Tauber association resulted in an extensive series of recordings, in many of which Lehar conducts the orchestra. EMI began issuing a collection of them towards the end of the LP era, and now, in 2001, they are collected onto this double CD. I read the claim that a great many of the tracks appear on CD for the first time, but here in Australia most have already been available on CD.

I don't always find Tauber unexcelled in this repertoire, preferring other tenors sometimes and their recordings. Several of the "Paganini" recordings were made before the Berlin season opened. Tauber and his then wife Carlotta Vanconti sound as though they are sight-reading unfamiliar music. I once possessed several of the "Das Land des Lachelns" items on 78s. The 1929 sound seemed robust and full then, but seems sadly emasculated here.

Tauber, I believe, somehow had the secret of touching the hearts and minds of all who listened to his singing - composers, colleagues, chancellors and charwomen. This comprehensive and well-planned issue will ensure that his work with the Hungarian composer Franz Lehar will continue to charm and delight.
