Who can fault an artist who so clearly embraces a one-planet, one-people worldview? Someone who recruits guest instrumentalists from every hemisphere to underscore his fondness for multiculturalism and convey his wish for global harmony? You can't help but admire Yanni, the Greek keyboardist/composer, even while acknowledging such nobility does not always translate into deeply satisfying music. On this, the audio-only component of his third made-for-television concert production (filmed in 2005 in Las Vegas), Yanni continues in his adopted role of True Egalitarian, playing a few bars to open a piece, then fading into the background to let other musicians (on violin, trumpet, sax, didgeridoo, hammer dulcimer, even keyboards) command the music's flow. A lovely gesture, but one that often results in extended soloing that sidetracks, even derails, the focus of the music. (Consider "Playtime," where Ming Freeman plays the jazzy piano solo, and the disc's previously unreleased track, "The Storm," pairing violinists Samvel Yervinyan and Sayaka Katsuki in a showy duet that is reminiscent of something from Bond.) Thus while the musicianship is first-rate, the production is superb, and some tracks are terrific (too bad "Standing in Motion" fades out so quickly), this disc is more about the jamming and less about staying on compositional task. Likely this project will be better appreciated in its DVD version, where the staging and artist interaction is on display. Meanwhile, some longtime fans may be left yearning for a day when Yanni will step up to his keyboards, drop the hammer, and let his own muse rock. --Terry Wood

Sounds A Bit Like M E H D I.......2007-07-06
Oh, Wow! This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnett. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Celtic Women, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.
ALSO RECOMMENDED: M E H D I ~ Instrumental Paradise Volume 8..A True Gem.
His best yet!.......2007-05-23
I saw this concert live and couldn't wait to order the DVD. It's truly a global music event - paraguayan harp, digeridoo, fantastic violinist "duels" - each musician an exceptional talent. Together they are fireworks!
Yanni in Concert.......2007-05-15
I bought the CD and DVD - the CD is great, but the DVD in fantastic - this concert is beyond your wildest dreams - just crank up the volume and enjoy. No drugs required - just get a nigh on this great condert.
Simply The BEST!.......2007-05-14
I've always been a fan of Yanni, & I though I ordered the last album, which is different than the Live Concert.
When I checked Yanni's Website, I knew I ordered the wrong CD (Live Concert)
But I never regretted it, I don't know how could I have not hear it.
I've been playing the CD in my car for more than a month continuously. I cannot stop listening to it!
If you like new age & specially Yanni, You SHOULD get this CD!
Extremely recommended.
Beautiful.......2007-04-06
CD, so much life and intensity! DVD: I love to see how the musicians interact and associate with each other and the music.

By now, everyone knows how adventurous Radiohead are, which makes this live record--a hairy rock-band cliché--seem like a strange capper to their decidedly cliché-rejecting records. But throughout the hubbub surrounding Kid A, and its Amnesiac companion piece, Radiohead never embraced the notion that they're reinventing anything. Even while a tempest of critics hailed the band as saviors, pulling rock from the jaws of consumerist self-destruction, the band ignored it all, going into stadiums and working out their twisted angst through angry, direct means. "National Anthem"'s fuzzed-out riff rages aggressively behind Thom Yorke's crazed, breath-scat vocal, giving the song a rollicking edge that was nowhere on Kid A. The same effect is heard on "Idioteque," as Yorke, getting backup vocal help from the crowd, sings over an acoustic beat, removing the distant, electronic touch of the studio version. "True Love Waits" aptly ends the record with Yorke and a solo acoustic guitar, which finds just the right touch on a song that Radiohead have played with for years (long-term fans should note the first ever appearance on record of the track). In the end, Radiohead don't really stray too far from the original templates of these songs, they merely play up the highs and milk the lows, just like any good rock band should. -- Matthew Cooke

Umm...where is "Fake Plastic Trees"? .......2007-03-25
Okay. I love Radiohead to death. But i have one problem. Where in the heck is "Fake Plastic Trees"? That song is supposed to be on here. Live Recordings? I am so glad that the dreadful "Creep" isn't on here, although it wouldn't be too terribley bad. I am happy with everything else, but am saddened that "Trees" didn't make the cut. I wonder why? Is the song not good enough? I have heard the song played live plenty of times, and that's why i'm surprised that it isn't on here. Oh well. I'm not complaining as much as i could be. :)
RADIOHEAD Is my favorite band, but..........2007-03-06
First, let me say that Radiohead is BY FAR my favorite band, and I've listened to many. The reason I gave this CD only three stars is not because it is bad (the quality of Radiohead's material makes that nearly impossible), but because it could have been MUCH better. How could it have been better? Firstly, I heard the live version of "The National Anthem" at the Glastonberry Festival, and it is much better and all-around harder rocking than this much-vaunted version. Secondly, the recording quality is sub-par, which is generally not a huge problem, but Radiohead is a band that cannot be truly appreciated without good recordings. Finally, there is only 8 songs on here, and while "True Love Waits" is an appreciated inclusion, there should've been more tracks, especially for the price of admission.
great.......2007-01-14
incredible live versions of 7 previously recorded radiohead songs, plus one song (true love waits) that has never been released before, incredible sound and performance
Can't See Them Live? Buy This........2006-07-13
So we all know that a CD can't replace the live experience, but this one definitely withstands the test of time. The recording values are unparalleled by other band's live sets and the song selections capture the band's adventurous ethos from the first second. From the opening radio static of "The National Anthem" to the the final acoustic fade-out of "True Love Waits," this album surprises almost every time you listen to it, both in the ways in which Yorke & Co. complicate the original studio versions and in the performance abandon which they bring to their songs; you can hear it coming from the speakers.
Radiohead is the best live band I have ever had the privilege to witness (and I've seen Floyd, the Stones, et al). I've seen them in Grant Park in Chicago and in the Sound Advice Amphitheatre in Boca Raton. Both times I've had epiphonies (sonic epiphanies) attending their performance (these were certainly aided by the monster video screens and certain unnamed chemicals). I am struck by how well these epiphonies translate to CD here. "Morning Bell" is especially effective on this CD (just like it is in the flesh). When the band goes out into the electrosphere on their assorted gadgetry, it goes to such unexpected places that one can't help but swoon into oblivion (video/chemical-aided or otherwise, I can attest). This unexpected element is what keeps them at their place as the best band out there today; they are constantly able to surprise themselves, I am sure. You hear such prime examples of this aleatory sublime on this live CD, certainly in a much better fashion on the myriad bootlegs that exist of their live shows. The editing, recording, and performances on here are all superb. Buy this, whether you've seen them live or not.
There are two colors in my head.......2006-07-05
While this may just be a release of live songs that have already been released, it is a must have in my opinion. The songs that I like best are; Like Spinning Plates, Everything in It's Right Place, and Dollars and Cents. The live versions equal or better the originals. In many cases I feel they are more powerful. True Love Waits is also good. I'm not sure what release if any that one is from.

Album Description
Klaus Schulze's twelfth solo album was originally released in 1980 and received brilliant reviews such as the following "There is almost no-one who can hold a candle to him as a live musician performing on the synthesizer."
The ever creative Klaus Schulze produced this remarkable live album consisting of 4 extended compositions recorded in Amsterdam 1979, Berlin 1976 and Paris 1979. At the time he declared that it would be his last live recording and the appearance of Crazy Arthur Brown on Dymagic was the highlight of the four command performances presented here. Sense is literally pulsating and captivating which includes very sharp and precise percussion work - the whole album is simply electronic music at its finest. The bonus track Le Mans Au Premier is taken from a concert at the Abbey L'Epeau near Le Mans in France on November 10, 1979.
Klaus Schulze first attracted attention as a member of the German progressive rock band, Tangerine Dream. Following the release of their debut LP, Electronic Meditation, he departed for a solo career. Klaus' recorded work typically features extended pieces sometimes filling an entire album built around computer-generated synthesizers and other specially programmed electronic effects. Klaus Schulze remains a cult figure in the United States, where the bulk of his prolific output has until now been available only through the import bins. He is widely considered an avant-garde mainstay as well as a founding father of both the new-age space music and electronica genres.

Yanni can be likened to 1970s rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer. There are several basic parallels, especially in this orchestra-enhanced concert reworking of his more propulsive, anthemic compositions. Yanni, who in concert sometimes strikes the rapturous two-keyboard "iron-cross" pose that served as one of Keith Emerson's trademarks, uses, as ELP did, classical and world-music influences to elevate pop-inclined compositions to more sophisticated levels. He then turbocharges the whole concoction with bold strokes of prog-rock bravura to give his finest pieces a dramatic, chest-swelling, larger-than-life impact. A key difference between the two acts, of course, is Yanni possesses a much stronger romantic streak, plus he refrains from attacking his keyboards with sharp objects. At his best, Yanni strikes incendiary sparks with the driving, celebratory quality of his music, and this production, culling some of the best audio moments from his much-televised 1993 concert performance in Athens, is a most appealing showcase. Yanni can sometimes strike the sonic hammer as forcefully as a Greek god ("Santorini," "Keys to Imagination") and, on this album at least, gives even overtly romantic pieces ("One Man's Dream," "Swept Away") a warmly masculine flair. Beautifully arranged and recorded; a pleasure to experience. --Terry Wood
Album Description
* Expanded package includes new photos and new liner notes. * The DVD features the most dramatic footage filmed of Yanni live in concert. * The DVD contains backstage interviews and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the video.
On the night of September 25, 1993, beneath the golden glow of the Parthenon, a standing-room-only crowd assembled to witness a stunning spectacle of sight and sound. The majestic stone arches of the 2,000 year-old Herod Atticus Theatre became the setting for a performance of a lifetime. The passionate crowd warmly embraced its native son, internationally known composer and performer, Yanni, who was returning home after two decades in America.

Live at The Acropolis DVD.......2005-11-02
If you're going to buy one Yanni DVD this would be the one. It's just plain excellent in all aspects of performance, production, & songs. Anything Yanni did after this production (either CD or DVD) just illustrates how he suborned his artistic talents and started chasing the dollar.

Yaani CD Review - Live at the Accropolis.......2007-05-19
Great CD I have been enjoying listening for about a year.
Best of the Best.......2007-03-21
I loved this concert,Yanni played with so much passion that you can closed your eyes and He take you out of this world and His music is very Beautiful nobody plays like Yanni.
Terrific!.......2006-08-18
I am a male very senior citizen who, somehow, never learned a thing about music. I can't read music and the only instrument I can play is a harmonica, which I play by ear on rare occasions when I drag out my Hohner Chromatic. Thus I am perplexed by the technical critiques I have read in these pages about Yanni and his music.
I know only that I think this album is terrific and I like every selection. I think it helps to watch the video of this performance, then enjoy the CD. I give it a big thumbs up!
Wonderful IntroTo Mehdi.......2006-04-14
I've always enjoyed Yanni and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered a group by the name of Mehdi (pronounced meddie). After an online search I found their site (SoothingMusic - Com) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Yanni fan, I find Mehdi to be a wonderful addition to this CD. I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.

buy/illegally download this album just for track 5 "Standing in Motion."
that song alone makes it all worth it. good God in Heaven, it's the best song ever and i wish upon sweet Jesus that i could have been there to see it. i would have raised my hands to the heavens in praise of the Almighty. i hope i'm making it clear that i think it's divine.

a classic.......2006-12-16
This set is one of the best and also a classic set of Tiesto's. His track selection was great for this one. If you listen to it and you are in the right mood, you will get goosebumps when you hear the crowd . If you have been to any great party, concert, or event when the crowd cheers and you get goosbumps...then you will know what I mean.
A solid release, but it's live all right.......2006-09-25
At first I too found the occasional audience noise distracting if not outright annoying, especially on the quieter parts, but after several listens I don't notice the crowd as much. I would have preferred the audience to be excised completely from the recording but what are you gonna do? Because this is a really good cd with an excellent choice of tracks and a very good flow and vibe to it I recommend it. DJ Tiësto proves once again why he is considerred a top DJ (MUCH better than that Amin Van Urine clown). Just beware of the audience noise.
Takes a while.......2006-09-21
By the third track, this album should have engulfed you. If not, I don't know what to tell you. The transitions aren't that smooth, but there is a classic feel to this album.
One of the best trance cd's ever!.......2006-07-16
This is a very nice set! All of the tracks are really good and I highly recommend it. Take it from someone who knows their electronic music. A must have!!
Everything he's done and why he does it!.......2006-04-27
The reason why Tiesto is and always will be the best Trance DJ on the planet is because he does not do it for money its because he loves the music and the way it affects the people he plays it for. Its all about the music and always will be. every mix or album he has put together or mixed is emotional thats why its so good.

Following two sensational studio albums, the Vienna-based electronica chill-meisters are live and organic here. Dzihan's keyboards and Kamien's guitars and samples are heard at the crest of a hip one-world sonic universe, supported by a hand-picked battalion of top-notch international talent. Vocalists Ma. Dita (performing in English) and Özden Öksüz, DJ "Mangito" Mango, and super-percussionist Sammy Figueroa (who has played with Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, John Scofield, Stevie Wonder, and David Bowie---you can't get much cooler than that) are flanked by smoldering Turkish drummers, strings, reeds, and brass. The result resembles a late-night love-in between Isaac Hayes (wah-wah firmly in place), Barry White, retro Latin jazz, classic Middle-Eastern massed-violin vamps, and Pink Floyd, augmented by white-hot trumpet solos and filigreed Islamic calls to prayer. The album includes a bonus disc of remix tracks, wherein "Drophere" undergoes three treatments while "Slibdub," "Stiff Jazz," and "Ford Transit" reveal glimmering new facets. --Christina Roden
Album Description
This stunning live album is one of those rare moments when a producer duo, well known from the electronic club genre prove that it is possible to cross the border into the world of performing live with real instruments. Live in Vienna grew out of dZihan & Kamien's desire to do something special for the release party for their last studio CD, Gran Riserva. With the help of the Austrian government, 22 people were gathered on stage at Porgy and Bess, one of the most famous jazz clubs in Vienna. Master musicians from Turkey to Miami formed a "dreamteam" to translate the dZihan & Kamien sound into an orchestral performance featuring the downtempo duo's signature blend of cool jazz, dancefloor beats and Eastern strings.
The North American version of this release features a special bonus disc of dZihan & Kamien remixes- many of which have been previously unavailable in this country.

This is a lot of music !!! Deep and Good..........2005-06-22
The chillout/downtempo/electronic music gurus go live. WOW !
This is a deep album from the MASTERS D&K with an incredible array of talented musicians that make this masterpiece a phenomenal purchase. There is so much music in here that is difficult to describe. There's funky bass (if you're a bass player, you gotta have this CD), strings, horns, insane percussion (unreal), sexy vocals (great talented singers), all beautifully combined with that electronica sound D&K are known for.
World Music? Yes.
Jazz? Yes.
Electronic Downtempo/Chillout? Yes.
Funk? Yes.
Boring? NEVER !
Fact is, that after listening to this you will be wondering if this is the original D&K who put this orchestra together to make these tracks sound so organic or if this is a really talented jazz jam band. This CD is so good, it won't be out of rotation for a very very long time... This is the one live album that makes you wish you'd been there to see it with your own eyes...
UPDATE: After a full year with this CD, I have to upgrade it to a 5-star rating.
Incredible Live CD!.......2005-03-21
First off I have to say that I am usually not a big fan of live concert CD's. I am a huge live music fan, but generally I find the energy of a great concert lost in traslation to CD. Not so with this little wonder! I have heard little bits of Dzihan & Kamien on various Six Degrees compilations over the years, but I was wholly unprepared for the absolute monstrosity of the musicians and arrangements on this CD. As a musician I know how difficult it is to achieve tight arrangements and subtle dynamics with a large group of musicians. Apparently I have totally underestimated these guys... D & K are great musicians in their own right and they have assembled the tightest, heaviest, tastiest "orchestra" on the planet. An incredible feat in itself, but to bring their catalog of material to such heights as this is simply astounding. Rhythm, strings, horns, percussion, guitars, DJ, vocals, this band has absolutely no weak links. All these songs are great.. I keep thinking I am going to get sick of this but it's been stuck in the changer for almost six months with no signs of leaving the "A" rotation. I am wearing holes in the carpet dancing to it. I really hope this piece of work doesn't fall through the cracks between the genres that it covers, because it truly transcends mere jazz, trip-hop, electronica, funk, and worldbeat. I am really surprised that this has not completely blown up because it is HUGE. I remain hopeful that we will get some sort of tour out of these guys, for now I will just turn it up and imagine...
The things you find..........2004-12-01
I got this on the recommendation of Amazon, who sent me an email telling me of its release. I took a gamble, thinking that if it was no good, I could palm it off as a Christmas present to some drum and bass fanatic.
The truth is, this CD isn't going anywhere in a hurry. From the first track, I heard the bass loud, the drums clear and the rest of the band tight. From then on, it just got better as brass licks and other ostinatos started flying about driving and authoritive percussion and bass lines.
This CD has already earned a spot up there with the Nightmares on Wax and Thievery Corporation collection. The thing that sets this one apart is that it is a fun CD. NOW and T.C are polished, and absolutely brilliant at their game, but this CD really reminds me of what playing music is about. It ain't about getting up in front of thousands of people and showing them how good you are, but it's more about getting together with the intention of going to another place. The musicianship on this CD certainly takes the crowd/listener there, and I would be surprised if the muso's themselves were not moved also. This is truly a brilliant CD if you like music. There's no star of the show, no big name single to draw you in. Track 1 is as good as the middle of the album, and the middle is as good as the end. If you're into groove, trip hop, or just plain good music played with passion, then this CD will not dissapoint you. I for one will look for more of this outfit's work!
Live and better than ever!.......2004-09-17
Dzihan and Kamien have always drawn comparissons to that "other" Vienna act you may have heard about...Kruder and Dorfmeister. Both crews are mutual fans of each others work and have even remixed tracks for each other. I've always thought the comparissons were a little bit off but here on their first live album, D & K really come into their own. While on their studio albums things can tend to be a little too electronic for a K & D comparisson, on "Live" we see D & K strip things down and present tracks from their last studio album with a full band and even a string section! The results? By stripping back the sounds and creating a more organic feel, D & K's songs sound more alive than ever before! As if this werent enough, for the North American release, D & K have included a bonus disc of tracks from their last album remixed by the likes of Richard Dorfmeister & Rodney Hunter and Howie B as well as a rework by themselves as well. This package is not to be missed if your a fan of smooth nu-jazz and funk. D & K may live up to those K & D comparissons yet!

Like its predecessor, this installment in the Live at the Future Primitive Soundsession series features two DJs on five turntables in a live performance at a San Francisco club. Z-Trip and Radar might not be quite as well-known as Cut Chemist (Ozomatli, Jurassic 5) or Shortkut (Invisibl Skratch Piklz), but that doesn't make them any less impressive on the turntables. In fact, their set--built around a lot of classic rock (Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion," Rush's "Tom Sawyer") and hip-hop (Black Sheep's "This or That," LL Cool J's "Rock the Bells," and many more)--is, if anything, more fun than their counterparts' effort. Listening to favorites like the Beastie Boys' "Hey Ladies," Queen's "Flash's Theme," and Eric B & Rakim's "Paid in Full" reimagined in this setting gives the songs a whole new life. An instant party. --Randy Silver

It Would be a F--king Crime to Not Own This Album.......2004-08-09
A friend of mine (Kyle Bradley you're a Bad Mother F--ker like Samuel Jackson's wallet) burned a live show of DJ Z-Trip performing in Los Angeles. I played it and it blew my brains out onto a wall. Whenever I play the CD for anyone, they always want a copy for themselves. The same goes for this album. Separately, Z-Trip and Radar are both mega-talents in the hip-hop field, but they're two very distinctively, different DJ's. If you check the album out, you'll notice that Z-Trip is the orchestrator who digs in those crates and finds the obscure party breaks, melding your favorites, mixing 70's & 80's rock, old & new school rap, r&b, and even heavy metal instrumentals (Uneasy Listening-"A must have mixtape", Rolling Stone). Radar, on the other slip mats, assassinates the wax, literally leaving the records in pain after cutting their vinyl throats. This album is exactly what any hip-hop, or rock head needs for a good party. Throw this in with the prior installment of Future Primitive Vol. 1 and you'll have friends buzzing off the music more than the drinks. Check out Volume 3 in the future (no pun intended) with Cut Chemist and Z-Trip on the same album...or so it has been rumored.
Only the Beginning.......2003-10-26
Growing up in Phoenix in the mid 90's I was searching 4 sumthing new in music. Heard Z-Trip spinnin on Majik 107(not around anymore) spinnin new hip hop & new underground sounds live... followed him 2 all the spots he spun...meantime Radar was innovatin a scratch & creatin music off of only one table. 2 of the best dj's in my opinion...came together along with Emile... creating the Bomb Shelter Djs... Now...I wasn't amazed @ their sudden explosion across the globe. I already knew how good these guys were. These guys R hella good. Z can rock parties of any type. Radar...U can find him performing with ASU orchestra behind him live in AZ. I jam this cd a lot while herding sheep or working at my assembly job... Instant classic...even my Old Skool Rock Dad loves it. Buy this CD...its only a taste of whats 2 come soon again from these true pioneers on the turntable.
Fan-spanking-tastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-03-23
if you like DJ culture, old rock and rap songs, then you would be a silly [twit] to not own this CD. i first heard about Radar and Z-trip when a friend of mine came back from the Coachella dance festival thing. well, lucky enough, my local "megamusic chain" store had it in stock. it now becomes a proud edition to my family of CDs. the best thing about this is it's a live recording, and they pull some great scratching, and beat matching, with hardly a mistake. ive copied mine, and keep the original nice and clean. the track selection is awesome too. this is the future of music. what a classic...
just plain fun, great cd.......2002-12-27
this cd is absolutely great. z-trip plays music from so many genres and mixes them all together in a high energy, eclectic party sound. playing zepplin to run dmc to ozzy to pink floyd to anything in the middle. just a great, fun listening experience.
Dopest 5 turntable madness you will hear.......2002-03-28
If you are ever in question of what CD to listen to...Pop this puppy in your deck and enjoy. Z-tip and Radar bring some of the most creative mixes (Biggie & Floyd, Steve Miller & LL Cool J, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Erik B, Aerosmith, and the Who...all make grand appearences). The scratching and remixing of songs on the fly is excellent and the musical taste will get any party going. I am still amazed, three years later, at some of the stuff these guys did (LIVE, none the less). This CD was put into my stereo and it took seriously, two months to come out. You do not grow tired of it. By the way, if you go on a road trip, bring this album. It is by far the best road trip mix to nod your head to. I have yet to meet one unsatisfied customer.

Psychedelic Hippie Space Prog Rock NEVER Dies!.......2006-03-16
One way to envision the advent of progressive rock in the very late 1960's is as an offshoot of psychedelic rock. Think of it this way: in the mid-late sixties, through the use of marijuana and LSD, many talented musicians, raised on standard rock and roll, began to see the potential of rock and roll to incorporate other musical genres and thereby create more evolved, complex music to fire the imagination. This they did, and thus the psychedelic era of the sixties came into being. The Beatles are a primary example of this phenomenon.
Perhaps some time shortly after this, one of these drug-crazed, talented musicians might have had a revelation thulsy: "you know, this 'music' stuff is pretty cool. If we could just stop smoking pot for a while, we could really do something with it." And thus, the Progressive Rock movement was born. Talented, clear-headed musicians, comitted to incorporating alternative genres into rock in order to fulfill its potential as an art form, creating complex, innovative music that would be prized and imitated for decades to come.
Well, Gong is the band that apparently didn't get that memo. Think of them as a bunch of very talented, creative musicians and artists who do love music, but feel quite secure in the notion that they can smoke their pot, drop their acid and, through the haze, still manage to make some pretty good music, thank you very much.
And so they do. There really isn't any band quite like these guys. Listening to them live onstage, there has never been a band so utterly free of the notion of professional obligation to the zeitgeist. They do their thing, they do whatever they please, and fortunately people buy tickets so they can put gas in the bus. The music is totally off the wall, totally ridiculous, and totally fun- you can tell how much fun the musicians are having onstage, and the sensation rubs of as you listen.
They have apparently still not got the message. At their "planetgong" website, there are pictures of longhaired, white bearded, scrawny old men in ridiculous costumes playing guitars in front of the same rainbow backdrops they must have using back in 1972- and even THEN it must have been an anachronism. I don't know why Deadheads don't follow these people now that Jerry's gone- they do "hippie-go-lucky" better than the dead ever did.
Take it from Gong- reality is overrated. Go and make your own. Since it's up to you, make your new reality one in which people frolick around carefree all day long, loving each other. And when you do, make Gong the House Band for your new reality- they'll know exactly what to do to make you feel right at home.
A compilation of concerts from 73-75 and one studio outtake .......2006-01-16
This album was not released until 1977 and is a great compilation of spirited and dynamic live performances recorded during the 1973-1975 timeframe. The live recordings were taken from concerts at (1) Salle Bataclan Paris, (2) the Edinburgh Festival, (3) Club Arc-en-Ciel (Roanne), (4) BBC Studios, and (5) the Marquee Club, while one track is actually a studio outtake from the You sessions (Where have all the flowers gone?). Fortunately, the live performances do not fall prey to the problems that plague live albums - there are no lengthy (and seemingly endless) solos and incredibly dull "note-for-note" reproductions of the studio pieces. Rather, the pieces are very lively and feature excellent group improvisations that expand the studio works far beyond their original configurations. Although the performances by all members are outstanding, I feel compelled to single out drummer Pierre Moerlen who simply blazes - his playing on this album is truly something to behold. For those folks that love the Daevid Allen lineup, I think it is worth indicating that the music is played by three different lineups, which are identified in the liner notes as lineups A, B, and C. Lineup A (Tracks 1-6 and 11) includes Allen, Smyth, Malherbe, Howlett, Hillage, Blake, and Moerlen; Lineup B (Tracks 7-10) is the same, with the exception of the replacement of Pierre Moerlen with Rob Tate, and the addition of Di Stewart (vocals/percussion); and Lineup C (Tracks 12-15) features Hillage, Howlett, Lemoine, Bauer, Moerlen, Malherbe, and Giraudy (the Shamal lineup). With respect to the different lineups, I missed Pierre's superb drumming on the Lineup B performances, and I have to say that although the players are excellent, Lineup C did not do much for me - I really missed Tim Blake's atmospheric, bubbling synthesizer work on pieces such as Isle of Everywhere and Master Builder (from You, 1974). It's not that keyboardist Patrice Lemoine is bad - it's just that instrumentation that includes only electric organ (and a virtually buried mini-moog) really does not lend that spacey effect that made the You album so amazing. Guitarist Steve Hillage however, puts in a great performance and Pierre Moerlen simply rips. One last thing - the liner notes indicate that the piece entitled "Ooby-Scooby-Doomsday or the D-Day DJs got the DDT Blues" was not included on the CD due to time limitations. This piece does, however, turn up on the remastered version of Angels Egg. All in all, I have to say that this is a good live document that more or less captures the essence of 73-75 period Gong. In spite of the fact that there may be better live recordings of Gong out there, this is certainly readily available to most people and is pretty darn cheap. Recommended.
excellant overview.......2005-09-25
released in 1977 but recorded in various venues between 1973-75 this version of gong contains the classic lineup of daevid allen, tim blake and steve hillage and while angel's egg is probably their finest work, this is a supreme example of space rock while providing an excellant overview of the daevid allen era. daevid allens's compositions seem to be underated in their ability to convey an otherworldly sense of mystery and joy of discovery, and this album realizes the full spectrum of his skill as a bandleader. the entire band shines, with the transcendant and beautiful sax of didier malherbe, the incredible psychedelic atmosphere created by tim blake's synth work (a pioneer in the field who doesn't seem to be given enough credit for creating the spacey sounds of space rock), the understated and sophisticated drumwork of pierre moerlen(rip), but most impressive is probably hillage, whose sonic explorations on guitar electrify the music with a possessed fervor and established his reputation as a supreme guitarist in the field. simply wonderful. reccomended for all gong fans and space rock fans.
Gong - 'Live Etc.' (Caroline) 4 1/2 stars.......2005-08-05
'Live Etc' is an absolute must-have compilation for all true Gong fans.It features a total of fifteen live tracks of tunes that originally appeared on the band's key albums 'Camembert Electrique','Flying Teapot','Angel's Egg' and 'You'.Taken from unreleased live soundboard tapes(I assume)from shows between 1973-75.Absolute best cut here is "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" along with "6/8 Tune",that are the disc's only unreleased material.Other cosmic gems include "Dynamite/I Am Your Animal","Isle Of Everywhere","Oily Way" and "Master Builder".Duration is 78:33.Heard they wanted to add the 16th cut that was originally on the 2-lp record, but the CD simply wouldn't hold it.Talk about wanting to give your fans their money's worth.Long live the mother Gong ship!Recommended.
Tremendous Live Gong!.......2004-10-06
Both this and the transitional "Shamal" L.P. are in dire need of domestic or Japanese remastering. Let's go, people! Enough already with the shoddy, poor acoustic early '90's CD reproductions. These 2 releases are both critical components of the Gong catalogue and the audience is waiting!
