Familiar to many listeners for the stunning interpretations of a program of early Mendelssohn String Symphonies, Patrick Strub and Arcata Chamber Orchestra return this month in two of Shostakovich’s most popular scores. The First Piano Concerto – virtually a concerto grosso for Trumpet, Piano and Strings is one of the composer’s most immediately appealing scores. Peppered with sparkling charm and a playful sense of humor, soloists Mursky and Bauer give a spirited performance. The Chamber Symphony, actually a reworking of the Eighth String Quartet, is a gripping work dedicated “To the Memory of Victims of Fascism and War”. A difficult score to bring off effectively with the expanded instrumentation, Strub’s disciplined players generate drama while being true to the elegiac qualities at the work’s core.

Tchaikovsky and Tchai.......2006-07-17

I wondered what do Tchaikovsky and Tea have in common, and then I remembered that in many countries across the world - the word for tea is "tchai". That aside, yes, this is a refreshing blend of music, perfect for tea time - relaxing and reviving at the same time, and quite a bit dreamy.

Teatime...or otherwise........2005-11-02

I've owned this for years & play it often. It IS perfect for teatime, as it makes pleasant background music which you can talk over....but is also great w/volume up in car w/it's rambunctious side and incredible instrumentation. A really nice blend of Tchaikovsky's pieces.

Tchaikovsky's Dreamier Music: A Soothing Album.......2005-07-31

"Set your Life to Classical Music" is a fine album series that feature beautiful classical music for background music of any occasion- weddings, barbecues, breakfast, beauty sleep, bathtime, reading a book, romantic dinner, massages you name it. And indeed many classical pieces are perfectly therapeutic sessions in themselves. This album features the more intimate-sounding, soulful, sweet and relaxing tunes of Tchaikovsky. He did compose heavier and more dramatically intense music- his later symphonies, his Overtures and operas. But here we hear no Russian fire or harshness. Instead we are treated to the charming Mozartian style works of the Roccoco Variations and the Piano Trios. The disc also features the Andantino from his Piano Concerto No. 1 - and that piece is almost a Chopin Nocturne, with beautiful soft rubato and dream-like qualities. Included here is also the Pas De Deux and Odette and Siegfried theme from his ballet Swan Lake, lilting and graceful as the dancers movements themselves. The dance divertissements from Nutcracker round out the ballet segments with charming allure. The melancholy String Quartet and Serenade For Strings is here as well and not to mention the beautiful, wistful excerpts from the ballet Sleeping Beauty, his greatest ballet. The Panorama and Vision of Aurora played with delicate strings and sublime technicality. This is indeed a "refreshing blend for body and spirit" and is in fact perfect to listen to while drinking tea cosnidering you drink tea. I have tried it and believe me the experience is very soothing and refreshing. Try putting this on in your miniature CD player with headphones, then go out into an outdoor, natural environment, a park or a backyard garden or patio, and drink tea or read a book and you will find this is a fine companion.

Beautiful.......2003-08-25

One of the best aspects of Tchiakovsky's music is the ocnsistency: he just DIDN'T compose any bad pieces. And with such consistency, you can compile a CD such as this.
THis CD gives you a proper taste of Tchaikovsky's style, and is a very nice sampler of some of his most famous works. This CD lacks some of his more energetically volatile works, but it thus lives up to its title. It is extremely relaxing, and soothes you as you listen to it. The works are melodic, and the orchestras and soloists are superb, especially in the Serenade and the Rococco Variations. I highly recommend this CD for anyone, even if you aren't a huge classical music fan.

Tchaikovsky's Most Enchanting Tunes.......2000-08-19

Like the title suggest, a good companion for tea time. Or any time. The music of Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky is beautiful, lyrical and full of a grace and charm that parallels to Mozart's. A great collection of music by the legendary Russian composer. He had a gift for making music in a style that did not sway away from Russian folk music but that added a Classical perfection, or better yet a Romantic mastership. Who can forget the Sleeping Beauty suite. Here is the Panorama scene.. gorgeous music. I recommend the entire ballet score. The Nutcraker and Swan Lake are also here. The Piano concerto no. 1 in B, Andante Cantibile and so much more. I garauntee any listener satisfaction.

It was faulty on the last title to be played The Carnival of Venice.......2007-06-01

I returned this to New Castle. Box 15550. I have heard nothing. The date of the return was 15/05/07 from my Throop postoffice in Dorset. I sent it recorded delivery. Over to you. There was nothing on the return screen to explain the fault. ie faulty track. So after many attempts to get intouch I sent it to the address on the paper inside the parcel. Please help.

Awesome Collection!.......2006-07-04

As a young boy I would play my trumpet from my father's old Arban's method book. My private trumpet teacher (Mr. Bonfield) would love to play duets with me from the Merchant of Venice. One day I heard Wynoton Marsailas play a a flawless rendition of The Merchant of Venice on my local clasical radio station. It was flawless and brought back many fond memories of studiying the trumpet as a youngster with my beloved teacher. This collection contains that rendition and a wide selecton of clasical trumpet pieces. You may not recognize every song, but you will enjoy the high quality of the music and artists on this CD. Anyone looking for an introduction to quality, classical, trumpet music should buy this CD. The price also makes this an affordable must for any true trumpet fan.

This is a splendid anthology of music. Traditional Baroque and orchestral pieces up front, and a few surprises nearer the end. A splendid work. The price makes it a steal. Add it to your cart. You will not be sorry. There is technical excellence - peace in some of the songs and real energy in others.

Wonderful edition to your trumpet collection........2003-10-21

Trumpet fans should all own this album, that is if they don't already own all of the pieces on here on separate recordings (it would take a while to obtain them all). This recording features a bunch of great classical trumpeters and innovators such as Armando Ghitalla, Phil Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Mark Gould, H.L. Clarke, Ron Romm, Charles Schleuter, William Vacchiano, and more. Great performances of Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2", the Haydn and Hummel Concertos, Wynton's excellent performance of J.B. Arban's "The Carnival Of Venice", the New England Brass Ensemble performing "Trumpet Voluntary", a very good job done by a Baroque Orchestra of the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets, "The Three Aces" played by H.L. Clarke, and Leroy Anderson's classic "A Bugler's Holiday".

Overall this is a great listen to some of the best trumpet players of all-time in this idiom. All of the pieces are impeccably played by some of the best. I didn't discover this tape in my collection until recently, and boy I'm glad I did.

Quite the CD.......2001-04-17

If I were you, I would buy this CD. It is a diverse collection of amazing performances of quintessential pieces - an important addition to any classical music fan's collection. Heck, even if you're not big on classical music (or trumpet music or brass music or music at all) you should purchase this compact disc.

Without the gorgeous visuals, the soundtrack to Fantasia/2000 is nothing more than a collection of some of classical music's greatest moments. But what moments they are! Conductor James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra provide new (though hardly groundbreaking) arrangements for these classical music warhorses. Piano virtuoso Yefim Bronfman joins in to record the Allegro section of Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 (if you like this track, check out Bronfman playing the entire piece on his 1999 disc with the Los Angeles Philharmonic), and soprano Kathleen Battle lends a high note to the climax of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance. We also get the classic Sorcerer's Apprentice from the original (and now out-of-print) Fantasia soundtrack. Performed by Philharmonia Orchestra, the Paul Dukas composition still steals the show. The original movie may have been a flop, but with any luck Fantasia/2000 will turn some young minds on to classical music, especially with such inspired choices as Respighi's Pines of Rome. Like what you hear? Remember, these are just excerpts and you really owe it to yourself to hear the works in their entirety--slow movements and all. That said, whether you're a Disney fan, an IMAX aficionado, or just a classical-lover-to-be, you can't go wrong with this disc. --Jason Verlinde

Great for kids with Autism!.......2007-04-10

As a parent of profoundly autistic twin boys, this CD is so calming and I never tire of listening to it in the car. This CD on their Walkman helps get them through loud basketball games or sensory overload events at school. They LOVE "Rhapsody in Blue!"

Fantasia 2000.......2006-12-30

I have most of these pieces on other CD's, and I mostly got this one for 'Rhapsody in Blue'. If you don't own 'Firebird' and don't feel like owning the entire thing, then get this--it's got the highlights. Overall the selection is varied. You have probably forgotten that 'Pomp and Circumstance' is a real piece, and not just a graduation death march--this CD will remind you, with its very wise summary of the very extensive five marches by Elgar. This is certainly a lot more interesting than most classical highlights CD's.

This is a really lovely collection of exhilarating and intriguing music pieces. Fantasia helped spawn my interest in classical music. The animation is beautiful in the movie but it's the music which makes it happen.

Fantastic! .......2005-07-18

My favorite piece of music ever is "Rhapsody in Blue" and I've managed to collect quite a few versions of it over the years. This is the absolute best recording of "Rhapsody in Blue" I have ever heard! I'm listening to it on a constant loop tonight. The entire record is great as is the other soundtrack from "Fantasia." The movie is a wonderful way to get kids exposed to classical music without them even realizing it! Worked on me when I was a kid. Once again, the Mouse works his magic!

One song along would make this worth buying.......2004-11-21

In my opinion, this CD is worth it just for "Rhapsody in Blue," but there are seven other great tracks, as well. Music like this spans generations; it's essentially timeless in its beauty and ability to put a smile on your face. Great stuff. Yes, there may only be eight tracks on this disc, but four of them are nine minutes or longer, so you're not being cheated out of anything. I'm not a steadfast Disney fan, but they really know how to pick classical music for their masterpiece.

This disc must be intended for insomniacs; it has that three-in-the-morning feel. The single movements featured are for the most part well performed. And some are decidedly off the beaten track, like Wojciech Kilar's Death and the Maiden (no relation to Schubert's) from the soundtrack to the movie, Paulina's Secret. And we also get English horn player Thomas Stacy doing the solo from the slow movement of Dvorák's New World Symphony with the New York Philharmonic. Also, there is violinist Tasmin Little and the BBC Symphony in a beautiful, dewy performance of The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams. -- Gwendolyn Freed

Haunting, Atmospheric, and Beautiful.......2006-06-15

Every time I find myself awake past midnight, I listen to this CD. It does indeed have that "three-in-the-morning feel". I'm not a classical music buff but every piece on Night Tracks is well-chosen and played beautifully. No matter I stressed out I may feel, this CD never fails to relax me and fill me with peace and tranquility --- I can't recommend it highly enough. The album cover is striking and moody.

Not your ordinary tonal bubble bath ..........2005-10-01

I love this recording for its thought-provoking selections. I wouldn't suggest reading while you listen, you'll get too distracted. Maybe a long soak in the bath and a nice glass of wine. It's great for thinking things over. If I have a criticism, it's the odd themes from Dvorak, Copland, Vaughn Williams and Verdi. Playing just a taste of a theme from something doesn't satisfy. But the Bach, Kilar, Espere and the rest are wonderful.

A 10-CD box of top Bernstein performances.......2005-11-13

This mid-price "Original Jacket" set of classic Bernstien performances--most culled from the Sixties and all iwth the NY Phil.--could be put in a time capsule with a note: "These are the recordings that made Leonard Bernstien famous." I grew up with all of them, including the televized lecture on the Eroica. I have owned these performance since college, and this set includes some first-choice readings, basically all the CDs devoted to Copland, Gershwin, Sibelius, Haydn, Beethoven, and Stravinsky.

Reviewers here never tire of propagating the canard that LB was chiefly famous for his Mahler. Actually, he had a broad repertoire that he excelled in (I don't particularly favor the Mahler Fifth in this set--the only disappointment in a field of excellence).

The only problem with this collection is the price. It would be hard to find a music lover who doesn't already own several of these CDs separately, so instead of paying $100 for a new copy, one should search eBay or the used department here at Amazon.

A Fascinating Overview of Bernstein's Art.......2004-05-16

This collection not only provides a fascinating overview of the art of Leonard Bernstein, it also provides one with a fairly comprehensive view of what Lenny and the controversy surrounding his music making were all about.

All of the recordings here are with Bernstein conducting the New
York Philharmonic, which for my money, is by far the more interesting part of his career. As he got older, Lenny tended to go "molto" more often, take tempoes slower and, generally,
conduct with more self-indulgence than he did at this stage of things, when he was both more daring and more studious. The music contained here gives some idea of the range of Bernstein's
scope, and it is remarkable: from Haydn to Ives, from Beethoven
to Leonard Bernstein.

To start things off, there is one of the best performances of Beethoven's "Eroica" symphony on record, a wonderful document of just how excellent an orchestra the New York Philharmonic could be when they wanted to be. Lenny's reading of Beethoven's milestone score is both meticulous and passionate. You couldn't ask for anything more.

Disk 2 features two suites by the conductor as composer. The
suite from "On the Waterfront" fares better than the "Symphonic
Dances from West Side Story." It's hard to figure out why, but for some reason, the Philharmonic just refuses to swing through the overture ("Jet Song"), while handling all the other rythymic
intricacies in the score with incredible aplomb. The mambo section ("The Dance at the Gym") is particularly intense. Go figure! Just one more example of what a tempermental orchestra
the New York Philharmonic could be.

NOBODY ever conducted Aaron Copland's music better than Leonard
Bernstein. The "Billy the Kid" and "Rodeo" suites contained on Disk 3 provide excellent cases in point.

The Gershwin pieces on Disk 4 give testimony to Bernstein's legendary self-indulgence. Bernstein's rubato is broad and generous, tempoes fluctuate wildly from fast to slow and back again. Lenny seems more intent in showing off his own virtuousity (as both conductor and performer) than in getting to the heart of "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris." The
odd thing is, for all their quirks and eccentricities, these performances "work." Sometimes they are charming and endearing, at others, they are off-putting. It all depends on the mood you are in.

Disk 5 features two Haydn symphonies, # 82, "The Bear" and # 83, "The Hen." Critical opinion of Bernstein's Haydn is sharply divided: for some tastes, Lenny's Haydn is too dramatic, for others, Bernstein was an instinctively great interpreter of Haydn. Listen here and make your own call.

While Bernstein often gets the credit for generating popular interest in Mahler's music in America (a credit which rightfully belongs to Mitropoulos), there is no question that he "discovered" Charles Ives for most Americans. Bernstein's radio broadcast of Ives' Symphony # 2 was its world premiere, and this recording shows Ives in all his glory. Quirky, polytonal, cantankerous, and funny as hell. A really marvelous
performance.

Disk 7 is given to perhaps Bernstein's favorite composer, Gustav Mahler. Unfortunately, the piece chosen is Mahler's 7th, the "orphan child" of Mahler's symphonies. The so-called "Symphony of the Night" remains more interesting for intellectual and musicological reasons (it was a major influence on Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg) than for emotional ones.
Rarely performed, and even more rarely recorded, this remains one
of the best recordings of this piece out there. It may take many, many listenings before you "get it" and start to like it, but if Lenny can't do it for you, it's doubtful anybody can.

Disk 8 contains Bernstein's controversial recording of the Shostakovich 5th Symphony. This is as rousing and heroic a performance of this music as you will ever hear. Whether that's how Shostakovich intended for it to be played is another matter.
Bernstein takes the tempo of the final movement at exactly double
the pace Shostakovich indicated in the score. The subtle, fatalistic satire of the composer is replaced by the conductor's
preference for triumphant heroism. Still, once you've heard this
recording, all other Shostakovich 5th's pale by comparison.

Disk 9 contains what remain my favorite performances of the Sibelius 5th symphony and "Pohjola's Daughter." The latter is particularly remarkable in its conjuring of magic and mysticism.
It's worth the money for the whole set, just on the basis of the
"Eroica," the Copland, the Stravinsky and these Sibelius performances! No joke!

If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!

What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

A superior concerto disc.......2005-05-20

On this disc the digitous demon from the City of Brotherly loves offers us a generous serving of two familiar piano concertos and one unfamiliar one.

In all three works Hamelin may, indeed, encounter scores that provide limited challenge to his technical skills. Yet, to keep up the level of precision and clarity without braking the idiom of these works at any moment equals the highly challenging task of playing a Mozart Concerto really well. Throughout all the three concertos the piano playing and interpretation is at the 10/10 level. The Schedrin concerto, in a way that reminded me of Zimmerman's opera "die Soldaten", contains some abrupt changes from the clustered barely tonal to the light and rhythmic jazz genre, which Hamelin makes without the blink of an eye.

My only critique on this disc is limited to the orchestra part in the first concerto. Especially due to the sound of the strings here, which sound appropriate for a work like Vaugh-Williams' Tallis Variations, I missed the timbral idiom that one is used to from the classical Russian interpretations. Whether it is due to the bigger impact of the winds on the orchestral sound in the second, or to better prep work, here the timbre was far more accurate.

The recording quality is excellent, so what are you waiting for?

Simply beautiful........2004-04-02

This is by far the best interpretation of Shostakovich No.2 I've encountered. His performance on Schedrin's Concerto is simply breathtaking. This recording proves how both technically and artistically complete Hamelin is and deserves more than 5-stars. What we deserve, I believe, is Hamelin's complete cycle of Shostakovich solo piano works.

Hamelin Triumphs Again.......2004-02-16

Somehow this issue got past me when it was released. I usually get everything Marc-André Hamelin records immediately after it comes out; this time a whole month went by! But it's never too late and I was certainly delighted to come by this release from January 2004. The disc contains three of the most insouciant piano concertos ever written. Shostakovich has two personalities: the somber, angst-filled one as in the two violin concerti, and the class cut-up as in these two piano concertos. Here we get Shostakovich the scamp, and in a somewhat similar style, the piano concerto by Rodion Shchedrin (b. 1932). Hamelin is perfect for these concerti because, even though they are not the super-virtuosic type he often records, they require a certain devil-may-care quality which he possesses in abundance (just listen to his recordings of the over-the-top Alkan minor key tudes or the Godowsky recastings of the Chopin Études). Further, because he has accompanied his wife, singer Jody Applebaum, in some down-and-dirty cabaret songs by Bolcom, Britten and Schönberg, he has the experience to play barroom piano as required in the both the Shostakovich concerti. And he seems to be right at home with the bop piano sections of the Shchedrin. You can't tell me that Shchedrin wasn't familiar with Lenny Bernstein's 'Age of Anxiety' Symphony; the piano style is right down that alley. He's given terrific backing by the BBC Scottish Symphony under Andrew Litton. The superb trumpet soloist in the First Concerto is Mark O'Keeffe.

I'd never heard the Shchedrin Concerto before, so I can't compare it with any other performances. But I've long had and loved the recording that Shostakovich made as pianist with André Cluytens conducting. That has been reissued, with somewhat cleaned-up sound, on EMI and is still available. The sound is somewhat brittle compared to this issue and obviously is to be valued because of Shostakovich's presence, but I think I like the Hamelin performances more. I also like Yefim Bronfman's recording of the Shostakovich concerti, available on Sony, and it has the advantage of also including a terrific performance of the Piano Quintet with members of the Juilliard Quartet.

Great performances of great music. Marc-Andre Hamelin is excellent, as always, and the orchestra is first-rate. Sound is excellent. Disk packaging is very attractive. There's no other recording I'd rather hear of the Shchedrin (with its amazing last movement), and I would easily list this recording as my favorite of the Shostakovich concerti, along with those of the composer himself... Dear Marc-Andre Hamelin, please record Prokofieff's Second Piano Concerto!!!
