Amazon.com Essential Recording
Raid a Bach lover's CD collection and you're sure to find at least one copy of the Cello Suites (and probably six or more if it's a real Bach lover). Like his other works for unaccompanied string instruments, the Sonatas and Partitas Bach composed for solo violin were long misunderstood as mere pedagogical exercises. Romantic composers attempted to "rescue" them with transcriptions for piano and the like (the vast, labyrinthine Chaconne from the Partita No. 2 still holds a place in the piano repertoire). But, as with Casals and the Cello Suites, the amazing eloquence of interpreters such as Arthur Grumiaux helped establish the significance of this music for solo violin as among the composer's exalted masterpieces. In her highly acclaimed account using a baroque violin with gut strings (from 1739, by the Genoan maker Pesarinius), English violinist Rachel Podger joins the top rank of Bach interpreters. She employs the latest insights of authentic-performance research but remains at the furthest remove from musicological stuffiness, expressing instead a living, breathing musicality that will stir you to the marrow.
It takes very little for modern ears fattened on gushy vibrato and sentimental excess to adjust to Podger's beautifully restrained delivery--rather like the first minutes spent adjusting to Shakespearean English in a stage production of the bard. After that, the Baroque idiom sounds quite natural indeed. Podger wrings a fresh brand of opulence: in the engaging imagination of her ornamentations and in her rich sense of lines coming together and diverging, she spins a marvelous sonic fabric. Listen to the channels and currents she makes of that celebrated Chaconne in the Partita No. 2 and you won't need to hear it on the keyboard again. This is one of the most significant Bach interpretations available today--and you won't want to miss Podgers's follow-up second volume. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
Great balance of scholarship and art........2001-12-04
Podger's performance manages to be emotionally involved and historically informed at the same time, a neat feat rarely pulled off in baroque music performance these days. (Only Jordi Savall seems to to do it consistently.) These are warm, friendly performances -- nothing forbidding or pedantic going on here at all. As an introduction to this great music, I can't think of how anyone could do better.
Excellent sound and a nice companion project to Peter Wispelwey's winning performances of the J.S. Bach solo cello suites on the same label.
GOLDEN SOUND AND PERFORMANCE.......2001-11-04
I have long been searching for the "perfect" performance of J.S. Bach's SONATAS & PARTITAS for violin solo. They are absolutely gorgeous pieces of music and, for some reason, there is not really a first class, definitive recording of them. Certainly the first that I owned with Jascha Heifetz was not to my liking: the sound was muddy which made the famous violinist appear to have no technique whatsoever. The sound is alot better on the set played by Itzhak Perlman and until I heard this new recording with Rachel Podger, the Perlman was my recording of choice.
Podger's name is brand new to me; I had not heard of her until I read some of her reviews in a few British classical music magazines. They raved about her flawless technique and sweet sound. I bought both volumes of the SONATAS AND PARTITAS and they are, indeed, very special. Firstly, Podger plays on a baroque violin made in Genoa in 1739. The sound is really quite different from what we are used to in a concert hall or in recordings. I'll leave the precise description to other, better qualified listeners/reviewers, but to my ears it is a beautiful, full, rich sound made crystal clear in the recording by Channel Classics.
The music, of course, is spirited and emotional, riviting, calming, joyful and contemplative. It is Bach at his purest. And this is a recording to treasure. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Definitive Version.......2001-05-10
There are many versions of these works on the market, but this has to be the "definitive" version recorded in recent years. Other virtuoso violinists seem to play these works in a slower tempo and in a "romantic era" style. Also, the violins used are usually strung in the modern way with steel strings. Miss Podger plays on a baroque violin with gut strings which gives these works an authentic sound. As well, she plays with energy and depth and seems to attack each note, making these works seem more alive than on other recordings. Miss Podger obviously has a love and affinity for Bach, and it truly shows in her playing. Anyone who seriously appreciates Bach's music should do themselves a favor and listen to her. Both volumes are excellent, but I would especially recommend Vol. 1
inspired.......2001-01-06
I don't know about the traffic noises someone was mentioning -- my equipment is pretty good (a good step up from bose) and I've played this loudly and a million times and never heard it ...
As for the playing itself, I generally like very modern "classical" music or very early music (baroque or pre-baroque). I'm not an expert about classical music by any means (as some of the other reviewers seem to be). But I've never been so obsessed with a classical music disc -- I think I played it and only it for about a week straight. There are a few times when I have seen or heard performances so stunning that I think, I would love to inhabit the body of this person when he/she is performing, and I think I would feel like I had a line straight to god if I could inhabit RP's body when she plays some of the pieces on this disc. Off to buy volume II ...
a recording one doesn't tire of hearing.......2001-01-06
The baroque sound of this violinist is hauntingly beautiful. The variety and pace of this collection of Bach remains a constant of my growing collection which I continue to play and do not tire of hearing and enjoying.

Awesome!.......2007-03-10
I must admit, I was caught by this performance. Album starts with deep pathetic figure in keyboard. After a couple of measures it is coated with a sustained opening note of the violin that just to shape all intriguing woes of this opening Adagio. As soon as the Allegro starts, I realize that this musicians are just a "harmony" match. The third sonata opening Adagio is an indulging phantasm highly esteemed in baroque arias. Here Lucy van Dael flourishes with special long notes, I never experienced before, all well underlined with sustain support of cembalo. Beautiful! Movements that follow slow-fast-slow, just give the plot for one memorable performance.
Both musicians play on baroque instruments using a technique that is applied at time of Bach. This is beyond the dreams for many. Keith Anderson, in intro-booklet, gives the brilliant brief review for each sonata to make easy to follow for everyone. The whole packet is unique and of immense value for serious musician as it is for amateur like me. Bravo!

A "Regular People" Review.......2007-01-09
First of all, I'm a sucker for a good Harpsichord piece, I also play a little Violin, so I'm naturally disposed to this type of music. In General I would say that Baroque Music does not create a lot of exitement in the neophyte classical music fan. That said, give this piece a try by checking out the previews, if you like what you hear, like I do, give this a try (its a great value)....and keep me updated!
Bravo, Naxos (Once Again)!.......2006-03-02
Over the past several years, the Naxos label has been continually outdoing itself with excellent releases of standard (and not so standard) repertoire at bargain price. This authentic-instrument recording of Bach's dense violin-and-harpsichord sonatas is recorded in warm and vivid sound, with equal balance between the two partners. Violinist and harpsichordist display affinity and ornament their melodic lines sensitively. This recording received strong recommendation in the Penguin Record Guide.
Bienvenue mr. Bach..........2005-07-22
Ce disque abordable est si réussi, que l'on
se demande bien ce qu'une version plus dispendieuse
pourrait apporter de plus. Essayez et vous verrez.
An excellent recording.......2003-01-02
Most of J.S. Bach's duo sonatas are not very well-known, but they often rank among his most fascinating works, as this strong Naxos release testifies. That this music is rarely virtuosistic does not mean that it's easy to pull off well: I have heard interpretations of these works which were somewhat problematic, the two performers not blending their playing in such a way that best benifited the music. This recording is another matter, though: Lucy van Dael and Bob van Asperen are both excellent. Van Dael is especially adept with the long, sustained notes in the slower movements, giving these powerful sections pure mystical beauty; during the faster movements, both players have a perfect chemistry and complete each other well. Sound-wise, nothing can be said against this recording - I've rarely heard an harpsichord sound as good as van Asperen's does on this disc, the instrument sounding both precise and full. This disc - and the second volume of the keyboard/violin sonatas - should be added to every classical music collection.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Fournier.......2004-02-16
On this 4CD EMI Import, the great cellist Pierre Fournier performs a variety of orchestral and chamber recordings, recorded primarily in mono from the 1940s and early 50s. There are three orchestral works -- Haydn's 2nd Concerto (Kubelik/Philharmonia, 1951), Schumann's Concerto (Sargent/Philharmonia, 1956 in stereo), and Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations (Bigot/Lamoureux, 1941). Disc two, and half of disc three, contain Beethoven Cello Sonatas with the great Artur Schnabel, while the fourth disc features a variety of pieces, from Bach and Boccherini to Debussy and Ravel, with pianist Gerald Moore. I'm withholding a fifth star because the collection contains mostly historical recordings, though it certainly captures one of history's greatest cellists in his prime. With that being said, "Les Introuvables de Pierre Fournier" is a must buy for cello entusiasts.

Brilliant!.......2004-06-23
Don't let the budget status (or lack of picture) deter you from this one! Edinger plays these works as though her life depends on them. The Fuga from the Sonata in G minor is incredible, while the B minor Allemanda with its majestic chords and complicated rhythms sounds almost like a lullaby. While the CDs by Milstein, Perlman (or, well, Perlman and Engineers) and others are widely lauded, Edinger could be the best kept secret in the recordings of these pieces. Her style, unlike Rachel Podger, is hard, biting, and occassionally even violent. Her B minor Bouree is incredible, and such is her playing that on some occassions her chords actually sound like whole chords, as opposed to the rolls that are in reality necessary to play chords on the violin. At $3, this is one incredible bargain!

Voluptuous Seductive Juicy Music !.......2005-07-19
It is so vivid music that my physical reactions has excessed normal catagories known to me induced by any music! as if had been drugged with aphrodisiac.I wish my favourite musician J S Bach could hear these CDs! first the acoustic quality is excellent and the violinist Usula Bundis plays with formidable charm that actually serves me as ultimately perfect model of baroque aestheticism: colourfulness, expressiveness, precision and strickness and virtuosity ,volubility. and the both harpsichord continuo and solo playings are also sensitive, standard but vivid in a moderate sound . there are more presentations of works by Bach and other composers from this ensemble which are good choices and insight into the vague but fabulous & sensible M.A.R.

Customer Reviews:
Bach as music.......2006-02-17
This is the most sheerly musical recording of these pieces I've ever heard. By contrast, the great violinists who have recorded them can sound (by turns) mechanical, pedestrian or perfunctory. Van Dael's playing has an improvisatory quality alien to the usual suspects in this music. Her phrasing, even compared to a Milstein, is vastly superior. Only occasional intrusive breatihng noises prevent this recording from being perfection.
